Check the game first. Open its Graphics, Display, Video, or similar menu and look for a Performance Mode, an explicit 60 FPS target, or a selectable frame-rate setting. Then confirm that information for the exact PS5 game and its current version in the publisher’s official documentation or patch notes. Your PS5’s system preset and your TV’s refresh-rate label can help configure a supported mode, but neither one proves that a particular game runs at 60 frames per second.
A 60 FPS target is also different from a display being capable of showing 60 frames per second. The game must render at that target, the console must output a compatible signal, and the screen must accept it. Use the checks below in that order.

What actually proves a PS5 game supports 60 FPS?
The strongest evidence is the game’s own current graphics or display menu. Look for wording such as Performance Mode, 60 FPS, frame rate, or a choice between performance and resolution. Labels differ by title, and a game can offer several modes with different targets.

Next, check official information for the exact game, platform version, and update. A launch description may not reflect a later patch, while a PS4 version running through backward compatibility can have different options from a native PS5 release. If the developer or publisher does not state a 60 FPS target, do not infer one from the console’s name, a “performance” label, or a high-refresh-rate television.

Even an explicit target describes the intended rendering mode, not a universal guarantee that every scene remains at precisely 60 FPS. Resolution, visual effects, splitscreen, ray-tracing choices, and later patches can affect behavior. Treat the mode description as the game’s supported target and verify the current version before drawing a conclusion.
Check the game’s own settings
1. Open the graphics or display menu
- Start the game on your PS5 and open its Settings, Options, or pause menu.
- Choose Graphics, Display, Video, or the title’s equivalent. Some games put these controls under a console-specific or accessibility submenu.
- Read every available preset and description. Look for Performance Mode, 60 FPS, Frame Rate, or a selector that contrasts smoother motion with higher resolution or image quality.
- Apply the mode, accept any restart prompt, and return to the description after the game reloads. A mode can be a toggle, a pair of presets, or a menu with separate frame-rate and resolution controls.
If the menu names only “performance” and “resolution” without numbers, the label alone is not proof of 60 FPS. Find an official game-specific explanation before calling it a 60 FPS mode.
2. Record the exact mode and version
Write down the game edition, whether it is the native PS5 build or a PS4 version, the selected mode, and the game’s update status. This prevents a common mistake: applying a performance claim from one edition to another. If the title has separate quality options for ray tracing, resolution, or visual effects, record those too because they can change the mode being discussed.
3. Compare the available choices
When a title offers more than one mode, compare the target, visual trade-off, and output requirements rather than assuming that “performance” always means the same thing.

| Image quality | Does the mode reduce resolution, effects, shadows, or other visual settings to favor motion? |

Official examples of why labels matter
PlayStation’s game examples show that a single title can expose more than one frame-rate target. In its overview of PS4 games enhanced for PS5, PlayStation describes DOOM Eternal modes that include 60 FPS targets and another mode targeting 120 FPS. It also lists Rainbow Six Siege with a 120 FPS performance mode and a 60 FPS resolution mode. Those examples demonstrate why you must read the mode description instead of treating every “performance” or “resolution” label as a fixed number. PlayStation’s enhanced-games examples
Set the PS5 Game Preset correctly
The PS5 has a system-wide preference that can make supported games favor smoother motion. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. Under the available choices, select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, then choose Performance Mode if your priority is motion.
PlayStation describes the choice this way: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” The preset is a preference, not a frame-rate report. It applies only when a game offers compatible performance and resolution modes; it cannot add a 60 FPS option to a game that does not provide one. A title may also override the preset or expose its own in-game selector. PlayStation Support: How to customize game presets on PS5 consoles

Check the screen and PS5 video output separately
Find the connected display information
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Review the information shown for the connected HDMI device and the available resolution and refresh-rate options.
The video-output screen tells you what the console and connected screen can negotiate. It does not identify the rendering target of an individual game. A display that reports 120 Hz is ready for compatible high-refresh-rate output, but that number does not show that the game you want runs at 60 FPS.
Understand 120 Hz Output
The 120 Hz Output setting enables 120 Hz video output for a television or monitor and games that support it. It matters for titles with 120 FPS or other high-refresh-rate modes. It is not required as evidence for an ordinary 60 FPS target, and enabling it cannot make a game render faster than its own supported mode. PlayStation Support: How to change PS5 console resolution
Keep the two questions separate:
- Game question: Does this title and mode target 60 FPS?
- Output question: Can the PS5 and the connected screen accept the signal the game is producing?
Answer the first from the game’s settings or official game-specific material. Answer the second from Screen and Video > Video Output and the display’s own specifications.

