To check Windows ML support, verify your Windows version and system architecture in Settings > System > About. Microsoft’s published baseline is a Windows release supported by Windows App SDK, an x64 or ARM64 system, and any PC hardware configuration. A CPU is sufficient for the baseline inference path; an NPU or discrete GPU is not required.
Use winver to check the exact build. If you need a hardware-optimized execution provider from the Windows ML catalog, the separate threshold is Windows 11 version 24H2, build 26100 or later, plus compatible hardware and drivers. That requirement does not mean every PC on build 26100 can use every provider, nor does ordinary Windows ML support require an NPU.

“Windows ML support” can describe three different checks. Treating them as one requirement leads to unnecessary upgrades or a false expectation that every Windows ML application will run on every compatible PC.

1. Windows ML framework support
The framework’s general requirements are a Windows version supported by the relevant Windows App SDK release and an x64 or ARM64 system. Microsoft describes the hardware requirement as “Any PC configuration (CPUs, integrated/discrete GPUs, NPUs).” In practical terms, the framework can use a CPU as its baseline execution path.
2. Optional hardware acceleration
Windows ML also exposes execution providers that can use graphics or neural-processing hardware. CPU execution is the simplest path. DirectML GPU support is available on supported Windows versions, while newer hardware-optimized providers for NPUs and particular GPU hardware require Windows 11 version 24H2 (build 26100) or later and still depend on the device and driver.
3. The application using Windows ML
An application can impose requirements that are narrower than the framework’s requirements. It might require a particular Windows edition or build, a specific processor architecture, a .NET runtime, a Visual C++ runtime, or an app-specific model format. Developer documentation can also list SDKs, language versions and build tools that are needed to create or package an application; those are not automatically requirements for someone merely running it.
There is no single Windows ML compatibility switch
Windows does not expose a button that reports a universal “Windows ML compatible” result. The framework is a software layer, and an application chooses which execution providers and model formats it can use. A PC can therefore pass the framework baseline while failing an app’s narrower requirement, or pass the operating-system test while lacking a provider for its particular accelerator.
Use the About page and winver as an inventory, not as a guarantee of performance. Record the version, build, architecture and processor details, then compare those facts with the application and provider documentation. This avoids treating a Copilot+ label, an NPU specification or a particular GPU brand as a universal Windows ML requirement.
Check your PC in a few minutes
- Open the About page. Select Start > Settings > System > About. You can also search for About your PC from Start.
- Record the Windows edition and version. In Windows specifications, note the edition, version and OS build. The edition (such as Home or Pro) is not, by itself, the Windows ML compatibility test; the supported Windows release for the Windows App SDK version used by the app is what matters.
- Check the system type. Under Device specifications, find System type. A qualifying entry identifies an x64-based system or an ARM-based system corresponding to the ARM64 requirement. A 32-bit x86 system does not meet the published x64-or-ARM64 architecture requirement.
- Confirm the exact build with winver. Press Windows key+R, type
winver, and press Enter. The dialog shows the Windows release and OS build. This is useful when Settings displays a version but you need to distinguish an older 24H2 build from a newer one. - Define your goal. If you only need CPU inference, stop after confirming the supported Windows release and architecture. If you need a catalog-based NPU or GPU provider, continue with the 24H2/build, hardware and driver checks below.
How to read the Windows version and build
The baseline wording is not “Windows 11 only.” It is a Windows version supported by Windows App SDK. Because Windows App SDK support can change between releases, the application’s documentation and the Windows App SDK requirements for the package it uses are authoritative for that particular combination.
For optional hardware-optimized execution providers, Microsoft’s current Windows ML documentation identifies Windows 11 version 24H2, build 26100 or greater as the minimum Windows threshold. In winver, look for “Version 24H2” and a build number beginning with 26100 or higher. A later build normally satisfies the numerical threshold, but it does not by itself prove that a provider is available for your hardware.

