How to Check Whether Your TV Supports the Soundbar Features You Want

The reliable way to check soundbar compatibility is to identify the exact model numbers, inspect the labels beside the TV’s HDMI sockets, and then compare both manuals. Look specifically for an HDMI port marked ARC or eARC; other HDMI inputs may not return audio at all. To use eARC, the TV and soundbar must both support eARC, and the source, programme and audio settings must also provide the format you want. If ARC or eARC is unavailable, optical audio can work, but it usually gives up HDMI control features and may support fewer high-bitrate formats.

This model-by-model check answers the practical questions: “Does my TV support eARC?”, “How do I know if my HDMI port supports ARC?” and “Will my TV pass Dolby Atmos to a soundbar?”

Start with the exact TV and soundbar models

Do not rely on a product family name, a retailer listing or the fact that a television has several HDMI ports. Write down the full model number from the TV’s rear label, settings menu or original paperwork, then do the same for the soundbar. Regional versions can have different sockets and audio capabilities even when the marketing name is similar.

Open the manufacturer’s support page for each exact model and download its user guide and specifications. Search those documents for ARC, eARC, audio return channel, optical, pass-through, Dolby Atmos and the audio formats you care about. Sony’s instructions, for example, warn that a television can have multiple HDMI ports while only one supports ARC or eARC: its soundbar connection guide shows why the port label and model documentation both matter.

Find the TV port that can return audio

Stand in front of the TV and read the tiny labels printed beside every HDMI socket. The correct socket normally says HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. Some sets identify it as “HDMI 3 (eARC)” or place the abbreviation inside the on-screen input menu. Only that labelled port should be connected to the soundbar’s TV-facing HDMI output.

  • ARC label: the port can send the TV’s audio back to a compatible soundbar using HDMI.
  • eARC label: the port supports the newer, higher-bandwidth return channel, subject to the TV’s format and settings support.
  • No ARC/eARC label: assume that HDMI socket is an input only unless the manual explicitly says otherwise.
  • Several HDMI sockets: do not assume they are equivalent. A set may provide ARC/eARC on one port and ordinary inputs on the others.

Also locate the TV’s optical output, usually labelled Digital Audio Out (Optical). It is a useful fallback, but its presence does not tell you which HDMI features the TV supports.

Check the soundbar’s TV connection

Soundbars often have two HDMI sockets with different jobs. The one labelled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC), HDMI OUT (eARC) or similar is the return-channel connection to the television. A socket labelled HDMI IN is for a player or console and is not normally the TV link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the soundbar manual to verify whether its TV-facing output supports ARC, eARC or both. A soundbar that supports ARC only cannot become an eARC device when connected to an eARC television; the link operates at ARC capability. Conversely, an eARC soundbar connected to an ARC-only TV is limited by the TV.

What ARC and eARC actually provide

ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends sound from the TV to the soundbar over the same HDMI cable used for the connection. It can remove the need for a separate optical lead. Sony describes ARC as connecting a TV and audio system “with a single High Speed HDMI® cable” and eliminating an additional composite or optical cable in its support explanation: Sony’s ARC overview.

ARC can also carry HDMI control commands. When the TV and soundbar implement the relevant control feature, the TV remote may adjust soundbar volume and the devices may switch on or off together. The exact behaviour depends on both models and on settings such as HDMI-CEC, which manufacturers may give different names.

eARC is the newer return channel. It provides more bandwidth and supports additional high-bitrate formats. Sony publishes a technical ceiling of up to 37 Mbs for eARC data transfer; that is a manufacturer-published figure, not an independent measurement. Its eARC documentation lists uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 audio, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD among the formats eARC can carry when the connected equipment and content support them: Sony’s eARC support page.

