How to Check Whether Your Sony Xperia Gets Future Android and Security Updates

To check an Xperia’s future-update eligibility, first identify the exact model and its country, region, and carrier version. Then find that model in Sony Support’s current Android-version and security-update table, and compare the listed security-update end date with today. Finally, check the phone’s own software-update screen because operator approval can change when an update appears.

Sony’s table is model- and market-specific. It is the controlling source for the models and dates it lists, not a perpetual promise for every Xperia variant worldwide.

What “eligible for future updates” actually means

There are two separate questions. The first is whether Sony lists another major Android release for your model. The second is how long Sony lists security updates. A phone can receive no further Android version while still receiving security patches, or it can remain usable after its security-support date even though Sony no longer publishes a support promise beyond that date.

Sony’s table shows an Android-version progression and a security-update end date. Treat the end date as the practical cutoff for Sony-published security support. It does not switch the phone off, remove apps, or prevent calls after that day; it tells you when Sony’s published commitment ends.

Eligibility is also not the same as immediate availability. Sony states that Android-version availability depends on the country or region and the operator. A model can be listed for a new Android version while a particular carrier variant is still waiting for approval.

Step 1: identify the exact Xperia before checking support

Do not rely only on the name printed on the box or a retailer listing. Xperia families often contain several generations and carrier editions whose support windows differ.

  1. Open Settings, select About phone, and record the full model name and model number. On some Android builds the entry is under System or About device; use the label shown on your phone.
  2. Write down the country or region where the phone was sold and the mobile operator currently providing service. Sony’s support information is market- and operator-dependent.
  3. Record the installed Android version and the date shown for the Android security update. These values establish the phone’s current state; they do not by themselves prove that another release is promised.
  4. Keep the model generation intact. “Xperia 1 VI,” “Xperia 1 V,” and “Xperia 1 IV” are different support entries, as are “Xperia 10 VI,” “Xperia 10 V,” and “Xperia 10 IV.”

If the phone was imported, the sales region may not match the country where it is now used. Use the model and region associated with the original market when you consult Sony’s table, then use the current operator information to interpret rollout timing.

Step 2: use Sony’s current support table

Open Sony Support’s article What Android version does my Xperia phone have? (Sony article SX243903, modified September 9, 2026). Search within the page for the exact Xperia model you recorded.

  1. Locate the model heading, not merely the product family.
  2. Read the Android versions shown in order. This is the versions Sony lists as delivered or planned for that model at the time of the article.
  3. Read the security-update end date in the same model entry.
  4. Compare that date with the date on which you are making the decision. A date in the past means Sony’s published security-support period has ended; a future date means the model remains inside the listed period.
  5. Save or note the page date. Sony can revise a support table, and a later version should take precedence over an older screenshot or retailer claim.

The table does not provide one universal future-update policy for every Xperia generation worldwide. If your exact model or market is absent, do not infer eligibility from a similarly named phone.

Current Sony Xperia examples

The following entries are the models and dates shown by Sony Support in 2026. The status column applies to October 16, 2026, and is an interpretation of each listed end date rather than a separate Sony statement.

Model Model year Android versions listed Security updates listed through Status on October 16, 2026
Sony Xperia 1 VI 2024 Android 14 → 15 → 16 2028-04-01 Inside the listed security-support period
Sony Xperia 10 VI 2024 Android 14 → 15 → 16 2028-05-01 Inside the listed security-support period
Sony Xperia 1 V 2023 Android 13 → 14 → 15 2026-05-01 Past the listed end date
Sony Xperia 10 V 2023 Android 13 → 14 → 15 2026-06-01 Past the listed end date
Sony Xperia 5 V 2023 Android 13 → 14 → 15 2026-08-01 Past the listed end date
Sony Xperia 1 IV 2022 Android 12 → 13 → 14 2025-05-01 Past the listed end date
Sony Xperia 10 IV 2022 Android 12 → 13 → 14 2025-05-01 Past the listed end date
Sony Xperia 5 IV 2022 Android 12 → 13 → 14 2025-09-01 Past the listed end date

For example, Sony lists the Xperia 1 VI through Android 16 and gives it a security-update end date of April 1, 2028. The Xperia 10 VI is also listed through Android 16, with security updates through May 1, 2028. Those dates do not establish Android 17 eligibility; no Android 17 commitment is shown in the listed progression.

The 2023 models in the table are shown through Android 15. Their listed security dates—May, June, and August 2026—are earlier than October 16, 2026. That means Sony’s published security-support window has ended for those entries, even though the phones may continue to operate.

Step 3: check what is installed on the phone

Use the device itself as a second check. On Xperia phones, open Settings → System → Software update (the wording can vary by Android build), then choose the option to check for updates. Sony’s Xperia 1 VI Help Guide documents updating through the device’s update mechanism and notes that an operator can affect availability.

  • If the screen says the software is up to date but Sony lists a newer Android version, the release may not yet be approved for your operator or region.
  • If the phone offers an update, compare its Android version and security-patch date with Sony’s model entry before installing.
  • Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network, keep the battery charged, and leave adequate storage for the download. These are practical installation precautions; they do not change the model’s eligibility.
  • After installation, return to the update screen and About phone page to confirm the new Android version and security-patch date.

