To check whether a Samsung phone is carrier-unlocked, insert an active SIM from a different provider and look for a network unlock code prompt. That prompt is strong evidence of a carrier restriction; a failed call or “No service” message alone does not prove the phone is locked. Settings can help identify the phone’s carrier configuration and whether it recognizes a SIM, but the original carrier or retailer is the place to confirm eligibility and request an unlock.
Check the carrier details in Settings
Samsung’s US guidance gives this path for identifying carrier-related software information:

- Open Settings > About phone > Software information > Service provider software version.
- Review the listed sale code, network code, and carrier ID for clues about the carrier associated with the device.
These details identify carrier configuration; they are not a universal indicator that the phone is locked or unlocked. Menu names and layouts can differ by model and software version. Samsung’s carrier-switch guidance describes this Settings path.

- Open Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status.
- Look for a network name under Network, when available.
A displayed network name indicates that the SIM is being recognized, not that the handset is necessarily unlocked for other providers. If the SIM is not detected, troubleshoot recognition before treating the problem as a carrier lock. Samsung notes that menu options can vary by device and software version in its SIM detection guidance.

Try an active SIM from another provider
If practical, insert a known-active SIM issued by a provider different from the phone’s original carrier. A prompt asking for a network unlock code is a strong sign that the handset is restricted to its original network.
Do not confuse that prompt with a SIM PIN. A SIM PIN protects the SIM itself; a network unlock code concerns a restriction on the phone. Samsung UK explains the distinction and advises contacting the original provider or retailer for a network unlock in its SIM PIN and network unlock guidance.

If the phone shows “No service,” cannot place a call, or otherwise fails to connect, that result is inconclusive. The SIM may not be activated or recognized, carrier settings may need attention, or the phone may not support the provider’s network. Check the SIM status and activation, and consider compatibility before concluding that the phone is locked.

Ask the original carrier or retailer to confirm
For a definitive answer about the device’s unlock status and eligibility, contact the carrier that originally supplied it or the retailer that sold it. Policies and requirements depend on the carrier and region. Samsung US states that “Unlock requirements vary by carrier and are not dictated by Samsung” in its guidance on moving a Galaxy phone to another carrier. Samsung UK likewise directs customers to the original service provider or retailer for a network unlock; its guidance that Samsung does not lock devices to a particular network applies to that UK support context, not as a substitute for checking another region’s carrier policies.
