The dependable way to identify an HDMI cable is to read the official cable name printed on its jacket, then compare it with the name, logo, and certification label on the original package. For certified Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 cables, scan the package label’s QR code and confirm that the result matches the cable’s brand, model, cable type, and length. Do not treat a claim such as “HDMI 2.1 cable” as proof of performance: HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. says version numbers alone cannot define a product’s or component’s capabilities.
Once you know the cable category, check the entire signal chain—source, cable, receiver or soundbar, display, and selected video or audio format. A cable label does not add a feature that one of the connected devices lacks.

Why the HDMI version printed in a listing is not enough
HDMI cables are identified by official cable categories rather than by a single HDMI specification number. The HDMI specification describes what a system can do, while a cable category communicates the performance level for which that cable was designed or certified. A seller can call a product an “HDMI 2.1 cable,” but that phrase does not by itself tell you whether the cable is certified, what bandwidth it reached, which length was tested, or whether it supports the exact resolution and refresh rate you need.

HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. states: “You cannot use version numbers by themselves to define your product or component capabilities or the functionality of the HDMI interface.” Read the category name first: Standard HDMI Cable, High Speed HDMI Cable, Premium High Speed HDMI Cable, Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable, or Ultra96 HDMI Cable.

The same caution applies to a complete setup. A display may support 4K at a particular refresh rate while a source, AV receiver, soundbar, or cable does not. Conversely, a high-capacity cable cannot make an older source output a newer format. Identification tells you what the cable is; compatibility checking tells you whether the system will deliver the feature you want.
Where to find the cable’s official identity
Read the printing on the cable jacket
Look along the entire outer jacket, especially near either connector and at sections that are not covered by cable ties or sleeves. HDMI Licensing Administrator guidance says cable products are required to show the official cable name on the jacket. Look for wording such as “High Speed HDMI Cable,” “Premium High Speed HDMI Cable,” “Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable,” or “Ultra96 HDMI Cable.” The exact category wording matters more than a large speed claim printed on a retail card.
Do not infer the category from connector shape. Standard HDMI connectors, including the familiar Type A plug used with televisions and game consoles, can be used by several cable categories. Gold-plated contacts, a braided sleeve, a thick jacket, colored plugs, and an unusually heavy connector are construction or marketing details, not official performance classifications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the original package or saved product record
Find the box, hang tag, blister card, invoice, or saved product page that came with the cable. The package should repeat the official cable name and, for certified products, show the applicable certification label. If you have several cables that look alike, the package is useful for tying a particular model and length to the cable in your hand.
A retailer description can help locate the model, but an unverified description is not the same as an official certification record. Match the wording on the jacket and package instead of relying on a generic “8K,” “120 Hz,” or “48 Gbps” badge.

Scan the certification QR code
Certified Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 products use an official package label with a QR code. A standard QR-code app can scan the label and open a verification result. Compare the returned brand, model, cable type, and length with the package and the physical cable. A scan that belongs to a different length or model does not verify the cable you are holding.
Keep the package until you have confirmed the cable in your installation. Certification is tied to the tested model and, for Ultra High Speed products, the tested cable length. If a label is damaged, the scan cannot be completed, or the result does not match the cable, treat the category as unverified rather than assuming the best case.

