To see what is taking up space on a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings > Battery and device care > Storage (or Settings > Device care > Storage on some versions) to review categories and files. For app-by-app usage, open Settings > Apps, select an app, and tap Storage. The first view helps locate large types of content; the second shows the space used by individual apps.
Check storage by category and inspect files
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery and device care or Device care, depending on your phone’s software.
- Tap Storage to review used and available space and the categories shown.
- Tap a category such as Images, Videos, Audio files, or Documents to inspect its contents.
This screen organizes storage by content type; it is not necessarily a ranked list of apps. Depending on the model and software, storage management may also show trash, unused apps, duplicate files, or large files. Review what each item contains before deleting anything. Samsung notes that menus and layouts vary by model and software version (Samsung Canada: Device care; Samsung Canada: managing files and storage).

Find how much space individual apps use
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Choose an app from the list, or use search to find it.
- Tap Storage and check the app’s displayed space, including data and cache details where shown.
- Repeat for other likely space users and compare the figures.
Samsung documents this as a per-app check, so the exact interface may not provide one universal list ranked from largest app to smallest. Checking the apps you suspect are large is the reliable route described in Samsung’s app-management guidance (Samsung Canada: managing apps).

“Other” does not necessarily mean personal files you can browse and delete as a group. Samsung says it can include data from installed apps, such as system files, cached data, and temporary files that do not fit the other categories. Its UK guidance, updated 4 August 2026, says this category cannot be deleted directly. To investigate, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage and review that app’s cache or data. Samsung cautions that removing files from a frequently used app can make it run more slowly (Samsung UK: Other storage).

On some software versions, an information icon beside Apps in Storage may open a setting that distinguishes My Files from Apps/Other. This control is version-dependent and may not appear on your phone.
Choose cleanup actions carefully
Clear cache
Cache is temporary data an app may rebuild. Clearing it is the narrower cleanup action; the app may need to recreate cached content afterward.

Clear data
Clear data is not the same as clearing cache. Samsung says it resets the selected app to its defaults and removes personal settings or data saved in that app. Some system apps do not allow data clearing. Before using it, confirm what the app stores locally and whether important content is synced or backed up (Samsung Canada: managing apps; Samsung Canada: clearing app cache and data).

Review files before deleting or moving them
Trash or recycle-bin contents, duplicates, and large files can be worth reviewing after you identify a space-consuming category. Delete only items you recognize and no longer need. Moving files to an SD card is another possible follow-up on models that support one; it is not needed to check current usage, and support depends on the exact phone model (Samsung UK: freeing storage space).

Why your menus may look different
Samsung’s current support pages use Battery and device care for the hub, while some software versions use Device care. Country, model, carrier, and software version can affect labels and available controls. If a listed path is missing, look in Settings for “Storage,” “Device care,” or the app’s own entry under Apps. Samsung explicitly warns that menu names, settings, and layouts may vary by model and software version (Samsung Canada: Device care).
