The community ps5-linux project documents support for specific firmware versions through 7.61. It is an exploit-based, unofficial setup rather than a Linux option built into the PS5, and the soft-mod must be run again whenever you want to boot Linux.
Check your firmware before buying storage or preparing an image. A compatible version, a USB drive of at least 64 GB, and a USB keyboard and mouse are the basic requirements. Even after Linux boots, no reviewed source guarantees that a particular game, peripheral or Steam feature will work on every console.

The eligibility test: firmware comes before hardware
The project supports both PS5 Phat and PS5 Slim models, but only on a defined set of system-software versions. The model name alone does not establish compatibility. The README says intermediate versions may not work, so you cannot safely assume that every release between two listed versions is supported.
The same documentation says firmware 8.00 and newer will not be supported, and that downgrading is not possible. In practical terms, a console already outside the published list should be treated as ineligible unless the live README later changes. Do not buy an SSD or attempt a setup on the assumption that a downgrade will rescue an unsupported console.

Because this project depends on vulnerabilities and community-maintained files, its live documentation is the authority at the time you check. A dated article or a video can become stale when Sony changes system software or the project revises its loader.
Check the current ps5-linux loader README immediately before making changes.
1. Find the exact PS5 system-software version
Record the complete version string; do not rely on a major-number shortcut such as “I am on version 7.” On the console, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and read the installed system-software version. Menu wording can vary slightly with language or a future interface revision, but the value you need is the full number shown by the console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Write down the number exactly. Keep every decimal component, such as 4.02, 6.02 or 7.61.
- Check that the console is the PS5 hardware covered by the project. The README lists Phat and Slim support, but firmware still determines eligibility.
- Compare the complete number with the matrix below. A nearby version is not an acceptable substitute.
- Do not update while you are checking. Automatic updates can move a previously eligible console to a version outside the project’s list.
If the version is not an exact match, pause. The project explicitly warns that intermediate releases need not work, so “between 7.60 and 7.61” is not the same as 7.61.

2. Compare your version with the documented support matrix
| Firmware versions listed by ps5-linux | Model coverage | M.2 note in the project documentation | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21 | PS5 Phat and Slim | The 3.21 entry is explicitly without M.2 support. The README describes the 3.xx setup as unable to boot with an M.2 attached. | Potentially eligible only with the documented 3.xx storage restriction. |
| 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51 | PS5 Phat and Slim | The project groups these releases with M.2 support; verify the current README before relying on that arrangement. | Potentially eligible if your exact number is listed. |
| 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50 | PS5 Phat and Slim | The project groups these releases with M.2 support; confirm current notes before installation. | Potentially eligible if your exact number is listed. |
| 6.00, 6.02, 6.50 | PS5 Phat and Slim | The project groups these releases with M.2 support; confirm current notes before installation. | Potentially eligible if your exact number is listed. |
| 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60, 7.61 | PS5 Phat and Slim | The project groups these releases with M.2 support; confirm current notes before installation. | Potentially eligible if your exact number is listed. |
The matrix is version-specific. It is not approval for every 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, 6.x or 7.x release, and it is not a promise that a future loader will support a version that is absent today. If your number is listed, you have passed the firmware gate; you have not yet proved that Linux will boot or that a game will run.
What “running Linux on a PS5” actually means
This is not an official boot menu, a Sony-supported operating-system installation or an ordinary desktop-Linux install. The project uses a jailbreak or exploit to launch its loader. The README describes the modification as a soft-mod: you must run the exploit again to boot Linux after the console has been restarted or returned to the normal PS5 environment.
That behavior affects how you should plan to use the machine. It is better understood as a separate, temporary boot path than as a permanent replacement for the PS5 operating system. The project also says standby and resume are not supported, so do not expect a suspended Linux session to behave like a normal PS5 rest mode session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A successful exploit launch still leaves several variables: the selected distribution image, graphics and input support, storage configuration, game launcher, anti-cheat behavior and the particular title. A Linux desktop appearing on screen is evidence that the boot path worked; it is not evidence that a specific game is supported.

