How to Check Which HDMI Version Your TV, Monitor, or Laptop Supports

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

The reliable way to check an HDMI version is to identify the exact TV, monitor, or laptop model and read the manufacturer’s port specification or manual. The shape of an HDMI connector cannot reveal its version, and an unqualified “HDMI 2.0” or “HDMI 2.1” label does not prove which features a port supports.

Check the source device, the display input, and the cable as one chain. The connection can deliver only what the least-capable port or cable allows. For a target such as 4K at 120 Hz, verify the listed resolution, refresh rate, color depth, HDR, VRR, and bandwidth—not just a version number—and confirm the negotiated mode in your operating system or display menu.

Why an HDMI version number is not enough

HDMI version numbers describe a specification generation, but they do not automatically define every feature in a product. HDMI Licensing Administrator says a version number must be associated with a specific feature or function; “HDMI 2.1” by itself is not proof of 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), a particular bandwidth, or any other individual capability.

Manufacturers can implement different subsets of a specification. A television may have one high-capability HDMI input and several inputs with lower limits. A monitor may offer different HDMI modes, while a laptop may have an HDMI output that is limited to a particular resolution and refresh rate. Always read the specification for the exact port on the exact model.

HDMI Licensing Administrator describes HDMI 2.2 as the latest specification in the official material used for this guide. It enables up to 96 Gbps and includes modes such as 4K at 240 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz with full chroma at 10-bit and 12-bit color. Those are specification capabilities, not a promise that every HDMI 2.2 product or cable supports all of them.

Step 1: Find the complete model number

Write down the full model identifier, including letters, numbers, screen size, region code, and revision suffix. A nearly identical model name can have different ports or limits in another region or production revision.

  • TV: Check the label on the rear panel, the original carton, or the television’s information/about screen. The model may also appear under a support or device-information menu.
  • Monitor: Look on the rear or underside, on the stand label, or in the on-screen display’s information page.
  • Laptop: Read the underside label, the system-information page, or the model entry in the operating system’s device information. Record the manufacturer’s complete product code, not only the marketing family name.

Do not identify a device only by its connector. Full-size HDMI, Mini HDMI, and Micro HDMI describe physical formats, not the bandwidth or features implemented by the port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Open the manufacturer’s specification or manual

  1. Search the manufacturer’s support site for the exact model number followed by specifications, manual, or ports.
  2. Choose the support page matching the complete suffix and your region when regional pages are available.
  3. Open the technical-specification table and the downloadable manual. The manual may show a port diagram or a separate timing table that the summary page omits.
  4. Locate the HDMI section and note each input or output separately. A statement such as “HDMI 1 supports 4K120” does not automatically apply to HDMI 2, HDMI 3, or an HDMI output on a laptop dock.

Intel’s official guidance is direct: “To find the version of an HDMI port or cable, consult the device specifications from the Original Equipment Manufacturer.” That is more reliable than a retailer listing, a cable package that uses an informal version label, or the connector’s appearance.

  • What You Get: HDMI Cable (6 ft, 8K), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Step 3: Read the port-by-port limits

Use the version label when the manufacturer supplies one, but prioritize the actual limits. Record the following for every HDMI port:

  • Maximum resolution and refresh rate, such as 3840×2160 at 60 Hz or 120 Hz.
  • Color depth, including 8-bit, 10-bit, or 12-bit operation.
  • Chroma format or whether full-chroma output is supported at the target mode.
  • HDR support and any stated HDR format limitations.
  • VRR and ALLM support, including which inputs provide them.
  • eARC or ARC support for audio return to a receiver or soundbar.
  • Maximum bandwidth, if the manufacturer lists it.
  • Whether the port is an HDMI input or output, and whether a special mode must be enabled in a menu.

A specification that lists “HDMI 2.1” without a resolution, refresh-rate, or feature table leaves important questions unanswered. Treat the unqualified label as a prompt to find the detailed port table, not as proof of a particular gaming or video mode.

What to look for on a TV

TV specifications often group several HDMI inputs together even though only one supports the highest rate. Check the diagram or table for port numbers and look for separate entries for 4K120, 8K, VRR, ALLM, HDR, and eARC. If eARC is listed on HDMI 2, for example, connect the audio device to that numbered input; another input may not provide the same return-audio function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to look for on a monitor

Monitor manuals commonly include a timing table. Find the HDMI row for the desired resolution and refresh rate, then check whether that mode is available through HDMI or only through another input. A monitor can advertise a high refresh rate while limiting that rate on HDMI, so the input-specific table matters.

What to look for on a laptop

A laptop specification may state the HDMI output’s maximum resolution and refresh rate rather than an HDMI version. It may also distinguish the built-in port from USB-C video output or a dock. Use the HDMI output limit stated for your exact model; a high-capability monitor cannot make a laptop output a mode the laptop does not generate.

Compare the source, display, and cable as one chain

Every link must support the same target signal. Intel states that a configuration is limited by its lowest-version port or cable. If any component is limited to 4K at 30 Hz, replacing only the display will not produce 4K at 60 Hz.

Chain component What to verify Typical failure when it is the limit
Source: laptop, console, or media player HDMI output resolution, refresh rate, color depth, HDR, and VRR/ALLM capabilities The source never offers the desired mode, even when the display supports it.
Display input: TV or monitor Port number, maximum timing, HDR/color limits, VRR/ALLM, and eARC where relevant The picture works but a high refresh rate, HDR, VRR, or eARC option is unavailable.
Cable Official certification category, bandwidth rating, and condition The link falls back to a lower resolution or refresh rate, flickers, drops out, or loses features.

