Find your iPhone’s CarPlay app list
The Customize screen is the consumer-facing answer to “Which apps have CarPlay support?” It is stored in your iPhone’s CarPlay settings, so you can check it while you are away from the vehicle.

- Open Settings on the iPhone that you use in the car.
- Tap General.
- Tap CarPlay.
- Choose the vehicle you have paired with the iPhone. If several vehicles are listed, select the specific one you want to inspect.
- Tap Customize.
- Review the apps shown in the available-app list and in the CarPlay layout.
Apple says this screen lets you add, delete, and reorder supported apps. Use the add control to place an available app in the CarPlay layout, the delete control to remove one, and the drag handles to change the order. Reconnect the iPhone to CarPlay after making changes; Apple says the apps should appear in that order the next time the iPhone connects.

That statement is important: the Customize list is not a catalog of every app installed on your phone. It is a list of apps that iOS has identified as eligible for CarPlay in the selected vehicle profile.
How to interpret what you see
An app in Customize
If an app appears in the Customize list, iOS recognizes that the app has exposed CarPlay support for the selected profile. You can choose whether it appears on the CarPlay home screen and where it sits in the order. Its presence does not mean that every feature in the iPhone app is available in the car. CarPlay exposes only the interfaces and actions that the developer implemented for the platform.
An app missing from Customize
If an installed app does not appear, it is not currently available to CarPlay in that configuration. The absence can mean that the developer has not shipped CarPlay support. Support can also differ between app releases or regions. Apple’s consumer documentation does not promise one universal list containing every app that works with CarPlay everywhere, so the list on your own iPhone is the practical authority for your setup.
A vehicle-specific profile
CarPlay settings are organized around the vehicle you select. If you regularly use more than one car, inspect each vehicle entry separately. An app’s appearance also depends on whether the connected vehicle supports the relevant CarPlay function. Seeing an app in one profile therefore does not guarantee the same presentation in another car.
What “CarPlay entitlement” means
“Entitlement” is primarily a developer term, not a hidden consumer menu. Apple grants and manages capabilities that allow an app to participate in CarPlay. A developer requests the appropriate capability. If Apple approves the request, the capability is added to the developer account as a managed capability.
The developer then enables the CarPlay capability for the app’s App ID, creates a provisioning profile that includes it, and adds the matching key to the app’s Entitlements.plist in Xcode. When that signed app is installed, iOS can recognize the declared CarPlay capability and expose the app’s supported interface to CarPlay.

As a user, you normally do not inspect the signed entitlement file. The Customize screen translates that developer-side configuration into a usable list: it shows apps that iOS can offer to your selected vehicle. If you are trying to diagnose a missing app, this distinction prevents a common misunderstanding. Installing an ordinary iPhone app cannot make it appear in CarPlay; the app must include Apple-approved CarPlay support.

Apple documents separate entitlement keys for several CarPlay categories. These keys describe the capability requested by the developer; they do not promise that every function of the iPhone app will be rendered on the car’s display.

Apple’s platform documentation also describes CarPlay experiences for audio, video in supported parked-car scenarios, messaging and VoIP, navigation, parking, electric-vehicle charging, quick food ordering, fueling, and driving tasks. The category and the app’s own implementation determine what you can do from the car.
What CarPlay may expose from an app
CarPlay is not a mirror of the iPhone screen. Depending on the category, an eligible app may provide one or more of the following:
- CarPlay templates: a driving-oriented interface designed for the vehicle display.
- Audio playback: browsing and controlling supported audio content while connected.
- Siri-mediated actions: voice requests for supported communication, media, or other app actions.
- Navigation guidance: map and turn-by-turn functions when the app has the navigation capability and the vehicle connection supports it.
- Category-specific actions: such as locating a charger, parking facility, fueling option, or quick-ordering service where the app implements that experience.
Two apps in the same category can expose different controls. Entitlement approval gives an app access to a category; it does not force the developer to implement every template or action that category allows.

Why an app may not appear
The developer has not shipped CarPlay support
Most iPhone apps do not automatically become CarPlay apps. The developer must request Apple’s capability, configure the App ID and provisioning profile, and ship an app containing the corresponding entitlement and CarPlay implementation. Until that happens, the app will not be offered in Customize.

