Open CrystalDiskInfo, read the SSD’s current and supported values in Transfer Mode, and then compare them with the exact M.2 socket specifications in your motherboard or computer manual. The generation (such as PCIe 3.0) and lane width (such as x2 or x4) are separate parts of the connection, so both must be checked.
What the PCIe reading tells you
An SSD can be capable of one PCIe mode while actually negotiating another. The drive’s advertised maximum describes what the SSD supports under the right platform conditions. The M.2 socket has its own generation and lane wiring. The negotiated link is the mode the drive and platform are using right now. Those are three different facts, and diagnosing a limitation requires comparing all three.

A status such as PCIe 3.0 x2 contains two values. PCIe 3.0 identifies the signaling-generation tier. The x2 identifies the number of lanes currently negotiated. A link reported as PCIe 3.0 x4 uses the same generation but twice the lane width. Microsoft’s PCI Express link-status definitions treat negotiated speed and negotiated width as separate fields, which is why a diagnosis that checks only “PCIe 3.0” can miss a lane-width limitation.

The displayed mode proves the condition of the current connection; it does not, by itself, prove whether the drive, socket, processor platform, firmware configuration or another installed device caused a lower mode. The motherboard manual and the exact installed configuration are needed to explain the result.

The three values you must compare
| Value | Where to find it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Current negotiated mode | CrystalDiskInfo’s Transfer Mode field | The PCIe generation and lane width the SSD is using at the time of the check. |
| SSD supported mode | The supported portion of the same Transfer Mode field | The highest mode CrystalDiskInfo reports for that drive’s interface capability. |
| Socket and platform capability | The official manual for the exact motherboard or computer model | The generation and lane width available from the particular M.2 socket, including lane-sharing conditions. |
Do not substitute a benchmark score for any of these values. A benchmark measures a workload and can be affected by factors outside the PCIe link mode. Use the link-status display to establish the negotiated connection, then use platform documentation to determine why that connection exists.
Before you check the link
Identify the exact SSD and the exact computer or motherboard model before interpreting a result. A board can provide more than one M.2 socket, and those sockets may not have identical wiring. The socket containing the drive is therefore part of the diagnosis; a manual for a similar board or a different revision is not enough.
Have the official board or system manual available. You are looking for the specifications of the installed socket and notes describing shared lanes. Some boards change the operating width of another PCIe slot when a particular M.2 socket is populated. ASUS documents this type of interaction in its guidance on confirming PCIe interface operation mode, but the applicable rule depends on the exact board and socket combination.
No hardware purchase is required for the initial check. The first pass uses diagnostic software and the platform documentation.
Step-by-step: read the negotiated mode in CrystalDiskInfo
- Open CrystalDiskInfo. Start the utility on the computer containing the SSD. The program may list more than one storage device, so do not assume the first drive shown is the one you want.
- Select the target SSD. Use the drive selector in CrystalDiskInfo to choose the M.2 or NVMe drive under investigation. Confirm the model shown by the utility matches the physical drive or the model recorded from your system information.
- Locate Transfer Mode. CrystalDiskInfo documents this field as a current mode followed by a supported mode. Read the complete field rather than copying only the generation label.
- Record the current generation. Write down the first PCIe generation shown for the selected drive, such as PCIe 3.0 or PCIe 4.0. This is the generation currently negotiated between the drive and its connection.
- Record the current lane width. Note the x-value beside the current generation. Values such as x1, x2 and x4 describe lane width. Keep this value attached to the generation; PCIe 3.0 x2 is not equivalent to PCIe 3.0 x4.
- Record the supported mode. Read the second mode in the Transfer Mode field and capture both its generation and lane width. This gives you the software’s reported reference for what the SSD supports, not what the socket necessarily provides.
- Compare the two modes separately. First compare generation with generation, then compare lane width with lane width. A drive can match the supported generation while negotiating fewer lanes, or it can show both a lower generation and fewer lanes.
- Save the wording of the result. Keeping the exact current and supported strings prevents an ambiguous conclusion later. For example, “current PCIe 3.0 x2; supported PCIe 3.0 x4” identifies a width difference that “PCIe 3.0” alone would hide.
- Locate the physical socket in the manual. Find which M.2 connector contains the SSD. Manuals often label several connectors, and the connector name is necessary to match the correct specification table or diagram.
- Check the socket’s documented mode and sharing notes. Verify the socket’s supported PCIe generation and lane width. Read every note about a second M.2 connector, a PCIe expansion slot or another device that may share lanes or disable part of the connection.
- Check the CPU or platform limits. If the socket can support a higher mode than the current reading, confirm that the processor and platform provide the required PCIe generation and lanes. A socket’s physical presence does not guarantee that every platform configuration exposes its maximum capability.
- Classify the result. Decide whether the current and supported values match, whether only generation is lower, whether only width is lower, or whether the utility’s display is incomplete. Use the corresponding diagnostic path below rather than treating every mismatch as a failed SSD.
How to interpret common Transfer Mode results
Current and supported modes match
If CrystalDiskInfo shows the same generation and lane width for current and supported modes, the link is negotiating the mode reported as supported by the utility. This is the expected interface match. It still does not promise that a sequential benchmark will equal a number published for the SSD. Workload type and other system conditions can change benchmark results even when the link mode is correct.

