To check whether a phone will work on a carrier, identify the phone’s exact model and regional variant, compare its LTE and 5G NR bands with the carrier’s current bands, then confirm VoLTE, unlock status, and acceptance with the carrier’s official IMEI checker. Band overlap is necessary for access to a band, but it does not guarantee calls, every feature, or coverage in a particular location.
What you need to check
- The exact phone variant: a model family can have different radio hardware by region or carrier.
- LTE bands and 5G NR bands: compare each generation separately against the carrier’s list.
- VoLTE and carrier approval: calling support and the carrier’s device-acceptance rules are separate from radio-band overlap.
- Eligibility and local service: check that the phone is unlocked and not blocked, and consider the network and plan where you intend to use it.
Carrier frequencies and accepted devices vary by country and provider. The band examples below are specific to Rogers in Canada, not universal compatibility rules.

How to check phone compatibility step by step
-
Identify the carrier, country, and intended area
Write down the exact provider and country. If you use an MVNO or sub-brand, consult that provider’s own compatibility instructions even if it uses a larger carrier’s network. Local coverage and plan availability can affect what service you actually receive.

Find the phone’s exact model number and region
Check Settings or About on the phone, its original packaging, or the manufacturer’s official specifications. Do not rely on the marketing name alone: regional versions of the same phone can support different bands. For example, Apple’s iPhone 14 specifications identify model numbers as well as radio bands.

-
Record the phone’s LTE and 5G NR bands
In the manufacturer’s specifications, look for LTE, FDD-LTE, and TD-LTE entries, then record the separate 5G NR entries. Keep the lists distinct: support for an LTE band does not establish support for a 5G NR band with a similar number. Where applicable, note whether a 5G band is sub-6 GHz or mmWave.
-
Compare them with the carrier’s current band list
Use the carrier’s official network or bring-your-own-device page. Match band identifiers directly—such as LTE B66 to LTE B66, or 5G NR n78 to 5G NR n78—rather than inferring compatibility from a phone’s “4G” or “5G” label. More supported frequencies can provide access to more of a carrier’s coverage, but a global band list cannot prove reception at a specific address.
As a Canada-specific example, Rogers’ BYOD network information lists LTE B12, B5, B2/B25, B4/B66, and B7, along with 5G n71 (DSS), n66 (DSS), n41, and n78. Those are Rogers bands, not a template for other carriers.

Check VoLTE and any required calling features
Confirm that the exact phone variant supports VoLTE on the carrier and that it is enabled. Rogers and Bell identify VoLTE as a requirement in their Canadian guidance; Bell’s bring-your-own-device information also calls for compatible bands and an unlocked device. A phone can have matching bands yet fail to make calls if the carrier does not support its VoLTE implementation.
On the phone, check mobile-network or cellular settings for 4G calling, VoLTE, or the carrier’s equivalent label. UK government guidance advises users to look for 4G or 5G while mobile data is active, ensure 4G calling/VoLTE or 5G calling is on, and contact their provider if unsure (UK guidance on the 2G and 3G switch-off).
-
Use the carrier’s official IMEI checker
Enter the phone’s IMEI only into the carrier’s official checker or provide it through a trusted support channel. Bell offers an IMEI compatibility checker and cautions that it cannot guarantee compatibility for devices bought internationally or from another carrier. To find the IMEI, Bell says to dial *#06# or look in the phone’s settings. Treat an IMEI result as the carrier’s acceptance check, not as a substitute for checking coverage at your location.

Verify unlock and block status
Check that the phone is unlocked and has not been reported lost or stolen or otherwise blocked. Rogers’ device eligibility guidance covers lock and blacklist checks and points to APN settings when certain network features do not work as expected.

Test service after activation
Once the carrier has provisioned the phone, turn Wi-Fi off and test mobile data and a phone call in the place you plan to use it. A 4G or 5G indicator is a useful basic check, but it does not by itself confirm that every calling feature or coverage condition is supported.
How to read band overlap without overclaiming
A matching band means the phone’s radio supports that band; it does not prove the carrier will accept the exact device, enable every feature, or provide strong service in your area. Check several separate questions rather than reducing the decision to whether the phone “has 5G.”

- Approval and eligibility: check the carrier’s IMEI result, unlock status, and blacklist status.
- Real-world use: account for local network deployment, plan availability, and settings such as APN configuration.
Specifications are useful for filtering a phone before purchase or use, but the carrier’s current information is decisive for its own network rules. Lists, local deployments, accepted variants, and checkers can change, so verify them at the time you make the compatibility decision.

Rogers Canada
Rogers’ cited BYOD information pairs its band list with a requirement for LTE and calls over LTE (VoLTE) as it retires 3G. Its listed bands should be treated as Rogers-specific information and checked against the carrier’s current page before relying on them.

Bell Canada
Bell’s guidance calls for compatible LTE/5G bands and VoLTE, an unlocked phone, and a device not reported lost or stolen. Bell also notes it cannot guarantee compatibility for devices purchased internationally or from another carrier, which is why its checker and support channel matter alongside the specification sheet.

Apple iPhone 14 specifications
Apple’s specification page illustrates the detail to look for: it lists 5G NR bands n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n14, n20, n25, n26, n28, n29, n30, n38, n40, n41, n48, n53, n66, n70, n71, n77, n78, and n79, plus mmWave n258, n260, and n261, alongside LTE bands and model numbers. Apple notes that 5G, LTE, and VoLTE availability varies by market and carrier, so this is an example of reading specifications—not a universal iPhone compatibility guarantee.
UK calling requirements
UK government advice is to check for 4G or 5G with Wi-Fi off and make sure 4G calling/VoLTE or 5G calling is enabled. The government says UK operators will switch off 2G between 2029 and 2033; that timing applies to the UK and is not a global network timetable.
