Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo see the driver associated with a specific device, open Device Manager, expand the relevant hardware category, open the device’s Properties, and select the Driver tab. To see driver updates offered to your Windows installation, use Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates. These paths answer different questions: Device Manager is for inspecting a device, while Windows Update is for finding available updates.
Start with Device Manager when you need to identify an installed driver
Device Manager is Windows 11’s built-in, device-by-device view. It is the most direct route when you are asking, “What driver is this particular device using?” It focuses on the hardware entry you select rather than presenting a general list of updates.

Open Device Manager
- Open Start and search for Device Manager.
- Select the Device Manager result. You can also open the Start context menu and choose Device Manager if that option is available there.
- In the Device Manager window, find the category that contains the hardware you want to inspect.
Device Manager displays hardware in expandable categories. If you are checking more than one component, expand each relevant category in turn rather than assuming that one entry represents the entire computer.
Open the selected device’s driver details
- Expand the appropriate category by selecting its arrow.
- Right-click the device entry.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
The Driver tab shows the driver information associated with that selected device. This is the point at which you can check the installed details for an individual component. Close the Properties window and repeat the same sequence for another entry when you need a broader inventory.

Build a useful inventory instead of checking only one entry
There is no need to inspect every category if you are troubleshooting one known component. For a general inventory, however, work category by category and record the device name together with the information shown on its Driver tab. Keeping the device name with its driver details prevents a list of similar entries from becoming ambiguous later.
A practical inventory sequence
- Write down the reason for the check, such as investigating a warning, documenting a working system, or preparing to compare a manufacturer’s driver with the installed one.
- Expand one hardware category.
- Open each device’s Properties and then its Driver tab.
- Record the device name and the driver details shown there before moving to the next entry.
- Continue with the other categories that matter to your check.
For a single-device question, stop after the selected device has been identified. For a system-wide review, repeat the process for each relevant category. Device Manager’s organization is by hardware device, so a complete review requires more than opening one category.
Do not confuse installed-driver inspection with Windows Update
Windows Update and Device Manager are related, but they serve different purposes. Device Manager answers which driver details are associated with the device you selected. Windows Update checks what Microsoft offers for this Windows installation and also handles many driver updates automatically.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Open Driver updates.
This page lists optional driver updates that Windows Update is offering to the installation. It is an update-availability view, not a complete device-by-device inventory. A device may have a driver installed even when this page has nothing to offer.
Windows regularly checks for driver updates and automatically downloads and installs a newer driver when one is available through its normal update process. Therefore, simply checking which driver is installed is not a reason to replace it. Use the Device Manager procedure when your goal is inspection; use Windows Update when your goal is to see whether an update is being offered.
Which route should you use?
| Route | Best for | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager > device Properties > Driver | Inspecting a particular device’s installed driver details | Driver information associated with the selected device |
| Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates | Checking driver updates offered to this Windows installation | Available optional driver updates; Windows Update also installs many recommended drivers automatically |
Choose Device Manager when the question begins with “Which driver is this device using?” Choose Windows Update when it begins with “Is an update available for this installation?” You may use both during troubleshooting, but the second path does not replace the first when you need a device-level record.
Why an old-looking driver date does not prove that a driver is obsolete
The date displayed for a driver should not be used as a simple freshness ranking. Microsoft explains that the driver provider sets the descriptive date shown in the interface, while Windows Update uses targeting information inside driver files to choose which driver is appropriate for a device.

“Driver dates might look old, but that is not true.”
That statement appears in Microsoft Support’s Understanding driver updates article, published October 20, 2025. The practical implication is that a later-looking date is not, by itself, proof that another driver is better, newer in the way you expect, or suitable for your hardware.
How to interpret the date during a review
- Treat the displayed date as descriptive information, not a standalone verdict.
- Do not remove a working driver solely because its date appears old.
- Use Windows Update’s offered update, or the device maker’s official support information, when you have a genuine update need.
- Compare the complete device and driver context rather than ranking entries by date alone.
Multiple related driver entries can be normal
A device design may divide separate functions among several drivers. As a result, seeing multiple related entries does not automatically mean that Windows has installed duplicates that should be deleted. Provider version numbering can also be unintuitive, so similar-looking numbers are not enough to establish that one entry is unnecessary.
What to do when entries look duplicated
- Check the exact device name for each entry.
- Open each entry’s Properties and inspect its Driver tab separately.
- Note whether the entries represent different functions or components.
- Leave working entries in place unless you have a specific, documented reason to change them.
This approach avoids turning a normal multi-driver design into an accidental removal or rollback. The purpose of the inventory is to understand the system first; it is not an instruction to simplify every similar-looking entry.

If a device has a warning or error, Device Manager can provide a code that helps identify the type of failure. Record the code together with the device name before searching for a fix or contacting the hardware maker.
Code 28: the driver is not installed
Microsoft documents Code 28 as meaning that the drivers for the device are not installed. In that situation, the missing-driver status is more significant than an apparently old date on another device. Check Windows Update for an offered driver, then consult the hardware maker’s official support page if a suitable driver is not supplied through Windows.
Code 52: signature verification failed
Code 52 indicates that Windows cannot verify the driver’s digital signature. This is a different condition from a missing driver. Record the code exactly and use the device maker’s support information or Microsoft’s guidance to determine the supported next step rather than treating the problem as a simple version mismatch.

