How to Check Which Apps Are Using the Most Storage on a Mac

On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage, then select Applications. On earlier macOS releases, use Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. The Applications view shows how much space installed, non-system apps are using so you can identify the largest items before deciding what to remove or move.

Start with the macOS version split

Apple changed the route to storage information when it introduced System Settings in macOS Ventura 13. Use the path that matches the Mac’s operating system:

macOS version Where to look What to open next
Ventura 13 or later Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage Select Applications, then use Info or More Info if that control appears
Earlier macOS versions Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage Open the storage overview and choose the Applications category when available

These are Apple’s documented routes in its storage support article and Mac user guide. If the labels differ slightly, stay in the Storage view and look for the category named Applications; Apple can adjust the presentation between macOS releases.

Check app storage in macOS Ventura 13 or later

  1. Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  2. Choose System Settings.
  3. Select General in the sidebar.
  4. Click Storage. macOS may take a moment to calculate the categories.
  5. In the storage chart or category list, choose Applications.
  6. Review the application entries and their reported storage use. If the pane offers an Info or More Info button, open it for the category details.

The chart groups the Mac’s occupied space by apps and other file types and also shows available space. Use the Applications category to find which installed apps account for the largest share. The category excludes system applications, so it is not a complete list of every application-related file on the Mac.

Check app storage on an earlier macOS release

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Choose About This Mac.
  3. Open the Storage tab.
  4. Wait for macOS to finish calculating the storage chart.
  5. Open the Applications category, if it is shown, to inspect installed app usage.

The older About This Mac view serves the same purpose as the newer Storage pane, but its layout and available controls can vary by release. If you cannot see an application list immediately, select the category in the chart or use the available details control in that window.

How to read the Storage view

The chart is an overview, not a file-by-file inventory

macOS groups storage into broad categories rather than showing every file in one list. Applications is one category; other categories cover different types of content. The chart is therefore best used to answer, “Is app storage a major reason my disk is full?” and, within the Applications view, “Which installed apps are the largest?” It is not a promise that every cache, helper component, installer, or system-managed file will appear under an app’s entry.

Use free space as the context

Check the available-space figure before judging the size of an app. A large application may be harmless when the Mac has ample free space, while a smaller collection of apps can matter when the remaining capacity is low. Record the free-space figure and the largest application entries before making changes; that gives you a baseline for checking whether a later cleanup actually helped.

Remember that system applications are excluded

Apple’s Applications category excludes system applications. Consequently, a system component that occupies space will not necessarily be listed with ordinary installed apps. Do not interpret the category as a complete accounting of all software on the Mac. It is a focused view of the applications Apple includes in that category.

A practical workflow for finding the biggest apps

1. Let the calculation finish

Storage totals can take time to appear, especially after installing or removing large software. Wait until the chart and category values settle before comparing entries. Reading the first numbers that appear can give you an incomplete picture.

2. Open Applications and identify the outliers

Look for the entries that are substantially larger than the rest. Focus first on apps you no longer use, duplicate tools, old versions, or software installed for a one-time project. The goal at this stage is identification, not immediate deletion.

3. Check what you still need

Before removing a large app, consider whether it contains local projects, downloaded media, plug-ins, templates, or other data that you still need. The Storage pane tells you how much space the app category is using; it does not by itself establish which personal files should be deleted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Make one change at a time

Remove or move a single clearly unnecessary item, then return to Storage and let macOS recalculate. A one-change-at-a-time approach makes it easier to identify what released space and reduces the chance of removing software you later discover you need.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

5. Recheck the chart

Apple says storage information updates automatically as you free space, and category totals can change. Reopen the Storage view after a cleanup and wait for the new totals. If the Applications number barely changes, the space may be in another category or in files that the category view does not attribute directly to the app.

What to do after you identify a large app

Remove software you no longer need

Use the app’s normal uninstall method when one is provided. Removing only an icon from a convenient location may not remove every related item, while deleting software that supports active projects can create avoidable problems. If you are uncertain, document the app name and its reported size first, then check whether you have files or accounts that depend on it.

