How to Check Whether Your XRP Ledger Account or Transaction Was Affected by a Ledger Bug

Use a validated-ledger record, not a wallet screen or an unvalidated API response. Search the account with an XRPL explorer or the account_tx method, then inspect each transaction by hash. Confirm validated: true, read meta.TransactionResult, and examine meta.AffectedNodes for the actual ledger changes. If a record is missing, first verify that the server searched the required ledger range; limited-history servers can make an event appear absent.

This process can show what the public XRP Ledger recorded. It cannot, by itself, prove that a particular software defect affected your account. You must also match the observed evidence to the bug report’s affected software, ledger range, and failure mode.

What you can prove from the XRP Ledger

An XRP Ledger account has a public transaction history. The account_tx method returns validated transactions involving an account, including activity that affected the account even when the account was not the transaction’s sender. A transaction lookup by hash provides the final result and metadata for that specific transaction.

The decisive distinction is validation. A transaction proposal, a wallet’s local status, or an API response without validation is not final. A validated ledger version is immutable: once the transaction is included there, its recorded result and metadata are the authoritative public record for that ledger version.

  • Validated: The transaction is included in a validated ledger and its metadata describes final ledger changes.
  • Unvalidated or provisional: The transaction may still be rejected, replaced, or changed before consensus.
  • Absent from one query: This may indicate a history-coverage problem rather than proof that the transaction never existed.
  • Local database discrepancy: A node can have incorrect or incomplete SQLite transaction data while the validated public ledger remains correct.

The XRP Ledger Foundation’s documentation summarizes the standard: to know what a transaction did, look up its outcome when it appears in a validated ledger version. Apply that rule to every claim about a payment, trust line, offer, account setting, or suspected bug.

Information to collect before checking

Gather identifiers that let you reproduce the event without exposing secrets. Public ledger inspection never requires a private key, seed phrase, signing secret, or wallet password.

  • The exact XRPL account address, beginning with r.
  • The transaction hash, if the wallet, exchange, or support ticket provides one.
  • An approximate UTC date and time, or a suspected ledger index.
  • The name or identifier of the reported bug, advisory, software package, or incident.
  • The wallet, node, or client-library version involved.
  • Whether the issue concerns a wallet application, a server’s local database, a client dependency, or consensus and ledger state.

Do not paste secret material into an explorer, API request, support chat, or diagnostic script. If a software incident may have exposed keys, record the installed version and the time it was used, but keep the keys themselves private.

Step 1: Retrieve the account’s transaction history

Using an explorer

Open an XRPL explorer, enter the account address, and select the transaction-history view. Check the displayed ledger index for each transaction and open individual records rather than relying only on a summary balance. Explorers are convenient, but they may use their own indexing service and may not retain every historical ledger.

Using account_tx

Send an account_tx request to an XRPL API server. The essential parameters are the account address and, when investigating a bounded period, ledger_index_min and ledger_index_max. Set a reasonable limit; the server can return fewer records than requested.

{
  "method": "account_tx",
  "params": [{
    "account": "rExampleAccountAddress",
    "ledger_index_min": 80000000,
    "ledger_index_max": 80010000,
    "limit": 100,
    "forward": true
  }]
}

The account address in this example is illustrative. Replace it with the public address you are investigating and choose ledger bounds that cover the suspected date. The response reports the actual ledger_index_min and ledger_index_max searched. Record those values; they are as important as the transaction list.

Follow pagination

When the response includes a marker, request the next page with the same account and ledger bounds plus that marker. Continue until the marker is absent or the date and ledger range of interest are covered. Stopping after the first page can hide the relevant event.

  }]
}

Use the marker exactly as returned by the server. Do not invent a ledger number or sequence value. Save each page’s raw response so you can show which range was searched if two services later disagree.

Step 2: Identify the account’s role in each suspicious transaction

Account history is not limited to payments the account sent. Review whether the address was the sender, destination, issuer, offer owner, signer, or another affected participant. A transaction can alter an account’s balance or settings through a relationship recorded in ledger metadata even when the account does not appear in the transaction’s obvious payment fields.

For each candidate record, note the transaction hash, transaction type, validated ledger index, ledger hash if displayed, source account, destination or issuer, amount fields, fee, and timestamp. Keep the hash as the primary identity. Dates shown by wallets can be localized or rounded; ledger index and hash provide a more reliable cross-service match.

