A profile shown in the list is not necessarily active. In the same screen, set preferred lines independently for calls, text messages, and mobile data.
Check whether an eSIM is enabled
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then SIM manager. Some Samsung support pages call this screen SIM Card Manager.
- Find the eSIM in the list and check its control. If it is enabled, the line is on; if it is disabled, switch it on if you want to use it. A stored profile can remain listed while turned off, so its presence alone does not mean it is active. Samsung describes SIM Manager as the place to activate or deactivate SIM connections and activate eSIMs. Samsung Galaxy S23 series eSIM guidance and the Galaxy S23 series user manual cover these controls.
Here, “active” means enabled on the phone. It does not by itself establish that the carrier plan is activated, that the line has service at your location, or that it is the line currently selected for data.

Choose the default line for calls, texts, and data
In Settings > Connections > SIM manager, find Preferred SIMs or the equivalent controls. Pick a line separately for each activity:

- Text messages: choose the line the phone should prefer for messages.
- Mobile data: choose the line that should provide cellular data.
These are separate preferences, not one universal default. Samsung’s manual describes selecting preferred SIMs for features such as voice calls when two cards are activated. Available choices and labels may differ by software version, device variant, and provider. Samsung’s dual-SIM instructions explain the line choices.

- Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.
Choose a different line for one call or message
You can make a one-time choice without changing the saved preference. Samsung documents selecting a SIM from the Quick Panel, or choosing the line in the Phone or Messages app when placing a call or sending a message. This is useful when a particular action should use another line.
Decide whether to enable data switching
Data switching or Auto data switching is separate from the preferred mobile-data line. When enabled, the phone may use another SIM for data if the preferred line cannot connect. Samsung’s S23 manual warns that this can result in additional charges. Check the applicable plan and roaming terms before enabling it; Samsung does not prescribe which line or plan to choose.

If the eSIM is missing or will not work
- Confirm compatibility: Samsung says Galaxy S23 series eSIM support depends on the device model, region, and provider. The series supports eSIM and mixed physical-SIM/eSIM configurations in supported variants, but availability is not universal. See Samsung’s eSIM activation and compatibility guidance.
- Confirm carrier service and activation: eSIM use requires a supported carrier plan. Activation may involve following the carrier’s instructions, such as scanning a QR code; a listed profile alone does not confirm that service is ready.
- Check regional and software differences: Menu names and screens can vary by model, software, and provider. If the steps do not match, look for SIM Card Manager or ask the carrier or Samsung support for instructions for your exact variant. Samsung outlines relevant eSIM limitations.
- Interpret “Emergency calls only” carefully: Samsung notes this can appear when there is no active eSIM or physical SIM. It does not identify which specific eSIM is enabled.
Choose the line that fits how you use the phone
Set calls, messages, and data according to your needs rather than assuming they must all use the same SIM. Consider which line has reliable coverage where you use the phone, which plan is appropriate for your use, and whether the other line should serve as data fallback. Account for possible roaming or switching charges before using a line for data.
