There is no universal public checker that can confirm whether a particular work was used to train an AI model. For an image, you can search an available dataset index such as LAION-5B and document a matching record. That can show that the index contains a related item; it cannot prove that a named deployed model trained on that record. A search with no result also cannot rule out a private dataset, another index, a different version of the file, or a model whose training data is undisclosed.
The most reliable investigation combines four kinds of evidence: a carefully documented copy of your work, a search of a relevant dataset index where one exists, the provider’s policy for the exact service and date, and records of any account or file preference you set for future use.

What you can—and cannot—find out
“Was my art used to train AI?” sounds like a yes-or-no question, but the available evidence usually answers narrower questions. Keep the claim matched to what you actually observed.

A similar-looking generated image, a model reproducing a distinctive detail, or a stylistic resemblance is not sufficient evidence of training on your file. Those observations may justify further investigation, but they do not identify the training dataset or run.

Start by identifying the exact work and exposure
Before searching, make a record that lets you distinguish the original from reposts, crops, edits, and later versions. This also prevents an ambiguous match from becoming an overconfident claim.
- Save the original file at its highest available quality, plus any publicly posted crop, resize, or compressed version.
- Record the title, creator name, original publication date, first publication URL, and the accounts or services where you uploaded it.
- Note whether the work was public on a website, submitted to a stock library, uploaded to a chatbot or cloud editor, or kept in a private account. These routes can have different rules.
- Where practical, retain stable copies and a file hash. A hash does not reveal training use, but it helps show which exact version you investigated.
- Write down the relevant dates. A provider can change its terms, dataset contents, or account controls, so a policy viewed today may not describe an earlier submission.
Separate direct submissions from public-web exposure. A file sent to an individual consumer service is governed by that service’s data controls. A work posted publicly may instead be within the broad categories a foundation-model developer describes as publicly available internet information. A stock-library upload can have still different rules.
For images, search a dataset index
What an image-index search does
Creator-facing tools such as Have I Been Trained? can help search indexed image material, including records associated with LAION datasets. The useful result is not “this model trained on my art.” It is “this searched dataset index contains a matching or related record.” Open the result details and preserve the associated source URL, caption, identifier, and any date or metadata shown.

- Prepare the original image and representative variants. Include the full image and, if the service permits, crops that isolate distinctive areas.
- Use the image-search tool to submit the file or an approved fingerprint. Follow the tool’s current instructions rather than assuming that a visual match covers every derivative.
- For each result, capture a screenshot or exported record showing the match, the index name, the source URL, and the date you searched.
- Open the associated metadata when available. Check whether the result is your original page, a repost, a thumbnail, or a visually similar but unrelated image.
- Store the result beside your original file and a note describing the match confidence and the version searched.
How to interpret a hit
A hit is evidence about the index, not a map of all model training. LAION describes LAION-5B as an index of image-text material assembled from web data. Its original description reports 5.85 billion CLIP-filtered image-text pairs—LAION, 2022. That scale makes an index result useful as a lead, while also making it unsafe to infer which later model, if any, used the record.

Index contents and availability can change. A record may be removed from a maintained dataset, a later iteration may add safety filtering, or a copy may already have been downloaded by another party. A removal request or registry preference should therefore be described as affecting future maintenance or use within the stated scope—not as erasing every copy or undoing completed training.
How to interpret no result
No match means only that the searched index did not return one for the submitted version and search method. It does not exclude a private dataset, a different public dataset, a transformed or caption-only copy, an image that was indexed under another URL, or a model trained before the index changed. The reviewed sources do not establish a comprehensive image search service for every dataset, and they do not establish an equivalent universal search for text, audio, or video.
Check the provider and the account context
After an index search, identify which company or service could have received the work and read the policy that applied to that product, account type, and date. A general statement about one product cannot be extended to another.

OpenAI individual services
OpenAI’s Help Center says eligible content from individual services may be used to improve models and describes controls in ChatGPT and its Privacy Portal. It says an opt-out stops use of new conversations and tasks after the opt-out takes effect. The published guidance also warns that feedback can cause the associated conversation to be used, that support conversations may be used when the setting is enabled, and that Codex has a separate environment setting.

OpenAI’s wording is explicit: “After you opt out, we won’t use your new conversations to improve our models.” Treat that as a prospective control. It does not identify whether an earlier conversation was included, and it does not cover a copy of your work that you posted on a public website or supplied to another provider.
OpenAI business products
OpenAI’s business policy states that inputs and outputs from business products—including ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, and the API—are not used for training by default unless the organization opts into data sharing. Confirm the current terms and the contract for your particular product. “Business account” is not a universal exemption for material sent through a different consumer service, shared publicly, or handled by a connected third party.
OpenAI’s foundation-model overview
OpenAI describes three broad development-data sources: publicly available internet information, third-party partnerships, and information that users, human trainers, and researchers provide or generate. This is a description of collection categories, not a public per-work lookup. It cannot tell you whether a specific page, image, article, or recording entered a particular training run.