PlayStation recommends using the HDMI 2.1 cable included with the PS5 for the console’s high-performance features and notes 4K 120 Hz output with a compatible screen. If the original cable is missing or damaged, a replacement that meets the required specification is a sensible setup fix. It does not add a 60 FPS mode to a game, raise a game’s internal frame-rate target, or turn a 30 FPS title into a 60 FPS one. Likewise, a television marketed as 120 Hz can display a compatible 120 Hz signal, but its label is not proof that a particular PS5 game renders at 60 or 120 FPS. Verify the title first, then make sure the display and connection can handle that title’s output.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use official game information when the menu is unclear
If the in-game wording is vague, look for the game’s official support page, technical specifications, launch announcement, or update notes. Search using the exact title, “PS5,” and “60 FPS” or “performance mode,” and check that the page refers to the edition you own. Prefer information from the game’s publisher or developer and note its publication or update date.
Patch history matters. A performance mode can be introduced, adjusted, or renamed after launch. Conversely, a launch article can describe an earlier build. Before relying on a claim, install the current update and compare the present menu with the dated official statement. If the two conflict, describe the mode and version precisely rather than presenting the older claim as universal.

A practical decision path
- Identify the build. Confirm whether you are running the native PS5 version or a PS4 version on PS5, and install the latest available update.
- Read the game menu. Find the graphics, display, or video options and record any named frame-rate target.
- Choose deliberately. Select the mode that states or clearly describes the 60 FPS target if smoother motion is your priority. Select a resolution mode when image quality is more important and the game offers that trade-off.
- Check the system preset. In Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, set Performance Mode if you want supported games to prefer it.
- Check output compatibility. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, confirm that the connected screen and selected output support the signal you intend to use.
- Verify ambiguous claims. Consult current official information for the exact title and edition. If no source states 60 FPS and the menu gives no number, report the frame-rate target as unconfirmed.
- Test after changes. Restart when prompted and recheck the game’s active mode. Do not treat a new cable, a 120 Hz setting, or the word “performance” by itself as confirmation.
Common mistakes and what they mean
“My PS5 is powerful, so every game should be 60 FPS”
Console capability and a game’s chosen rendering target are different. Developers can prioritize resolution, effects, simulation, or a fixed lower frame rate. Only the title’s options and official information answer the question for that game.
“The Performance Mode preset says 60 FPS”
The preset says that supported games should favor smoother motion. It does not specify a universal number and cannot create a mode that the game does not offer.
“My TV says 120 Hz, so the game is running at 60 FPS”
Refresh rate describes what the display can accept or refresh. It does not reveal the game’s rendering target. Check the game menu first.
“I need HDMI 2.1 for 60 FPS”
For many ordinary 60 FPS scenarios, the decisive fact is the game’s mode, not a cable purchase. HDMI 2.1 and a compatible display become relevant when you need the console’s higher-bandwidth features, such as compatible 4K 120 Hz output. A cable cannot change the game’s internal frame rate.
“An old article proves the current mode”
Updates can change performance behavior. Match the claim to the current version and state the date or patch context when it matters.
How to report your result accurately
When telling someone whether a PS5 can run a game at 60 FPS, include four details: the game edition, the selected mode, the target stated by the game or official source, and any display limitation that affects output. For example: “The native PS5 version offers a Performance Mode described as 60 FPS; the connected display supports the required output.” If the menu only says “Performance Mode” and no official page gives a number, say that the game favors smoother motion but that a 60 FPS target is not confirmed.
This wording distinguishes a documented target from an assumption and remains useful when a later patch changes the available modes.
