How to Check Whether Your Windows PC Meets Copilot+ PC Requirements

To check a Windows PC for Copilot+ eligibility, identify its exact processor and configuration, verify that Windows detects an NPU, and confirm the NPU rating in the manufacturer’s specifications. Microsoft’s Copilot+ definition centers on a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Microsoft’s published Recall requirements also list minimum capacities of 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. A Windows 11 compatibility result alone does not certify a PC as Copilot+.

What you are actually checking

A Copilot+ PC is a Windows 11 device built around a high-performance NPU. The decisive question is not whether a product is advertised as an “AI PC,” nor whether Windows 11 runs on it. You need to verify the exact processor and hardware configuration in the individual computer.

Microsoft’s developer documentation describes Copilot+ PCs as a new class of Windows 11 hardware powered by a high-performance NPU. Its stated performance bar is an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second. Microsoft’s Recall system-requirements page lists a Copilot+ PC, a 40 TOPS NPU, at least 16 GB of RAM, and at least 256 GB of storage capacity. Recall has additional setup and free-space conditions, so those capacity figures should not be treated as a complete checklist for every Copilot+ feature.

The practical test therefore has four parts:

  • Confirm the exact PC model and complete processor designation.
  • Confirm the installed memory and storage capacities.
  • Establish that Windows detects an NPU, then verify the NPU’s rated TOPS from an official specification.
  • Check Windows 11 and the requirements of the specific AI feature you intend to use.

Copilot+ checks at a glance

Aspect Microsoft requirement or guidance Where to check What the result tells you
NPU capability More than 40 TOPS in Microsoft’s Copilot+ description; Recall lists a 40 TOPS NPU Exact processor or device specification; Task Manager can show whether an NPU is detected An NPU entry proves detection, not that the chip reaches the Copilot+ performance threshold
Memory 16 GB RAM in the published Recall hardware requirements Settings > System > About Shows installed system memory; feature-specific software may impose other conditions
Storage 256 GB storage capacity in the published Recall hardware requirements Settings > System > Storage or File Explorer > This PC Shows device capacity; Recall also has separate setup and available-space requirements
Operating system Copilot+ PCs are Windows 11 devices Settings > System > About; Windows 11 PC Health Check Windows 11 eligibility is an operating-system check, not Copilot+ certification
Individual features Requirements vary. Auto SR, for example, specifies platform, Windows version, display, driver, and game conditions The Microsoft support page for the feature you want to use A Copilot+ label does not guarantee every AI experience works in every configuration or region

Step 1: Find the exact PC model and processor

Start with the computer itself rather than a retailer description or a broad label such as “AI laptop.” Windows reports the model and processor in Settings > System > About. Record the complete processor name, including its series and model number. Also note the precise PC model shown on that page or on the manufacturer’s identification label.

Two computers sold under a similar family name can use different processors, memory configurations, firmware, or displays. “AI PC” is a marketing category, not proof that the installed NPU meets the Copilot+ threshold. The model and processor information you record is what you will match against the current technical specification for that exact configuration.

Why the full processor designation matters

Microsoft’s developer guidance gives processor-family examples such as Snapdragon X, AMD Ryzen AI 300 series, and Intel Core Ultra 200V series. Those examples are useful leads, but they are not a blanket approval for every chip or every computer sold under the family name. Use the complete SKU and the manufacturer’s specification for the actual device.

Step 2: Check installed RAM

In Settings > System > About, find the installed RAM value. Microsoft’s Recall requirements use 16 GB as the minimum hardware capacity. Record the installed amount rather than the maximum memory the motherboard could theoretically support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory capacity is only one part of feature compatibility. Windows, drivers, background applications, and the AI feature itself also consume memory. If a specification lists a larger capacity than the computer currently has, verify whether that is an upgrade option or the configuration you are actually buying; eligibility belongs to the installed configuration.

Step 3: Check storage capacity and available space

Open Settings > System > Storage to see the drive capacity and current usage. You can cross-check the drive size in File Explorer > This PC. Microsoft’s published Recall hardware requirements list 256 GB of storage capacity.

Capacity and free space are different measurements. A drive can meet the capacity requirement while having too little free space for Windows updates or a particular feature’s setup process. Recall’s documentation includes separate setup and available-space conditions; consult that page if Recall is your goal instead of treating the capacity figure as a guarantee that setup will complete.

Step 4: Look for an NPU in Task Manager

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then select the Performance tab. On a system equipped with an NPU that Windows recognizes, Task Manager can display NPU resource usage alongside other processors.

An NPU entry is useful evidence that the operating system detects dedicated neural-processing hardware. It is not a TOPS certificate. Microsoft’s Task Manager guidance does not state that the panel reports the NPU’s rated TOPS, so do not infer Copilot+ eligibility from a graph, a device name, or a percentage of utilization.

If Task Manager has no NPU entry

First install the latest Windows updates and the computer maker’s chipset, graphics, and firmware updates, then restart and check again. If Windows still shows no NPU, use Device Manager and the manufacturer’s support page to determine whether the model includes one and whether its driver is installed. A missing panel can indicate unsupported hardware, an unavailable driver, or a configuration that does not expose the NPU to Windows; it does not prove a qualifying NPU is present.

Step 5: Verify the NPU’s rated TOPS

Use the processor model you recorded in Step 1 to open the current technical specification from the processor manufacturer or the PC manufacturer. Look specifically for the NPU or AI-engine rating and its TOPS figure. Compare that rating with Microsoft’s Copilot+ guidance.