Your installed release does not include the capability
CarPlay support can change with app releases. An older installed version may lack support that a newer release adds, while a particular release may expose a different set of functions. Check the app’s current version in the App Store and install an available update before treating the absence as permanent.
Availability differs by region
Apple’s consumer examples and the capabilities offered by third-party apps can vary by region. An app may be listed for users in one country but not exposed for another account or service area. The Customize list on the iPhone is the relevant check for your region rather than a list copied from another market.
The vehicle does not support the relevant function
CarPlay capability and vehicle capability are separate considerations. A navigation, charging, parking, or other category may be supported by the app but unavailable through a particular vehicle connection. Verify the vehicle profile you selected and reconnect before concluding that the app has no CarPlay support at all.

You are checking the wrong vehicle entry
If several cars have been paired, each can have its own arrangement. Return to Settings > General > CarPlay, select the vehicle you are currently using, and open Customize again.
Fix the layout after you find a supported app
Finding an app in Customize is only the first step. You can make the CarPlay home screen fit the way you drive without changing the app itself.
- In Settings > General > CarPlay, select the correct vehicle.
- Tap Customize.
- To add a supported app, use the add control beside it.
- To remove an app from the CarPlay layout, use the delete control.
- Press and drag the handle next to an app to place it higher or lower in the list.
- Connect the iPhone to CarPlay again. The revised order should be used on the next connection.
Removing an icon from the CarPlay layout does not mean the app has been uninstalled from the iPhone. It changes which supported apps are presented in that vehicle’s CarPlay arrangement.

Compare CarPlay apps using the right criteria
If you are deciding between several apps, an App Store description alone is not enough. Compare what each app actually exposes through CarPlay and whether it is available in your setup.

This approach avoids equating an entitlement category with a complete feature set. For example, two audio apps can both qualify for CarPlay while offering different browsing controls, Siri actions, or playback features.

Apple’s consumer-facing examples include Amazon Music, Audible, ChargePoint, Google Maps, Spotify, Waze, WhatsApp, and YouTube Music, along with other regional or category-specific apps. These examples illustrate the range of categories rather than a guarantee that every named app will appear for every iPhone, region, app release, or vehicle.
Use the examples as a starting point, then confirm the result on your own device. The decisive test is whether the app appears after you select your vehicle and open Customize.
Can you inspect entitlements without a Mac?
Yes, if your goal is to see which apps you can use in your car. The entire consumer check—opening Settings, selecting General and CarPlay, choosing a vehicle, and tapping Customize—takes place on the iPhone. You do not need Xcode, a Mac, or access to a developer account to manage that list.
A Mac and Apple’s developer tools are relevant only to the developer-side inspection and configuration process. Developers use the Apple Developer account, App ID settings, provisioning profile, and Xcode’s Entitlements.plist to request and embed the capability. A regular user cannot grant an entitlement to an app or add a missing CarPlay category through iPhone settings.
Troubleshooting checklist
Work through these checks in order when an app you expect is absent or does not behave as expected:
- Confirm the path: open Settings > General > CarPlay, not a general list of installed apps.
- Select the active vehicle: inspect the profile for the car you are about to use.
- Open Customize: an app must be listed there before it can be arranged on the CarPlay home screen.
- Check for an app update: support may depend on the installed release.
- Consider region: availability can differ by country or service area.
- Check the category: charging, parking, navigation, audio, and other experiences depend on both the app’s entitlement and the vehicle’s supported CarPlay functions.
- Reconnect after changes: Apple says the revised order appears the next time the iPhone connects.
- Do not confuse removal with uninstalling: deleting an icon from Customize changes the CarPlay layout, not the iPhone app installation.
What this check cannot tell you
The Customize list confirms current availability for the selected iPhone and vehicle profile, but it is not a public inventory of all CarPlay-entitled apps. Apple’s documentation does not publish a universal count or percentage of iPhone apps with entitlements, and the reviewed official material provides no prevalence statistic.
The list also cannot reveal every implementation detail. It does not show which entitlement key an app uses, which internal templates the developer selected, or whether every feature works in every vehicle. For those details, the developer’s implementation and Apple’s category rules matter. For everyday use, however, the list answers the practical question: which apps can this iPhone present through CarPlay in this car right now?

Where is the list of CarPlay apps on an iPhone?
