How to Check Whether Your Phone Uses PWM Dimming

You can screen a phone for PWM (pulse-width modulation) dimming at home, but a home check is a clue—not a calibrated frequency measurement. Set the display to a low brightness on a steady gray or white screen, move a pencil or finger quickly across it, and look for separated repeated images. Then record the screen with a second phone and check for moving dark bands. Repeat at several brightness levels and with relevant display modes enabled and disabled. A positive result suggests the display is pulsing; a clean result does not rule out fast flicker. To measure frequency or waveform, you need a trustworthy test of the exact model or a photodiode/light sensor with suitable measurement equipment.

What PWM dimming means

With pulse-width modulation, a display changes perceived brightness by switching its light output on and off rapidly and varying the proportion of each cycle that is on. A longer on portion appears brighter; a shorter one appears dimmer. The switching may be too fast to see as an obvious blink, yet motion, a camera sensor, or an instrument can reveal the variation.

DC dimming is a different approach: the display’s light output is reduced more continuously rather than by rapidly switching between on and off states. Phones can combine both methods. The same handset may use one method at high brightness and another at low brightness, so a single test at one slider position cannot describe the whole display.

Xiaomi’s official support description for the Xiaomi 14T illustrates this split: it identifies DC dimming at high brightness and high-frequency PWM at low brightness. That is a statement about that model and its documented behavior, not a rule for every Xiaomi phone or every OLED screen.

What an at-home check can—and cannot—tell you

Check What you do What a positive result means What it cannot establish
Pencil or finger motion Move an object quickly across a uniform gray or white display. Distinct, repeated images are visual evidence that the display is pulsing under those conditions. It does not give PWM frequency, modulation depth, or waveform, and a smooth blur does not prove that flicker is absent.
Second-device camera Record the screen and inspect the video for moving dark bands or stripes. Bands are consistent with timing interaction between the display’s pulsing and the camera sensor. Shutter timing can hide bands or create their appearance; band speed is not a frequency reading.
Photodiode or light sensor with measurement equipment Capture light output over time and inspect its periodic signal. A recorded signal can support analysis of periodicity and waveform. It requires appropriate equipment and technique; the result still applies to the tested configuration and brightness.

These checks answer different questions. The first two are practical screening methods. They can show that pulsing is detectable in a particular setup, but neither is calibrated. Instrument testing is the route to a frequency or waveform comparison.

Prepare the phone and the test environment

Consistency matters more than a sophisticated setup. Before testing, write down the exact phone model and, if you know it, the software version. Record the brightness percentage or slider position, the display mode, and any eye-comfort, anti-flicker, DC-dimming, or special dimming option. Manufacturer descriptions and measurements can change with brightness and settings, so these details make a result meaningful.

Use a stable display setting

  1. Temporarily turn off automatic or adaptive brightness if it keeps changing the level while you test. The label differs by phone, so use the brightness control in your display settings or quick settings panel.
  2. Choose a low, fixed brightness for the first pass. Low brightness is important because some phones change dimming methods there.
  3. Open a static gray or white field. A plain browser test page can supply an even field, but it is only a visual backdrop; it is not a PWM meter.
  4. Disable screen animations, scrolling, and notifications for the few minutes of the check. They make motion harder to interpret and can alter the brightness.

Control the surroundings

  • Work in a dim room so reflections and changing room lights do not compete with the display.
  • Keep the screen facing you at a normal viewing angle and distance.
  • Use the same room and viewing position when repeating the test at other brightness levels.
  • If another lamp or monitor is visible to the camera, switch it off or move it out of frame. Room lighting can create camera bands unrelated to the phone.

Run the pencil or finger motion test

The motion test uses persistence in your vision: if light output is pulsing while an object moves, successive positions can appear as separate images instead of one continuous blur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Display the uniform gray or white field prepared above.
  2. Hold a pencil, pen, or finger a short distance in front of the screen. Keep it between your eyes and the display rather than touching the glass.
  3. Move it quickly from one side to the other in a straight line. Try several passes at a similar speed.
  4. Look for crisp, separated copies of the object. A regular series of images that repeats during each pass is a visual sign of pulsing.
  5. Repeat at a middle brightness and then a high brightness. Keep the field, viewing angle, and motion similar so the comparison is fair.