It does mean the catalog’s newer hardware-optimized providers are outside the documented 24H2/build-26100 requirement.

Verify the architecture requirement
Windows ML’s broad architecture requirement is x64 or ARM64. The About page’s System type entry is the quickest built-in check.
- x64-based processor: Meets the framework’s x64 architecture requirement.
- ARM-based processor: Usually identifies an ARM64 Windows installation. Confirm that the application itself supports ARM64; an app can have narrower architecture support than Windows ML.
- 32-bit operating system or x86 system: Does not meet the published x64-or-ARM64 baseline.
Architecture and operating-system version are separate checks. A modern ARM64 device can still fail an app’s requirement if the app has no ARM64 build, while an x64 device can meet the framework baseline without having an NPU.
What “any PC configuration” covers
Microsoft’s broad hardware wording includes conventional desktop and laptop CPUs, integrated graphics, discrete graphics cards and NPUs. It does not promise that each component can run every model or provider. It means that Windows ML has a supported baseline path without requiring one particular class of silicon.
For example, a desktop with only an x64 CPU can use CPU inference. A laptop with integrated graphics may use CPU or a supported GPU provider. A newer ARM64 system may qualify for the framework but still need an ARM64 version of the application. An NPU is relevant only when the selected application and provider support that NPU generation.
Do you need an NPU or a discrete GPU?
No for baseline Windows ML support. Microsoft lists CPUs, integrated GPUs, discrete GPUs and NPUs under “Any PC configuration,” and describes CPU execution as the starting path with no additional hardware setup.
An NPU or GPU matters only when the workload or application is intended to use a particular accelerated provider. Acceleration can reduce CPU use or improve throughput for some models, but the documentation does not establish a universal performance threshold or guarantee that every model will run faster on every accelerator. The model, provider, driver and application implementation all affect the result.
| Execution goal | What the documentation establishes | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| CPU inference | CPU is a valid baseline path; no NPU or discrete GPU is required. | The Windows release supported by the app’s Windows App SDK path, x64/ARM64 architecture and the app’s own runtime requirements. |
| DirectML GPU execution | DirectML GPU support is available on supported Windows versions; it is described as a legacy execution-provider path. | Whether the app uses DirectML, whether your GPU driver is supported and whether the model’s operators are compatible. |
| NPU or specific hardware-optimized provider | Windows 11 24H2, build 26100 or later is required for the newer catalog-based providers. | Provider availability for the exact device, compatible hardware and a suitable driver. Build 26100 alone is not a guarantee. |
Check the PC for hardware-optimized providers
- Confirm Windows 11 24H2 or later. Use
winverand verify version 24H2 with build 26100 or higher. - Identify the accelerator. Check Settings > System > About for the processor model, and use the graphics or device information supplied by Windows to determine whether the PC has an integrated GPU, discrete GPU or NPU. The presence of a device is not enough; the provider must support that device.
- Check the provider’s device list and driver requirement. Hardware-optimized providers obtained through the Windows ML catalog have their own compatibility conditions. Consult the provider and application documentation for the exact device family and minimum driver.
- Install the required driver through the normal supported channel. A provider can remain unavailable when the driver is missing, too old or not the required vendor version, even on a qualifying Windows build.
- Confirm that the application requests that provider. Some applications fall back to CPU automatically; others require an explicit provider selection or ship only one execution path.
Do not interpret a missing accelerator provider as proof that Windows ML itself is unsupported. It can indicate only that the optional provider is unavailable for the current device or driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeparate Windows ML requirements from app requirements
When an application will not install or launch, inspect its requirements independently from the framework check. Microsoft’s getting-started and deployment material lists language-specific developer prerequisites, including .NET versions and build tools for particular development paths. Those details are relevant to building or packaging an app, not a reason for an ordinary user to purchase new hardware.