The current generation is lower
A lower current generation means the connection is operating at a lower PCIe tier than the SSD’s reported supported mode. The drive may be installed in a socket with a lower documented generation, the processor or platform may impose that limit, or the link may have negotiated down. Check the exact socket and platform specifications before diagnosing a hardware fault.
For example, a PCIe 4.0-capable SSD showing a PCIe 3.0 current mode is evidence of a PCIe 3.0 connection, not evidence that the SSD has become a PCIe 3.0 drive. The socket’s generation, the CPU/platform capability and the installed configuration determine whether that result is expected.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The current width is lower
A result such as current PCIe 3.0 x2 with supported PCIe 3.0 x4 keeps the generation the same but shows only two negotiated lanes instead of four. Investigate whether the M.2 socket is wired for two lanes, whether the board shares lanes with another connector or expansion slot, and whether the installed devices change the available width.
Do not infer a defect from the x2 value alone. If the manual documents that socket as x2, the reading is consistent with the board. If the manual documents x4 under the present configuration, continue through the platform and firmware checks rather than replacing the SSD immediately.
Both generation and width are lower
When both parts are below the SSD’s supported mode, begin with the socket specification and the platform’s PCIe capability. A lower-generation socket can also have a different lane arrangement, and lane-sharing rules can alter the available width when another device is installed. The two differences should still be recorded separately because they may have different causes.

The utility shows no clear mode
If Transfer Mode is missing, truncated or unclear, use the SSD manufacturer’s management utility if it exposes interface information. Check the system firmware or UEFI information when it reports PCIe link details, and consult the exact platform documentation. Field names and the amount of detail vary among utilities and systems, so one program’s incomplete display is not proof that the link has failed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the motherboard manual to explain the limitation
Find the manual section covering M.2 connectors, storage interfaces or PCIe operation. Match the connector label printed in the board diagram to the connector where the SSD is installed. Then read the generation and lane-width description for that connector.
Pay particular attention to conditional language. A table may describe one socket as supporting a certain mode only when another connector is empty, or it may state that populating an M.2 socket changes the operating width of a separate PCIe slot. Those conditions are part of the socket’s specification, not incidental details.
Next, check the board’s lane-source information. Some lanes can come from the processor and others from the platform chipset; the manual may describe those paths without using the same terminology as CrystalDiskInfo. You do not need to translate the architecture into a benchmark prediction. You need to establish whether the socket can supply the generation and width shown as the SSD’s supported mode under the configuration you actually installed.
Finally, verify the CPU or system model. The same motherboard family can behave differently with different processors or platform generations. Use the exact model information, not a generic product name, when reading the platform capability.

