The reliable way to identify a laptop’s processor is to copy its complete model number from the listing, look up that exact number on Intel’s or AMD’s official specification page, and then verify that the laptop listing names the same CPU, graphics configuration and memory options. Family labels such as “Core Ultra” or “Ryzen AI” are not specific enough on their own.
Start with the exact processor model
A laptop listing may advertise a broad family, such as a Ryzen 7 or Core Ultra processor, while omitting the model number that determines the actual core count, graphics engine, power range and other features. Two laptops carrying the same family branding can therefore have materially different specifications.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Find the full processor designation in the configuration or technical-specification section. It may contain a brand, family, series, model number and suffix. Copy it exactly, including letters and numbers. If the listing only says “Intel Core Ultra 7” or “AMD Ryzen 7” without the complete model, treat the specification as incomplete. Look for the laptop maker’s configuration page or ask the seller for the exact processor before comparing prices or performance.
For an Intel chip, enter the complete processor number in Intel’s Product Specification site. Intel’s own guide explains how to use the site’s CPU, memory, GPU and advanced-technology sections. For an AMD chip, use the model in AMD’s Processor Specifications catalog or its laptop processor pages.

Where the model number may be hidden
Retailers may put the processor in a drop-down configuration selector, a “technical details” tab, a downloadable specification sheet or the manufacturer’s product code. A product title can describe only the family, while a different section identifies the exact chip. Check the selected configuration, not just the default title or a photograph of the box. If several screen, memory or storage options are sold under one listing, confirm that the processor belongs to the exact version in your cart.
Save a copy of the listing or note the date you checked it. Retailer pages can change when a configuration sells out, and a replacement configuration may use a different processor or graphics option while keeping a similar marketing name.
How do I check which processor a laptop has?
On an existing Windows laptop
- Open Start and search for System Information.
- Open the System Information app.
- Read the Processor field. Intel’s support procedure says this field shows the processor name, number and speed.
- Copy the complete text, then search that model on the processor manufacturer’s official specification page.
The Windows result identifies the installed processor, not necessarily every detail of the laptop. It does not by itself tell you whether the system also has a discrete graphics card, how much memory is soldered, or which power setting the manufacturer selected.
If the text is abbreviated, search the exact string together with the laptop maker and model, then confirm the result against the processor manufacturer’s page. Do not substitute a similar-looking desktop chip or a processor from another generation.
On an existing Linux laptop
Open a terminal and run:
lscpu | grep "Model name"
The command prints the model-name line reported by Linux. Use that exact model to check the manufacturer’s specifications, then inspect the laptop’s own documentation for graphics, memory and power details. Firmware or virtualization settings can affect what operating-system tools display, so the model line is a starting point for confirmation rather than a replacement for the manufacturer’s documentation.
Before you buy
- Copy the full processor model from the retailer’s configuration or specifications page.
- Search for that model on the chip maker’s official site, rather than relying on a retailer’s short family label.
- Record the CPU cores and threads, clock information, integrated graphics model, supported memory, power rating or configurable range, and NPU information when relevant.
- Return to the laptop listing and confirm that it names the same processor and states the graphics configuration you need.
- Check the manufacturer’s page for the exact laptop configuration. A processor specification describes the chip model; it does not guarantee how every laptop maker implements cooling, memory, power limits or graphics.
Intel’s identification and specification instructions are summarized in its support documentation: How to Identify My Intel® Processor (last reviewed February 5, 2025) and How to Find the Features of Intel® Processors Using Product Specification Site (last reviewed January 8, 2025).
Which processor specifications matter?
Do not choose from one headline number. Capture the fields below for every candidate and compare like with like. Mark whether each value comes from the processor page or the finished-laptop page; those are related but not interchangeable.

| CPU cores | How many processing cores are present | More cores can help with parallel workloads, but architecture, cooling and power limits also affect results. |
| Threads | The processor’s reported hardware or logical execution threads | Compare the complete model; do not infer thread count from a family name. |
| Clock information | Base and boost or maximum clock specifications where listed | Treat a maximum clock as a model specification, not a guaranteed sustained speed in every laptop. |
| Integrated graphics | The graphics engine built into the processor | Check its exact name, then verify whether the laptop also includes a discrete GPU. |
| Supported memory | Memory type, capacity limits and supported speed information | Confirm what the finished laptop actually ships with and whether memory is upgradeable. |
| Power rating | Published thermal design or configurable power information, when available | Compare the laptop maker’s configured power and cooling, not just the processor’s headline range. |

