The clearest way to identify both is Settings > System > About. Scroll to Windows specifications and record Edition, Version, and, when support requests it, OS build. For a faster version-and-build check, search the taskbar for winver; use About when you also need the edition.
The two built-in checks at a glance
Windows 11 already includes everything needed to identify its release and edition. You do not need a separate diagnostic utility or paid upgrade. Choose the screen that exposes the fields your question requires.

Use this procedure when someone asks, “Which version of Windows do I have?” and also needs to know whether the installation is Home, Pro, or another edition shown by Windows.

- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Settings.
- In Settings, select System.
- Choose About. You may need to scroll within the page to reach the system-information sections.
- Find the heading Windows specifications.
- Read the value beside Edition. This is the installed edition label, such as Home or Pro.
- Read the value beside Version. This identifies the Windows release recorded on that device.
- If a support technician, driver installer, or compatibility form asks for a build, record OS build from the same Windows specifications area.
Copy the values exactly, including punctuation and any letters in the build number. A version and an edition answer different questions: the edition describes the product level installed, while the version identifies the Windows release. Do not substitute one for the other when filling in a support ticket.
What a useful note looks like
A complete report can be written in one line: Edition: [the exact value shown]; Version: [the exact value shown]; OS build: [the exact value shown]. Replace the bracketed descriptions with the values on your screen. If the recipient only asks for “Windows 11 Home or Pro,” send the Edition value; if an application lists a minimum release, send Version as well.
Understand the fields on the About page
The About page places several kinds of information close together. Reading the label beside each value prevents common mix-ups.

Microsoft’s Insider guidance also describes build, edition, and version as separate values in About: Join the Windows Insider Program and manage Insider settings. That separation matters when a form has separate boxes for Edition, Version, and Build.
Use winver for a quick version and build check
If you only need the release and build, the built-in winver tool is quicker than navigating through Settings.
- Select the taskbar search box.
- Type
winver. - Open the matching result.
- Read the version and build information in the dialog.
This is useful when a support article says “check your build” or when you are comparing a device with a minimum Windows release. Keep the About page as your source for the explicit edition value: the cited winver instructions document version and build, not a guaranteed Home-or-Pro field.
When the two screens appear different
About and winver are exposing related identifiers in different interfaces. Compare the labels rather than expecting the text to be arranged identically. Version is the release value; OS build is the more detailed build value. If a form asks for “edition,” return to Settings > System > About > Windows specifications instead of inferring an edition from the build.
Choose the right value for the task
People often say “Windows version” when they actually need one of several values. Match the request to the field before sending an answer.

Providing the wrong field can delay support. For example, sending an OS build when a software vendor asks for the edition does not establish whether the installed license is Home or Pro.
Edition is not the same as activation
Finding the Edition tells you what Windows reports as installed; it does not prove that the copy is activated. To check activation separately, open Settings > System > Activation. Microsoft explains the activation check and the relationship between the installed edition and its license in Activate Windows.
Microsoft’s guidance uses Home and Pro as examples and notes that the installed edition needs to match the license for Windows to activate. Therefore, if you are investigating an activation warning, record the Edition from About and then inspect Activation. Do not treat a successful edition lookup as an activation result, and do not treat an activation message as a substitute for the Version value requested by an application.
Check architecture separately under Device specifications
Some installers ask whether Windows is 64-bit. That is an architecture question, not an edition or version question. On the same About page, look under Device specifications for System type.
Microsoft’s 32-bit and 64-bit guidance states that Windows 11 is 64-bit only and identifies System type on the About page as the place to check operating-system type: 32-bit and 64-bit Windows: Frequently asked questions. Keep this value in its own note. A report such as “Windows 11 Pro, version [value], 64-bit” combines three different fields without confusing them.
A quick decision guide
Start with the wording of the request rather than opening a random diagnostic screen. The following choices keep the answer focused:
- Only “Home or Pro?” Open About and copy Edition.
- “Which Windows release?” Copy Version from Windows specifications. You can use
winverif edition is not part of the question. - “Which build?” Copy OS build from About or the build shown by
winver. - “Will this software run on 64-bit Windows?” Read System type under Device specifications. Do not answer with the edition or version.
- “Why is Windows not activated?” Record Edition first, then inspect Settings > System > Activation. The two checks answer different questions.
If a support form has separate boxes, fill each box from the correspondingly named field. If it has one free-text box, include the labels in your sentence so the recipient can tell Version from OS build.

The safest report preserves the labels exactly as Windows displays them. For example:

Use the shortest example that answers the request. There is no benefit in sending architecture information to a licensing team if it was not requested, and there is a risk of burying the relevant Edition value in unrelated details. Conversely, a troubleshooting technician may need both Version and OS build, so omit neither when those fields are requested.
When reading values to someone over the phone, say the field name first and pause between fields. “Edition” is not interchangeable with “version,” and a build can contain punctuation or letters that are easy to omit when spoken quickly. A screenshot can help, but make sure the labels and values are both visible.
Troubleshoot common lookup problems
The About page is open, but the values are hard to find
- Confirm that you selected System, then About, rather than another Settings category.
- Scroll until you see Windows specifications; Edition and Version are grouped there.
- Look lower or elsewhere on the page for Device specifications if you need System type. It is not the same section as Windows specifications.
Search does not show the expected winver result
- Search for the exact text
winver, without an extra space. - Open the result that launches the Windows version dialog.
- If you still need the edition, stop troubleshooting the shortcut and use the Settings path; About is the documented route for the edition-and-version pair.
A support form asks for a build but you entered the version
Return to About and copy OS build, or open winver and copy the build shown there. Version and build are related but not interchangeable fields. Include both only when the form has separate boxes or the technician requests both.

The edition and the license information do not seem to match
First record the Edition exactly as Windows displays it. Then open Settings > System > Activation and review the activation information. An edition mismatch is a licensing issue to resolve through activation guidance; changing the wording of the edition in your report will not resolve it.
You are checking a device for someone else
Ask the person at the device to read the values aloud or send a screenshot that includes the labels. The labels are important: “Version” and “OS build” can be mistaken when values are copied without context. Avoid asking for unrelated personal information visible elsewhere in Settings.
How to report the result accurately
A concise, useful report contains the field names and their values, not just a phrase such as “I have Windows 11.” Use the following checklist before sending it:
- Edition: copied from Windows specifications.
- Version: copied from Windows specifications.
- OS build: included when troubleshooting, updating, or checking a detailed requirement.
- System type: included only when architecture matters.
- Activation: reported separately from edition when licensing is part of the question.
For example, a support message can state: “Under Settings > System > About, Windows specifications shows Edition: [value], Version: [value], OS build: [value]. Device specifications shows System type: [value]. Activation is reported separately under Settings > System > Activation.” Replace each bracketed description with the exact on-screen text; do not guess or abbreviate a value that the recipient may need to match.

Windows can display a different Version or OS build after an update, and an edition change affects the Edition field. When a troubleshooting instruction is tied to a particular build, check the device immediately before applying the instruction rather than relying on an old note. If the question concerns activation after an edition change, capture the new Edition and inspect Activation separately.

For repeat support work, save the date alongside the values in your own ticket or inventory record. The date is your recordkeeping detail; it is not a replacement for the Version or OS build that Windows currently reports.