Adapters, receivers, soundbars, capture devices, and docks add more links. Check their HDMI input and output specifications as well; the same lowest-capability rule applies to every device between the source and display.

Choose the cable by its certified category

Informal labels such as “HDMI 2.0 cable” are less useful than the official cable names from HDMI Licensing Administrator. Look for the certification label on the package and, where applicable, the label printed on the cable.

Official cable category Rated bandwidth Typical capability described in the specification When to consider it
High Speed HDMI Cable 10.2 Gbps 4K30-class use Basic older 4K systems or lower-bandwidth modes, when the device specifications require no more.
Premium High Speed HDMI Cable 18 Gbps 4K60 and HDR-class use 4K at 60 Hz systems that require the tested 18-Gbps category.
Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable Up to 48 Gbps High-bandwidth modes such as 4K120 and 8K60 The relevant certified category for a compatible source/display chain targeting up to 48 Gbps.
Ultra96 HDMI Cable Up to 96 Gbps Applications above 48 Gbps associated with HDMI 2.2 Use only when the source and display require an HDMI 2.2 bandwidth above 48 Gbps and the cable carries the official category label.

A cable category does not upgrade a port. An Ultra High Speed cable connected to a 4K30-limited laptop still produces no more than the laptop can output. Conversely, a high-capability source and display can be held back by an older or uncertified cable.

For a 4K120 or 8K60 setup, select an official Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable and verify that both devices list the target mode. For an HDMI 2.2 application above 48 Gbps, check for the newer Ultra96 designation and confirm that the devices themselves require that bandwidth.

Step 4: Verify the mode after connecting everything

A picture only proves that some signal is passing. It does not prove that the connection is operating at the desired resolution, refresh rate, color depth, HDR mode, or VRR state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the source directly to the documented high-capability HDMI input when possible. Remove an intermediate receiver, switch, dock, or adapter while testing.
  2. Open the source operating system’s display settings and read the active resolution and refresh rate. On Windows, use Settings > System > Display > Advanced display; the labels can vary by Windows release. On macOS, open System Settings > Displays. Linux desktop environments provide an equivalent display-settings panel.
  3. Open the TV or monitor’s information/status menu and compare its reported input signal with the source setting.
  4. Enable HDR, VRR, or ALLM only after confirming that the port and source list support the feature. Some displays require an HDMI enhanced, deep-color, or high-bandwidth mode in the input settings.
  5. Change one setting at a time and recheck the reported signal. If the picture disappears, wait for the operating system’s automatic recovery or reconnect using the previous working mode.

The negotiated result is the final evidence of what the complete connection is delivering. Keep a note of the working resolution, refresh rate, and feature state so you can identify which change caused a failure.

Troubleshoot common HDMI-version and bandwidth problems

The device shows a picture, but only at 30 Hz

  • Check the source output limit in its exact model specification.
  • Confirm that the display input—not merely another HDMI input—lists 4K60 or the desired higher rate.
  • Replace a High Speed cable with a certified Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed cable as required by the target mode.
  • Remove switches, receivers, docks, and adapters temporarily to locate an additional limiting link.

4K120 is missing from the display settings

  • Verify that the source actually lists 4K120 over HDMI; a monitor’s maximum refresh rate may apply only to another input.
  • Use the display’s documented high-bandwidth HDMI port and enable any required enhanced or deep-color mode.
  • Use an official Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable rated for up to 48 Gbps.
  • Check the display’s color-depth and HDR requirements. A mode may disappear when a combination of refresh rate, HDR, and color depth exceeds the port’s limit.

HDR or VRR works on one input but not another

Port features are not necessarily identical. Re-read the numbered input table and move the source to the input that explicitly lists the required feature. Confirm the source setting and the display’s feature toggle after moving the cable.

The connection flickers or cuts out

  • Reseat both connectors and inspect the cable for damage or excessive strain.
  • Test a shorter, certified cable of the required category.
  • Lower the mode temporarily to establish whether bandwidth is the trigger, then restore features one at a time.
  • Test the source directly on the display to separate a device or cable problem from an intermediate component.

eARC does not return audio

Check that the audio device is connected to the display’s specifically labeled eARC or ARC port and that the source, TV, and audio device all support the required function. eARC is a port feature, not a guarantee attached to every HDMI connector on the television.

A practical decision guide

  1. Need ordinary HD or older 4K at 30 Hz? Start with the manufacturer’s timing table and a certified High Speed cable if that is the documented requirement.
  2. Need 4K at 60 Hz with HDR? Confirm the source and display list that exact combination and use a certified Premium High Speed cable or a higher category.
  3. Need 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, or similar gaming features? Confirm the numbered HDMI port and source output, then use an official Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.
  4. Need 8K at 60 Hz? Verify the exact 8K timing, chroma, and color-depth limits on both devices; do not infer them from a version number alone.
  5. Need an HDMI 2.2 mode above 48 Gbps? Confirm that both devices specify the required HDMI 2.2 capability and select a certified Ultra96 cable.

These categories describe what the cable is designed and tested to carry. The actual result remains the mode negotiated by the source, display input, and every intermediate device.

What to record before buying a cable or display

  • Exact source and display model numbers, including suffixes.
  • The HDMI port numbers that support the desired resolution and refresh rate.
  • Required HDR, color depth, VRR, ALLM, and eARC features.
  • The source’s output limit and the display’s input limit.
  • The cable’s official certification category and its physical condition.
  • The final negotiated resolution and refresh rate shown by the operating system or display information menu.

HDMI Licensing Administrator reports almost 14 billion HDMI devices shipped since December 2002. That large installed base includes products with widely different implementations, which is why the exact model specification remains more useful than the connector shape or a bare version label.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
