On your Pixel, open Settings > About phone > Android version and read Android security update, also called the security patch level. Then open Settings > System > Software update (shown as System update on some versions) to check whether an update is currently offered. Those screens tell you what is installed and what is available now; to determine whether Google is expected to support the phone in the future, compare its exact model with Google’s published Pixel update-support policy.
What the two checks actually tell you
Checking a Pixel’s security status involves two different questions. The first is, “Which security update is installed?” The second is, “Is an update available for this phone right now?” Android answers those questions in different places.

A phone can show an older patch while still being eligible for a later update that has not reached it yet. Conversely, a phone can say that it is up to date while being near or beyond the end of its model-specific support period. Treat the installed patch, current rollout status and long-term eligibility as separate facts.

Before you start
You do not need an app, cable, accessory or paid service to perform this check. The relevant information is built into Android and Google’s policy page. Have the phone available, make sure you can open Settings, and record the exact model name rather than relying on memory or a retail name. If you are preparing a support request, have a way to copy the displayed dates and the full update message accurately.

Google notes that menu names can vary by device and software version. On one Pixel the menu may say Software update; on another it may say System update. The important distinction is the function: the About phone screen reports the installed level, while the System screen checks delivery of a newer release.
Find the installed Android security update
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Android version.
- Locate Android security update or the security patch level.
- Record the value and date exactly as displayed.
That date identifies the Android security update installed on the phone. Do not use it to calculate a support end date: the field reports the phone’s current software state, not Google’s future commitment to that model.
The same Android-version screen can show other identifiers, including the Android version, Google Play system update and build number. These entries are not interchangeable. If you are documenting a phone for support or troubleshooting, copy each label and value separately rather than reporting a single “security date.”
Check for an update manually
- Return to the main Settings screen.
- Tap System.
- Tap Software update. Depending on the Pixel’s software version, the entry may be labelled System update.
- Read the status shown and follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered.
Google provides this manual check for cases in which a notification was missed or the phone was offline. The page may show that the system is up to date, that an update is ready to download or install, or that the device is still checking. Save a screenshot or note the wording if you need to report the result, because the status can change after a rollout reaches the phone.
On Pixel phones, a downloaded Android update installs in the background and takes effect after the phone restarts. If the screen directs you to restart, use that instruction rather than assuming the download itself completed the installation.
Read the result without overinterpreting it
The patch-level field is an observation about the software currently installed. The manual check is an observation about what Google’s update service is offering that device at that moment. Neither field alone is a promise about future releases. A complete answer always combines the two Settings results with the exact model’s policy entry.
For a clear record, write down three separate items: the Android security-update date, the wording on the Software update screen, and the exact model name. If relevant, add the Android version, build number and Google Play system-update value. This prevents a later reader from confusing a build identifier or Play update with the Android security patch.

Android lists Android security update and Google Play system update as separate fields. Pixel security settings also describe the Security update and Google Play system update independently.

A recent Google Play system date does not replace an old Android security patch date, and an old Play system date does not automatically mean the Android patch is old. Report the two values independently when checking security posture.
Determine whether Google still supports your exact Pixel model
- In Settings > About phone, identify the phone’s exact model name. Do not rely only on a family name such as “Pixel 7” if the screen distinguishes a related model.
- Open Google’s page titled Learn when you’ll get software updates on Google Pixel phones.
- Find the exact model on the live policy page and read its stated support period.
- Keep that policy result separate from the patch level and update status you saw in Settings.
Google measures the policy period from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the United States. It is not measured from the date you bought the phone, activated it or received it as a hand-me-down. Two owners of the same model therefore share the same policy start point even if they purchased at different times.

The policy page has stated seven years of operating-system and security updates for Pixel 8 and later, and five years for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families and Pixel Fold. It has also listed Pixel 5a and earlier as no longer receiving Android-version or security updates. Google’s English policy result used for those statements appears to have been crawled about 1.3 years ago, so its model list should not be treated as an exhaustive current catalogue. Use the live page and the exact model entry before asserting that a newly released or less common model has reached a particular end date.