Intel organizes its Product Specification entries into CPU, memory, GPU and advanced-technology categories. Open each category instead of stopping at the first summary line. AMD’s processor catalogs similarly provide model-specific fields for its laptop chips.
Match the fields to your workload
For office work, browsing and ordinary application use, verify the complete CPU model, installed memory and integrated graphics rather than assuming a family badge answers everything. For compiling, rendering or other parallel tasks, compare cores and threads together with the laptop’s cooling and power information. For 3D work or GPU-accelerated applications, the discrete GPU model and its own memory are as important as the processor graphics field. For local AI features, check NPU presence and software support, but do not treat a TOPS figure as a benchmark result.
How many cores does this laptop processor have?
Use the exact model page, not the family name. In Intel’s specification entry, open the CPU section and record the stated core and thread counts. In AMD’s specification entry, record the corresponding core and thread fields for that model.
Write the result with the model attached, for example: “Model X — eight cores and 16 threads, according to the manufacturer’s specification page.” Do not turn a model’s count into a claim about every processor in the series. Also note that core count alone is not a performance ranking: processor design, clock behavior, cooling, memory configuration and the laptop’s power settings all influence real workloads.

Some listings use different descriptions for performance and efficiency cores or summarize only a total. Use the manufacturer’s stated total and thread fields, and preserve any explanatory labels shown on the official page instead of attempting to recalculate them.
Does the laptop have integrated graphics or a separate GPU?
Read the processor’s graphics field
Intel’s processor pages list the built-in graphics name under GPU Specifications. The processor may therefore include graphics even when a retailer does not prominently advertise a GPU.
Check the complete laptop configuration
A laptop can have both processor graphics and a discrete graphics processor. The integrated engine may handle display output and light workloads while the separate GPU handles demanding 3D, video or compute tasks. A listing that says “Intel graphics” or names Radeon processor graphics does not prove that no discrete GPU is installed.
On a Windows laptop, open Device Manager → Display adapters. Intel’s graphics support instructions explain that this list can show Intel graphics and any installed discrete graphics: How to Find the Intel® Graphics (GPU Name) Supported for Intel® Processor (last reviewed January 14, 2025).

Before purchase, look for separate entries in the laptop maker’s specification sheet: one for processor graphics and another for a discrete GPU. Confirm the exact GPU model, memory and power information when those details matter. The chip manufacturer’s page describes the processor; the laptop listing determines whether a second GPU, its cooling system and its memory are actually included.
Be alert to wording such as “graphics capable,” “up to” or “shared graphics.” Those phrases do not identify a discrete GPU. If the listing does not state a separate model, record it as “none stated” and ask the seller rather than assuming that processor graphics are equivalent to a dedicated card.
Does this laptop have an NPU?
An NPU (neural processing unit) is a specialized engine for certain AI workloads. It is a model-specific feature, not a guarantee that every AI application will use it or that the whole laptop will reach a particular speed.
Checking an Intel processor
Intel says to inspect the NPU Specifications section of the processor’s official entry. On laptops with Intel Core Ultra Processors Series 1 and Series 2, Intel also documents NPU status in Windows Task Manager. That Task Manager guidance is specifically for those series; do not extend it to every Intel laptop.

If the listing says “AI PC” but does not identify the exact processor, ask for the model number and verify the NPU field yourself.
Checking an AMD processor
AMD’s laptop catalog lists NPU TOPS for models that include an NPU. AMD describes Ryzen AI as combining a dedicated AI engine, Radeon graphics engine and Ryzen processor cores: AMD Ryzen AI – Windows PCs with AI Built In. Its laptop listings are available at Ryzen Processors for Laptops and, for business models, Ryzen Processors for Business Laptops.
AMD cautions that TOPS can vary with system configuration, the AI model and the software version. Treat a published TOPS figure as a specification for that processor model under AMD’s stated conditions, not as a universal application-speed prediction. Confirm that the operating system and the particular application support the NPU path you care about.

An NPU can coexist with CPU and GPU acceleration. Therefore, an “AI” label does not tell you which engine an application will use, whether an internet connection is required, or whether a feature is enabled in the operating-system version supplied with the laptop. Verify those software requirements separately for the applications you intend to run.
How to compare two laptop processor configurations
Create a side-by-side record before deciding. The following template keeps processor facts separate from finished-laptop facts.
| Field | Laptop A | Laptop B |
|---|---|---|
| Exact processor model | Enter the complete listing text | Enter the complete listing text |
| CPU cores / threads | Manufacturer value for that model | Manufacturer value for that model |
| Clock specifications | Base and maximum values, with qualifications | Base and maximum values, with qualifications |
| Processor graphics | Exact integrated-graphics name | Exact integrated-graphics name |
| Discrete GPU | Exact model, or “none stated” | Exact model, or “none stated” |
| Installed memory | Capacity, type and speed from the laptop listing | Capacity, type and speed from the laptop listing |

