How to Check Which Apps and Permissions Can Access Sensitive Data on a Galaxy Phone

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Galaxy phone, open Settings and go to Security and privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Select a permission such as Camera, Microphone, Location, Contacts, or Photos and videos to see the apps that have that access and change each app’s setting. If your menus use different wording, search Settings for Permission manager.

That screen answers which apps are allowed to access a type of data. To find out which apps used a permission recently, use Privacy Dashboard or Permissions used in last 24 hours, depending on your Galaxy’s Android and One UI versions. These are different checks: a permission grant is not a complete history of use.

Start with the question you need to answer

There are four useful views of app access on a Galaxy phone. Choosing the right one prevents a common mistake: treating an allowed permission as proof that an app is using the sensor now, or treating a short activity history as a complete record.

Device-wide camera or microphone controls Temporarily blocking a sensor across apps A broad block can interrupt apps that need that sensor

Samsung’s Security and privacy settings guide and Google’s Android permission guide describe these controls. Names and locations can differ by model, Android release, One UI version, carrier, and region.

No additional privacy or “permission cleaner” app is required for this audit. The relevant controls are built into Galaxy and Android Settings. A third-party utility cannot reveal a more authoritative grant than the operating system itself, and installing one can create another app whose permissions you must evaluate.

Use Permission manager to see every app with a sensitive-data grant

Open the manager

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security and privacy, then Privacy.
  3. Tap Permission manager.

On some Galaxy software, Samsung places the same function under Settings > Apps, followed by the three-dot or menu button and a permissions-related option. If neither route matches your phone, use the Settings search field and enter Permission manager. Samsung documents both the newer Security and privacy route and the alternative Apps-menu route in its Galaxy app-permission instructions.

Search is particularly useful after a major Android or One UI update. The feature may still exist even when Samsung has moved it, combined Privacy screens, or changed the label. Search for the exact phrase first rather than assuming that a missing menu means the phone cannot manage permissions.

Choose a permission category

Permission manager is organized by the kind of access, rather than by app. Tap the category that matches the question you are asking:

  • Camera shows apps that can use the camera.
  • Microphone shows apps that can record audio.
  • Location shows apps that can obtain location information.
  • Contacts shows apps that can read or use contacts.
  • Photos and videos shows apps with access to that media.

Your list can contain additional categories. The available categories and wording depend on Android and One UI. If you are auditing a particular kind of information, start with that category instead of opening every app at random. For example, the Camera list is the fastest way to answer “which apps can use my camera?” while the Location list answers a different question about location access.

Review the categories separately. An app that needs Contacts may not need Microphone, and an app that needs a photo picker may not need unrestricted access to all of your media. The category view makes those distinctions visible without requiring you to remember every installed app.

Inspect an app and change its choice

Tap an app in the category list. The choices depend on the permission. Location commonly offers Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. Other permissions may present a smaller set of choices, such as allowing access only while the app is in use or denying it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the least access that still supports the app’s purpose. For example, an app that needs your position only while its map screen is open may not need all-the-time location access. A voice recorder cannot record when microphone access is denied, and a camera-based feature cannot work when camera access is denied. Android and Samsung warn that denying a permission can disable a function; an app may stop showing nearby devices, attaching a photo, recording audio, or providing a location-dependent feature until access is restored.

When an app offers Ask every time, you get a decision at the moment the feature requests access instead of granting it permanently. That can be useful for an app you use occasionally, although repeated prompts can make the feature less convenient. “Allow only while using the app” is a narrower alternative when it is offered.

After changing a setting, return to the category list to confirm that the app moved to the expected group. Then test only the feature that needed the permission. If an app later asks again, that is normal: the app is requesting access that is currently denied or restricted. Do not automatically approve every prompt; use the request as a chance to reassess whether the feature is worth the access.

Review one app without scanning an entire category

If you already know which app concerns you, open Settings > Apps, select the app, and tap Permissions. The page lists permissions that are allowed, denied, or available to ask for. Tap a permission to change it using the choices offered by your software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This route is useful when troubleshooting one app, but it is slower for an audit because it requires repeating the process app by app. Permission manager is the more efficient view when your question is, “Which apps can access my microphone?” or “Which apps have location permission?” The per-app page is better when an app has just displayed a request, stopped working after a change, or needs a complete review of its own settings.

Use both views when necessary. Permission manager gives you the complete set of apps in one category; the app page gives you the complete set of categories for one app. They should describe the same current grant, although the wording and grouping can differ slightly between Galaxy software versions.

