To see what may monitor a work computer, check three layers: connected work accounts, device-management profiles, and recording or diagnostic permissions. On Windows, start with Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and Settings > Privacy & security > App diagnostics. On a Mac, inspect System Settings > General > Device Management and System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. These screens reveal some local relationships and permissions, but they cannot prove that no employer-side monitoring exists. Cloud applications, network systems, managed accounts and centrally configured security tools can create records that are not visible in local settings. The reliable next step is to request your employer’s monitoring notice and ask exactly what is collected, why, who can access it and how long it is retained.
What these checks can—and cannot—show
A work computer can be connected to an organisation in more than one way. A work account may register the device in the organisation’s directory. A management service may then apply settings, install or remove applications, enforce security rules and collect inventory. A separate application may record screen activity, capture usage events or inspect files. Network and cloud services can also log activity without displaying a conspicuous monitoring app on the computer.

That is why a process list, profile page or permission screen is evidence about one mechanism, not a complete audit. Finding a management profile does not prove that someone is watching your screen. Finding no recording permission does not prove that the employer has no access to activity records. The most useful result is a map of what is locally visible, followed by a written explanation from the employer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThree kinds of evidence
- Relationship evidence: a connected work account, registered device or management profile shows that the computer is associated with an organisation.
- Permission evidence: a screen-recording, microphone, camera, accessibility or broad-file-access permission shows that a listed app or managed policy has a particular capability.
- Collection evidence: a policy, privacy notice or administrator statement explains what data is actually collected, the purpose, access rules and retention period.
Only the third category can answer the employer-specific questions that matter most. Local settings can be changed by operating-system updates, hidden by administrator controls or limited to a narrow class of data.

Check a Windows computer
1. Review work and school connections
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Open Access work or school.
- Expand each listed connection and read the status, organisation name and available management information.
Adding a work or school account can register the device in the organisation’s directory. The directory may show the device name, whether it is enabled, and the operating system and version. Registration establishes an account relationship; it does not, by itself, demonstrate screen recording or keystroke logging.
If the connection indicates that the organisation can manage the device, the scope is broader. Device management can apply configuration settings and manage applications. It may also enforce security requirements or make inventory information available to administrators. The exact data set depends on how the device was enrolled, who owns it and which policies were assigned.
Do not remove a work connection merely to make the entry disappear. Removing it can break sign-in, security software, access to company files or required applications. Ask the IT team what the connection does and what would stop working before changing it.
2. Inspect App diagnostics, but treat it as a narrow control
- Return to Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open App diagnostics.
- Review the permission state and any per-app entries that Windows displays.
Windows describes App diagnostics as permission for an app to obtain information about other running apps. Depending on the operating-system version and the data exposed, this can include an app’s name and package name, the account under which it runs, memory use and similar process-level details.
This page is not a complete inventory of monitoring software. Windows does not list traditional desktop applications in the per-app controls, and desktop applications are not governed by this particular permission. A clean or short list therefore cannot establish that no desktop monitoring tool is installed, nor can it rule out monitoring performed by a managed service or network system.
3. Separate Windows diagnostic data from employer monitoring
Windows diagnostic data is a different issue from an employer’s own monitoring. Microsoft describes diagnostic data that can include information about device settings, applications and drivers. Optional crash reporting can include memory state; in some circumstances, that memory may contain portions of a file that was open when the failure occurred.

