How to Check Whether Your Windows PC Is Missing Important Updates

The quickest reliable check is built into Windows. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. Install anything offered and restart when Windows asks. Then review Update history to verify what actually installed. A clean result describes what Windows Update is offering your PC now; it does not guarantee that every update released by Microsoft has reached every device.

Check for updates in Windows 11

Windows 11 puts the update controls in one place. Use this procedure when you want to know whether updates are waiting, whether a restart is required, or whether Windows is currently reporting a problem.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.
  2. In the Settings sidebar, select Windows Update.
  3. Read the status shown at the top of the page. Look for an available-update notice, an error, a pause notice, or a message that a restart is required.
  4. Select Check for updates to request a fresh check.
  5. If Windows offers an update, select Download & install. Keep the PC connected to power if it is a laptop.
  6. Restart when Windows requests it. Some installations are not complete until the restart finishes.
  7. Return to Settings > Windows Update after the restart and read the current status again.

The manual check is useful even when Windows normally checks automatically. It tells you what Windows Update currently sees for this particular computer, edition, hardware configuration, and connection.

  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Download and install any updates Windows offers.
  6. Restart if prompted, then revisit the Windows Update page to confirm the resulting status.

Windows 10’s update page can also show a warning that the PC is not receiving security updates. That warning needs context: the installed Windows 10 version may be out of service, an update may have failed, or the device may have a driver, storage, or compatibility problem.

What an update result actually tells you

“Up to date” should be read as Windows Update’s current assessment, not as a promise that every update released anywhere is already installed on this PC. Microsoft can release updates in stages while it evaluates compatibility and readiness, so two otherwise similar computers may not be offered the same update at the same time. A temporarily empty result can therefore be normal, especially when no applicable update has reached the device yet.

Read the surrounding status information instead of relying only on whether the page lists a download.

What you see What it means What to do
An available-update notice Windows Update has identified one or more updates currently offered to this PC. Review the details, select Download & install where shown, and restart if requested.
No update listed after a check Windows has no applicable update to offer at that moment. Staged delivery means this does not prove that every released update has reached the PC. Check the page for a pause, metered-connection, error, or restart condition and check again later if Microsoft is still assessing compatibility.
Updates are paused Windows is deliberately delaying update activity. Resume updates when practical. A pause delays updates; it is not evidence that the PC has no missing updates.
A restart is required An update has been downloaded or installed but needs a reboot to finish. Save work and restart, then check Windows Update again.
An error or low-storage warning Windows could not complete part of the update process. Record the displayed error, make room on the system drive if requested, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, and check for driver or connectivity problems.
“You’re not receiving security updates” The Windows 10 installation may be out of service, an update may have failed, or the device may have another update problem. Check the exact Windows version, update history, available storage, drivers, and the Windows 10 support options described below.

Verify what installed with Update history

A current status tells you what Windows is offering now. Update history provides evidence of what installed previously and when; use both views because history alone does not establish what is currently available.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Update history.
  4. Review the categories and dates of installed updates. Look for a recent installation that corresponds to the update Windows asked you to restart for.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select View update history.
  3. Review the entries and their installation dates.

Some entries also expose an uninstall option. Removing an update can weaken security or reintroduce the problem the update fixed, so do not uninstall one unless there is a specific need and you understand the consequences. If you do remove one to resolve a documented failure, return to Windows Update afterward and check the current status.

Why a PC may show no update

The connection is offline or unreliable

Windows Update needs an internet connection to contact Microsoft’s update service. Confirm that the PC is connected, open a normal website to verify the connection, and select Check for updates again. If the connection repeatedly drops, fix the network problem before judging the update result.

Updates are paused

Windows 11’s pause controls are on Settings > Windows Update. The current Windows 11 guidance permits a pause of up to 35 days. The pause expires and updates resume, but it is a delay control, not a security recommendation. Windows 10 has its own pause controls under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. If you did not intend to defer updates, resume them and run a new check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connection is metered

On a metered connection, Windows may avoid automatically downloading some updates to control data use. This can make an automatic check look quiet even though an update is available. Check the network setting, use a suitable unmetered connection when possible, and run the manual check. Do not disable metering blindly if your data plan charges for excess usage.

Microsoft is delivering the update in stages

Microsoft may hold an update back from a device while it evaluates compatibility and readiness. A staged rollout can explain why another PC has an update that yours does not. An empty result after a manual check means only that Windows has nothing to offer this device at that time; it is not proof that every update has been released to it.

The PC lacks storage

Insufficient free disk space can prevent an update from downloading, unpacking, or completing. Follow the storage guidance Windows displays, remove files you no longer need, empty temporary storage safely, and ensure that the system drive has room before trying again. Do not delete system folders at random to make space.

