How to Check Whether Your Wi‑Fi Uses 802.11b or Another Legacy Mode

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find out whether your device is currently using 802.11b, inspect the active connection’s reported 802.11 protocol or radio type. On Windows 10 and 11, open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run netsh wlan show interfaces. On macOS, Option-click the Wi‑Fi icon in the menu bar and read the connection details. Android menus vary by phone and Android release; use the connected network’s details or the router’s per-device client information when the phone does not show a standard.

Do not diagnose 802.11b from an internet speed test, a low link-rate number, or a list of standards supported by the adapter or router. Those values describe performance, capability, or configuration—not necessarily the protocol negotiated by the connection you are using now.

What you need to identify

“Is my Wi‑Fi using 802.11b?” normally means: which 802.11 protocol is negotiated by the device and access point for the connection that is active right now? Look for a field labelled 802.11 protocol, radio type, Wi‑Fi standard, or a similar term that is attached to the current interface or connected client.

  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Current mode: the protocol used by the active association between your device and the access point. This is the value that answers the title’s question.
  • Supported modes: standards that an adapter or router could use. A capability list does not prove that any one of those standards is active.
  • Allowed network modes: standards enabled in the access point’s wireless settings. This describes network configuration, not the mode negotiated by every client.
  • Scan result: information advertised by a visible access point. A scan can show a neighboring network rather than the network your device joined.
  • Link speed or transmit rate: a negotiated physical-link rate. It is not itself an 802.11 protocol label and is not the same as application or internet throughput.

The procedure below starts with the device that is connected, then uses the router as a fallback when the client operating system does not expose the standard clearly.

Check the active connection in Windows 10 or Windows 11

1. Open a command window

Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal while the computer is connected to the Wi‑Fi network you want to examine. Microsoft specifies an elevated command prompt for diagnostic collection, so use Run as administrator if you are gathering a complete diagnostic report. The interface query itself is read-only.

2. Display the current interface

  1. At the prompt, enter netsh wlan show interfaces and press Enter.
  2. If more than one wireless interface is listed, find the one whose state is connected and whose SSID matches the network you are testing.
  3. Read the current-connection fields in that interface block. Depending on the Windows release and adapter driver, the output can include a radio-type or equivalent protocol field, along with SSID, channel, signal, receive rate, and transmit rate.
  4. If the radio-type field explicitly says 802.11b, that is evidence that this active interface is associated using 802.11b. If it names another 802.11 type, that is the current mode reported by Windows.

Output varies with the wireless driver and Windows version. If the command does not print a radio type, do not infer one from the speed fields. Record the fields that are present and use the router’s connected-client view or the support path for the computer or adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Separate capability from current use

To see what the adapter supports, run:

netsh wlan show drivers

Inspect the list of supported radio types. This answers “what can this adapter use?” rather than “what is it using now?” A computer may support several generations of Wi‑Fi while negotiating only one of them with a particular access point, band, channel, signal condition, or security configuration.

4. Use a scan only for nearby-network diagnostics

Windows can list visible access points with additional BSSID information:

netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid

The result can include each visible BSSID, signal level, channel, and a radio-type field. Use it to investigate what nearby access points advertise. Do not treat a line in this scan as the mode of your active connection unless it is clearly the BSSID and network you are actually joined to; a neighboring access point can appear in the same output.

How to document a Windows result

Save the SSID, connected interface name, reported radio type, band or channel, and receive/transmit rates. Also note the Windows edition, version, and wireless-driver version if the result is ambiguous. Those details help support staff distinguish a missing field from a genuine legacy-mode association.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the active connection on macOS

Use the Wi‑Fi status menu

  1. Connect the Mac to the network you want to test.
  2. Hold the Option key and click the Wi‑Fi status icon in the menu bar.
  3. In the expanded connection details below the network name, find the entry for the 802.11 protocol.

Apple’s diagnostic menu can also show the band or frequency, channel, security standard, IP address, and router address. The protocol entry is the relevant one for deciding whether the current association is 802.11b or another standard.

Do not use the Mac model’s specification as the answer

A Mac model specification can list several Wi‑Fi standards that the hardware supports. That is a capability description. The Option-click connection panel describes the protocol in use by the current association. If the two lists appear to differ, the connection detail takes priority for this question.