| NPU | Presence and published capability, if relevant | Presence and published capability, if relevant |
| Exact laptop configuration | Display, cooling, battery and other model-specific details | Display, cooling, battery and other model-specific details |
If a field is not published, write “not stated” and keep looking at the laptop maker’s documentation. Do not fill gaps with assumptions based on the processor family.
Compare equivalent configurations wherever possible. A laptop with more memory, a different cooling design or a discrete GPU is not a clean processor-only comparison. If one candidate has several selectable power modes, record which mode the manufacturer specifies and which mode independent tests used.
Why processor specifications do not equal laptop performance
Official chip pages are reliable lookup evidence for the features they publish, but they are not independent tests of a finished laptop. The same processor can be placed in systems with different cooling, firmware, power limits, memory layouts, displays and battery settings. Those choices can change sustained performance, fan noise and battery behavior.
Use manufacturer specifications to establish what the chip supports. For real-world performance, seek independent testing of the exact laptop model and configuration you plan to buy. A processor’s maximum clock, power range or NPU TOPS should never be presented as a guaranteed result for every laptop using that family.
When reading a benchmark, check whether the tested unit has the same processor suffix, memory arrangement, graphics option and power profile as the listing you are considering. A result from a larger chassis or a different memory configuration may not transfer to a thin model with the same chip name.
Common listing traps and how to resolve them
A family name without a model number
Problem: “Ryzen 7,” “Core Ultra 5” or “AI processor” does not uniquely identify a chip.
Fix: Request the complete processor designation. If the seller cannot provide it, do not make a detailed core, graphics or NPU comparison from that listing.

Integrated graphics mistaken for the only GPU
Problem: The listing names processor graphics but leaves a separate GPU unclear.
Fix: Check the laptop’s Display adapters information when you have the machine, or find a configuration sheet that lists both processor graphics and discrete graphics before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA processor page treated as a complete laptop specification
Problem: The chip page states supported memory or power information, but the laptop may ship with a different amount of memory or use a manufacturer-selected power limit.
Fix: Compare the processor page with the exact laptop configuration, including installed memory, upgradeability, cooling and power details.
Peak numbers treated as sustained results
Problem: A maximum clock or configurable power value is presented as the speed the laptop will maintain continuously.
Fix: Treat it as a model-level specification and consult testing of the exact finished system for sustained workloads.
AI branding treated as proof of application support
Problem: An NPU or a TOPS number is assumed to accelerate every AI feature.
Fix: Verify application and operating-system support. Keep AMD’s qualification that TOPS varies by system configuration, AI model and software version, and keep Intel’s Task Manager guidance limited to Core Ultra Series 1 and Series 2 where Intel specifies it.

Where do I find the exact Intel or AMD processor model?
For a laptop you already own, use Windows System Information or the Linux lscpu | grep "Model name" command, then confirm the result on Intel’s or AMD’s official page. For a purchase, look in the retailer’s selected configuration and the laptop maker’s technical specification sheet. A family label alone is insufficient.
Can I identify the graphics card from the CPU name?
You can identify the processor’s integrated graphics from the official CPU page, but the CPU name does not prove whether the laptop also includes a discrete GPU. Check the complete laptop configuration or, on Windows, Device Manager’s Display adapters list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is a higher NPU TOPS number automatically better?
No. AMD states that TOPS can vary with system configuration, AI model and software version. Compare the exact processor, then verify that your operating system and application use the NPU. A TOPS figure is not a universal application-speed score.

Does the processor’s supported memory equal the laptop’s installed memory?
No. Supported memory is a capability of the chip. The laptop maker may install less, use a different speed, solder the memory or provide no upgrade path. Record both the processor limit and the actual configuration.
Why can two laptops with the same processor perform differently?
Cooling, firmware, power limits, memory layout, graphics hardware, display settings and battery modes can differ. Use chip pages for feature verification and independent tests of the exact laptop for real-world performance.
What should I do if the seller will not provide the model number?
Ask for the complete processor designation and the exact configuration code. If the seller cannot provide them, treat cores, graphics, memory and NPU claims as unverified and choose a listing with clearer documentation.
A final pre-purchase verification checklist
- Have you copied the complete processor model, including its suffix?
- Does the official Intel or AMD page match the model printed in the laptop listing?
- Did you record cores, threads and clock specifications from that exact model page?
- Did you identify the processor’s integrated graphics by its full name?
- Does the laptop listing clearly state whether a discrete GPU is also installed?
- Did you compare installed memory with the processor’s supported memory and the laptop’s upgrade limits?
- Did you attach the relevant power rating or configurable range to the exact model and configuration?
- If AI features matter, did you verify NPU presence and the software’s ability to use it?
- Are you distinguishing manufacturer specifications from independent testing of the finished laptop?
- If any key field says “not stated,” have you asked the seller or checked the laptop maker’s configuration page?
This process gives you an auditable specification comparison without pretending that one family label or one peak number describes an entire laptop.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check which processor a laptop has?
On Windows, open Start, search for System Information and read the Processor field. On Linux, run lscpu | grep "Model name". Before buying, copy the complete model from the listing and verify it on Intel’s or AMD’s official specification page.
How many cores does this laptop processor have?
Search the exact processor model in the manufacturer’s CPU specifications and record its stated cores and threads. Do not infer either figure from a family name.