For a packaged or downloaded application, check the publisher’s documentation for:
- Supported Windows editions, versions and OS builds.
- x64, ARM64 or both.
- Required .NET, Visual C++ or other runtime components.
- Model format, memory and storage requirements.
- Whether CPU, DirectML, NPU or another execution provider is mandatory or optional.
- Required graphics, NPU and driver versions.
An app can therefore fail on a PC that meets Windows ML’s general baseline. Conversely, an app that supports CPU execution can work on a machine with no NPU even though its documentation also advertises an accelerated mode.
Use this decision table for a quick verdict
| Your findings | Likely result | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Supported Windows release, x64 or ARM64, no accelerator requirement | Meets the general Windows ML baseline. | Install or run the application and satisfy its app-specific runtime requirements. |
| Supported Windows release and architecture, but no NPU or discrete GPU | CPU inference remains a valid path. | Use CPU unless the app explicitly requires an accelerator. |
| Windows 11 24H2/build 26100 or later, compatible-looking hardware, provider missing | Framework threshold is met, but provider compatibility is unresolved. | Check the exact device model, driver and catalog/provider requirements. |
| Older Windows build, x64 or ARM64 | May meet the framework baseline; newer catalog providers are not covered by the 24H2 threshold. | Check the Windows App SDK and application requirements, then use CPU or a supported legacy path if available. |
| 32-bit x86 system | Does not meet the published architecture baseline. | An application upgrade or hardware change would be required; do not assume a Windows update alone can provide x64/ARM64 support. |
Record these details before troubleshooting
Write down the exact text rather than relying on labels such as “modern PC” or “AI PC.” Keep the Windows edition, version, full OS build, system type, processor model and graphics or NPU model together. If a provider fails, also record the driver version and whether the application selected CPU, DirectML or another provider.
Recommended Free Tools
This record helps distinguish a version problem from a packaging problem. For instance, a 24H2 machine with an x64 processor may satisfy the operating-system threshold while an outdated GPU driver prevents a catalog provider from loading. Conversely, a fully updated driver cannot make a 32-bit operating system meet the x64-or-ARM64 framework requirement.
Troubleshoot common “not supported” messages
The app says Windows is unsupported
Record the version and build from winver, then compare them with the app’s stated Windows requirement and the Windows App SDK release it uses. “Windows ML supports Windows” is not a substitute for the application’s minimum build. If the app requires 24H2, an earlier supported Windows release will still be rejected by that app.
The app says an NPU or GPU is missing
This is an application or provider requirement, not the general Windows ML baseline. Confirm whether the app offers CPU fallback. If it does, select that mode or allow automatic provider selection. If acceleration is mandatory, verify the exact hardware and driver rather than relying on the Windows build number.
The PC is on build 26100, but the provider is unavailable
Check the provider’s device and driver conditions. The 24H2/build-26100 threshold is necessary for the newer catalog route, not sufficient for every device. A supported Windows build with an unsupported accelerator, an incompatible driver or an unavailable catalog package can produce this result.

Return to Settings > System > About and read the complete System type line. If it identifies a 32-bit operating system, it does not meet the x64-or-ARM64 framework requirement. If it identifies an ARM-based system, confirm ARM64 support in the app’s documentation before installation.