Find out which apps used permissions recently

Open Privacy Dashboard or permission-use history

Search Settings for Privacy Dashboard. On some Galaxy devices the equivalent entry is labelled Permissions used in last 24 hours. Open it and select a permission category to see recent access activity and the apps associated with it.

Google’s Privacy Dashboard documentation specifies a seven-day view on Android 13 and a 24-hour view on Android 12. A Galaxy running another Android or One UI version may use different labels or a different period. Do not interpret an empty or short history as proof that an app has never accessed data: it only covers the period and categories the device records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dashboard is most useful after you notice something unexpected, such as a microphone indicator or a location request. Open the relevant category and note the app name and time shown, then open that app’s Permissions page to decide whether to narrow or revoke the grant. A dashboard entry does not itself change access.

Understand what this view adds

Permission manager tells you what an app is permitted to do now. Privacy Dashboard tells you which apps used a permission during the available recent window. Checking both gives a more complete answer:

  • An app can appear in Permission manager even when it has not used the permission recently.
  • An app can appear in recent-use history because it exercised a permission that is still allowed.
  • A recent-use list does not replace the permission list, because its retention period is limited.
  • An app absent from the recent list may simply have been inactive during the recorded period, or the activity may be outside the window your software keeps.

Think of the dashboard as a recent-activity check, not an exportable lifetime log. If you need to monitor a permission over time, make your own notes when you review it; the built-in history is not presented as unlimited storage.

Use the green indicator to identify current camera or microphone access

When an app is using the camera or microphone, Galaxy software can display a green dot at the top of the screen. Samsung explains that the indicator is a real-time signal; pull down the notification panel and tap the indicator to identify the app currently using either sensor. The regional Samsung explanation is available at Know what the green dot at the top of your screen means.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dot answers “what is using a camera or microphone right now?” It does not tell you which apps have permission in general, and it does not provide a long-term activity log. Use Permission manager for grants and Privacy Dashboard for the recent history that your software retains. If the dot appears unexpectedly, identify the current app from the indicator, close or stop the app if appropriate, and then review its permission page.

Remember that a green dot can be expected while you are taking a photo, recording a voice message, making a video call, or using another feature that needs a sensor. The useful response is to identify the app rather than assume that every indicator means misuse.

Temporarily block camera or microphone access for every app

For a broad, immediate block, use the device-wide Camera access and Microphone access controls when your Galaxy software provides them. These are separate controls from individual app grants. Turning one off prevents apps from using that sensor until you turn it back on, so camera viewfinders, video calls, voice recording, and similar functions can fail while the switch is disabled.

Look in Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy for the camera and microphone controls, or search Settings for Camera access or Microphone access. The exact location and availability depend on Android and One UI. Google’s permission guidance covers the global switches as well as per-app controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a global switch when you need a temporary, device-wide pause, not as a substitute for cleaning up individual grants. Turning the switch back on restores the possibility of access for every app that still has its individual permission. If one app should remain blocked, change that app’s grant as well.

A practical Galaxy privacy audit

Use this sequence when you want to check a phone rather than investigate one isolated request.

  1. Check current grants. Open Permission manager and review Camera, Microphone, Location, Contacts, and Photos and videos. Record apps whose access no longer matches how you use them.
  2. Reduce each grant. Open the app from the category and select a narrower option, such as while-in-use access, Ask every time, or Don’t allow, where offered.
  3. Check recent activity. Open Privacy Dashboard or the recent-permission screen and inspect the available history window for unexpected camera, microphone, location, or other access.
  4. Investigate live use. If the green dot appears, tap it from the notification panel to identify the app using the camera or microphone at that moment.
  5. Apply an emergency block. If you need no camera or microphone access temporarily, turn off the corresponding device-wide switch, remembering that it affects every app.
  6. Recheck after an update. Android and One UI updates can rename menus or alter available choices, so use Settings search if a documented path no longer appears.

Work category by category and pause after each change. This makes it clear which permission caused a feature to stop working and avoids the common pitfall of restoring every permission simply because one function failed.

What permission screens do not prove

A permission screen describes an app’s device-access rights. It does not, by itself, establish whether information is transmitted to a server, retained, combined with other data, or shared with another party. Permission state is therefore an important control, not a complete privacy assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, an app may have location permission but use it only at certain times, or it may send information after receiving it. Conversely, an app may not need a sensitive permission because a feature uses a system picker or another mechanism. The Settings screen cannot explain all of those implementation details.

