To check whether your phone supports satellite-to-cell service, first identify the exact service you want to use, then verify your precise phone model, carrier, plan, region and required settings against that service’s current official guidance. Apple’s built-in satellite features and satellite service offered by a mobile carrier are separate: support for one does not prove support for the other.
First, identify which satellite service you mean
“Satellite-to-cell” can refer to different services with different eligible phones and capabilities. Apple’s own satellite features use Globalstar and are available on certain iPhones in select regions. Carrier-provided services use a carrier’s satellite partnership and have their own device lists, plan terms and coverage. Start with the service name, not a general claim that a phone is “satellite capable.”

- Apple’s built-in satellite features: Check Apple’s requirements for features such as emergency services, roadside assistance, messaging and location sharing. Apple describes these features in its guide to connecting an iPhone to a satellite.
- A carrier’s satellite service: Check the carrier’s specific compatibility list and terms. Examples include T-Mobile T-Satellite and Verizon’s Skylo-based Android service; neither is interchangeable with Apple’s built-in features.
Check compatibility in six steps
- Name the service. Write down whether you mean Apple’s satellite features, T-Mobile T-Satellite, Verizon/Skylo or another named carrier offering.
- Find the exact phone model and variant. Look in the phone’s Settings or About section, or check the original purchase record. A brand name, generation label or 5G capability alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
- Compare it with the official device requirements. Use the service provider’s current list. For iPhones, Apple publishes separate baseline requirements for its built-in and carrier-provided features; carriers maintain their own eligibility lists.
- Confirm your carrier and plan. A supported phone may still need a participating carrier or an eligible plan. Read the current terms for the specific service rather than assuming it is included with ordinary cellular service.
- Check country, region and coverage. Availability varies by service and location. Consult the relevant provider’s current availability information for where you plan to use it.
- Check the task and setup requirements. Confirm that the service supports the function you need—such as SOS, basic text messaging or a particular app—and review requirements for software, default messaging app, setup and an unobstructed view of the sky.
What the current compatibility guidance says
| Service | Phone and software requirements | Carrier, plan and location | What it supports or requires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple’s built-in satellite features | iPhone 14 or later, any model, with compatible software | Available only in supported regions; availability varies | Apple lists emergency services, roadside assistance, messaging and location sharing. See Apple’s satellite connection guide. |
| Carrier-provided satellite features on iPhone | iPhone 13 or later with the latest iOS | A supported carrier is required; some carriers may require a supported plan. Regional availability varies. | Features depend on the carrier offering. Apple’s carrier-provided satellite features guide explains the iPhone requirements. |
| T-Mobile T-Satellite | T-Mobile says most smartphones from the last four years work, but directs customers to its current supported-device page to check the exact phone. | Service is geographically limited; plan options and conditions apply. Check T-Mobile’s current T-Satellite page. | T-Mobile says supported phones connect automatically when no other service is available. Its page distinguishes T-Satellite from free Text to 911 eligibility. |
| Verizon/Skylo on Android | Verizon lists Samsung Galaxy S25, S25 Edge, S25+, S25 Ultra, Z Fold7 and Z Flip7; Google Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL. | Verizon describes availability in non-coverage areas within the Continental U.S., Hawaii and Alaska. | Two-way basic text messaging only; Google Messages must be the default messaging app, and a line of sight to a satellite is required. See Verizon’s satellite FAQs. |
These requirements are service-specific and can change. In particular, T-Mobile’s description that “most smartphones from the last 4 years” work is not a substitute for checking its current exact-device list.

iPhone checks for carrier satellite service
For carrier-provided satellite features, Apple says a supported iPhone needs iPhone 13 or later and the latest iOS, as well as a supported carrier; some carriers may also require a supported plan. When a carrier-provided satellite feature is in use, Apple says “SAT” appears in the iPhone status bar.

You can also look in the iPhone’s cellular settings for the Satellite option. Apple says: “If the Satellite option doesn’t appear, your carrier might not offer or support satellite features and your iPhone won’t use any carrier-provided satellite features.” This check applies to carrier-provided features; it does not determine whether Apple’s separate built-in satellite features are available on the phone.

Phone eligibility is only one part of the check. A connection may be unavailable or limited even when the model appears on the supported list.

- Plan or carrier mismatch: The carrier may require a particular plan or account eligibility.
- Location outside availability: Regional coverage differs, and a service available in one country or area may not work in another.
- Obstructions or connection conditions: Verizon/Skylo requires line of sight to a satellite. Buildings, terrain and other obstructions can affect access, and connections may be delayed or unavailable.
- Software or app setup: An outdated operating system or unsupported default messaging app can prevent a feature from working as described.
Satellite connectivity is not universally available or a guarantee of emergency communication. Follow the service’s official guidance and keep another emergency plan.