HDMI cable categories and the formats they are intended to handle
The figures below are the capacities and examples HDMI Licensing Administrator currently lists in its cable guidance, accessed in 2026. They describe cable-category limits or example configurations, not independent laboratory testing of a cable you own.
| Official cable name | HDMI Licensing Administrator capacity or examples | What the identification tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Standard HDMI Cable | Earlier consumer uses; tested for 720p or 1080i | Do not assume support for later resolutions, refresh rates, or bandwidth requirements. |
| High Speed HDMI Cable | Up to 10.2Gbps; examples include 4K at 30Hz, 3D, and Deep Color | “With Ethernet” identifies a dedicated HDMI Ethernet Channel, which works only when both connected devices support it. |
| Premium High Speed HDMI Cable | Certified for up to 18Gbps; examples include 4K at 60Hz, HDR, and BT.2020 | A certified High Speed class with an official label and verification program. |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable | Up to 48Gbps; system examples include 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 120Hz | Look for the official certification label and QR verification; the model and length are tested. |
| Ultra96 HDMI Cable | Up to 96Gbps; HDMI Licensing Administrator says it supports HDMI 2.2 applications | Look for the Ultra96 certification label and verify it by QR scan. |
The examples are not blanket guarantees for every color depth, chroma format, compression mode, or device combination. For example, “4K at 120Hz” describes a system configuration; whether it works depends on the source output, display input, selected color settings, and any receiver or soundbar in between.
How to identify your cable, step by step
- Disconnect or safely expose the cable. If the jacket is hidden behind a wall panel or cabinet, turn off the connected equipment before moving it. Avoid pulling on the connector shell; hold the plug when you reposition the cable.
- Inspect both sides of the jacket. Slowly rotate the cable and look for the official cable name. Check near both plugs and along the middle section. Record the exact wording, including “Premium,” “Ultra High Speed,” “Ultra96,” or “with Ethernet.”
- Find the package or product record. Locate the box, label, receipt, order record, or manufacturer model information. Confirm that the package name agrees with the jacket. If the package identifies a different model or length, do not merge the two records.
- Look for the official certification label. Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 cables should have the applicable official package label. A large resolution or bandwidth graphic without that label is not the certification mark described by HDMI Licensing Administrator.
- Scan the QR code with a standard QR app. Open the result and compare the listed brand, model, cable type, and length with the physical cable and package. Save a screenshot or note the result if you may need to identify the cable later.
- Write down the complete identification. Record the official category, model, length, and whether the label says “with Ethernet.” This prevents two similar cables in a media cabinet from being confused.
- Compare the category with the required system format. Note the source’s output resolution and refresh rate, the display’s input capability, HDR or color requirements, audio-return needs, and any intermediate receiver or soundbar. Choose the lowest-capability link in that chain as the practical limit.
- Test the intended setting. Select the desired format in the source or display menu. Confirm that the expected resolution and refresh rate appear and that audio returns correctly. A successful handshake demonstrates that the current combination works in that configuration; it does not change the cable’s official category.
How to tell whether the cable supports a specific feature
4K video
“4K” alone is incomplete. High Speed HDMI Cable guidance includes 4K at 30Hz as an example, while Premium High Speed guidance includes 4K at 60Hz. If your requirement is ordinary 4K playback at 30Hz, a verified High Speed cable may fit the stated example. If you require 4K at 60Hz with HDR or BT.2020, the Premium High Speed category is the relevant certified class in HDMI Licensing Administrator’s examples.

Check the source and display menus as well. A television that accepts 4K at 60Hz on one input may offer a different capability on another, and a receiver can limit the signal if it does not pass the same format. Set the source to the exact resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, and color option you intend to use, then verify the display’s information panel.
4K at 120Hz
HDMI Licensing Administrator lists 4K at 120Hz as an example configuration for Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. For that target, look for the official Ultra High Speed cable name and certification label, then verify the QR result for the exact model and length. Check that the source, display input, and any receiver or soundbar also support 4K at 120Hz. A cable marked only “4K” or “HDMI 2.1” does not establish that combination.
8K video
Ultra High Speed examples include 8K at 60Hz. Ultra96 guidance includes 8K at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma and 10- or 12-bit color among its examples. Those are different requirements: resolution, refresh rate, chroma format, and bit depth all affect the signal. Read the source and display specifications for the exact mode, and verify the cable category rather than relying on an 8K badge.
HDR and wide-color formats
Premium High Speed guidance cites HDR and BT.2020 in its 18Gbps examples. A Premium certification identifies the cable class, but HDR still requires compatible source and display hardware, appropriate settings, and correct handling by any receiver in the path. If HDR is missing, check that it is enabled on every relevant device before blaming the cable.
Audio return, including eARC
Audio-return requirements belong in the system check. The cable category by itself does not prove that a television and soundbar or receiver support a particular audio-return mode, including eARC. Verify the audio-return feature on both devices, use the ports labeled for it, and confirm that any intermediate component passes the selected audio format. If video works but return audio does not, inspect device settings and port assignments as well as the cable identification.