Keep an app but reduce local content

Some applications become large because they store downloaded or cached content locally. If the app provides its own controls for clearing downloads or changing where content is stored, use those controls rather than deleting random files from the Library or system folders. The Storage category can reveal that an app is large, but it does not identify which internal files are safe to remove.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move personal files to external storage

Apple separately documents moving files to an external storage device as an optional way to free space. This is useful after you identify large personal files, project folders, or media, but it is not required to check application sizes and it does not replace the Applications view. Verify that a moved file opens from the new location before removing the original.

Understanding System Data when Applications is not the answer

System Data is a broad category

If Applications is not unusually large, inspect the other categories shown in Storage. Apple describes System Data as a general category for files that do not fit more specific categories. It can include system-managed material, and its size varies with the Mac’s current state.

Why System Data may change

System Data is not a fixed folder with a single, permanent contents list. macOS can recalculate the category as its state changes, so the number you see today may differ later without any single application being responsible. Treat it as an indicator that additional storage is being used outside the more specific categories, not as proof that one app has consumed that space.

What the Storage view lets you delete

Apple says the contents of System Data cannot be selected and deleted from that category entry. Do not expect a “delete all” action there. Investigate the specific files or app content you actually recognize, and avoid removing system-managed data merely because the category is large.

Troubleshooting when the numbers look wrong

The Applications category is missing

  • Confirm that you opened the Storage view rather than a general settings page.
  • Wait for macOS to finish calculating the chart.
  • Scroll through the category list; the Applications entry may be below the first visible items.
  • On an older release, use About This Mac > Storage instead of the Ventura-era System Settings path.

An app you expected is not listed

The Applications category excludes system applications, so a system-provided app may not appear there. The category also should not be treated as a complete inventory of every file associated with software. Check the category definition and the other storage groups before concluding that the app is absent or using no space.

The totals keep changing

Storage information updates automatically as space is freed, and Apple notes that categories can vary. Give the pane time to recalculate after an installation, deletion, restart, or transfer. Compare the figures only after the chart has settled.

Deleting an app did not free as much space as expected

The reported application size may not equal every file created by the app. Personal documents, downloaded content, caches, and system-managed material can be represented in other categories. Return to the complete Storage overview and see which category changed rather than assuming that the remaining space belongs to the app itself.

The Mac is nearly full even though Applications is modest

Use the chart to determine which non-application category is consuming the capacity. If System Data is prominent, remember that it is a broad, variable category and cannot be deleted directly from its entry. Concentrate on identifiable personal files or app-controlled downloads, and consider moving suitable files to external storage as Apple describes.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • It is category-based: the Storage pane groups files instead of exposing a universal, file-by-file list.
  • Applications is not all software: system applications are excluded.
  • Attribution is not always exact: related data can be counted elsewhere, especially when it is managed by macOS or stored as personal content.
  • Values are dynamic: totals and category sizes can change as the Mac’s current state changes.
  • System Data is not a cleanup shortcut: its contents cannot be selected and deleted from that category view.

These limitations do not make the tool unhelpful. They define the question it answers well: which included applications are taking the most reported space, and whether applications are a major part of the Mac’s storage usage.

A quick decision checklist

  • Identify whether the Mac is running Ventura 13 or later, or an earlier release.
  • Open the matching Storage view.
  • Note the available-space figure.
  • Open Applications and wait for its values to finish calculating.
  • Record the largest entries before removing anything.
  • Exclude system applications from your expectations because they are not included in this category.
  • Check other categories if Applications does not explain the missing space.
  • Treat System Data as a broad, variable category that cannot be deleted from its entry.
  • After a cleanup, return to Storage and allow macOS to update the totals.

Apple’s documented storage guidance

For Apple’s current navigation and category descriptions, see the Apple storage support article and the Mac User Guide page on storage. The exact appearance of the pane can differ by macOS version, but the version split remains the key to choosing the correct route.