How to read the result

Distinct repeated images are evidence that the display’s light output is varying enough to be exposed by motion at that brightness. Note the brightness and any display mode when you see them. If the images become less distinct as brightness rises, that is consistent with brightness-dependent dimming behavior.

A smooth blur is not proof that the panel is flicker-free. Very fast PWM can blend together visually, and your movement speed, viewing angle, ambient light, and individual visual sensitivity affect what you see. Treat a negative motion test as inconclusive rather than as a clean bill of health.

Use a second phone camera to look for bands

A camera can reveal timing effects that are difficult to see directly. HONOR Support explains that some OLED screens adjust brightness through PWM and that camera capture may show ripples or stripes. The effect depends on the relationship between the display’s switching and the camera’s exposure and readout.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Keep the tested phone on the same static gray or white field and brightness used for the motion test.
  2. Open the camera on a second device and point it squarely at the display. Avoid including lamps, televisions, or windows that could introduce their own flicker.
  3. Record several seconds of video instead of relying on a single still image. Keep the camera steady, then make a second recording at another brightness level.
  4. Review the clip frame by frame or while paused. Look for dark horizontal or diagonal bands that move across the screen, or for a ripple pattern that changes when the brightness changes.
  5. If the camera app offers shutter or exposure controls, try more than one setting and document what you used. Do not treat any setting as universally correct.

Why camera bands are only a clue

Rolling-shutter timing, exposure duration, frame rate, and the display’s own timing interact. A shutter speed can hide a band that appears at another speed, while a different setting can make the pattern more obvious. A camera may also capture flicker from room lighting or produce scanning artifacts of its own. For those reasons, the number, spacing, or apparent speed of bands cannot be converted into a PWM frequency.

It is possible for a screen to look steady to your eyes yet show bands in a recording. It is also possible for a pulsing screen to produce a clean-looking clip if the timing happens to cancel the visible pattern. Record the conditions and repeat rather than treating one video as definitive.

Repeat the check across brightness levels and modes

Do not stop after testing the lowest setting. Run the motion and camera checks at at least low, middle, and high brightness, and repeat them after changing any relevant anti-flicker, eye-comfort, or dimming control. A phone can switch behavior across the slider or when a special mode is enabled.

For every pass, record:

  • Exact model name and storage or regional variant if the manufacturer distinguishes them.
  • Software version, if available.
  • Brightness level or percentage.
  • Display mode, color mode, refresh-rate mode, and any anti-flicker or DC-dimming option.
  • Whether the pencil test showed separated images.
  • Whether the camera showed bands, and the camera settings used.

A pattern that appears only at low brightness is useful information: it suggests the dimming behavior is brightness-dependent. It still does not tell you the frequency unless an instrument measurement or a credible exact-model test supplies that value.

What manufacturer labels do and do not prove

Terms such as “DC dimming,” “high-frequency PWM,” and “anti-flicker” describe a mode, feature, or design claim. They do not automatically describe every brightness level, software version, or regional configuration. The Xiaomi 14T example is explicit about a high-brightness/low-brightness split, which is why testing more than one slider position matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Conversely, finding PWM at one setting does not prove that the phone uses the same method everywhere. Keep the model and conditions attached to your notes. If a support page lists a mode, treat it as manufacturer guidance for the named phone rather than a universal statement about all OLED displays.

When a browser test page helps

A browser page that fills the screen with a steady gray or white patch can make the visual check repeatable. It gives you a uniform target for the pencil and camera methods and avoids distractions from icons or moving content.

It cannot measure PWM frequency. A webpage does not directly observe the display’s light output, and an animation or flicker pattern on a test page is not the same thing as the phone’s dimming waveform. Use the page as a controlled visual field, not as a meter or a source of a numeric result.