The recipient and purpose matter. Windows diagnostic information may be handled by the operating-system provider under its own settings and policies. An employer may separately collect device inventory, application events, security telemetry or work-service activity. Do not assume that an employer automatically receives every category of operating-system diagnostic data, and do not assume that changing a Windows diagnostic setting changes an employer’s collection practices.
4. Determine whether ownership and enrollment change what is visible
Guidance for Microsoft’s management service explains that the information visible to an organisation depends on enrollment and device ownership. A company-owned, fully managed computer can expose a different inventory and policy set from a personally owned computer enrolled for work. A work account used only to sign in is another situation again.
| Windows situation | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Work account listed under Access work or school | The device or account has an organisational relationship; directory details may be available. | That the screen is being recorded or that a person is watching. |
| Device-management connection shown | The organisation may apply settings and manage applications, subject to enrollment and policy. | The exact monitoring features enabled or the retention period. |
| App diagnostics permission enabled | A permitted app may read narrow process-level information about running apps. | That all applications are visible or that screen, keystroke or network data is collected. |
| No obvious local entry | Nothing was found in the specific pages checked. | That cloud, network, account or centrally configured logging is absent. |
Check a Mac
1. Inspect Device Management and configuration profiles
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select General.
- Open Device Management.
- Read every listed configuration profile, including its organisation name, description and removal status.
Profiles can configure security, network access, certificates, accounts and privacy permissions. If a profile cannot be removed, macOS may be managed; some profiles can be removed only by an administrator. A non-removable profile is therefore a strong sign of organisational control, but it still does not identify every function the organisation has enabled.
Do not delete a work profile before speaking with the administrator. Removal can disable required certificates, virtual private network access, security controls, email or other work services. On a personal Mac, ask whether the employer can provide app-only access or a separate work profile instead of full device enrollment.
2. Look for the supervision indicator
Apple documents a clear indicator at the top of the Device Management window when a Mac is supervised. The message states that the Mac is supervised and managed by the organisation, followed by the organisation’s name. Supervision confirms that the computer is under organisational management. It does not reveal whether the organisation has enabled screen capture, file inspection, application tracking or any other specific feature.

3. Review Screen & System Audio Recording
- Open System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Open Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Review each listed app or website and whether recording access is enabled.
This list covers one permission surface: the ability of a listed item to record the screen and system audio. macOS lets the user enable or disable access for each listed item, although a management profile may control the setting.

A blank list or a disabled entry is not proof that no monitoring occurs. Other collection methods include application usage records, files synced to work services, network logs, account activity and security telemetry. Conversely, a listed screen-recording permission proves capability, not that recording is continuous, that recordings are stored, or that a human is viewing them.
4. Understand managed privacy permissions
Apple’s management documentation describes privacy-permission payloads for screen recording, camera, microphone, Accessibility and broad file access. A device-management service can assign these settings. Their practical effect depends on whether the Mac is enrolled and how the organisation configured the policy.
Accessibility access deserves particular care: it can allow an app to interact with other applications or control aspects of the interface. That does not automatically mean the app is logging every keystroke, but it is a reason to identify the app and ask the administrator what function it serves. The same principle applies to camera, microphone and broad file-access entries.

Compare the evidence before drawing a conclusion
Use the following sequence rather than treating one setting as a verdict.
- Identify ownership. Is the computer supplied by the employer, personally owned, or mixed—for example, a personal computer enrolled for work?
- Identify enrollment. Is there only a sign-in account, or is the entire device registered with a management service?
- List visible capabilities. Note profiles, recording permissions, Accessibility access, camera or microphone permissions and security applications without disabling anything.
- Separate local and remote collection. Mark which findings are on the computer and which could be generated by a work application, cloud service, gateway or other central system.
- Request the policy. Compare the written notice with the settings you observed and ask about any mismatch.
Keep a factual record of what you saw: the operating-system version, the exact menu path, profile names, permission states and date checked. Avoid recording or copying confidential company information while doing so. A neutral inventory helps IT answer specific questions and prevents assumptions based on an unfamiliar process name.
Questions to ask your employer or IT team
Request the current monitoring notice, acceptable-use policy or privacy statement. Ask for plain-language answers to each of these points:

