If it is missing, verify your exact PC model with its manufacturer before concluding that the computer has no NPU. An NPU can accelerate supported AI tasks, but its presence does not mean every AI feature runs locally or that the PC qualifies as a Copilot+ PC.
How to check for an NPU in Windows
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Performance.
- Look down the left panel for NPU. On supported devices, Task Manager can show information such as utilization, memory, driver version, and physical location. Microsoft’s Windows AI FAQ, updated July 15, 2026, and its Copilot+ PCs developer guide describe this check.
If you see the NPU panel, Windows recognizes an NPU on the system. If you do not, check the manufacturer’s specifications or support page for the exact PC model. Task Manager is a useful first check, but an absent entry alone does not establish that the hardware lacks an NPU; there is no universal manufacturer-independent inventory check established for every Windows configuration.

Use Windows Studio Effects as a secondary clue
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Select a camera and look for the Windows Studio Effects section.
If Studio Effects are unavailable, the PC might not have an NPU, but this is not a definitive hardware test. Availability also depends on Windows version, a supported NPU, the manufacturer’s driver, and manufacturer opt-in support. Microsoft’s Windows Studio Effects overview lists Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer (Build 22623.885+) as a prerequisite in that documentation and says the hardware manufacturer must opt in and install the Studio Effects driver.
What an NPU does
An NPU, or neural processing unit, is a processor designed for neural-network and AI workloads. Windows can use it alongside the CPU and GPU. On supported hardware and software, it can accelerate some AI processing on the device, including local inference, real-time translation, image generation, and camera or microphone effects. Having an NPU does not make every AI task run locally or automatically enable every Windows AI feature.

Camera and microphone effects
Windows Studio Effects may offer background blur, eye contact, automatic framing, voice focus, portrait lighting, and creative filters. The available effects depend on the device. Microsoft Support says some NPUs below 40 TOPS can support background effects, standard eye contact, automatic framing, and voice focus; certain other effects are limited to Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs. Camera effects can also affect performance and battery life on some devices. Check Microsoft’s Windows Studio Effects support page for the feature and hardware details relevant to your PC.

Copilot+ PC is a Windows 11 hardware category with an NPU capable of more than 40 TOPS—trillions of operations per second—plus other platform requirements. Microsoft’s developer guide and device examples name Snapdragon X devices, AMD Ryzen AI 300 series, and Intel Core Ultra 200V series as examples. Those families are examples, not an exhaustive list of qualifying models.

Some Windows AI features and APIs can also run on non-Copilot+ PCs, with different hardware paths and requirements. If you are checking whether one particular feature will work, look up that feature’s requirements rather than treating an NPU entry—or the label “AI PC”—as proof of compatibility. What to do if the feature you want is unavailable
- No NPU appears in Task Manager: confirm the exact model’s specifications with the PC maker.
- An NPU appears, but Studio Effects do not: check the camera settings, Windows version, and manufacturer support for the required driver and feature.
- You want a Copilot+ feature: check whether your exact PC meets the NPU threshold and the feature’s additional platform requirements; the mere presence of an NPU is not enough.
- You are comparing PCs: check whether Windows exposes an NPU and its capability, whether the desired feature has a TOPS or Copilot+ requirement, and whether the manufacturer supports it with the necessary driver. An “AI PC” label by itself does not answer those questions.
