To see which Galaxy apps have sent notifications most recently, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, open the menu near the top, and choose Most recent. This gives you an app list rather than a replay of every alert. Samsung documents this view as the list of apps that have sent notifications: Samsung US Support.
If you dismissed or snoozed the alert, use Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. History must have been enabled before the alert arrived, and Samsung describes the available window as the last 24 hours; turning it on now cannot recover an earlier notification.

Which Galaxy setting should you use?
There are two related controls, and choosing the right one avoids a lot of searching. Most recent answers “Which apps have sent notifications?” It is an app-level list under App notifications. Notification history answers “What did the notification say after I dismissed it?” It is an alert-level record under Advanced settings.
| What you are trying to find | Path | What appears | Important requirement or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apps that recently sent any notification | Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Most recent | A list of apps that have sent notifications, with each app opening its notification controls | No advance setup is stated for viewing this list. Samsung calls it “Recently sent notifications.” |
| An alert you dismissed or snoozed | Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history | Recent notification records, including dismissed or snoozed alerts | History must have been enabled before the alert arrived. Samsung describes a 24-hour view, not permanent storage. |
| An unexplained notification sound | Start with Notification history if it was already enabled; otherwise check Most recent | Either the matching alert record or the apps that recently sent alerts | If history was off when the sound occurred, the earlier alert cannot be reconstructed by enabling it later. |

- Tap Notifications. This page contains the controls for notification behavior on the phone.
- Tap App notifications. Galaxy lists the apps that can send notifications.
- Open the drop-down menu near the top and choose Most recent. The list is sorted or filtered to show apps that have sent notifications recently, instead of presenting the full app list alphabetically.
- Tap an app name to inspect its controls. The app’s notification page is where you can manage the notifications that app is allowed to send. The exact switches and categories can differ by app and Galaxy software version.
Samsung’s support wording describes this area as “Recently sent notifications: View a list of apps that have sent notifications.” The list identifies the sender at app level; it does not guarantee that the complete text of every dismissed alert will be visible there.
What to do after you identify an app
Open the app entry rather than turning off notifications globally. The resulting page contains the controls Samsung and the app expose for that application. Depending on the app, you may see separate notification categories or different alert options. Review the labels carefully and change only the category or behavior connected with the unwanted sound. The available controls are app-specific, so one app may offer more choices than another.
Recover a dismissed or snoozed alert with Notification history
When the notification shade no longer contains an alert, Notification history is the built-in place to inspect recent records. Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions specifically point to this view when a Galaxy phone makes a notification sound that you cannot explain.
- Open Settings and tap Notifications.
- Tap Advanced settings. On supported Galaxy software, this is where additional notification controls are grouped.
- Tap Notification history. The page shows the history control and, when available, recent records.
- If the switch is off, turn it on. This begins recording notifications from that point forward. It does not fill the page with alerts that arrived before the switch was enabled.
- Return to Notification history after a new alert arrives. Expand the relevant record to read what was captured, then use the app information or the app’s notification controls if you need to change future alerts.
Samsung US describes Notification history as a place to view notifications already dismissed or snoozed, along with notifications received in the last 24 hours: Samsung’s notification-sound troubleshooting guide. Samsung’s Japan support instructions, updated May 22, 2026, provide the same 24-hour behavior and state that enabling history cannot expose notifications from before enablement: Samsung Japan Support.
Enable it before you need it
If you often dismiss banners quickly or investigate intermittent sounds, turn Notification history on while the phone is working normally. The setting is useful as a forward-looking log: it starts recording only after activation. There is no supported way to make the phone reconstruct an alert that arrived earlier while the feature was disabled.
What “Most recent” shows—and what it does not
It is an app list, not a message archive
Most recent tells you which applications have recently generated notifications. If you heard a sound and are unsure whether it came from a messaging app, calendar, browser, shopping app, or another service, this is the quickest way to narrow the candidates. Selecting an app opens that app’s notification controls, so you can continue troubleshooting from the same screen.
The view is not described as a permanent, searchable transcript of every message. If you need the wording of an alert that has already disappeared, use Notification history instead—and only if history had been recording at the time.