How to interpret “Your system is up to date”
That message means the update service has no newer update available to the phone at the moment of the check. It does not certify that the model will receive updates indefinitely, and it does not override the support period published for the exact model.
- Up to date with a recent patch: the phone has installed the latest update currently offered to it.
- Up to date with an older patch: the device may be waiting for a phased rollout, be affected by operator or device availability, or have reached the end of its support period. Check the policy page before drawing a conclusion.
- Update available: follow the instructions on the Software update screen, then restart when prompted so the downloaded Android update can take effect.
If you need to explain the result to someone else, avoid the shorthand “Google no longer updates this phone” unless the exact model’s policy supports that conclusion. A more precise report is: “The phone shows an Android security update dated [date], and the manual check currently says [exact wording]. The model is listed as [policy result].” That wording distinguishes observed facts from an eligibility judgment.
Why a Pixel update may be late
Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and depend on the operator and device. Its guidance warns that an update may take a few weeks to arrive. A delay during that window does not, by itself, demonstrate that the phone is unsupported.
Do not judge eligibility by announcement day. First run the manual check, note the Android security-update date, and identify the exact model. If the rollout has only recently begun, continue checking rather than treating the absence of a notification as an end-of-support signal.
Rollout timing and support eligibility answer different questions:

Google’s official guidance is that updates “roll out gradually, and are dependent on operator and device” and “may take a few weeks” to arrive. That is why checking once immediately after an announcement is not a reliable support test. Repeat the manual check during the rollout period, while keeping the original patch date for comparison.
Troubleshoot when no update appears
1. Confirm that you checked both screens
Return to About phone > Android version to read the installed Android security date, then use System > Software update to run the availability check. Looking at only one screen leaves one of the two questions unanswered.
2. Check the labels used by your software version
If you do not see “Software update,” look for “System update” under Settings > System. Google notes that some settings steps vary by device and software version, so a different label does not necessarily indicate a problem.

Google’s general Android guidance says a download that fails may be retried automatically over the next few days. Run the manual check again and follow any new instructions instead of concluding immediately that support has ended.

4. Allow for staged delivery
When an update was recently announced, wait through the rollout window described by Google. Availability can depend on the operator and device, and Google says arrival may take a few weeks.
5. Verify the model policy
If the phone remains on an old patch after the rollout period, compare its exact model with the live Pixel support-policy page. This separates a temporary delivery delay from a model that is no longer eligible.
6. Restart when the phone requests it
Pixel Android updates install in the background and become active after restarting. A downloaded package that has not been applied can therefore leave the phone showing its previous security date until the required restart occurs.

If the check fails, record the complete message rather than paraphrasing it. Whether the screen says an update is available, downloading, waiting for a restart, checking or up to date changes what can reasonably be concluded. A screenshot also preserves the date and wording if the status changes later.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the exact model shown in About phone.
- Record the Android security update date exactly as displayed.
- Record the Google Play system update separately, if you need a complete software-status record.
- Run Settings > System > Software update or System update.
- Note whether an update is offered, downloading, waiting for a restart or reported as up to date.
- Check the exact model on Google’s live Pixel update-support page.
- Use the policy’s United States Google Store availability start point, not your purchase date, when interpreting the support period.
- Do not call the phone unsupported solely because an update has not appeared on announcement day.
What information to provide when asking for help
A useful support report contains the model, Android version, Android security-update date, Google Play system-update date when relevant, build number and the precise message on the Software update screen. Include whether the update was recently announced and whether the phone is connected to an operator whose rollout may differ. This information lets someone distinguish an installed-patch issue from a rollout delay or a policy-eligibility question without guessing.
Keep the labels with the values. For example, “Google Play system update: [date]” is not an adequate substitute for “Android security update: [date].” Likewise, “Pixel 7” may be insufficient if About phone identifies a related model with its own policy entry. Exact transcription is more useful than a generalized description.

Using the purchase date as the support clock
Google’s policy period starts with first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Your purchase date does not reset or extend that period.
Treating the Play system date as the Android patch level
The two fields represent separate update channels. Quote the Android security update field when discussing Android security-patch status.
Assuming “up to date” means “supported forever”
The status screen is time-specific. Pair it with the exact model’s policy entry to assess future eligibility.
Declaring end of support after a short delay

Publishing an end date from an old model list
Support pages change as new Pixels are released. Verify the exact model on the current live policy page before stating an end date or treating a list as exhaustive.

Using only a family name
Related models can have different entries or support periods. Read the full model identifier in About phone and match that wording to Google’s page.
Assuming a restart is optional
A downloaded Android update may be installed in the background but not become active until the phone restarts. If Android asks for a restart, complete it before recording the final patch level.