Step 3: Look up the transaction by hash and confirm finality

Use the transaction’s hash with the XRPL transaction lookup method or an explorer’s hash search. The response should explicitly contain validated: true. If it says false, is missing the field, or identifies a current ledger rather than a validated ledger, treat the result as provisional and do not use it to conclude that funds moved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
{
  "method": "tx",
  "params": [{
    "transaction": "TRANSACTION_HASH"
  }]
}

The hash shown here is a variable inside a code example, not a real transaction. A successful lookup normally includes the transaction JSON, the validated ledger index, and a meta object. If the server reports that the transaction is not found, continue with the missing-history checks below before deciding that it never occurred.

Read meta.TransactionResult

meta.TransactionResult is the protocol result code. A success code such as tesSUCCESS means the requested ledger operation passed the transaction rules and its permitted changes were applied. Other codes indicate failure for a specific reason. Inclusion in a validated ledger does not mean the requested action succeeded.

A failed transaction can still consume its fee when the protocol rules require it. Therefore, compare the fee and the account’s balance changes even when the requested payment, offer, or setting change failed. Do not label every validated transaction as a successful transfer.

Read meta.AffectedNodes

meta.AffectedNodes lists ledger entries that were created, deleted, or modified. Each entry can contain a CreatedNode, ModifiedNode, or DeletedNode object, along with the ledger-entry type and before-and-after fields.

  • AccountRoot: Check balance, sequence, owner count, and account settings when relevant.
  • RippleState: Check trust-line balances, limits, and flags for issued assets.
  • Offer: Check whether an offer was created, partially consumed, or removed.
  • DirectoryNode and related entries: Use these to understand offer-directory changes, not as independent payments.
  • Other ledger objects: Interpret fields according to the transaction type and the asset involved.

Compare the PreviousFields, FinalFields, and, where present, NewFields values. This shows what the validated transaction changed instead of relying on a wallet’s inferred balance history.

How to verify a payment amount

For a Payment, do not assume that the requested Amount is the amount the destination received. Partial payments, issued currencies, path payments, and exchange-rate effects can make the delivered value different from the requested value. Use the metadata’s delivered-amount field when it is present and interpret whether it is XRP or an issued-currency object.

  • For XRP, account for drops and the transaction fee charged to the sending account.
  • For issued currencies, check the currency code and issuer as well as the numeric value.
  • For a partial payment, treat the delivered amount as the destination’s actual result, not the maximum requested amount.
  • Use affected AccountRoot and trust-line entries to confirm the corresponding balance changes.

If the delivered amount and affected-node balances appear inconsistent, verify that you opened the validated transaction response, not a cached explorer summary or an unvalidated candidate.

When a transaction or account-history record is missing

Check the server’s actual history range

XRPL servers retain different amounts of history. Some have complete history; others are configured as trimmed or have not fetched older ledgers. An account_tx response can therefore cover only a subset of the range you requested. Compare the returned ledger_index_min and ledger_index_max with the period you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the server’s minimum index is newer than the suspected event, the absence is not evidence that the event never happened. Repeat the query against an independent server or explorer that retains the required range. A “not found” response from a limited-history node means only that this data source could not provide the record.

Check the bounds and pagination

  • Make sure the requested minimum index is not greater than the maximum index.
  • Use the ledger range that corresponds to the date under investigation; timestamps are approximate guides, not substitutes for index coverage.
  • Follow every pagination marker.
  • Search the exact transaction hash separately if one is available.

Reconcile two sources

When an explorer and API disagree, compare the transaction hash, validated ledger index, and ledger hash. If all three agree, the difference is usually a display, indexing, or field-format issue. If they do not agree, prefer the record explicitly marked validated and repeat the lookup against another independent source.

Do not treat a wallet notification, pending queue, or cached balance as equivalent to a validated transaction. Conversely, do not treat a missing result from one API server as proof of a rollback: validated ledger data is immutable, while server history coverage and indexing can vary.

Separate ledger-state defects from node database problems

The phrase “ledger bug” can describe several technically different failures. Determine which layer the report concerns before attributing an account impact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Reported problem What to inspect What it can establish
Consensus or validated-ledger defect Validated ledger index, ledger hash, transaction metadata, and independent historical records Whether public ledger state or transaction outcomes were affected
Node’s local transaction database The node’s stored SQLite records, repair logs, and results from another history source Whether that node’s query data was incomplete or incorrect
Explorer or indexer display problem Raw API response, validation flag, ledger identity, and a second explorer or server Whether the presentation layer misreported an otherwise valid record
Client-library or wallet compromise Installed package version, advisory scope, key-handling path, and signing history Whether private keys or signing operations may have been exposed

For example, rippled’s ledger-cleaner documentation describes repairing incorrect entries in SQLite transaction databases caused by a fixed bug. That is a local node-data maintenance issue. It does not, by itself, show that the validated ledger was wrong or that an account’s funds changed.

