On your Galaxy phone, open Settings > Software update > Download and install. If an update appears, the phone is eligible for that release; complete the checks below before starting installation. Depending on the model, Android version, or carrier, the menu may instead be labelled System updates, Check for system updates, or Check for software updates.
Readiness has two parts: whether Samsung and your carrier have made a particular One UI build available for your model, and whether the phone has a reliable connection, enough charge and storage, and a safe backup before installation.

What “ready for a One UI update” actually means
A Galaxy phone can be ready to install an update only when the release is available for that specific model and software configuration. One UI availability is not universal across all Galaxy phones. The model, current Android and firmware version, sales region, and carrier release schedule all affect what appears in Software update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere are also practical requirements. The download can be large, so Samsung recommends Wi‑Fi and says the battery should be sufficiently charged before the process begins. Storage must be available for the downloaded package and temporary installation files. A backup is prudent because an interrupted update can leave the phone unable to operate normally.

A phone that does not show a new build is not automatically unsupported. Carriers can release updates at different times, and Samsung distributes some releases in waves. The correct conclusion comes from checking the phone’s model and software, confirming the original carrier, and trying the official computer method when appropriate.
Run the quickest readiness test
1. Identify the exact model and current software
Open Settings > About phone > Software information. Record the model name or model number, Android version, One UI version, and firmware details shown there. This information lets you distinguish a release intended for your phone from one intended for a different Galaxy variant.
Do not rely only on the phone’s marketing name. Similar Galaxy names can have different regional or carrier firmware, and an update intended for one variant may not be offered to another.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. On some devices, use System updates, Check for system updates, or Check for software updates.
- Tap Download and install, or the equivalent check command.
- Wait for the result. If a package is available, review its version and begin the download only after completing the preparation checklist.
If the screen reports that the software is up to date, that means no newer package is currently being offered to that device configuration. It does not prove that every Galaxy model has received the same One UI release.
Complete the preparation checklist before downloading
Use a dependable Wi‑Fi connection
Connect to a reliable Wi‑Fi network rather than attempting a large update over mobile data. Samsung recommends Wi‑Fi, and some carriers require it for update downloads. Stay within dependable range of the router until the download completes; a failing connection can pause or restart the transfer.

Charge the phone sufficiently
Samsung’s general guidance is to make sure the battery is sufficiently charged before starting. One regional Samsung software-upgrade page recommends more than 50 percent, but that is a regional recommendation rather than a universal threshold for every Galaxy model or release. If the phone is near empty, charge it first and keep it connected to power while preparing.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not begin an installation while the phone is likely to shut down. A loss of power during the installation stage is more serious than a paused download.
Check available storage
Open the phone’s storage screen if you want to check space before starting. If the updater displays a required amount, free at least that amount and retry. Samsung regional guidance also cites at least 1 GB of free memory as a preparation recommendation, but actual requirements vary by update and device.
- Remove large downloads you no longer need.
- Move photos or videos to another safe location before deleting local copies.
- Uninstall unused apps temporarily if the updater requests more space.
- Empty the recycle-bin or trash area in file and photo apps when those files still count against storage.
Do not delete personal files blindly. The amount shown by the updater is the most relevant requirement for that particular package.

Back up important information
Back up photographs, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and other irreplaceable information before installation. Samsung recommends a backup before recovery actions and warns that an interrupted update can prevent normal operation. A backup does not make a failed update harmless, but it gives you a recovery option if service or a reset becomes necessary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check that the backup has actually completed and that you know the account credentials or other method needed to restore it. A backup that is still waiting for Wi‑Fi or cloud space is not a finished backup.
Choose a time when the phone can be unavailable
Installation is not an ordinary background download. During installation, the phone cannot be used, files are inaccessible, and calls—including emergency calls—cannot be made. The device reboots when the process finishes. Start only when you can tolerate that interruption and will not need the phone for an emergency or time-sensitive call.
Why a One UI update may not appear
The model or current Android version is outside the release
Samsung states that the available version depends on the device model and that older devices may not support the latest Android version. Compare the model and software details under About phone > Software information with the release information for that exact variant. A newer One UI version on a different Galaxy does not establish eligibility for yours.
The original carrier controls the schedule
Carriers develop and release some updates. An unlocked phone can still depend on the carrier for which it was originally sold, even if it now uses another network. This is why two apparently identical phones can show different software offers.