A driver or device problem is blocking installation

Microsoft identifies driver issues among possible causes of update failures. Read the exact error text, install only drivers obtained through a trusted device or PC manufacturer support channel, and use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. Random driver-updater utilities and registry edits are poor first responses: they can add new failures without fixing the underlying update condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The update needs a restart

Some updates cannot replace files that Windows is actively using. If the page asks for a restart, postpone only long enough to save your work, restart, and wait for the process to finish. Interrupting the restart or shutting the PC off during installation can leave the update incomplete. After Windows starts, check the status and history again.

A practical troubleshooting sequence when installation fails

Work through these checks in order. The sequence starts with reversible causes and leaves hardware decisions until you have the relevant evidence.

  1. Record the message. Note the exact error wording or code, whether Windows reports low storage, and whether a restart is pending.
  2. Confirm internet access. Reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet if necessary, then run Check for updates manually.
  3. Check pause and metering. Resume updates if they are paused and use an appropriate non-metered connection when your data plan allows.
  4. Free the requested space. Use Windows’ storage recommendations rather than deleting files from protected folders.
  5. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow the fixes it reports, then restart if it asks you to.
  6. Check update history. Determine whether the update failed repeatedly, installed partially, or succeeded but is waiting for a restart.
  7. Restart and recheck. Return to the Windows Update page and read the new status instead of assuming the installation completed.
  8. Escalate persistent hardware or compatibility issues. If the same failure continues after connectivity, storage, and troubleshooting checks, consult Microsoft’s current guidance or a qualified repair technician. Persistent incompatibility may require an operating-system upgrade or a replacement PC.

Keep the error code and the date of each attempt. That information makes Microsoft’s support guidance or a technician’s diagnosis more specific and avoids repeating steps that already failed.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025

This date changes how you should interpret a Windows 10 update check. Microsoft states: Windows 10 has reached the end of support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical support, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Therefore, a Windows 10 page that appears quiet is not equivalent to an actively supported operating system.

Each Windows 10 version is supported for 18 months, according to Microsoft. A warning about missing security updates can reflect that version lifecycle, a failed installation, a driver issue, insufficient free disk space, or another device problem. Check the exact Windows version and the update history before deciding which explanation applies.

Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. A Windows 10 PC running version 22H2 and meeting Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements may be eligible for a free upgrade. Eligibility is device-specific, so confirm it on the PC rather than assuming that every Windows 10 computer qualifies.

Choose the next step for a Windows 10 PC

Option When it fits What to verify
Upgrade the existing PC to Windows 11 The PC is running Windows 10 22H2 and meets Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements. Confirm compatibility and back up important files before starting the upgrade.
Consumer Extended Security Updates You need more time with a compatible Windows 10 installation and are eligible for the applicable program. Check Microsoft’s current terms, enrollment requirements, coverage, and end date before relying on this route.
Replace the PC The current device cannot meet Windows 11 requirements or continued use is impractical. Choose a computer that supports Windows 11 and meets your software, accessibility, and performance needs. Buying hardware is not required merely to run an update check.
Qualified repair help A specific device, driver, storage, or hardware fault is preventing updates. Provide the error message, Windows version, update history, and troubleshooting steps already attempted.

These are alternatives, not a requirement to buy a new computer. First establish whether the problem is ordinary update failure, an unsupported Windows 10 version, or hardware that cannot support Windows 11. Confirm current Extended Security Updates terms directly with Microsoft because eligibility and conditions can change.

How to tell whether your check was thorough

Before concluding that the PC is missing nothing important, verify all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You used the correct Settings path for the installed Windows version.
  • You selected Check for updates manually and waited for the result.
  • You read the status for pause, metered-network, error, storage, and restart messages.
  • You installed offered updates and completed any requested restart.
  • You reviewed Update history to see what installed and when.
  • You accounted for staged delivery, which can delay an update for compatibility assessment.
  • If the PC runs Windows 10, you considered the fact that support ended on October 14, 2025.

If every check is clear but a security warning remains, record the exact Windows edition and version, the warning text, and any error code. That evidence distinguishes an unsupported version from a failed update and gives Microsoft support or a qualified technician something actionable to investigate.

What “up to date” should mean in practice

For a supported Windows installation, a practical definition is: Windows Update has been checked recently, no applicable update is currently offered, no restart is pending, no pause or error is blocking the service, and Update history shows that previously offered updates completed. Even that careful definition is limited to what Microsoft’s service has assessed for that device at that moment. It does not override staged rollout decisions or extend support for an operating system that has reached its end-of-support date.