Ask the maintainer’s report four questions: Which software versions are affected? Which ledger ranges or data components are affected? Is the defect local, consensus-related, or client-side? What remediation and verification procedure does the maintainer prescribe? Without those answers, “affected by a ledger bug” is too broad to support a conclusion.

If the issue involves the xrpl.js package

The XRP Ledger Foundation advisory dated April 22, 2025 describes a separate client-library security incident involving compromised package versions 4.2.1 through 4.2.4 and 2.14.2. It identifies 4.2.5 and 2.14.3 as patched versions and advises users of affected releases to stop using them and rotate potentially exposed keys or secrets.

This is a key-security incident, not evidence that an arbitrary account-history discrepancy came from a consensus or ledger-state defect. First verify the exact installed version and whether the software handled signing keys. Then follow the current advisory’s instructions; package status and recommended versions can change after the advisory date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Stop signing transactions with an affected release.
  • Preserve the version information and installation timeline for incident analysis.
  • Move to a currently supported, patched release after checking the maintainer’s latest guidance.
  • Rotate keys or secrets that may have been exposed, using a trusted process.
  • Use the transaction-history workflow to look for unauthorized validated transactions.

Changing software does not erase or reverse a validated transaction. If you find unauthorized activity, preserve the hashes and ledger indexes and contact the relevant exchange, custodian, or incident-response team promptly.

A practical evidence worksheet

For each transaction under review, record the following in a spreadsheet or plain-text case file:

Field Why it matters
Account address Defines the public history being queried.
Transaction hash Stable identity for cross-source comparison.
Validated flag Separates final ledger data from provisional data.
Validated ledger index and hash Identifies the immutable ledger version containing the record.
Transaction type and participants Explains which account role and rules apply.
TransactionResult Shows whether the requested operation succeeded or failed.
Fee Explains a balance reduction even when the operation failed.
Delivered amount Shows what a Payment actually delivered when the field is available.
AffectedNodes Shows created, deleted, and modified ledger entries.
API ledger range searched Proves whether the data source covered the suspected period.
Software version and advisory scope Connects observed evidence to the reported bug rather than guessing.

Keep the raw JSON response alongside your notes. Screenshots can omit validation flags, ledger identity, or metadata fields that become important during reconciliation.

Common mistakes and their fixes

“The wallet says sent, so it succeeded.”

Fix: Look up the hash and read validated and TransactionResult. A wallet can show a submission or provisional state before final validation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The transaction is in a validated ledger, so the payment succeeded.”

Fix: Read meta.TransactionResult. Validated failed transactions remain part of ledger history and may still charge a fee.

“The requested Payment amount equals the recipient’s receipt.”

Fix: Inspect the delivered-amount field and the destination’s affected ledger entries, especially for partial payments and issued currencies.

“The API returned no record, so it never happened.”

Fix: Check the response’s actual minimum and maximum ledger indexes, then query a source with the required history and complete pagination.

“A node repair notice proves customer funds changed.”

Fix: Determine whether the notice concerns a local transaction database. Confirm account effects in validated ledger metadata from an independent source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A vulnerable client package proves every account was compromised.”

Fix: Verify the installed version, whether keys were exposed, and whether unauthorized validated transactions exist. Apply the advisory’s key-rotation guidance where applicable.

How to state your conclusion accurately

After the checks, classify the result narrowly:

  • Confirmed validated effect: A transaction hash is present in a validated ledger, its result code and affected nodes show the relevant change, and independent sources agree on ledger identity.
  • Confirmed failed transaction: The transaction is validated, but TransactionResult is not a success code; describe any fee or other recorded effects separately.
  • Unresolved history: The queried source did not cover the suspected ledger range or could not locate the hash. State that the event remains unverified rather than claiming it did not occur.
  • Local data issue: One node or explorer disagrees while validated records from another source are consistent. Attribute the discrepancy to data availability or indexing until stronger evidence appears.
  • Possible key compromise: The account used an affected client version or shows unauthorized validated transactions. Treat it as a security incident and follow current maintainer and custodian guidance.

This wording keeps the evidence tied to what the protocol actually records. It avoids turning a missing API row, a wallet display, or a general bug label into an unsupported claim about lost funds.