Check the phone’s original carrier information. If Samsung’s carrier-specific conditions require it for a SIM-unlocked device, insert the original carrier’s SIM and check again. The relevant SIM is the one associated with the phone’s original software channel, not necessarily the SIM currently used for everyday service.
The rollout is staged
Newly released updates may be distributed in waves. If the model and carrier are correct but no package appears, wait and check again later rather than repeatedly changing settings or installing an unofficial package. A staged rollout can make the update arrive after the first announcement.
The phone is checking the wrong menu
Menu wording differs by Galaxy model, Android version, and carrier. Look for all of these possible labels: Software update, System updates, Check for system updates, and Check for software updates. The usual command beneath the menu is Download and install.
Install the update over the air
- Finish the model, network, charge, storage, and backup checks.
- Connect to reliable Wi‑Fi and, if practical, a charger.
- Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install, using the equivalent menu name if your phone differs.
- Read the displayed version and any release notes. Confirm that the package is intended for this phone before accepting.
- Start the download and leave the phone connected until it finishes.
- When prompted, begin installation at a time when the phone can be unavailable.
- Do not power off, remove the battery, force a restart, or attempt to use the phone while installation is running.
- Wait for the automatic reboot. Afterward, return to Settings > About phone > Software information to confirm the installed Android, One UI, and firmware details.
A download interruption is usually less consequential than an interruption during installation. If the notification offers a resume command, use it rather than starting a second download from an unofficial source.
Use Smart Switch when the phone cannot update normally
Samsung’s Smart Switch program for Windows PC and Mac can detect a connected Galaxy phone and offer an update when one is available. It is the official computer-assisted alternative when the over-the-air route is unavailable or unsuccessful.
Best Value
- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

What changes compared with an over-the-air update
| Consideration | Over-the-air update | Smart Switch |
|---|---|---|
| Where you work | Directly on the Galaxy in Settings | On a Windows PC or Mac with the phone connected |
| Connection | The phone downloads over Wi‑Fi; some carriers require Wi‑Fi | The computer assists with the download and installation; a suitable data cable and stable computer connection are required |
| Best use | Normal, convenient update when the phone has enough space and a working updater | Alternative route when OTA updating is not offered or a previous OTA attempt failed |
| Recovery value | May allow a paused download to resume from the notification | Provides another official installation path, but it does not guarantee recovery from every boot failure |
Prepare for a Smart Switch attempt
- Use a Windows PC or Mac that can install and run Smart Switch.
- Use a USB cable capable of data transfer, not only charging.
- Back up important data before starting.
- Keep the phone charged and do not disconnect it during the update.
- Follow the program’s prompts; do not manually install firmware intended for another model or carrier.
If Smart Switch detects the phone but does not offer an update, the same model, carrier, Android-version, and staged-rollout limits may still apply. The computer route cannot create eligibility for a release that Samsung has not published for that configuration.
Troubleshoot a failed download or installation
The download stops or reports a network problem
- Reconnect the phone to a stable Wi‑Fi network.
- Return to Settings > Software update > Download and install.
- If a notification offers Resume, use it.
- If no resume option appears, start the check again and allow the package to download from the beginning.
- Use Smart Switch if repeated OTA attempts fail.
A temporary connection failure does not necessarily mean the phone is damaged. Avoid switching repeatedly between weak Wi‑Fi and mobile data while the updater is active.
The updater reports insufficient storage
- Read the amount requested by the updater.
- Delete or move enough nonessential files to exceed that amount.
- Remove unused apps if personal files are not enough.
- Restart the update check and confirm that the error has cleared.
If the phone still reports insufficient space after freeing the requested amount, check whether trash folders or cached downloads are consuming storage, then retry. Keep a backup before deleting anything that matters.
The update installs but the phone behaves abnormally
Give the phone time to complete its reboot and initial post-update processing. If it repeatedly fails to boot normally, cannot reach the home screen, or remains unusable after the update, stop repeated forced restarts and seek Samsung service. A failed installation can require professional recovery, and a reset may put personal data at risk if it was not backed up.
Smart Switch also fails
Confirm that the cable carries data, reconnect the phone directly to the computer, and retry with a stable computer connection. If the phone is detected but the update still cannot complete, record the exact error and contact Samsung support or an authorized service location. Do not substitute firmware from a different model, region, or carrier as a workaround.
Install now or wait?
| Choice | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Install when offered | You have reliable Wi‑Fi, sufficient charge, enough storage, a verified backup, and time for the phone to be unavailable. | You receive the release’s available security and feature changes sooner, but the phone is unusable during installation. |
| Wait and prepare | You need the phone for calls, must finish a backup, need to free storage, or are on an unreliable network. | You postpone the release while creating safer installation conditions; a staged rollout may also mean the package is not yet available. |
Waiting is sensible when a prerequisite is missing. It is not necessary to wait merely because another Galaxy model received the update first; model and carrier schedules differ.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Model confirmed: You recorded the exact model and current firmware under About phone > Software information.
- Correct menu checked: You used Software update or the equivalent carrier-specific label.
- Eligibility understood: You considered model, Android version, original carrier, and staged rollout timing.
- Wi‑Fi ready: The connection is stable and permitted for large downloads.
- Power ready: The battery is sufficiently charged; the regional more-than-50-percent recommendation is only a reference, not a universal rule.
- Storage ready: Free space meets the updater’s displayed requirement.
- Backup complete: Important data can be restored if service or recovery becomes necessary.
- Downtime acceptable: You can go without the phone, files, and calls during installation.
- Fallback known: Smart Switch on Windows or Mac is available if OTA updating fails.
If every item is satisfied and the update is offered, the phone is practically ready to install that One UI package. If the package is absent, use the carrier and rollout checks rather than assuming the device has been excluded.
