On your Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, choose View by apps, and select an app to inspect its battery use and background-usage control. If the app list does not explain the drain, switch to View by systems. Pixel 6 and later also include Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly.
Start with the built-in battery screen
You do not need a battery-monitoring app to identify which software is using power. Pixel’s Battery settings show a breakdown for the period represented by the chart, then let you inspect individual apps or system components. The labels below are the current Google-documented paths; wording can vary slightly with your Pixel model or software version.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery usage.
- Tap View by apps.
The resulting list is the starting point for finding an app associated with unusually high battery use. Tap an app’s name to open its detail page. Depending on the app and your software build, that page can show its usage and an Allow background usage control. Google documents this route in its Pixel battery-drain guidance.

Take a moment to identify what the chart is measuring. Battery usage is tied to the period shown on the screen, not an abstract lifetime score. If you just charged the phone, the list may represent only a short interval. After a longer period, it may include a mixture of screen time, background activity, calls, navigation, media, charging, and idle time. A list from one period is useful for that period; it is not automatically a permanent ranking of your apps.

For a fair comparison, look at the chart before changing settings and note when the phone was last fully charged. Also note whether you recently installed or updated software, set up the phone, or performed a factory reset. Those events can temporarily change what the chart records. Comparing two periods with similar use gives you a more useful signal than comparing a busy travel day with a mostly idle day.
Read the app list without jumping to the wrong conclusion
A high entry is a clue, not automatic proof that the app is defective. The page is a usage breakdown for the selected observation period. A navigation, video, camera, game, or messaging app can legitimately appear near the top when you have actively used it. Conversely, a background-heavy app may be important even when its percentage is modest. Use the list to decide what to investigate next, rather than treating the largest number as a diagnosis.
Check the observation period
The battery-use chart represents battery level since the last full charge. The percentages may not total exactly 100 percent because Google rounds the displayed values. Compare apps over the same chart period, and note whether the phone has recently been charged, restarted, updated, or set up. Google explains the chart and rounding in its Pixel battery-level help.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Rounding also means that small differences should not be overinterpreted. If two entries are close, treat them as broadly similar until you have a longer or more comparable observation period. The useful question is whether the same app repeatedly stands out under similar conditions, not whether one rounded value is one point higher than another.
Open an app’s detail page
Tap a listed app rather than stopping at the summary. Look for how much of its activity occurred while you were using it and whether the page offers Allow background usage. The available controls are app- and version-dependent, so do not assume every Pixel exposes identical switches. A background allowance change can affect notifications, synchronization, uploads, navigation, widgets, or other functions that rely on the app running when it is not on screen.
Ask what you expected the app to do during the period. If you streamed video for an hour, a high entry may match that intentional activity. If you barely opened an app yet it remains prominent, background activity becomes a more plausible line of inquiry. That distinction helps you avoid restricting an app that is simply doing the work you requested.
When “View by apps” does not explain the drain
Return to the Battery usage screen and choose View by systems. Pixel separates app consumption from system components, so this second view can reveal a pattern that is not attributable to one downloaded app. Compare the two views for the same period instead of reading only one category.
| Battery-usage view | What it helps answer | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| View by apps | Which installed apps account for the displayed battery use? | Tap an app to inspect its details and, where offered, its background-usage setting. |
| View by systems | Could a phone system component, rather than one app, explain the pattern? | Use it when no app stands out or when the app totals do not match your experience. |
System activity can reflect work the phone performs for connectivity, display, hardware, or core services. The screen is intended to show where power was recorded, not to identify a single root cause in every case. If both views look ordinary but the phone still loses charge unusually fast, continue with diagnostics and the timing checks below.
Use both views as a comparison, not two separate verdicts
Suppose an app appears high but the system view also shows substantial activity. That does not automatically mean the app is innocent or guilty. It means the recorded use is distributed across more than one category. Likewise, a low app percentage does not rule out a system-level issue that affects the whole phone. Record the period, compare the categories, and look for a pattern that persists rather than reacting to one screen capture.