Do not substitute a general “AI acceleration” claim, GPU performance, CPU performance, or a benchmark score for the NPU rating. TOPS describes the NPU’s theoretical operations-per-second capability under the vendor’s stated conditions; it is the hardware signal Microsoft uses for Copilot+ classification. If the specification does not publish a TOPS value, the computer cannot be confirmed from that document alone. Ask the manufacturer for the exact configuration’s specification rather than assuming that another model in the same processor family has the same capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handling conflicting specifications

When a retailer page, a product brief, and a processor page disagree, prioritize the manufacturer’s current specification for the exact PC model and SKU. Check whether one document describes an optional processor, a different memory configuration, or a regional model. Keep the model number, processor SKU, and date of the specification together in your notes so that you do not accidentally validate a neighboring configuration.

Step 6: Check Windows 11 separately

Microsoft’s PC Health Check utility assesses whether a computer is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11. You can also review the installed edition and version under Settings > System > About.

Passing PC Health Check means the PC meets the Windows 11 upgrade assessment. Microsoft’s Windows 11 page does not describe PC Health Check as a Copilot+ eligibility or certification tool. A computer can therefore pass the Windows 11 check while lacking an NPU that reaches the Copilot+ threshold. Treat the operating-system result and the Copilot+ hardware review as separate decisions.

Step 7: Check the requirements of the feature you want

Copilot+ is a hardware category; individual experiences can add their own software and device conditions. Microsoft’s Auto SR documentation, for example, specifies supported device and platform combinations, Windows versions, display requirements, graphics drivers, and supported games.

How to interpret your results

All checks line up

If the exact processor and device specification show a qualifying NPU, Windows detects that NPU, the installed capacities meet Microsoft’s published baseline, and the PC runs Windows 11, the hardware is consistent with Copilot+ requirements. You must still check the individual feature’s conditions before expecting a particular experience to run.

The PC has an NPU, but no TOPS figure is published

Stop at “not confirmed.” NPU presence is not equivalent to the required performance rating. Search the exact manufacturer specification, not a generic family page, and contact the maker if the rating is absent or ambiguous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The processor family appears on a Microsoft example list, but the SKU is unclear

Treat the family name as a starting point only. Confirm the complete SKU and the NPU rating for the installed configuration. A family-level reference cannot establish that every member qualifies.

Windows 11 passes, but the NPU or memory check fails

Keep the results separate. Windows 11 compatibility does not override a missing or under-capable NPU, insufficient installed memory, or a configuration below a feature’s requirements.

Troubleshooting common misunderstandings

“My Task Manager shows NPU usage, so my PC is Copilot+.”

Task Manager confirms that Windows can expose an NPU for monitoring. Microsoft’s cited documentation does not say that it displays the TOPS rating. Verify the rating in the exact processor or PC specification.

“The product page says AI PC.”

That phrase can cover hardware with very different NPUs. Replace the marketing label with the processor SKU, the published NPU rating, and the installed memory and storage values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I upgraded Windows and expected Copilot+ features.”

Operating-system updates can deliver software support, but they cannot add a qualifying NPU to hardware that does not contain one. If the hardware test fails, a software installation cannot change that result.

“The PC meets the baseline, but a feature is unavailable.”

Check the feature page for build, driver, display, application, language, and regional conditions. Feature availability can also change as Microsoft updates Windows and its services. Recheck those conditions after installing the required updates.

Comparing two Windows PCs

Use the same evidence for both computers and compare the exact configurations, not just the product families.

Comparison point What to record Why it matters
Processor Complete model and SKU Determines which NPU specification applies
NPU Published TOPS rating and whether Windows detects it Separates a qualifying NPU from a merely present NPU
Memory Installed RAM Must meet the published baseline for features that require it
Storage Total capacity and free space Capacity and setup space are separate constraints
Software Windows edition, build, drivers, and firmware Features can require specific versions
Feature target Requirements for the AI experience you intend to use Copilot+ hardware alone does not guarantee universal feature support

If one specification is missing, mark that comparison point as unverified and obtain the manufacturer’s documentation before deciding. Do not fill gaps with the capabilities of a different model.

A printable verification checklist

  1. Open Settings > System > About and copy the full PC model and processor designation.
  2. Record the installed RAM shown on the About page.
  3. Open Settings > System > Storage and record drive capacity and available space.
  4. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Performance, and note whether an NPU appears.
  5. Find the exact processor or PC specification and record the NPU’s published TOPS rating.
  6. Confirm that the device runs Windows 11 or assess upgrade eligibility with PC Health Check.
  7. Read the requirements page for the specific AI feature, game, or application you plan to use.
  8. Save the model number and the specification date so future driver or feature changes can be checked against the same configuration.

When replacing or buying a PC is the only practical option

If the current computer lacks a qualifying NPU, software cannot create that hardware capability. A replacement must be evaluated as a complete configuration: processor and NPU rating first, then installed memory, storage, Windows version, and the requirements of the feature you care about.

For a new purchase, ask for the exact SKU and a specification that identifies the NPU capability. Avoid relying on a category badge, a processor family name without a model number, or a Windows 11 compatibility statement. Confirm the documentation before paying for a configuration that cannot be upgraded to the needed hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Does a discrete graphics card substitute for a Copilot+ NPU?

No. The Copilot+ definition is based on the capability of an NPU. GPU or CPU performance does not establish that the required NPU is present or reaches the stated TOPS level.

Is 256 GB of free space required for every Copilot+ PC?

The published Recall requirement refers to 256 GB of storage capacity and separately describes setup and available-space conditions. It is not a universal statement that every feature requires 256 GB of free space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a manufacturer certify a whole processor family at once?

A family reference can identify likely candidates, but your eligibility decision should use the exact processor SKU and PC configuration. Different models can have different NPU ratings, memory, storage, displays, or firmware.