If the protocol line is absent

Write down the network name, frequency or band, channel, security type, and any displayed transmit or link-rate value. Then check the access point’s connected-client record. macOS menu labels and available fields can change between releases, so include the macOS version when asking for help rather than guessing from a rate number.

Check on Android phones and tablets

Start with the connected network’s details

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Network & internet, Connections, or Wi‑Fi, depending on the manufacturer.
  3. Tap the network marked connected, or open its gear/details button.
  4. Look for a field named Wi‑Fi standard, Wi‑Fi protocol, PHY mode, or Radio type.

The exact wording and location depend on the phone maker, Android release, and system skin. Some devices show a standard explicitly; others show only network name, frequency, security, IP information, and link speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand what Android exposes

Android’s WifiInfo platform API includes a method for obtaining the connection’s Wi‑Fi standard. That API capability does not guarantee that a manufacturer will display the value in the ordinary Settings application. A missing menu item is therefore not evidence that the phone is using 802.11b.

Use the router as the Android fallback

If the phone’s network details do not name a standard, sign in to the wireless router or access point and open its connected-device or client list. Locate the phone by hostname, MAC address, or current IP address, select its details, and look for a per-client protocol, mode, or radio-type field. Keep the phone connected while checking so that the record corresponds to the current association.

Router labels vary by vendor and firmware. Some systems show a standard such as 802.11b; others use a broader mode label or omit the field. If there is no explicit per-client value, record the phone model, Android version, access-point model and firmware, band, channel, and displayed link rate for support.

Check from the router or access point

Find the current client record

  1. Open the router’s official management app or administration page.
  2. Go to Connected devices, Clients, Attached devices, or the equivalent list.
  3. Identify the device you are testing using its name, IP address, or MAC address. If the same device appears on more than one band, select the entry that is currently active.
  4. Open the individual client details and look for protocol, radio type, PHY mode, or Wi‑Fi standard.

A per-client field is the router-side equivalent of Windows’ active-interface result or macOS’s connection panel. It reports what that client negotiated, when the firmware provides the information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse wireless settings with client status

The router’s radio settings may contain options such as legacy, mixed, or allowed 802.11 standards. Those settings tell you which modes the network permits. They do not establish which one a particular phone, computer, or television negotiated. To answer the current-mode question, use the individual client record.

When a device moves between bands

A dual-band network can show separate client entries or a changing channel as a device roams. Check the client record immediately after confirming the device is connected, and note the band and channel alongside the protocol. A protocol value without the associated client identity can be misleading when several devices have similar names.

How to interpret the fields you find

Displayed information What it tells you Does it prove the current 802.11b mode?
802.11 protocol or radio type on the active interface/client The standard negotiated by the connection being inspected. Yes, when the field is explicitly tied to the connected interface or client.
Supported radio types Standards the adapter can use. No. It is a capability list.
Router wireless-mode or allowed-standard setting Standards the access point permits on that radio. No. A permitted mode is not necessarily the mode used by every client.
Radio type in netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid Information advertised by a visible BSSID. Only if you have verified that the BSSID is the network and access point your device joined; otherwise it may be a neighboring network.
Link speed, receive rate, or transmit rate A negotiated physical-link rate affected by device capability and connection quality. No. It is not an 802.11 protocol label.
Internet speed-test result Application throughput under the conditions of that test. No. Wireless overhead and other network conditions affect it.

If a Windows or router screen says 802.11b, verify that the label sits inside the currently connected interface or the selected client’s details. A standalone 802.11b entry in a supported-mode list or scan output answers a different question.

Why a low speed does not prove 802.11b

Link rate is influenced by signal quality, interference, channel conditions, antenna configuration, client capability, access-point capability, and other connection parameters. Application throughput is lower or different again because wireless protocols, encryption, contention, retransmissions, and the wider network add overhead. A slow download can therefore occur while the connection is using a newer protocol, and a higher displayed rate does not by itself identify the protocol.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not convert a rate shown in megabits per second into an 802.11 standard. The rate is useful context when troubleshooting, but only an explicit protocol or radio-type field can answer whether the active association is 802.11b.