Hardware you need before attempting the setup
| Component | Status | Documented requirement or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| USB storage | Required | At least 64 GB. The project recommends an external SSD rather than treating a small USB flash drive as the preferred option. |
| USB keyboard | Required | Needed for the Linux setup and use. A wireless keyboard using a USB dongle is supported according to the project’s peripheral notes. |
| USB mouse | Required | Use a wired mouse or a wireless model with a USB dongle; the project lists dongles as supported. |
| USB WLAN adapter | Optional | Useful only if your chosen image and setup need an external wireless adapter; it is not a substitute for firmware eligibility. |
| Bluetooth dongle | Optional | Available as an additional device for supported peripherals, subject to the image and driver support. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | Optional | On supported firmware, the documented arrangement dedicates the M.2 to Linux. It cannot also serve as PS5 game storage in that configuration. |
Buying a 64 GB-or-larger external SSD and the required input devices solves only the physical-storage and setup-peripheral requirements. It cannot make an unsupported firmware version compatible, and it does not guarantee a successful Linux boot or game performance.
Choose the storage path carefully
External USB SSD
The external USB drive is the baseline path described by the project. It must provide at least 64 GB, and the README recommends an external SSD. Use the capacity requirement as a floor, not as a promise that every 64 GB device will offer the same performance or usable space after an image is written. Follow the current README’s formatting and image-writing instructions rather than improvising a partition layout.
M.2 SSD
An M.2 drive is optional, not a prerequisite. On firmware groups where the project documents M.2 support, the drive is assigned to Linux and is not simultaneously available as PS5 game-storage expansion in that arrangement.

The restriction is especially important on the 3.xx setup: the project says the console fails to boot when an M.2 is attached there, and its 3.21 entry is marked without M.2 support. If your console is on one of those releases, remove or avoid the M.2 configuration described for newer groups. Do not infer M.2 behavior from the physical connector or from another user’s console.

Linux images and what they do—and do not—tell you
The project’s image release page viewed for this guide listed several choices: Ubuntu 26.04, Arch, CachyOS, Fedora 44, Proxmox VE 8, Debian 12, Bazzite variants and SteamOS 3 (Holo). That page showed project metadata of kernel 7.1.7 and a build date of 2026-08-29. Image names and builds can change, so check the release page at the time you download.
These are bootable image options, not a game-compatibility table. The release page does not establish that every listed distribution supports every PS5 peripheral, graphics feature or title. It also does not turn the installation into an officially supported SteamOS-on-PS5 product.
Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and explains that Proton allows much of the Steam library to run on SteamOS. That is general SteamOS context. It does not establish official PS5 support, nor does it guarantee that a particular game will work with this community image, this firmware or this hardware combination.
Expect game-by-game investigation after Linux boots. A title may depend on a launcher, graphics driver, controller mapping, kernel behavior, online-service requirements or anti-cheat support. The available sources do not provide an independently validated compatibility guarantee for every game and console setup.