Diagnose the result with a comparison table
| Current Transfer Mode | Supported Transfer Mode | What to investigate first | What the reading establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCIe 3.0 x4 | PCIe 3.0 x4 | Whether benchmark expectations account for the workload and other system factors. | Generation and width match the utility’s supported mode. |
| PCIe 3.0 x2 | PCIe 3.0 x4 | Socket wiring, lane-sharing notes and the installed device configuration. | The current link is using two lanes, even though the utility reports four as supported. |
| PCIe 3.0 x4 | PCIe 4.0 x4 | Socket generation, CPU/platform capability and any negotiated-down condition. | The width is four lanes, but the generation is currently PCIe 3.0. |
| PCIe 3.0 x2 | PCIe 4.0 x4 | Socket generation and wiring first, then platform and lane-sharing conditions. | Both generation and width are below the utility’s supported mode. |
The table describes the link state, not a verdict about the drive’s health. Only documentation for the exact socket and configuration can show whether the state is an expected platform limit.
What to do when the result is lower than expected
Confirm the connector before changing hardware
Recheck the M.2 connector name and compare it with the board diagram. A drive moved between sockets can produce a different mode without any change to the SSD itself. If the computer has several M.2 connectors, document which one is populated before drawing a conclusion.
Review every lane-sharing condition
List the other installed devices mentioned by the manual: additional M.2 drives, PCIe cards or other connectors that share resources. Compare the documented behavior for the current combination with the Transfer Mode result. If removing or relocating a device is being considered, treat that as a configuration test and record the mode before and after the change.
Check platform support
Confirm that the processor and system platform support the generation and lane width you expect at that socket. A board manual can describe a connector’s electrical options while the installed processor limits which option is available. This is why the SSD specification and the socket specification cannot be used in isolation.
Check firmware information without assuming a setting
Enter the system’s firmware or UEFI information only if you are comfortable identifying the relevant PCIe or M.2 status fields. Record what the firmware reports; do not change unrelated settings merely to force a higher label. The purpose of this step is to corroborate the negotiated state and discover platform-specific information that the operating-system utility does not display.
Best Value
Use a second diagnostic source
If the reading remains surprising, compare CrystalDiskInfo with the SSD vendor’s management utility or available UEFI link information. Agreement between tools strengthens confidence in the observed mode. A disagreement means you should rely on the exact field definitions and platform documentation rather than choosing the higher-looking value.
Why advertised throughput and link mode are different
An SSD vendor’s maximum throughput is normally an advertised performance capability, while Transfer Mode reports an interface state. The interface can be fully matched and still produce benchmark results that vary with workload, queue behavior and other system conditions. Conversely, a high benchmark result does not prove that the link is using the SSD’s maximum generation or width.
Use two separate tests for two separate questions. To answer “What link is active?”, read the current generation and lane width. To answer “How fast is this workload?”, run an appropriate benchmark and interpret its result in the context of the workload. Do not use one result as a substitute for the other.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A practical decision checklist
- Have you selected the correct SSD in CrystalDiskInfo?
- Did you record both current and supported Transfer Mode values?
- Did you separate PCIe generation from lane width?
- Did you identify the exact M.2 socket containing the drive?
- Did you read the official manual for that exact motherboard or computer model?
- Did you check whether another M.2 drive, PCIe slot or device shares lanes?
- Did you verify the processor or platform capability?
- Did you distinguish a lower negotiated link from a claim that the SSD is defective?
- If the display was unclear, did you check a vendor utility or UEFI information?
- Did you keep benchmark results separate from the link-status diagnosis?
Which documentation is useful
Crystal Dew World’s “General Information – Crystal Dew World” explains the Transfer Mode field and its current-versus-supported format. ASUS Support’s “PCIE Interface Operation Mode (Speed) Confirmation,” updated May 6, 2026, illustrates how to check interface mode and account for motherboard slot limitations. Microsoft Learn’s “PCI_EXPRESS_LINK_STATUS_REGISTER union (ntddk.h)” defines negotiated link speed and negotiated link width as separate status values. Use these references alongside the manual for your exact platform, because only that manual can describe the wiring and sharing rules of the socket you are using.
When replacement is justified
Consider replacement or repair only after the evidence shows that the socket and platform should provide the expected generation and width, the installed configuration does not explain the lower mode, and the same lower reading persists after checking the relevant firmware and diagnostic information. A lower negotiated mode alone is not enough to identify a defective SSD. It identifies a link condition that still needs a component-and-configuration explanation.