Troubleshooting when no standard is shown

Confirm that you are examining the active connection

  • Check that the device is connected rather than merely scanning for networks.
  • Match the SSID and, where available, BSSID, band, and channel to the network you intend to test.
  • If multiple Wi‑Fi adapters are enabled, identify the interface carrying the connection.
  • Refresh the client list after reconnecting; a stale router entry may describe an earlier association.

Separate missing data from a legacy association

An operating system or driver can omit the protocol field even when the connection is healthy. Treat “not displayed” as an unavailable value, not as proof of 802.11b. Use a second source—the router’s per-client page, another administrative view, or the platform’s documented diagnostic output—before drawing a conclusion.

Record a useful support packet

When the protocol cannot be established, collect:

  • Device model and operating-system version.
  • Wireless-adapter model and driver version, when available.
  • Access-point or router model and firmware version.
  • SSID, band or frequency, channel, security standard, signal level, and displayed receive/transmit or link rate.
  • The exact command output or a screenshot of the connection-details panel, with passwords and public addresses removed.

Give those details to the device or router support channel. They let support determine whether the interface simply lacks a display field, whether a driver is suppressing it, or whether the client really negotiated a legacy mode.

Check after a controlled reconnect

  1. Disconnect the device from the network.
  2. Reconnect to the intended SSID and wait until the connection is fully established.
  3. Immediately run the Windows command, open the macOS Option-click panel, or refresh the router client page.
  4. Compare the protocol field with the current band, channel, and client identity.

This avoids reporting a value from a previous connection or from a different access point with a similar name.

A practical cross-platform workflow

Use this order when you need a defensible answer rather than a guess:

Best Value
TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  1. Inspect the client first. Windows provides netsh wlan show interfaces; macOS provides the Option-click Wi‑Fi details; Android may expose a standard in the connected network’s settings.
  2. Verify the field’s meaning. Confirm that it describes the current interface or association, not supported modes, router policy, a scan result, or link speed.
  3. Use the access point as a fallback. Open the connected-client record and match the device by name, address, band, or channel.
  4. Document uncertainty precisely. If no explicit standard is available, say that the protocol is not exposed and provide the model, software versions, band, channel, and rate instead of labeling the connection 802.11b.

Quick comparison of the available checks

Where you check Path or command Best use Main limitation
Windows current interface netsh wlan show interfaces Current connection and, when provided, its radio type. Fields depend on Windows version and adapter driver.
Windows adapter capability netsh wlan show drivers Supported radio types. Does not identify the negotiated mode.
Windows nearby-network scan netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid BSSID, signal, channel, and advertised radio type for visible access points. May describe a neighboring network rather than the active one.
macOS connection details Option-click the Wi‑Fi menu Current 802.11 protocol plus band, channel, security, and addressing details. Menu contents vary by macOS release.
Android connected-network page Settings > Network & internet or Wi‑Fi Current network details when the manufacturer exposes the standard. Path and available fields vary by phone and Android version.
Router client list Management page or app > connected clients/devices Per-client protocol when the firmware reports it; useful for Android and other clients with limited diagnostics. Labels and fields are vendor- and firmware-specific.

What a reliable conclusion looks like

A reliable conclusion names the device and the evidence field: for example, “The connected Windows interface reports radio type 802.11b,” or “The router’s connected-client record reports 802.11b for the phone.” If the only evidence is a low throughput result, a low link rate, a supported-mode list, or a router setting that allows legacy standards, the correct conclusion is that 802.11b has not been established.

That distinction matters when troubleshooting compatibility or performance. It prevents you from changing router settings, replacing hardware, or blaming a legacy protocol before confirming what the active connection is actually using.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a low Wi‑Fi speed prove that I am using 802.11b?

No. Link rate and real throughput are affected by signal quality, device capability, wireless overhead, interference, and other conditions. Confirm the protocol with an explicit active-connection field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does “802.11b” in my adapter’s supported list mean it is currently connected that way?

No. A supported-mode list describes capability. Use the active interface or per-client connection details to identify the negotiated protocol.

Why does Android show speed but not the Wi‑Fi standard?

Android’s platform API can provide a Wi‑Fi standard, but manufacturers do not all expose that value in the Settings interface. Check the router’s connected-client details if the phone omits it.

What should I do if Windows shows no radio type?

Verify the connected interface, note the available fields and driver version, then check the router’s client record. Do not infer 802.11b from the receive/transmit rate.