Run Battery diagnostics on Pixel 6 and later
Google documents an additional diagnostic path for Pixel 6 and later:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery diagnostics.
- Choose Battery draining too quickly.
This is an extra troubleshooting route, not a prerequisite for viewing the app list. If you have an earlier Pixel, the standard Battery usage screen remains the relevant built-in method. Google’s eligibility and diagnostic instructions are in Fix issues with your Pixel phone battery.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the diagnostic option is not present, first check the model requirement and software wording. Do not assume the missing menu means the phone cannot show app usage; Battery usage and its app/system views are the primary route. Diagnostics supplement that information on eligible models.
What to change after you identify a likely culprit
Review background usage selectively
When an app’s detail page exposes Allow background usage, decide whether that app needs to work when you are not actively using it. Restricting background activity can reduce unattended work, but it can also delay notifications, pause synchronization, or interfere with functions you expect. Apply a change to the specific app that is behaving unexpectedly and then observe the phone over the next comparable usage period.
Make a note of the original setting before changing it. If a notification, upload, or synchronization task stops behaving as expected, you can restore the prior allowance and reassess. The setting is a troubleshooting choice, not a universal recommendation to block every app from running in the background.
Keep battery optimization enabled
Google recommends leaving battery optimization on. Optimization is designed to limit unnecessary background work while preserving normal operation. Turning it off globally removes a protection that helps the phone manage background activity. If one app needs an exception for a legitimate reason, treat that as a targeted decision rather than disabling optimization for everything.
Recommended Free Tools
Leaving optimization enabled also gives later comparisons a more consistent baseline. Changing optimization for many apps at once makes it difficult to tell which change affected battery life or app behavior.
Do not force-stop every high entry
Force stop is not available for every app, and Google warns that force-stopping some essential apps or services can prevent the phone from working correctly. A force stop is therefore a targeted troubleshooting action, not a routine response to any app near the top of the list. If you use it, choose only the app you are investigating, understand what function may stop, and check whether the behavior returns when the app is opened or used again. Google’s cautions appear in its battery-drain troubleshooting instructions.
Do not turn the battery list into a to-do list that requires stopping every item. System processes and frequently used apps can appear because the phone is doing normal work. The safer sequence is to inspect, change one relevant setting if appropriate, and then compare the result.

Account for updates, setup, and resets
A Pixel can use more power temporarily after a software update while it downloads and optimizes software. That short-term increase can make the current battery chart look worse than your normal pattern. A new setup or factory reset can also leave the phone optimizing for a few weeks before battery behavior settles. Google advises seeking help if unusual drain continues after a few days, rather than assuming every post-update change is permanent. See Google’s battery-life guidance for these timing qualifications.

When checking after an update or reset, record the date and compare a later period with similar use. A single immediately-after-update reading cannot distinguish temporary optimization work from a persistent app problem. If the same app remains unusually prominent once the phone has had time to finish its background work, inspect that app’s detail page and compare it with the system view.
The timing matters in both directions. A few hours of unusual drain immediately after an update may be temporary, while a pattern that remains after a few days deserves closer attention. After a new setup or factory reset, Google says optimization can take a few weeks; do not judge the settled pattern from the first day alone.
Pixel 10 and later: personalized battery summaries
Google documents a newer personalized battery-usage summary for Pixel 10 and later, including Pixel Fold. It requires the latest version of AI Core, so availability depends on both the model and installed software. Treat this summary as an optional aid in supported configurations, not as a replacement for the standard View by apps and View by systems screens. The model and software requirement are described in Google’s battery-level help.
Because the summary is model- and software-dependent, its absence on another Pixel is expected. Use the standard usage screen for a consistent procedure across models, and use the personalized summary only when the phone meets the documented Pixel 10-or-later and AI Core requirements.

Use the following sequence when you need more than a quick glance at the list.
- Capture the normal view. Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps and note the period shown by the chart.
- Separate active use from background suspicion. Open the highest relevant entries and inspect their detail pages. Consider whether the amount fits what you did on the phone.
- Check background controls. If Allow background usage is available, decide whether the app needs that permission for notifications, synchronization, location-related functions, or other expected behavior.
- Change one variable. If you restrict background usage, avoid changing several unrelated apps at once. A single change makes the next comparison easier to interpret.
- Compare system activity. Return to Battery usage and select View by systems if no app explains the loss or if the app list seems inconsistent with your experience.
- Use diagnostics when eligible. On Pixel 6 and later, open Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly and follow the on-screen assessment.
- Recheck after a comparable period. Compare another period with similar charging and usage conditions. Do not treat a rounded percentage from one short interval as a lasting trend.
Keep a simple comparison note
You do not need a separate monitoring tool. A short note can include the last full-charge time, the top app entries, whether you changed background usage, and whether the phone had just updated or been reset. On the next comparable period, check whether the same app remains high and whether the system view changed. This makes the built-in screen more useful without adding another source of battery activity.
Common patterns and the right next step
One app is high and you used it heavily
Keep the context in view. A high percentage can simply reflect screen time or intensive work you intentionally performed. Inspect the detail page, but do not restrict background activity solely because the app appears first.
One app is high even though you barely opened it
Inspect its available background-usage control and consider a targeted restriction if the app does not need unattended work. Then compare a later period. Keep in mind that changing background allowance can alter notifications and synchronization.

