These are different capabilities.
Identify the sender (computer, phone, browser and app), the receiving device (TV model or streaming player), and whether you want to send one video, a browser tab or the entire screen. Then run the matching test below.

What “browser video casting” can mean
People use casting as a general term for several technologies. A device can support one and lack the others, so seeing a cast icon in one situation does not prove that every browser video will work.
| What you want to send | Typical sender | Receiver technology | What the check proves |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Chrome tab or computer screen | Chrome on Windows, ChromeOS, macOS or Linux | Google Cast | The receiver can be discovered by Chrome on that network. |
| A compatible web video | Safari on Mac or an iPhone/iPad video app | Apple AirPlay | The player and receiver support AirPlay for that video. |
| Playback from a mobile service app | The service’s iOS or Android app | The app’s own casting protocol, such as a Roku target | That particular app can send playback to that receiver. |
| The entire phone or computer display | A device with screen-mirroring support | Miracast, AirPlay or a manufacturer-specific feature | The operating system can mirror its screen; it does not guarantee browser-player compatibility. |
A browser does not have to run on the television for the first three methods. The sender may fetch or display the video while the TV or player receives it. Conversely, a smart-TV browser does not automatically mean the TV can receive a Chrome tab or AirPlay video.

Start with the Chrome receiver test
If your source is a computer running Chrome, this is the clearest practical test for Google Cast support.
- Connect the computer and TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network. Use the network you actually intend to use; a guest network or isolated wireless network can prevent discovery.
- Turn on the TV or streaming device and wait until its home screen is available.
- Update Chrome if an update is offered.
- In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and choose Cast, save, and share > Cast.
- Look for the receiver name in the device list. Select it to test a tab, or use the available source controls to choose a tab or screen.
If the TV or player appears, it is discoverable as a Google Cast receiver from that computer on that network. Google lists Chromecast, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer (4K), Chromecast Ultra and televisions with Google Cast as receiver classes for Chrome tab or screen casting.
Google’s Chrome Help documentation says, “You can cast most web content.” That is not a promise that every player works. Google specifically identifies Silverlight, QuickTime and VLC plugins as examples that will not work with this method. A website can also use a video format or protected player that does not cooperate with tab casting.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If no Google Cast receiver appears
- Confirm that the receiver is powered, finished starting and connected to Wi-Fi.
- Check the computer’s Wi-Fi name against the TV or player’s network name. Being connected to the same router is not enough if one device is on an isolated guest network.
- Install the current Chrome release and reopen the Cast menu.
- On a Mac running macOS 15 or later, allow Chrome access to the local network in macOS privacy settings, then restart Chrome.
- Restart the receiver, router and computer if discovery remains absent.
An absent receiver after these checks means that Google Cast discovery is not available from that computer and network at that moment. It does not tell you whether the device supports AirPlay, Miracast or an individual app’s casting feature.
Check Safari and AirPlay for Apple devices
Safari uses a different path. On a Mac, open the web video and inspect the video controls for the AirPlay icon. If the icon is present, select it and choose an Apple TV or another available AirPlay receiver.

Apple documents AirPlay video to Apple TV 4K and AirPlay 2-enabled smart TVs. For an iPhone or iPad, both the mobile device and receiver should have Wi-Fi enabled and be connected to the same network. This is an AirPlay test, not a Google Cast test; a TV can pass one and fail the other.
When the AirPlay icon is missing
Do not immediately conclude that the TV lacks AirPlay. Apple notes that some apps and video services do not support AirPlay, so the limitation may belong to the website or player. Try another known-compatible video, check the app’s own support information, and consult the television’s model manual or settings for AirPlay support.
For an AirPlay troubleshooting pass, Apple recommends checking that both devices are powered, updated, nearby and on the same Wi-Fi network, and that the receiver is configured to allow AirPlay. Restarting both devices is also part of Apple’s guidance. A screen-mirroring control may still be available even when a particular website refuses AirPlay video; mirroring and sending a video stream are separate tests.
Test a Roku device without confusing app casting with browser casting
Roku’s documented casting route is app-specific. Install the supported service app on both the phone or tablet and the Roku player or Roku TV. Start playback in the mobile app, tap its cast control, and select the Roku from the list.
This confirms that the particular app can send its playback to that Roku. It does not confirm that Roku accepts an arbitrary Chrome tab. Roku also states that its streaming players and Roku TVs do not provide an internet browser for browsing websites on the television. Therefore, the absence of a built-in browser is not evidence that app casting is unavailable, and the presence of an app cast button is not evidence of general browser casting.