- What information is collected? Ask separately about device inventory, application names and usage, websites, network connections, files, screenshots, screen recordings, audio, camera images, keystrokes and other input events.
- When does collection occur? Is it continuous, periodic, triggered by a security event, limited to work applications, or active only during working hours?
- Which devices are covered? Does the policy distinguish company-owned computers, personally owned computers and phones?
- Who can access the records? Ask whether access is limited to IT, security, managers, human-resources staff, an outside service provider or investigators.
- Why is each category collected? A stated security, compliance, support or productivity purpose should be specific enough to understand.
- How long is data retained? Ask for normal retention, deletion triggers, backup retention and the treatment of records created during an investigation.
- Is personal-device enrollment optional? If not, ask what alternatives exist, such as browser-only access, an application-only work profile or a company-provided computer.
- How are personal and work data separated? Clarify whether administrators can inspect personal files, accounts, browsing, local backups or other users on the same device.
- What notice is provided? Ask where changes to monitoring settings or policy will be announced.
The answers vary by employer and jurisdiction. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office cautions that “Device activity monitoring is likely to capture excessive amounts of workers’ personal information.” That is useful privacy context, not a universal legal conclusion. Local employment, data-protection and sector rules may impose additional requirements.

A work account appears, but no management profile is obvious
This usually indicates an account or directory relationship, not proof of active recording. Ask whether the account is used only for authentication or whether a separate management service is installed. Check whether the device is described as registered, managed or compliant, and ask what inventory is visible to administrators.
The device is marked managed or supervised
Assume that the organisation can enforce settings and manage applications within the policy’s scope. Do not infer that every possible monitoring feature is enabled. Request the policy and ask which data sources are active on this particular device.
An app has screen-recording or Accessibility access
Record the app’s name and the permission, then ask what business function requires it. A permission is a capability; it does not disclose recording frequency, storage location, reviewer access or retention. Do not revoke a work-required permission until you understand the effect.
No monitoring app or permission is visible
Treat this as an incomplete result. Work applications can log actions to their own services, network gateways can record connections, and administrators can configure collection centrally. Ask for the employer’s data map rather than relying on the absence of a local icon.
The policy and the computer appear inconsistent
Give IT the exact policy wording and the exact setting you observed. A profile may be left over from an older enrollment, a policy may apply only to certain users, or the documentation may not describe a newly changed configuration. Ask which statement governs and request an updated notice if necessary.

Personal computers used for work
Adding a work account to a personal computer can range from a limited sign-in arrangement to full device enrollment. Before accepting enrollment, ask what the organisation can see and manage, whether it can install applications, and how it handles personal accounts and files.
Prefer the least-invasive arrangement that still meets the employer’s security requirements. Possible alternatives include using a company-provided computer, accessing work through a browser, or using a separate work profile. The available options depend on the employer’s systems; do not assume that a particular alternative is offered.
Keep personal and work activity separate where policy permits. Use distinct browser profiles or operating-system accounts, avoid saving personal passwords in a work-managed profile, and do not copy confidential work data into personal storage. Separation reduces accidental mixing, but it does not override a device-wide management policy.
When menu names do not match
Windows and macOS change labels and layouts between releases. If a path differs, use the Settings or System Settings search field for terms such as Access work or school, App diagnostics, Device Management or Screen & System Audio Recording. Confirm the operating-system version before comparing instructions from another release.
On a managed computer, an administrator may hide a setting, lock it, or provide a company-specific management panel. A missing menu can therefore mean either that the feature is unavailable on that version or that policy restricts access. Ask IT which control is authoritative instead of attempting to work around it.
What not to do
- Do not uninstall security or management software simply because its name is unfamiliar.
- Do not delete a profile, disconnect a work account or revoke permissions before checking the effect on access and compliance.
- Do not attempt to bypass, disable or evade employer controls on a work computer.
- Do not treat a task manager entry, browser extension or permission list as proof of what a person is currently watching.
- Do not use a personal device for sensitive work until you understand enrollment, separation and retention terms.
If you believe monitoring violates a policy or local law, preserve the written notice and ask an appropriate internal privacy, human-resources or compliance contact for clarification. For legal advice, consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
The Bottom Line
Use the account, management and permission checks to identify visible control points, then obtain the employer’s written explanation of collection, access and retention. A managed device or recording permission shows that a capability exists; neither that finding nor an empty settings page can, by itself, prove the full extent of monitoring.