A cautious setup workflow
The safest sequence is to settle eligibility and risks before writing an image or changing settings.
- Confirm the exact firmware. Use the Console Information screen and compare the complete value with the support matrix.
- Read the live loader README. Pay attention to the entry for your exact version, model notes, storage restrictions and any changed prerequisites at the project documentation.
- Decide whether you accept the exploit-based model. Linux requires running the soft-mod again after a reboot, and standby/resume is not supported.
- Plan update control. The README recommends disabling automatic updates. Before doing so, understand that this prevents convenient firmware updates and that support can change as vulnerabilities and project files change.
- Prepare the required hardware. Use a USB drive of at least 64 GB, preferably an external SSD, and connect a USB keyboard and mouse. Add WLAN or Bluetooth dongles only if your chosen setup requires them.
- Select an image from the current release page. Match the image to the project’s current instructions; do not treat a distribution name as proof of game or peripheral support. The release page is at PS5 Linux Image releases.
- Follow the project’s loader procedure. The README contains the current exploit and boot instructions. Because the supported combinations depend on the live project, avoid substituting a generic PS5 jailbreak guide or an old command sequence.
- Test the Linux session before buying more hardware. Confirm that the image reaches a usable desktop, that keyboard and mouse input work, and that your intended storage is visible. Only then investigate a game or optional peripheral.
- Keep a recovery plan. Preserve access to the normal PS5 operating system and record which storage devices were attached when the test succeeded. If a configuration fails, return to the documented baseline instead of changing several variables at once.
Diagnose common failure points
| Symptom | Most useful check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Your firmware number is absent from the matrix | Re-read the complete version and compare it with the live README. | Stop. Do not assume a neighboring release works, and do not plan on downgrading; the project says downgrading is not possible. |
| The console updated after you prepared the drive | Check the installed version again before launching anything. | Re-evaluate eligibility. Disable automatic updates only after understanding the security, convenience and support trade-offs. |
| Linux does not boot on a 3.xx console | Check whether an M.2 SSD is attached. | Remove the M.2 and retest the documented 3.xx arrangement; the project says that setup fails to boot with M.2 attached. |
| No input at the Linux screen | Verify that both a USB keyboard and USB mouse are connected and recognized. | Use the required wired devices or supported USB-dongle peripherals before adding optional adapters. |
| The image boots but a game fails | Separate operating-system boot from title compatibility. | Check the game’s Linux launcher, Proton or driver requirements and the project’s current issue notes. A working desktop does not certify that game. |
| Standby or resume loses the session | Compare the behavior with the project’s stated power-management limits. | Use a full shutdown and rerun the exploit for the next Linux boot; standby/resume is not supported by the documented setup. |
Updates, authorization and regional terms
Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement says updates may include security patches or changes that prevent the use of unauthorized or modified hardware or software. It also contains restrictions concerning modified systems and circumvention of security measures.
That is the wording of Sony’s US agreement, not a universal legal conclusion. Terms and applicable law can differ by country, so review the agreement for your region before modifying a console. The practical risk is clear: an update can alter the conditions on which a community exploit works, and Sony’s terms reserve the ability to address unauthorized software or hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
The project’s recommendation to disable automatic updates creates a trade-off. You may preserve a firmware version that the loader supports, but you give up automatic security and feature updates and must monitor the project yourself. Never follow a casual downgrade recipe: the project says downgrading is not possible, while the US agreement also restricts reinstalling earlier system software.
How to decide before spending money
You are a reasonable candidate when
- Your exact firmware number appears in the current ps5-linux support list.
- You accept that this is an unofficial exploit-based boot path, not a Sony feature.
- You can supply a 64 GB-or-larger USB drive, preferably an external SSD, plus a USB keyboard and mouse.
- You understand that Linux must be launched again after a reboot and that standby/resume is unavailable.
- You are willing to test games individually rather than expecting a blanket Steam or SteamOS compatibility guarantee.
You should stop and reassess when
- Your version is missing from the exact-version table or is an intermediate release.
- Your plan depends on downgrading to an older firmware.
- You need the same M.2 drive to function as both Linux storage and PS5 game storage in the documented configuration.
- You require official support, guaranteed online-game compatibility or normal PS5 rest-mode behavior.
- You are unwilling to accept the update and regional-terms implications of modified software.
What a successful check proves
If your exact firmware is listed and your hardware meets the prerequisites, you have established that your PS5 is a candidate for the project’s documented Linux boot path. You have not established that every image will boot on your particular console, that an optional M.2 arrangement is available on your firmware, or that a chosen game and peripheral combination will work.
The practical order is therefore fixed: verify firmware, read the live project notes, understand the exploit and update trade-offs, prepare the required USB storage and input devices, then test an image. Treat every later result—desktop boot, controller detection, launcher behavior and game performance—as a separate compatibility check.