Use it when the alert is still visible
If the notification is still in the notification shade, you can identify its app directly from the notification card and then open the app’s notification settings. Most recent is useful when the shade has been cleared, when several alerts arrived close together, or when you remember the sound but not the icon.
Why an app may not be at the top
The Most recent view is intended to show apps that have sent notifications recently, not every app installed on the phone in alphabetical order. An app that has not generated an alert during the relevant period may not appear among the recent entries. If you already know the app’s name, switch back to the full App notifications list and select it directly.
What Notification history can and cannot recover
It covers a limited recent window
Samsung support describes Notification history as covering notifications received in the previous 24 hours. Treat that as a rolling recent-history view, not an archive that keeps alerts indefinitely. An alert older than that period may no longer appear even when history remains enabled.
It must be enabled in advance
History starts collecting after you switch it on. If a sound happened while the feature was disabled, opening the setting later cannot recreate the missing record. This is the most important distinction between turning the feature on for future troubleshooting and recovering something that already happened.

Samsung Japan’s support instructions state that notification-history records are cleared when the feature is turned off. If you are relying on the records to investigate repeated sounds, leave the feature enabled until you have finished checking them. Turning it off to hide clutter and then turning it back on starts a new record rather than restoring the old one.
A practical workflow for an unexplained notification sound
Use the following order when the phone made a sound but you did not see which app caused it.

- Check Notification history first if it was already enabled. Go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history and look for a record near the time of the sound.
- Identify the app in the record. The notification entry can reveal which app produced the alert and may preserve enough of the alert to distinguish a message, reminder, system event, or other trigger.
- Check Most recent if history has no matching entry. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select Most recent, and review the apps listed there.
- Open the suspected app’s notification controls. Tapping the app from the list takes you to its notification settings, where you can adjust the available notification options for that app.
- Enable history for the next occurrence if it was off. Future alerts can then be recorded within Samsung’s recent-history window. Enabling it after the fact will not add the earlier sound.
This order separates identification from prevention. First establish which app generated the event; only then change that app’s notification categories. It avoids silencing unrelated apps because several applications can use similar sounds.
How to choose the right route in common situations
| Situation | Best first step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You dismissed a banner and want to read it again | Notification history | History is designed to include dismissed and snoozed notifications, provided it was enabled when the alert arrived. |
| You heard a sound but cannot remember the app | Notification history, then Most recent | History may show the actual alert; Most recent still helps identify apps that sent notifications when no record is available. |
| The notification is still in the shade | Tap the notification or identify its app directly | You do not need history to inspect an alert that is still present. Most recent can then take you to the app’s controls. |
| You want to stop or change an app’s alerts | Most recent > tap the app | The app entry opens its notification controls, avoiding a search through the entire app list. |
| You enabled history after the sound | Use Most recent for clues and wait for a future alert | History does not reconstruct notifications from before it was enabled. |
| You need to know whether an alert was snoozed | Notification history | Samsung specifically includes snoozed notifications in the history view when the feature was active. |
| You are checking several alerts from different apps | Most recent first, then open each relevant app | The app-level list quickly narrows the candidates and provides a direct route to each app’s controls. |
Troubleshooting when the menus look different
Search Settings for the feature name
Samsung says that settings labels and layout can vary by Galaxy model and software version. If you do not see Advanced settings in the expected position, use the search field at the top of Settings and search for Notification history. Open the matching result rather than guessing at a nearby menu. For the app list, search for App notifications and look for a sorting or filtering control that includes Most recent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the phone’s software version and model
The exact path above reflects Samsung’s current support instructions, but a carrier edition, regional firmware build, or older Galaxy release may arrange the controls differently. Check Settings > About phone for the model and software information, then compare the labels shown on the device with Samsung support guidance for that model. Do not assume a missing label means the phone cannot send notifications; it may simply use a different menu arrangement.
History is empty
- Confirm that Notification history was enabled before the notification arrived.
- Consider whether the alert is outside Samsung’s stated 24-hour history window.
- Check whether history was switched off, which Samsung Japan says clears the stored records.
- If you only need to identify the sender, use App notifications > Most recent instead of waiting for a history record.
The app does not appear under Most recent
Most recent lists apps that have sent notifications recently. An app that has not generated a notification during the relevant period may not appear at the top of that view. Open the full App notifications list if you already know the app and want to inspect its controls directly.
You cannot find the drop-down menu
On some versions, the sorting control may be displayed as a filter, selector, or compact menu near the top of App notifications. Look for a control whose choices include Most recent. If the wording is different, search Settings for “notification” and verify the software version before changing unrelated settings.
You are investigating a sound with no visible banner
A sound without an obvious card is exactly the situation Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance addresses. If history was active, inspect it first. If it was not active, the phone cannot supply a past history record, so use Most recent to identify apps that have sent alerts and leave history enabled for the next occurrence.