A developer tutorial asks for tools or a .NET version
Distinguish development from use. SDKs, compilers, language versions and build tools are needed to build or deploy a particular Windows ML application. They are not automatically required to run a prebuilt application, although the prebuilt app may require a runtime package specified by its publisher.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you upgrade the PC?
Do not buy a new PC solely because Windows ML is mentioned. First establish whether the application runs acceptably on the CPU. Consider an accelerator only when the app or model requires one, CPU performance is inadequate for the actual workload, and the target provider lists your device and driver as compatible.
- Stay with CPU when the app supports it and response time, throughput and power use are acceptable.
- Investigate GPU acceleration when the app supports DirectML or another GPU provider and your current driver is compatible.
- Investigate an NPU only for an application that explicitly supports an NPU provider and identifies the required hardware generation.
- Update Windows cautiously. Moving to 24H2 can satisfy the catalog’s version threshold, but it cannot add missing hardware or guarantee provider availability.
There is no universal performance cutoff in the Windows ML documentation. Measure the requirements of the specific model and application rather than assuming that an NPU or discrete GPU will improve every workload.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run Windows ML without an NPU?
Yes. CPU inference is the baseline path, and Microsoft lists any PC hardware configuration. An NPU is needed only when a specific application or hardware-optimized provider makes it mandatory.
Is Windows 11 24H2 required for all Windows ML use?
No. Version 24H2 with build 26100 or later is the threshold for newer hardware-optimized providers obtained through the Windows ML catalog. Baseline framework support can exist on an earlier Windows release supported by the relevant Windows App SDK, with CPU execution.
Does build 26100 guarantee NPU or GPU acceleration?
No. It is a Windows threshold, not a complete compatibility verdict. The exact accelerator, driver and provider package must also be supported, and the application must request or permit that provider.
Does a Copilot+ PC automatically support every Windows ML app?
No. A Copilot+ designation or an NPU indicates a hardware category, not universal application compatibility. Check the app’s Windows version, architecture, runtime, model and provider requirements.
Will an integrated GPU work with DirectML?
It may, because DirectML GPU support is available on supported Windows versions, but the app, GPU driver and model operators must be compatible. The documentation does not promise support for every integrated GPU or every workload.
Best Value
What if my Windows PC is ARM-based?
ARM64 satisfies the framework’s broad architecture requirement when the Windows installation and release are supported. Verify that the particular application has an ARM64 build or a supported emulation path; Windows ML compatibility alone does not supply an ARM64 app.
Do I need to install developer tools to run Windows ML?
Not for a prebuilt application unless its publisher lists a runtime prerequisite. Compilers, SDKs, language versions and build tools apply to creating or packaging an app, not automatically to ordinary use.
Is there a command that gives a definitive Windows ML verdict?
No universal command is documented for consumers. Use Settings and winver to collect the OS and architecture facts, then check the application and provider documentation for the final verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to check Windows ML support?
Open Settings > System > About, record the Windows version and System type, then run winver for the full build. Compare those details with the app’s requirements. x64 or ARM64 plus a Windows release supported by its Windows App SDK path meets the broad framework check.
Do I need Windows 11 24H2 for CPU inference?
No. The 24H2, build 26100 threshold applies to newer hardware-optimized providers from the Windows ML catalog. CPU inference can remain available on an earlier Windows release if that release is supported by the Windows App SDK path used by the application.
Can a PC with no GPU run a Windows ML application?
Yes, when the application supports CPU execution. Microsoft lists any PC configuration and describes CPU as the starting path. Confirm the app’s own architecture, runtime, memory and model requirements before installing.
Why is my provider unavailable even though I have build 26100?
Build 26100 or later is necessary for the newer catalog route but does not guarantee provider support. Check the exact device model, driver version, provider device list and whether the application actually requests that provider.
Does x64 Windows mean every Windows ML app will run?
No. x64 satisfies the framework architecture baseline, but an application may require a particular Windows build, runtime, model format, memory capacity or execution provider. ARM64 applications can likewise have narrower support than the framework.
Should I buy an NPU PC for Windows ML?
Not solely for Windows ML. First test whether the application’s CPU path is adequate. Consider an NPU only when the app requires or clearly supports a specific NPU provider and your target device and driver meet that provider’s conditions.
The Bottom Line
Check Settings > System > About and winver: Windows ML’s broad baseline is a Windows release supported by Windows App SDK on x64 or ARM64 hardware, and CPU inference needs no NPU. Windows 11 24H2, build 26100 or later is a separate requirement for newer catalog hardware-optimized providers, which also need compatible devices, drivers and application support.