HDMI Ethernet Channel
Some High Speed cables are labeled “with Ethernet.” That wording refers to a dedicated HDMI Ethernet Channel. It functions only if both connected devices support the channel; the cable label cannot add Ethernet capability to devices that do not implement it. The feature is separate from ordinary internet access over a device’s own network connection.
What an unmarked or unknown cable can—and cannot—tell you
If the jacket has no official name and the packaging or product record is gone, the official identification method does not provide a conclusive visual-only classification. Thickness, flexibility, braid, connector appearance, contact plating, and cable color cannot establish whether a cable is Standard, High Speed, Premium High Speed, Ultra High Speed, or Ultra96.
You can still try the cable in a known setup, but a successful picture is not a certification record. A connection may negotiate a lower mode, and a cable can work at one length or format while failing at another. Likewise, a temporary black screen or flicker does not prove that the cable is the sole cause; source settings, display firmware, receiver compatibility, electromagnetic interference, and damaged ports can produce similar symptoms.
If the required capability matters and the category cannot be confirmed, the practical choice is a replacement with the appropriate official name and, where applicable, certification label. For a system that needs up to 48Gbps, that means looking for a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and verifying the exact model and length. This is a way to remove uncertainty, not proof that the unidentified cable has failed.

The cable is labeled correctly, but the desired mode is unavailable
- Confirm that the source output and display input both list the requested resolution and refresh rate.
- Check every intermediate receiver, switch, splitter, capture device, or soundbar; one component with a lower limit can constrain the chain.
- Use the display’s information screen to see the signal actually being received rather than relying on the source’s selected setting.
- Try a direct source-to-display connection to isolate an intermediate component.
- Inspect both connectors for bent contacts, debris, looseness, or strain. Replace a physically damaged cable even when its category is certified.
- For certified Ultra High Speed or Ultra96 products, recheck that the QR result matches the cable’s model and length.
The picture cuts out, flickers, or shows sparkles
Intermittent symptoms can indicate a marginal link, damaged hardware, excessive length for the selected mode, poor connector contact, or interference. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s Ultra High Speed guidance discusses cable certification and testing by model and length; use that information when selecting a replacement. Reduce variables by connecting the source directly to the display, using the shortest suitable cable, and testing the same format again. Do not use a thicker jacket as a substitute for verified certification.

Video works but HDR or high refresh rate does not
This usually means the system is negotiating a lower format or that a device setting is disabled. Recheck the exact mode supported by the source and display, enable the relevant option in each device menu, and verify that a receiver or soundbar is not limited to an older input standard. Then compare the required mode with the cable category: Premium High Speed examples cover 4K at 60Hz with HDR, while Ultra High Speed examples cover 4K at 120Hz.
Audio return fails after a cable change
Confirm that the cable is plugged into the display’s audio-return port and the receiver or soundbar’s matching port. Turn on the audio-return setting on both devices, select the correct input, and check whether the receiver supports the audio format. The cable category is only one part of this path; a label cannot compensate for incompatible ports or disabled settings.
Common identification mistakes
- Equating “HDMI 2.1” with a certified cable category. Version numbers alone do not define cable or component capabilities.
- Buying by a resolution badge. “8K” or “4K 120” printed on a package is not the same as the official Ultra High Speed or Ultra96 identification and certification process.
- Assuming all cables of one apparent size are equivalent. Construction appearance is not an official classification method.
- Ignoring length. For certified products, verify the model and length shown by the QR result, not just the family name.
- Checking only the source and television. Receivers, soundbars, switches, and splitters can determine the format that reaches the display.
- Assuming a working image proves every feature. A cable can pass a lower-bandwidth mode while failing a higher refresh rate, HDR setting, or color format.
- Treating “with Ethernet” as universal networking. The dedicated HDMI Ethernet Channel requires support from both connected devices.
A quick decision checklist
- Read the official cable name printed on the jacket.
- Match that name to the package or saved product record.
- For Ultra High Speed or Ultra96, locate the official certification label.
- Scan its QR code and match brand, model, type, and length.
- Write down the exact video and audio format you need, not just “4K” or “8K.”
- Check the source, display, receiver or soundbar, and any switch for that same format.
- Test the selected mode and verify the signal information shown by the display.
- If the cable is unmarked and its records are unavailable, do not claim a category from appearance alone. Replace it only when the required capability cannot otherwise be confirmed.
What to do when buying a replacement
Buy to the requirement, not to the highest-sounding number. A system that needs up to 48Gbps should use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with a QR-verifiable model and length. A system whose requirements fit the 18Gbps Premium High Speed examples can use that category when the source and display support the same 4K, HDR, or BT.2020 mode. Ultra96 is the category to investigate for HDMI 2.2 applications and the higher-bandwidth examples HDMI Licensing Administrator lists, such as 8K at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma and 10- or 12-bit color.