Do not use a third-party firmware package to force a release intended for another region. A different regional build can have different modem, regulatory, or carrier behavior, and it is not evidence that Sony supports that installation on your variant.

Why country, region, and carrier matter

Sony’s wording is explicit: “The availability of the following phones and Android versions depends on the country/region and/or the operator.” That qualification applies to rollout availability, even when the model appears in Sony’s general table.

Imported phones

An imported Xperia can display a model name that is also sold locally while following the update schedule of its original sales region. Check the model number and the region associated with the handset rather than assuming that the local Sony schedule applies.

Carrier editions

Operators may test, approve, or sequence updates separately. Two otherwise identical phones on different networks can therefore show different update screens on the same day. A delay does not automatically mean the model has lost eligibility.

Changing operators

Moving a SIM to another network does not rewrite Sony’s support end date. It can, however, change the timing or availability of a particular release. For a decisive answer, keep both the Sony model entry and the phone’s current operator in view.

How to answer “Will my Xperia get Android 17?”

Look at the Android progression for the exact model. Sony’s listed entries above stop at Android 16 for the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI, and at Android 15 for the 2023 models. A listed progression is evidence of what Sony has published; the absence of Android 17 from that progression is not a promise that Android 17 will never arrive, but it is not support for claiming that it will.

Do not extrapolate from the phone’s launch year, processor, or another Xperia family. Sony’s support page is the controlling reference for the model, market, and date shown there. Recheck it when Sony publishes a revision rather than treating an online prediction as eligibility.

Security support versus Android-version support

A major Android upgrade changes the operating-system version. A security update can arrive without changing that version and can fix vulnerabilities or other security defects. The two schedules should be recorded separately when you assess a used phone or a work device.

  • Android progression: tells you which major Android versions Sony lists for the model.
  • Security end date: tells you the final date through which Sony lists security support.
  • Installed patch date: tells you how current this particular handset is today.
  • Operator timing: explains why a listed release may not yet be visible on your update screen.

A phone can remain functional after its security end date, but applications, employers, banks, or regulators may require a currently supported security level. Make that policy check separately from the question of whether the hardware still works.

Optional enterprise check: Android Enterprise Recommended

If the Xperia will handle business data, consult Sony’s Android Enterprise Recommended listing as a supplementary check. Sony describes this program as Google’s official recommendation for business smartphones that meet requirements for performance, consistency, and security-update practices.

Sony Japan’s current listing shows the Xperia 10 VI with a security-update frequency of 90 days. The page also uses the wording “2年以上のセキュリティ アップデート,” meaning more than two years of security updates. This enterprise listing is useful context, but it does not replace the model- and market-specific end date in Sony Support. Check both before adopting a device for work.

What enterprise buyers should record

  • The exact model and sales region.
  • The Sony Support security-update end date.
  • The operator or managed-network variant.
  • The device’s actual security-patch date during enrollment.
  • Any company rule requiring Android Enterprise Recommended status or a minimum patch age.

What to do when support is ending

Do not wait for the phone to fail before deciding. Use the end date to plan a replacement or a change in use.

  1. Confirm the end date in Sony’s current table and check whether it has already passed.
  2. Assess whether the phone handles sensitive work, banking, authentication, health, or payment information. The more sensitive the use, the less acceptable an unsupported security state may be.
  3. Check your operator’s compatibility requirements and the region of any replacement model. A device with a longer Sony date can still be unsuitable if its carrier bands or regional software do not match.
  4. Compare storage, SIM configuration, warranty, and migration requirements before purchasing. Match the replacement to the region and operator rather than choosing by family name alone.
  5. Back up photos, messages, authenticator data, and device settings while the old phone is working. Transfer accounts and test calls, mobile data, and two-factor authentication before wiping it.
  6. If you keep the old Xperia, avoid treating it as a fully supported primary device after Sony’s listed security date. A less sensitive offline or backup role reduces exposure, but does not restore Sony support.

Troubleshooting common discrepancies

What you observe Most useful interpretation Next action
Sony lists a newer Android version, but the phone reports “up to date.” Operator or regional rollout timing may differ. Confirm the model number and operator, then check again through the phone’s Software update screen.
Your retailer says the phone is a newer generation than Sony’s entry. The retail name may omit the model suffix or region. Use Settings → About phone and search Sony’s table for the exact model.
The phone still works after the listed security date. Functionality can continue after Sony’s published support period. Treat the device as outside Sony’s listed security support and decide whether its use remains acceptable.
An enterprise listing and the general support table appear different. They answer different questions: program requirements versus model-specific Sony dates. Apply the stricter requirement for your organization and verify the exact regional variant.
Your model is not listed. No evidence in the cited table establishes its future eligibility. Do not infer support from a similarly named Xperia; seek the current Sony entry for that model and market.

A repeatable eligibility record

For each Xperia you own or are considering, keep one short record with the following fields:

  • Exact model name and model number.
  • Original country or region.
  • Current operator and carrier edition, if applicable.
  • Android version installed.
  • Security-patch date installed.
  • Android versions listed by Sony.
  • Sony’s security-update end date.
  • Android Enterprise Recommended status, when the phone is intended for business.
  • Date on which you checked Sony’s page.

This record prevents a common mistake: confusing the phone’s current patch level with the final date Sony lists for the model. Recheck the record after a major purchase, a change of operator, or a Sony table revision.