Using the result to manage future notifications
Once you identify the sending app, tap its entry from the Most recent list or from a history record’s app details. Galaxy opens that app’s notification controls. From there, review the options presented for that app and change only the categories or alert behaviors you intend to change. App-specific controls vary, so do not assume that every application exposes the same switches.
If the sound was caused by an app you still need, identifying it does not require disabling all notifications. Use the available controls to reduce or modify the unwanted alert while leaving important categories enabled. If the sound was unexpected and you cannot identify a matching record, keep Notification history enabled so the next occurrence leaves a record within the 24-hour window.
Privacy and retention considerations
Notification history can contain portions of alerts that you dismissed or snoozed, so treat the screen as notification content rather than merely a list of app names. Samsung’s documented behavior is limited to recent records, with a 24-hour window. If you no longer want those records retained, switching the feature off clears the stored history according to Samsung Japan’s instructions; switching it on again begins a new collection period.
Key limits to remember
- Most recent identifies apps; it is not a guaranteed transcript of dismissed notification text.
- Notification history records alerts; it is the better route for dismissed or snoozed notifications.
- History is forward-looking. Turning it on cannot recover an alert that arrived while it was off.
- The documented window is 24 hours, so do not rely on it as permanent storage.
- Turning history off clears its stored records according to Samsung Japan’s support instructions.
- Labels can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Search Settings for “Notification history” when the displayed path does not match.
- No accessory or separate app is required. Both checks use built-in Galaxy Settings.
For the fastest answer to “which app just sent something?”, use Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Most recent. For the contents of a dismissed alert, use Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history, with the advance-enablement and 24-hour limits in mind.

How do I see which apps recently sent notifications on my Samsung Galaxy?
Open Settings, tap Notifications, tap App notifications, open the menu near the top, and choose Most recent. Samsung labels this as the list of apps that have sent notifications recently.
Can I read a notification after I dismissed it?
Yes, if Notification history was enabled when the alert arrived. Go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. Samsung describes the history as covering recent alerts, including dismissed and snoozed notifications, within a 24-hour window.
Best Value
What if I turned on Notification history after the alert?
The earlier alert cannot be recovered. Turning the feature on starts recording future notifications; it does not reconstruct notifications received while the feature was off.
How long does Samsung Galaxy Notification history keep alerts?
Samsung support describes a 24-hour recent-history period. It is not permanent storage, so an older alert may disappear even when history remains enabled.
Recommended Free Tools
Does turning Notification history off delete the records?
Samsung Japan’s support instructions say that stored notification-history records are cleared when the feature is switched off. Turning it on again begins a new history.
Why is an app missing from the Most recent list?
Most recent is for apps that have sent notifications recently. An app that has not generated an alert during the relevant period may not appear there. Use the full App notifications list if you already know which app you want to manage.
My Galaxy menus do not match these steps. What should I do?
The labels and layout can vary by model and software version. Search Settings for “Notification history” or “App notifications,” check Settings > About phone for the model and software details, and use Samsung’s instructions for that device.
Do I need a separate app or accessory to identify the notification sender?
No. The Most recent app list and Notification history are built into Galaxy Settings.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Most recent to identify apps that recently sent alerts. Use Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history to inspect dismissed or snoozed notifications, but enable it before the event: Samsung documents a rolling 24-hour window, and enabling it later cannot recover an earlier alert.
