The fastest check is in Task Manager. Open Details, add the Architecture column, and inspect the app’s process. ARM64 means that executable is running natively. ARM64 (x64 compatible) identifies a mixed Arm64EC process: some code is native Arm64 while x64 portions are emulated. x86 or x64 means the executable is running through Windows on Arm emulation, not natively.
That label is an important clue, not a complete compatibility audit. The app’s exact version, plugins, helper processes, required hardware and drivers, Windows build, and the workflow you care about can change the result. Use the process check together with the publisher’s support information and a real test of your critical task.

What “native” means on a Snapdragon X PC
Snapdragon X computers run Windows 11 on Arm. Software can execute in three materially different ways:

On Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft includes the Prism emulation system and says it is optimized for Snapdragon, with some performance features specific to Snapdragon X hardware. An older Windows build should not automatically be assumed to have the same Prism behavior. Record the Windows edition and build when you investigate a problem.

“Native” describes the code that is actually compiled for Arm64. It does not mean an application is guaranteed to support every feature on an Arm PC. A native main executable can still call an x64-only plugin, install an unsupported service, or require a kernel driver that has no Arm64 version.
Check an app’s architecture in Task Manager
Task Manager gives you the quickest evidence for the process currently running. Perform this check while the application is open; an installer, launcher and main program can have different architectures.
- Launch the app and leave it open. If you are checking a particular feature, open the part of the app that uses it so its helper process appears.
- Open Task Manager. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or right-click the Start button and choose Task Manager. - Select Details in the left navigation. This view shows individual executable processes rather than only grouped app names.
- If you do not see an architecture field, right-click a column heading such as Name or PID, choose Select columns, and enable Architecture. The wording can vary slightly with the Windows build.
- Find the app’s executable. Check the process name, publisher and, when necessary, the file location so that you do not mistake an updater or crash reporter for the main program.
- Read the value in Architecture. Treat ARM64, ARM64 (x64 compatible), x64 and x86 according to the table above.
How to read ARM64
A plain ARM64 value indicates native Arm64 execution for that process. This is the clearest result you can get from Task Manager, but check child processes if the application uses a browser shell, plug-in host, licensing service or separate renderer. A native front end can still hand work to an emulated component.

Microsoft uses ARM64 (x64 compatible) for an application whose main executable is partly or fully built with Arm64EC. Arm64EC allows native Arm64 code and x64 code to coexist in one process. Native portions can call into x64 portions, which Windows runs through emulation. The label therefore means “mixed,” not “entirely native.”
How to read x86 and x64
An x86 or x64 value means Windows is emulating that user-mode executable. It can still be a perfectly usable application, particularly when the publisher has tested it on Arm, but it does not meet a strict definition of native execution. Emulation also cannot make an unsupported kernel driver work.

Do not stop at the main process
Task Manager reports the process you inspect, not every component installed with the product. A practical check follows the complete workflow:
- Look for child processes that appear when you open a document, start a call, export media, connect a device or enable a plug-in.
- Check background helpers, update services and licensing components. An app can open while one of these fails silently.
- Test the exact plug-ins, extensions, fonts, codecs, templates and scripts your work requires.
- Disconnect and reconnect any scanner, printer, audio interface, security key or other peripheral used by the workflow, then verify that its driver loads.
- Repeat the check after a major app or Windows update if the workflow is business-critical. Compatibility can change as either side evolves.
Task Manager’s Architecture column is evidence about a running executable. It is not an audit of every child process, service, plug-in or driver. If the column is unavailable or unclear on your build, ask the publisher which architecture the exact release supports.
Verify the exact app version and workflow with its publisher
Use the publisher’s support page, release notes or support channel to confirm the details Task Manager cannot show. Ask about the exact version number and Windows 11 on Arm support rather than relying on the product name alone.
Questions worth checking
- Is there an Arm64 build, an Arm64EC build, or only an x86/x64 build?
- Which Windows 11 releases are supported, and does support require version 24H2 or a later build?
- Are all plug-ins, extensions, add-ins and command-line tools supported, or only the main application?
- Does a background service, licensing module, anti-cheat component or security module install a driver?
- Are hardware acceleration, virtualization, codecs, VPN functions, screen capture or accessibility features limited on Arm?
- Which printers, scanners, cameras and other peripherals have tested Arm64 drivers?
Ask for the publisher’s current support statement for the release you intend to deploy. “The installer completes” and “the app launches” are weaker evidence than a successful end-to-end test of the feature you actually need.
Use compatibility lists as leads, not guarantees
Microsoft points readers to Works on WoA, an evolving open-source compatibility list that includes data contributed by Microsoft. It can help you identify whether other users or maintainers have reported an Arm result, but entries can lag behind app updates and may cover only the basic launch experience.