Adobe Creative Cloud, Document Cloud, Stock, and Firefly
Adobe separates product-improvement content analysis from generative-AI training. Its Content Analysis FAQ says analysis of content processed or stored on Creative Cloud and Document Cloud servers for product improvement is under user control, and separately says that it does not analyze that content to train generative AI unless the user submits it to Adobe Stock. Adobe says Firefly models were trained on licensed content such as Adobe Stock and public-domain content where copyright has expired.

Do not collapse those statements into “Adobe never uses content” or “all Adobe uploads train Firefly.” The service, submission route, preference, and date matter. A file kept in a cloud account, a file submitted to Adobe Stock, and a file used with a Firefly feature can be subject to different controls.

Consumer-service opt-outs
Open the provider’s current data-control area or privacy portal for the specific account. Read the scope before enabling an opt-out: whether it covers conversations, tasks, uploaded files, feedback, support interactions, or a separate coding environment. Save the confirmation screen, email, or account record and write down the effective date.
An opt-out is not a historical proof. If it applies to new conversations and tasks, content submitted before the effective date requires a separate policy inquiry. If you later send feedback, check whether the provider treats that feedback differently from ordinary conversations.

Adobe’s Content Credentials guide describes a creator preference for generative-AI training and usage that is embedded in each file through Content Credentials. The preference is currently supported by Firefly workflows. Selecting it requires a verified name or a connected social account, and Adobe says the preference prevents the work from being uploaded to Adobe Stock. The signal can also affect Firefly features such as Style Reference, Structure Reference, and Generate Similar.
This is a file-level request recognized within a supported workflow, not a universal block across every model or dataset. It also does not prove that the file was never copied or used before the preference was attached. Keep the credential record and the date it was applied.
Build an evidence packet before contacting a provider
If an index hit or policy review gives you a meaningful lead, assemble a concise packet. Providers can investigate a dated, specific question more effectively than a claim based only on resemblance.
- Identity: your name, account identifier, and the exact file name or title.
- Original: the highest-quality file, publication URL, first-publication date, and hash if available.
- Variants: crops, resized copies, captions, filenames, and repost URLs.
- Dataset evidence: index name, result page, record identifier, associated source URL, screenshots, and search date.
- Service history: product, account type, upload date, relevant setting, and the date a preference or opt-out took effect.
- Question: ask whether the provider can confirm inclusion in a named dataset or training run, and ask what removal or preference process applies. Do not assert that a model used the work when your evidence shows only an index match.
Use the provider’s official help, privacy, or dataset-contact channel. Save the response and the date. A policy answer may clarify scope without confirming your individual file; preserve that distinction in your records.

Why generated similarity is not proof
Generative systems can produce an image with a similar composition, palette, subject, or style for reasons that do not identify a particular source file. A public image may have influenced a model indirectly, multiple works may share visual conventions, or the prompt may describe common elements. Without direct evidence connecting your file to a named dataset and training process, the accurate statement is that you observed a resemblance—not that the model trained on your work.
The same caution applies to text, audio, and video. The sources available here substantiate image-dataset searching and selected service policies, not a complete search procedure for those media. For a writing, music, or video work, document where it was published, identify likely providers, read the relevant service terms, and ask the provider what records or opt-out mechanism it offers instead of promising a universal checker.
A repeatable investigation checklist
- Define the work: preserve the original, variants, title, creator identity, URLs, and dates.
- Map exposure: list public pages, stock submissions, cloud services, chatbot conversations, business accounts, and private repositories.
- Search where a relevant index exists: for images, use an available creator-facing dataset search and preserve every result’s metadata.
- Classify the evidence: label each item as an index match, policy statement, account setting, or file preference.
- Read the dated policy: verify the product, account type, region if stated, and submission date.
- Set a prospective control: apply the provider’s opt-out or supported file preference, then save confirmation and effective date.
- Contact the provider when needed: send the evidence packet and ask a narrowly worded question about a named dataset, training run, or removal process.
- State only what the evidence supports: distinguish “a matching entry appears in this index” from “Model X trained on my work.”
What to do when you need certainty
In most cases, certainty is unavailable because providers do not publish a universal registry mapping arbitrary works to every training run. The strongest practical approach is to preserve contemporaneous evidence, use the narrowest accurate description of each finding, and obtain a provider’s direct response when the stakes justify it. A present-day preference can reduce future exposure within its stated scope, but it cannot turn an unknown historical event into a verified negative.