Record the evidence before changing anything
- Device name and category
- The warning or error shown by Device Manager
- The Device Manager code, if one is present
- The driver details shown on the Driver tab
- Whether Windows Update lists an optional driver update
This record gives a support technician or hardware maker enough context to distinguish a missing driver from a signature-verification problem and from a device that is functioning normally.
When should you update a driver?
Checking an installed driver and deciding to update it are separate actions. If the device works and you are only documenting what is installed, leave it alone after recording the details. If Windows Update offers a driver, or the hardware maker identifies a driver that addresses your specific problem, evaluate that update in the context of the affected device.
Use Windows Update first for an offered update
For an update that Windows 11 itself offers, check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates. Windows Update also installs many recommended drivers automatically, so the absence of an optional listing does not mean that no driver is installed.
Use the hardware maker’s official support page when necessary
If a driver is missing, a device has an error, or the manufacturer provides a fix for your exact hardware, obtain the driver from the device maker’s official support site. Microsoft advises avoiding driver downloads from other websites. Third-party download pages can make it difficult to verify whether a package is intended for the device or whether it has been altered.
Match the support download to the hardware and Windows installation identified in your notes. Do not select a package merely because its displayed date is newer or because its name resembles another entry. The device identity and the manufacturer’s compatibility information matter more than a date viewed in isolation.
A complete Windows 11 driver-check workflow
The following workflow keeps inspection, update discovery, and troubleshooting in the right order.
- Define the scope. Decide whether you are checking one device or documenting several categories.
- Inspect the device in Device Manager. Expand its category, open Properties, and select the Driver tab.
- Record the details. Keep the device name beside the driver information and any warning code.
- Check status. Note whether Device Manager reports a warning or a specific code.
- Check Windows Update separately. Open the Optional updates and Driver updates path to see what this installation is being offered.
- Interpret dates cautiously. Do not classify a driver as obsolete from its displayed date alone.
- Investigate errors. Treat Code 28 as a missing-driver condition and Code 52 as a signature-verification condition.
- Choose a source. Start with Windows Update; if an update is still needed, use the hardware maker’s official support page.
- Recheck the affected device. After a supported change, return to Device Manager and inspect the same device’s Properties and Driver tab.
Common mistakes to avoid
Looking only at Windows Update
Windows Update can show available optional updates, but it is not a complete inventory of every installed device driver. Use Device Manager for the installed details of a particular device.

Assuming the newest date is automatically best
The provider controls the descriptive date, and Windows Update uses targeting information when selecting a driver. A date comparison without that context can lead to an unnecessary replacement.
Deleting similar entries because they look duplicated
Separate functions may use separate drivers, and provider version numbering may not be intuitive. Inspect the exact device and its Driver tab before making any change.
Downloading from an unofficial driver site
Microsoft recommends using Windows Update or the hardware maker’s official support page rather than other download websites. Keep the source decision tied to the device you identified.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the result tells you—and what it does not
A Device Manager check tells you which driver details are associated with the selected device and whether Windows reports a status problem for it. It does not, by itself, establish that another driver would improve performance, that a date is too old, or that every similar entry is redundant.
The Windows Update check tells you whether optional driver updates are being offered to this installation and complements the automatic driver servicing Windows already performs. Using both views gives you the clearest answer without treating update availability as a substitute for an installed-driver inventory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see every installed driver in one Windows 11 list?
Device Manager is organized by hardware device rather than as a single update list. Expand each relevant category, open each device’s Properties, and select the Driver tab. For a broad inventory, record the device name with the driver details and repeat the process across the categories that matter.
Why does Windows Update show no driver update when I know a driver is installed?
The Optional updates page shows driver updates offered to that Windows installation; it is not a complete inventory. Windows may already have a working driver, may service it automatically, or may have no optional package to offer. Check Device Manager for the installed details.
Best Value
Should I replace a driver because its date looks old?
No. Microsoft says the provider sets the descriptive driver date, while Windows Update uses targeting information in driver files when choosing what to install. Treat the date as context, not proof that a driver is obsolete or that another package is better.
Are several similar driver entries a sign that I should delete some?
Not necessarily. A device can divide separate functions among multiple drivers, and provider version numbering may be unintuitive. Check each exact device name and its Driver tab separately, and leave working entries alone unless you have a specific documented reason to change them.
What does Device Manager Code 28 mean?
Code 28 means the drivers for the device are not installed. Check Windows Update for an offered driver, then use the hardware maker’s official support page if Windows does not provide a suitable package.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What does Device Manager Code 52 mean?
Code 52 means Windows cannot verify the driver’s digital signature. It is a signature-verification problem, not simply the same as a missing driver. Record the code and consult Microsoft or the device maker for the supported next step.
Where should I download a driver if Windows does not offer one?
Use the device manufacturer’s official support site and match the package to the identified hardware and Windows installation. Microsoft advises avoiding driver downloads from other websites, where compatibility and package integrity can be difficult to verify.
Do I need to update a driver just because I checked it?
No. Inspection and updating are separate actions. If the device works and you are documenting its installed details, there is no need to replace the driver merely because you viewed it. Consider an update when Windows Update offers one or the manufacturer identifies a fix for your specific problem.
The Bottom Line
Use Device Manager > device Properties > Driver to identify the driver associated with a specific Windows 11 device. Use Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates only to check updates offered to the installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not judge a driver by its displayed date alone, remove similar entries without checking their functions, or download packages from unofficial sites. For errors such as Code 28 or Code 52, record the exact device and status, then use Windows Update or the manufacturer’s official support page.