Connection What it can do What must match Typical limitations
HDMI eARC Returns TV audio with the greatest bandwidth of these three options; can carry supported lossless and object-based formats. TV eARC port, soundbar eARC output, compatible HDMI cable, source/content and correct settings. eARC on only one end falls back to the lower capability; format support remains model-specific.
HDMI ARC Returns TV audio and can enable HDMI volume, power and input-control functions. TV ARC/eARC port, soundbar ARC/eARC output and HDMI-CEC settings where control is desired. Lower bandwidth than eARC; the available formats depend on both devices and the TV’s output options.
Optical digital audio Sends digital TV audio through an optical cable when HDMI return is unavailable. Optical output on the TV and optical input on the soundbar; matching format settings. Does not provide HDMI-dependent power interlock or TV-remote volume control, and format support is model-dependent.

The connection type alone never guarantees Dolby Atmos or another format. The TV, soundbar, source device, app or disc, and selected audio output mode all have to support it.

  • BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices

Use this seven-step compatibility check

  1. Record both full model numbers. Capture the complete TV and soundbar identifiers, including regional suffixes. Use those identifiers in the manufacturer’s manual and specifications search.
  2. Inspect every TV HDMI label. Mark the single socket labelled ARC or eARC. If the labels are unclear, confirm the port number in the TV manual rather than guessing.
  3. Inspect the soundbar sockets. Identify the TV-facing HDMI OUT and check whether it is ARC, eARC or ordinary HDMI. Do not connect the TV to an HDMI IN unless the manual specifically describes that arrangement.
  4. Read the TV audio-output section. Check the selectable digital-audio modes, pass-through options and lists of supported formats. Look for separate instructions for built-in apps and HDMI-connected devices.
  5. Read the soundbar format list. Confirm that the bar itself decodes or accepts the format you want. An eARC port does not automatically mean Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or lossless Dolby TrueHD support.
  6. Trace the source. For a streaming app running on the TV, the TV app is the source. For a disc player or console, determine whether its signal goes into the TV first or directly into the soundbar. Verify the source output setting and that the programme, game or disc contains the desired soundtrack.
  7. Choose the cable and connect. Use a cable class recommended by the manufacturers. Sony recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for eARC data transfer; its model-specific guidance may call for a higher-bandwidth cable for some external-device configurations. Connect the TV’s labelled ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s TV-facing ARC/eARC output, then select the TV’s external-speaker or HDMI-audio option.

After connecting, play a known source and check the soundbar’s front-panel information or app for the incoming format. A generic “surround” indicator does not prove that a lossless or object-based track is being received.

Does my TV support eARC?

Your TV supports eARC only if the exact model documentation identifies an eARC-capable HDMI port. A general statement such as “supports HDMI 2.1” is not sufficient by itself, because manufacturers can implement different features on different ports. The soundbar must also have an eARC-capable TV output; otherwise the system cannot use eARC.

Once both ports are confirmed, check the TV menu for an eARC mode or a digital-audio output setting that allows high-bitrate or pass-through audio. Some televisions offer an “eARC mode” switch, while others enable it automatically. The names and available choices vary by model, so follow the manual for your set.

Will your TV pass Dolby Atmos?

First identify the signal path. Atmos from a built-in TV streaming app is generated inside the television and must be returned through the TV’s ARC/eARC or optical output. Atmos from a console or disc player connected to a TV HDMI input must be passed through by the TV, which may require a pass-through setting and may be limited by the TV’s supported formats.

A different route is to connect the external player directly to an HDMI input on the soundbar, then connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV. Sony documents this arrangement for Atmos-capable systems: its connection guidance explains that a player can feed the soundbar directly when the TV cannot pass the required signal. This works only when the soundbar’s HDMI input accepts the source’s video and audio formats. Some system sounds or TV app audio may not travel back through that arrangement, so confirm the limitations in both manuals.

For every Atmos test, verify four separate conditions:

  • The soundbar lists Dolby Atmos as a supported input or decoding format.
  • The TV return path is eARC, or the ARC/optical implementation explicitly supports the Atmos format used by your source.
  • The player, app, game or disc is actually outputting an Atmos soundtrack rather than stereo or a lower-bandwidth mix.
  • The TV, player and soundbar menus are set to bitstream, pass-through or the manufacturer’s equivalent option instead of forced PCM stereo, where appropriate.

