Check the exact phone model’s official specifications for its maximum wired charging rate and required charging protocol, then match the adapter and cable to those requirements. A USB-C port or a high-wattage charger label alone does not tell you how fast that phone can charge.
Find your phone’s exact model and charging capability
- Identify the model. Open Settings and look under About phone or About device. Record the model name or number, not just the product family. Samsung’s guidance also points users to device settings to find this information: Samsung: find your Galaxy model number.
- Open the manufacturer’s page for that model. Search its official specifications or support pages for terms such as “Wired charging,” “Battery,” “Charging,” or the name of a charging mode. Google directs Pixel owners to the “Battery and charging” section of the phone’s hardware specifications to check supported wattage: Google Pixel phone hardware specifications.
- Write down the full requirement. Note the maximum wired charging rate and any stated USB Power Delivery (USB PD), PPS, or proprietary charging support. Include required adapter output and cable rating if the manufacturer specifies them. Do not infer a phone’s capability from the connector shape.
USB-C describes a connector, not a single charging speed. Two phones with USB-C ports can have different maximum rates and protocol requirements. The phone also controls how much power it accepts, so a higher-wattage adapter does not force it to charge at that rate.

Match the adapter, protocol and cable
Check compatibility as a chain: the phone must support the charging mode, the adapter must offer the relevant protocol and output profile, and the cable must be suitable for that mode. When comparing chargers, check:
- Whether the adapter supports the protocol the phone requires, such as USB PD or PPS.
- Whether its output profiles include the voltage, current, or wattage specified by the phone maker.
- Whether the cable is rated for the requested mode, where the manufacturer specifies a cable requirement.
- Whether using other ports or charging other devices at the same time changes the adapter’s available output.
Maximum wattage by itself is not a reliable way to rank chargers. Samsung notes that a high-output adapter may not enable Super Fast Charging if it does not support PPS. Check the compatibility guidance for the exact phone and region: Samsung Australia: fast charging requirements.

What the manufacturer examples mean
Charging requirements differ by phone and model. These examples show how to read manufacturer guidance; they are not universal rules for every USB-C phone.
- Google Pixel: Google lists USB-C to USB-C and USB-A to USB-C cable options, notes that USB-A charging is slower than USB-C charging, and identifies compatible USB PD and PPS adapter classes. Use the specifications for the particular Pixel model rather than assuming one recommendation applies to the whole line: Pixel hardware specifications and Google’s Pixel charging guidance.
- USB-C iPhone: Apple says iPhone 15 and later can charge with a USB-C-compliant adapter, including one that supports USB Power Delivery. Apple identifies a 20W or higher USB-C adapter as an option for faster charging. This guidance is specific to Apple’s USB-C iPhone models: Apple: charge and connect with USB-C on iPhone.
- Samsung Galaxy: Samsung distinguishes Fast Charging from Super Fast Charging and documents model-specific adapter and cable needs. A high wattage alone may not provide Super Fast Charging without the supported USB PD/PPS behavior. Confirm requirements on the support page for the exact Galaxy model and region: Samsung Australia: enable Fast charging.
Use the charging message as a clue, not proof of peak speed
A message such as “fast charging” can indicate that a faster mode is active with the current accessories and conditions. It does not establish the phone’s maximum capability or prove that the phone will sustain its peak rate. Use the model’s official specification to determine capability; treat the on-screen message as a compatibility clue.

If charging is slower than expected
- Try a known-compatible adapter and cable, matching the phone maker’s protocol and output guidance.
- Plug into a wall outlet and check whether sharing the adapter with another device is reducing available output.
- Let the phone cool and avoid heavy use while charging. Temperature, battery age, charger, cable, and phone use can all affect charging speed.
- Inspect the cable and adapter for damage, and test with another compatible set if available. An unsupported or damaged accessory can lead to very slow charging or no charging.
Google summarizes the accessory caveat directly: “Charging speed may change depending on the charger and cable you use.” See Google’s Pixel charging guidance for its device-specific troubleshooting advice.