Google’s location-data guidance notes that a developer data-safety disclosure may be available only when both the app store and device support those labels. Developers are responsible for the accuracy of their stated practices and for keeping them updated. Treat such disclosures as additional information rather than as a replacement for reviewing permissions and recent use.

Troubleshooting differences between Galaxy phones

The menu path is missing

Search Settings for Permission manager, Privacy Dashboard, Camera access, or Microphone access. Samsung’s instructions show more than one route, and labels can change by model, region, carrier, Android version, and One UI version.

An expected permission is not listed

Open the app’s own Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions page. Android may group or rename permissions differently from the category screen, and some permissions are only requested when an app reaches the relevant feature. An app that has never requested a category may not appear where you expect until its feature is used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing access breaks a feature

Return to the app’s Permissions page and restore the specific permission, preferably using the narrowest option that supports the feature. Denying access can affect app operation, so test the function after each change instead of re-enabling every permission at once.

The recent-use screen does not show older activity

That is expected. Google’s documented windows are seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12; other releases may differ. Permission manager remains the place to inspect the current grant even when the historical window has expired.

The green dot disappears before you can identify the app

The indicator reflects current sensor use. Open the notification panel while it is visible and tap it to identify the app. If it has already disappeared, review recent permission activity and the app permissions instead; the dot is not designed to preserve a history after the use ends.

Key distinction: permission, recent use, and current use

Use the three signals for three different questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “Could this app access it?” Check Permission manager or the app’s Permissions page.
  • “Did it access it recently?” Check Privacy Dashboard or permission-use history within the device’s available window.
  • “Is an app using the camera or microphone right now?” Look for the green dot and tap it to identify the current app.

That distinction keeps the audit accurate without assuming that a grant is an activity record or that a short history covers the phone’s entire lifetime.

Frequently asked questions

Is Permission manager the same as Privacy Dashboard?

No. Permission manager lists current grants by permission type. Privacy Dashboard or permission-use history lists recent activity within a limited window. Use both when you need to know what an app could do and what it actually did recently.

Can I see every app that has ever used my microphone?

No. The built-in history is limited. Google documents seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12, while other Galaxy software may use a different period. The green indicator identifies current use, not lifetime use.

What is the quickest way to block all camera access?

Use the device-wide Camera access switch in the Privacy settings when your software provides it. This blocks every app until you turn it on again and can interrupt camera-based features. Use the equivalent Microphone access switch for audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an app stop working if I deny a permission?

It can. Samsung and Google warn that denying access may disable the feature that needs it. Restore the specific permission, or choose a narrower option such as while using the app, rather than granting every permission again.

Why does an app ask for a permission again after I denied it?

The app is requesting access that is currently denied or restricted. You can approve it for that use, choose a narrower setting if offered, or continue without the feature.

Does an allowed location permission prove that my location is being shared?

No. It shows device access rights, not whether data is transmitted, retained, or shared. Review the app’s stated data practices separately, remembering that availability and accuracy of developer disclosures can vary.

Do I need a paid security app to check Galaxy permissions?

No. Galaxy and Android Settings provide Permission manager, per-app permission pages, recent-use history, the green sensor indicator, and supported global camera and microphone switches. No physical product or paid utility is necessary for this task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are instructions different on two Galaxy phones?

Samsung changes labels and paths by model, Android release, One UI version, carrier, and region. Try Settings search for the feature name, and check both the Security and privacy route and the Apps-menu route when necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to see which apps can use my camera?

Open Settings, search for Permission manager, choose Camera, and review the listed apps. Tap an app to change its access.

How can I tell whether an app used a permission recently?

Open Privacy Dashboard or Permissions used in last 24 hours and select the permission category. The history window depends on Android and One UI; Android 13 documents seven days and Android 12 documents 24 hours.

What does the green dot on a Galaxy screen mean?

It signals current camera or microphone use. Pull down the notification panel and tap the indicator to identify the app using the sensor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I block the microphone for every app temporarily?

If your Galaxy provides it, turn off the device-wide Microphone access switch under Privacy. This affects every app until you turn it back on.

Does revoking a permission delete an app’s data?

No. Revoking a permission changes the app’s ability to access that device resource. It does not by itself establish whether previously collected data was transmitted, retained, or shared.

The Bottom Line

Use Permission manager to see which apps have access, Privacy Dashboard to check recent activity, and the Galaxy green indicator to identify current camera or microphone use. When menus differ, search Settings for the feature name. Make the narrowest change that still lets an app work, and remember that permission settings are a control over device access—not a complete record of an app’s data handling.