Several apps are high
Look for what the entries have in common and compare them with your actual use. Several actively used apps can all be legitimate contributors. If no individual app explains the experience, switch to View by systems rather than restricting every app in succession.
No app is clearly responsible
Switch to View by systems. The system view is specifically useful when the app list does not explain the pattern. If the drain began immediately after an update, new setup, or factory reset, allow for the temporary optimization period before judging the result.
The percentages do not add to 100%
That is expected when displayed values are rounded. Use the chart’s period and the relative pattern as context instead of trying to reconcile the list to an exact total.
The phone still drains unusually after several days
Repeat the app-and-system comparison, use Battery diagnostics if your Pixel is 6 or later, and seek Google support when the unusual drain persists beyond the short post-update or post-setup window. Avoid force-stopping essential services as a blanket fix.
What this check can and cannot tell you
- It can show: a period-based breakdown of recorded battery use, separate app and system views, and app-level settings that may control background activity.
- It cannot prove by itself: that the largest percentage is the sole cause of every battery complaint, that an app is malfunctioning, or that restricting an app will leave all of its features unchanged.
- It can guide a next step: compare context, inspect the app, check system activity, and use the Pixel’s built-in diagnostics when supported.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to see which Pixel apps use battery?
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps. Tap an app for its detail page and inspect any available background-usage control.
Why can’t I find one app that explains the drain?
Use View by systems. Battery use can be recorded under system components rather than one downloaded app. Also check whether the chart covers a short or unusual period, such as immediately after an update or reset.
Should I turn off background usage for the top app?
Not automatically. First decide whether the app was doing work you requested. If it was unexpectedly active in the background, a targeted restriction may help, but it can affect notifications, synchronization, uploads, navigation, widgets, or similar functions.
Does every Pixel have Battery diagnostics?
Google documents the Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly path for Pixel 6 and later. Earlier models can still use the standard Battery usage app and system views.
Why don’t the percentages total exactly 100 percent?
Google says the displayed values are rounded. Use them as a comparison for the chart’s period rather than as exact measurements that must sum perfectly.
Best Value
Is extra drain after an update always a bad app?
No. Google says a Pixel may use more power temporarily while it downloads and optimizes software after an update. After a new setup or factory reset, optimization can take a few weeks. If unusual drain remains after a few days, continue troubleshooting and seek help as needed.
Can I disable battery optimization for everything?
Google recommends leaving battery optimization enabled. If a specific app has a legitimate need for different treatment, make that a targeted decision and understand the behavior you may change.
What is the Pixel 10 personalized summary?
Pixel 10 and later, including Pixel Fold, can show a personalized battery-usage summary when the latest AI Core is installed. It is optional and model- and software-dependent; the standard app and system views remain the general method.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check which apps are draining my Pixel battery?
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage, tap View by apps, and select an app to inspect its usage and any Allow background usage control.
What should I do if the app list does not explain the drain?
Return to Battery usage and choose View by systems. Compare the app and system views for the same chart period.
Which Pixels include Battery diagnostics?
Google documents Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly for Pixel 6 and later.
Should I force-stop every app with a high percentage?
No. Force stop is unavailable for some apps, and force-stopping essential apps or services can affect how the phone works. Use it only as a targeted troubleshooting step.

Why did battery life get worse after an update or reset?
Google says temporary extra drain can occur while software downloads and optimizes after an update. After a new setup or factory reset, optimization may take a few weeks.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps as your starting point, inspect suspicious entries, and compare with View by systems when no app explains the pattern. On Pixel 6 and later, add Battery diagnostics, keep optimization enabled, and judge changes over comparable periods rather than one rounded percentage.