When optical audio is the right fallback

Optical is useful when the TV has no ARC/eARC port, when the HDMI return channel is unreliable, or when an older soundbar has only an optical input. Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input and select optical or digital audio on the bar. Sony lists optical as an alternative connection in its soundbar instructions: the connection guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optical is not a hidden way to obtain eARC bandwidth. Its maximum formats depend on the specific TV and soundbar, and an optical-only link does not carry HDMI control functions such as power interlock and TV-remote volume control. You may need to adjust volume with the soundbar remote, use an infrared-learning feature, or enable a separate control method if the products provide one.

  • BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices

Check the TV’s digital-audio menu when using optical. A setting such as PCM can improve compatibility with basic soundbars, while a bitstream or pass-through option may be necessary for a supported compressed surround format. Use the exact choices listed in the TV and soundbar manuals; do not assume that one setting works for every model.

Cable and accessory checks

A cable cannot add ARC or eARC to a port that lacks it. It can, however, prevent an otherwise compatible connection from failing. Inspect the cable for damage, use a short known-good cable during diagnosis, and avoid routing the soundbar through an HDMI switch or adapter until the direct connection works.

For eARC, Sony recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for data transfer. Some high-quality external-device configurations have higher bandwidth requirements, so follow the cable class specified for the particular TV, player and soundbar. Check the box contents before buying another cable; a suitable lead may already be included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot a silent or limited connection

No sound over HDMI

  • Recheck that the cable runs from the TV’s labelled ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC), not to an HDMI IN.
  • Turn on the TV’s external-speaker, ARC/eARC and HDMI-control settings as described in its manual.
  • Set the soundbar input to TV, ARC or eARC rather than an unrelated source.
  • Power off both devices, unplug them briefly, reconnect the HDMI cable and power the TV on before the soundbar if the manual recommends that sequence.
  • Test a different cable and remove switches, receivers or adapters from the path.

Sound works but only in stereo

  • Check whether the app, disc or game actually supplies a multichannel or Atmos track.
  • Inspect the TV’s digital-audio output and pass-through setting; forced PCM may downmix the signal.
  • Confirm that the soundbar supports the selected format and that both ends are using the intended ARC or eARC mode.
  • For an external player, compare a direct-to-soundbar HDMI connection with a player-to-TV connection. The TV may not pass the format even though the soundbar can accept it directly.

Volume and power control do not work

These functions depend on HDMI control, not merely on audio. Enable the TV’s HDMI-CEC feature and the soundbar’s corresponding control option, then check each product’s manual for its brand-specific name. Optical connections cannot provide those HDMI-dependent commands, so a separate remote or control method may be required.

eARC appears in the menu but high-quality audio still fails

Confirm that the soundbar is also eARC-capable, that the cable meets the manufacturers’ guidance, and that the source and content contain the format. eARC on the TV alone does not upgrade an ARC-only soundbar. The TV may also treat built-in apps and HDMI inputs differently, so test each source path separately.

Choose the connection based on the feature you need

Your priority Minimum connection to investigate Checks that decide the result
One remote for volume and power HDMI ARC or eARC Both devices’ HDMI-control support and enabled settings.
Highest-bandwidth TV audio HDMI eARC eARC on both devices, suitable cable, supported source and format.
Basic TV sound from an older set Optical, if available on both products Supported optical formats and willingness to use separate controls.
Atmos from a disc player or console when the TV is limited Player into the soundbar’s HDMI IN Soundbar input format and video pass-through support, plus the TV connection for video.
Simple installation with no extra cable ARC or eARC Correctly labelled ports and an appropriate HDMI cable.

The practical verdict

Compatibility is a property of the complete chain, not of a television’s HDMI count or a soundbar’s headline feature. Match the exact TV ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s TV-facing output, confirm the same capability in both manuals, trace each source device and verify the format settings. Use optical when necessary, accepting its control and format trade-offs. If you need the widest format support, eARC on both ends is the target; if either device lacks it, plan around the lower capability rather than expecting a cable or setting to create eARC.