How to obtain a real frequency or waveform

If you need to compare two phones quantitatively, identify a measurement of the exact model and tested configuration. A useful report should state brightness, dimming mode, and the method used. Measurements taken at only one brightness can miss a change elsewhere on the slider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photodiode or light-sensor method

A photodiode or suitable light sensor converts changes in screen illumination into an electrical signal. Place the sensor so it receives light from the display, keep the phone at a fixed brightness, and record the sensor output over time. Measurement equipment can then be used to inspect periodicity and waveform. Repeat at multiple brightness levels and relevant modes because the signal can change with those conditions.

Oscilloscope-based inspection

An oscilloscope can display the sensor’s time-varying output and help identify a repeating period or waveform shape. The scope is not measuring the phone directly; it is displaying the signal produced by the light sensor. Probe placement, sensor response, sampling settings, and ambient light all affect the result, so this is an equipment-based measurement rather than a casual phone-camera test.

For most readers, a credible model-specific laboratory test is simpler than building a measurement setup. Check that the report names the exact handset, brightness levels, dimming modes, and whether it measured frequency, modulation depth, waveform, or only visible artifacts.

Compare two phone models without misleading yourself

If you are evaluating phones for flicker behavior, compare like with like. Use the same brightness levels and note whether each phone is in the same dimming mode. A comparison should distinguish instrument readings from visual or camera observations.

Comparison item Why it matters
Exact model and configuration Different variants or software versions can implement display controls differently.
Brightness level Dimming behavior may change across the slider.
Dimming mode DC, PWM, high-frequency PWM, and anti-flicker modes are not interchangeable labels.
Measured frequency A numeric value is meaningful only when the test method and conditions are reported.
Modulation depth or waveform Frequency alone does not describe how strongly light output varies.
Evidence type An oscilloscope or photodiode measurement is different from a pencil observation or camera band.

No universal frequency number guarantees that every person will find a phone comfortable. Use measurements to understand behavior, not to promise a result for all users.

Troubleshoot confusing or contradictory results

The pencil test is clean, but the camera shows bands

This can happen when the pulsing is too fast or too subtle for your eyes but interacts with the camera shutter. Confirm that no lamp or monitor is in the frame, repeat at another shutter setting if available, and test another brightness level. Keep the result as a camera clue, not a frequency estimate.

The camera shows nothing, but you suspect flicker

A clean recording may reflect shutter timing rather than steady light output. Try another exposure or frame-rate option, keep the phone and camera steady, and repeat the motion test. A negative camera result does not rule out fast PWM.

Bands move when the phone brightness does not

Check for changing room illumination, an automatic camera exposure adjustment, or a second display in the scene. Test in a dim room with only the phone screen lighting the subject, then repeat with the camera locked as far as its app allows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Results change when you move your hand

Motion speed affects how separated images look. Repeat with a pencil at a consistent pace and compare several passes. The test is qualitative; it is not designed to calculate a rate from the number of visible copies.

Results change after enabling an eye-comfort or anti-flicker mode

That is a reason to record both configurations. Such controls can alter the display’s behavior, but the label alone does not establish what happens at every brightness. Test low, middle, and high settings in each mode.

A simple record sheet for repeatable checks

Copy the following fields into a note for each phone:

  • Phone: exact model and variant.
  • Software: version shown in system information.
  • Display settings: mode, refresh rate, eye-comfort, anti-flicker, or DC-dimming controls.
  • Brightness: low, middle, or high, plus the displayed percentage when available.
  • Visual test: separated images, smooth blur, or uncertain.
  • Camera test: bands visible or not visible; camera frame rate and shutter/exposure setting if known.
  • Environment: room lighting and whether automatic brightness was disabled.
  • Notes: any change when switching modes or brightness.

This record prevents a result from being misapplied to a different phone, software version, or brightness level. It also makes a later instrument or laboratory result easier to compare with your own screening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical conclusion

Start with the free checks: a static gray or white screen, low fixed brightness, a fast pencil or finger movement, and a short recording made with a second phone. Repeat at several brightness levels and document the display settings. Distinct repeated images or moving camera bands are useful evidence that pulsing is present under those conditions. A smooth visual result or clean video is inconclusive, because fast PWM and camera timing can conceal it.

When the question is “What frequency or waveform does this phone use?”, move beyond visual screening. Use a credible measurement of the exact model or a photodiode/light sensor and appropriate equipment, with brightness and mode recorded for every reading.