Roku screen mirroring is a separate capability
Roku documents screen mirroring separately from app casting. Compatible Apple devices use AirPlay on compatible Roku models. Mirroring from Android and Windows is limited to devices that support the required Roku and operating-system features. A model-specific compatibility check is necessary; “Roku” by itself is not a sufficient answer.
When a Roku does not appear in an app, verify that the same account or supported app version is being used where required, that the app is installed on both ends, and that the phone and Roku share the same Wi-Fi network. If the app has no cast control, Roku discovery cannot add one; the service may simply not support casting.
Check Fire TV for Miracast screen mirroring
Amazon’s Fire TV check concerns whole-screen mirroring through Miracast, not native Google Cast reception. On the Fire TV, open Settings > Display & Sounds and look for Enable Display Mirroring.
- If Enable Display Mirroring is present, that Fire TV exposes the documented mirroring path.
- If the option is absent, Amazon says that Fire TV does not support this screen-mirroring function.
- The sending computer or phone must also support Miracast or Windows Wireless Display.
- Connect the sender and Fire TV to the same Wi-Fi network before attempting the connection.
Amazon lists iOS and macOS as unsupported senders for this Miracast route. It also identifies Android versions earlier than 4.2 and devices without Miracast or Windows Wireless Display support as unsupported cases. A compatible Android or Windows sender can therefore mirror a browser window, but that is still a screen image rather than a guarantee that every website video will play correctly.
These instructions do not establish that every Fire TV is a Google Cast receiver, and they do not establish universal playback for protected or unusual web video. Use the Google Cast or AirPlay tests when those are the technologies your sender requires.

Use the goal, not the device name, to choose a test
| Your goal | Best first test | What success means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Send a Chrome tab from a computer | Chrome menu: Cast, save, and share > Cast | A Google Cast receiver is discoverable. | AirPlay, Miracast or every website player will work. |
| Send a Safari web video from a Mac | Look for AirPlay in the video controls. | The player offers AirPlay to a listed receiver. | Other sites or apps support AirPlay. |
| Play a service from a phone | Use that service’s in-app cast button. | The app supports the selected receiver. | Arbitrary browser tabs can be sent. |
| Show everything on a phone or computer | Use the operating system’s screen-mirroring control and the receiver’s matching feature. | The sender and receiver negotiate a mirroring session. | A direct, high-quality video stream or protected content will work. |
For a purchase decision, compare the exact TV or player model, not just the platform name. Record the sender and browser you use, the receiver protocol it supports, whether both devices can share one Wi-Fi network, and whether you need a single supported video or the entire screen.
Check the website and video itself
A receiver can be fully compatible while a particular video fails. Browser casting may be affected by the site’s player, plugins, format, digital-rights restrictions or an app policy. Google’s explicit examples—Silverlight, QuickTime and VLC—show why a general “works with Chrome” statement is too broad.
Test a second video on the same site. If the second video works, the original player or content is likely the limiting factor. Test the same receiver with a different supported site or app to separate a site problem from a network or device problem. For AirPlay, check whether the service documents AirPlay support; Apple notes that some apps omit the feature even when the TV supports it.

Most wireless methods require a strong connection and local discovery. Keep the sender and receiver reasonably close to the access point, avoid guest-network isolation, and make sure the receiver is not asleep or in an input mode that disables its network services.

- Same network: Verify the exact Wi-Fi network name on both devices.
- Local-network permission: On macOS 15 or later, Chrome needs local-network access to find Google Cast receivers.
- Software versions: Update Chrome, the mobile app, the TV or player firmware and the phone or computer operating system.
- Power state: Wake the TV or player fully before opening the sender’s device list.
- Restart sequence: Restart the receiver first, then the sender; reboot the router if neither can discover any receiver.
Discovery failure is different from playback failure. If the receiver appears but playback stops, investigate the website, app, format or content restrictions rather than repeatedly changing Wi-Fi settings.

Use HDMI when wireless support is missing
A wired HDMI connection is a practical fallback when the sender and receiver do not share a compatible wireless protocol. Connect an HDMI cable between the TV and computer, or use the appropriate adapter for a phone, tablet or computer that lacks a full-size HDMI port. A support page from Glo lists an HDMI cable and adapter as a way to connect a TV to a computer, mobile device or tablet for streaming.
Check the sender’s port before buying anything: USB-C, Lightning, Mini DisplayPort and HDMI require different adapters, and some USB-C ports do not carry video. Select the matching HDMI input on the TV, then choose mirror or extend on the computer if necessary.
HDMI supplies a display connection; it does not guarantee that a protected or otherwise unsupported website video will be allowed to play. Content restrictions, adapters and the sender’s operating system can still limit the result.

Before buying a streaming device
- Write down the exact TV model and the sender devices you will use.
- Decide whether you need Chrome tab casting, AirPlay video, an app’s cast button or full-screen mirroring.
- Check the manufacturer documentation for that model and protocol. A platform label such as “smart TV,” “Roku” or “Fire TV” is not enough.
- Confirm that the sender and receiver can use the same Wi-Fi network and that any required local-network permission is available.
- Test the actual website or app, because protocol support does not promise every video.
- Consider HDMI if wireless compatibility is uncertain or if a stable wired connection is acceptable.
A Google TV Streamer (4K) is relevant only when you need a Google Cast receiver; Google lists it among devices that support Chrome tab or screen casting. It is not a universal solution for AirPlay-only, Miracast-only or app-specific requirements. If your existing TV already has Google Cast, buying another receiver may add nothing.
What a successful check tells you
A successful Chrome Cast-list result proves Google Cast discovery from that computer and network. An AirPlay icon proves that the particular player offers AirPlay to an available receiver. An app’s Roku button proves support for that app and Roku combination. Fire TV’s mirroring setting proves that the documented Miracast path is exposed on that model. Treat each result narrowly, then test the exact video you intend to watch.