For a critical application, compare the list entry with the publisher’s current documentation and then test on the target Snapdragon X PC. Record the app version, Windows build, connected hardware and the specific operation you tested. A result such as “opens and edits a file” does not establish that every plug-in, export format or device integration works.
Understand the driver boundary
Microsoft Learn states: “Note that emulation only supports user mode code and doesn’t support drivers.” This is the most important limitation when an otherwise functional app controls hardware or integrates deeply with Windows.
Kernel-mode drivers must be built for Arm64. An x86 or x64 driver cannot be rescued by Prism emulation. The app may install and open, yet fail when it tries to use the device or protected service.
Peripherals
For printers, scanners and similar devices, Microsoft’s support guidance requires either a built-in Windows driver or a driver supplied for Arm64. Check the device manufacturer for an Arm-specific installer and instructions. If the manufacturer provides only an x86/x64 kernel driver, expect the dependent feature to be unavailable.
Games and anti-cheat
Some games depend on anti-cheat drivers that were not designed for Windows on Arm. The game executable may appear to run, but sign-in, matchmaking or launch protection can still fail. Confirm Arm support for the game’s anti-cheat component, not just for the game client.

Security, accessibility and Windows customization
Microsoft identifies some third-party antivirus products, accessibility tools, input method editors, Windows-customization utilities and cloud-storage integrations as areas requiring extra care. Verify each component separately, especially if it installs a system service or driver. Windows Fax and Scan is unavailable on a Windows 11 Arm PC.
Check whether the Microsoft Store selected an Arm build
When an app is distributed through the Microsoft Store, Windows can use package architecture information to select a compatible build when the publisher provides one. That does not prove that every downloaded component is Arm64. Open Task Manager after installation and inspect the running process, then review the app’s support documentation for plug-ins and drivers.
If the Store offers multiple architecture packages or the publisher provides a separate Arm64 download, choose the package explicitly identified for Windows on Arm. Keep the version number with your test notes so that an automatic update does not make a later result impossible to reproduce.

If an x86 or x64 app launches but behaves incorrectly, update Windows and the app first. Microsoft continues to improve Windows on Arm emulation, and a newer build may resolve a problem without any per-app change.

- Locate the app’s executable in File Explorer. If you use a shortcut, right-click it, choose Open file location, and identify the actual executable.
- Right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Under Windows on Arm, select Change emulation settings.
- Start with Default. If the application still fails, test one alternative preset at a time and record the result.
- Reopen the app and repeat the failing operation, not merely the launch.
- If a change causes crashes, prevents launch or reduces performance without fixing the feature, return to Default.

These settings are troubleshooting tools, not a way to turn an x64 program into a native Arm64 build. Microsoft warns that changing them can cause crashes or stop an app from launching. Revert to Default when the change worsens behavior.
A repeatable decision process for one app
Use this sequence when deciding whether an application is suitable for a Snapdragon X deployment:
- Identify the environment. Record the Windows 11 edition, build number, Snapdragon X model and app version.
- Inspect the process. Use Task Manager’s Details view and Architecture column while the app and its important features are active.
- Classify execution. Mark the process as native ARM64, mixed ARM64EC, or emulated x86/x64.
- Map dependencies. List plug-ins, helpers, services, codecs, scripts, peripherals and drivers involved in the workflow.
- Check the publisher. Confirm Arm support and the status of every dependency, not just the main executable.
- Check Works on WoA. Use it to find reports and known issues, then verify the current release yourself.
- Run the real task. Open representative files, connect the required devices and perform the operation that matters to you.
- Troubleshoot only if necessary. Update Windows and the app, then test Prism settings one at a time and return to Default if the result deteriorates.
- Document the outcome. Save the architecture label, versions, hardware, tested features and any limitations so another update can be evaluated against the same baseline.
How to report the result accurately
Use precise wording in a purchase decision, support ticket or deployment note. For example:
- “The editor’s main process reports ARM64 on Windows 11 version 24H2; the USB scanner requires an Arm64 driver and was not tested.”
- “The application reports ARM64 (x64 compatible), so it uses a mixture of native Arm64 and emulated x64 code.”
- “The client reports x64 and runs under emulation. Basic document editing works, but the publisher has not confirmed the plug-in used by our workflow.”
- “The game launches, but its anti-cheat driver has no confirmed Arm64 support, so multiplayer compatibility is unresolved.”
Avoid saying simply “the app is compatible” when you have checked only the process architecture. Compatibility is a combination of executable architecture, Windows build, app release, dependencies, drivers and the specific task you need to complete.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing launch with native execution: an x64 app can open successfully under emulation.
- Calling ARM64 (x64 compatible) fully native: Arm64EC is mixed by design.
- Checking only the installer: installers and launchers can use a different architecture from the application.
- Ignoring kernel drivers: emulation covers user-mode code, not x86/x64 drivers.
- Assuming an old report remains current: Windows and app updates can change support.
- Testing only a blank document: plug-ins, exports, hardware acceleration and peripherals often expose the real limitation.
- Treating a compatibility list as certification: a community entry is a useful lead, not a guarantee for your version and workflow.
- Changing Prism presets indiscriminately: stricter settings can reduce performance or stop an app from launching.
What you can conclude from the check
If Task Manager shows ARM64 and your publisher and workflow checks pass, you have strong evidence that the main executable is native on the Snapdragon X PC. If it shows ARM64 (x64 compatible), expect a hybrid process and evaluate performance and feature support in context. If it shows x86 or x64, the app is emulated; it may still be useful, but native performance is not established and any driver-dependent feature needs separate Arm64 confirmation.
For important work, the reliable answer is therefore not a single label. It is the combination of the architecture value, the exact Windows and app versions, publisher guidance, driver availability and a successful test of the workflow you intend to use.
