How to Check Whether Your Phone Is Water-Resistant Before Taking It to the Beach

Look up the exact phone model on its manufacturer’s official specifications or support page, then check the stated IP rating, test limits and water-related warnings. Do not treat an IP rating as permission to swim with the phone: controlled water-resistance tests do not establish protection against seawater, beach use or the effects of wear and damage. If you cannot confirm the model’s guidance—or the phone has been dropped, cracked or repaired—the cautious choice is to keep it away from water.

Check the exact model, not just the phone brand

Water resistance is specified by model, and even phones in one manufacturer’s range can have different ratings. A product family name such as “Galaxy,” “Pixel” or “iPhone” is not enough to determine what limits apply to your device. Find the full model name or model number, including its generation, before relying on any specification.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Identify the device. Check the phone’s settings, original packaging, receipt or the manufacturer’s support information to establish its exact model. If a page lists several versions, make sure the entry matches yours.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s own page. Use the official specifications or support article for that specific model. Do not substitute another phone’s rating because its name or appearance is similar.
  3. Record the complete water-resistance information. Look for the IP rating and any stated depth, duration, test medium and conditions. Read the caveats on that same page rather than extracting a number from a search result.
  4. Check the phone’s condition and exposure history. Consider drops, cracks, repairs, disassembly and ordinary wear. A rating describes a device under specified conditions; it cannot tell you that your particular phone’s seals remain intact.
  5. Compare the guidance with the beach plan. If the maker warns against salt water, intentional submersion or other relevant exposure, follow that warning. A rating alone does not settle whether the phone is suitable for swimming or use beside the sea.
  6. Check warranty terms and choose how to carry it. Do not assume liquid damage is covered. If the phone needs to be near water, a suitable, properly sealed pouch may reduce exposure, but it is not a guarantee.

If you are unsure how to identify the model, start with the phone itself rather than a retail listing. The settings menu, packaging or receipt may give a model name or number that distinguishes one generation or version from another. Match that identifier to the entry on the manufacturer’s page; do not rely on a broad search result that says only “iPhone,” “Pixel” or “Galaxy.” When the official page offers multiple model entries, confirm the match before reading a rating. The extra check matters because the published examples range from IP67 to different IP68 depth limits, even within a single manufacturer’s lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once you find the official entry, note more than the two letters and digits. Write down the stated maximum depth, duration, test medium and any restrictions. If a model page gives a rating but a separate support article explains warnings, read both. A number without its conditions is not enough to answer the practical question of whether your phone should go to the beach.

What the rating does—and does not—tell you

IP ratings are often used as a shorthand for protection against dust and water ingress. For a beach decision, however, the useful information is not merely the letters and digits: it is the exact rating for your model together with the manufacturer’s stated test limits and warnings. A depth or duration published for one model is not a universal limit for every phone with a similar-looking rating.

For example, Samsung UK describes IPX7 as a test of 30 minutes at 1 metre and IPX8 as 30 minutes at 1.5 metres in its described still, fresh-water test. Those figures explain Samsung’s guidance; they are not a promise that every IPX7- or IPX8-rated phone has identical limits. Samsung says the water-resistance level varies by Galaxy model, so the model’s own manual matters. Samsung UK Support’s “Galaxy Phone Water Resistance” page was updated 15 April 2026. Samsung UK’s Galaxy water-resistance guidance

Apple’s model listing shows another reason to check the individual entry: listed iPhones include IP67 models specified for up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes and IP68 models with listed maximum depths of 2, 4 or 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. These are Apple’s controlled-laboratory specifications for the models identified on its page, not general beach-use limits. The differences are not a reason to assume that the deepest listed model is appropriate for the sea: Apple separately advises against swimming or intentionally submerging an iPhone. Google makes the distinction explicit in its Pixel specifications: an IP rating does not mean a phone is waterproof. Its specifications say the protection rating applies when each device leaves the factory, while its support guidance says resistance may diminish or be lost through normal wear, repair, disassembly or damage; a drop may affect it. Google’s model specifications say: “Designed to comply with dust and water protection rating IP68 under IEC standard 60529 when each device leaves the factory but the device isn’t water or dust proof.” Confirm the exact model entry before applying that statement to your phone. Google Pixel hardware specifications and Google’s guidance on preventing water damage

In short, a rating is a limited description of tested resistance, not a certificate that a phone is waterproof in every environment. Do not read a depth figure as approval for repeated exposure, moving water, salt water or deliberate submersion unless the manufacturer expressly says that use is supported.

When people ask “What does IP68 mean?”, the useful first answer is that the label alone does not supply one universal depth-and-time promise for every phone. The manufacturer’s entry for the specific model supplies the applicable limits and test details. Samsung’s published example of IPX8 is 30 minutes at 1.5 metres under its described still, fresh-water conditions, while Apple lists model-specific IP68 maximum depths of 2, 4 or 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. These are not interchangeable limits. The Apple and Samsung examples show why a rating label should lead you to the model page, not replace it.

Likewise, do not treat a larger number in one manufacturer’s listing as a ranking for beach suitability. The cited figures describe controlled specifications, and the manufacturers’ warnings remain important. Even a model with a listed depth greater than another model’s is not thereby approved for seawater, sunscreen exposure or intentional swimming. A depth and duration are conditions attached to a test, not an invitation to repeat the test in a different setting.

Why the beach is different from a controlled water test

A phone’s published water-resistance test does not necessarily match what happens at the shore. Samsung says its cited IPX8 test uses fresh water with the phone still and without movement. It warns against exceeding the stated depth or duration, high water pressure, and exposure to salt water, pool water, sunscreen, oils and other liquids. Its support page says: “Do not expose the product to unclean water or liquids (salt water, pool water, soapy water, oils, perfumes, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, chemicals such as cosmetics, liquids containing alcohol, etc).” Samsung UK Support’s “Galaxy Phone Water Resistance,” updated 15 April 2026, provides that warning. Samsung UK’s Galaxy water-resistance guidance

That guidance is directly relevant to a beach: seawater is not the fresh water described in the cited test, and sunscreen is among the substances Samsung names. The same source cautions that resistance can weaken over time. Apple likewise warns against swimming or bathing with an iPhone and against intentionally submerging it, even though its model pages list test specifications. Apple’s support article also states: “Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear.” Apple’s resistance and exposure guidance

So the questions “Is my phone waterproof?” and “Can I take it in the sea?” should not be answered from the rating alone. Check the exact model’s instructions for the actual liquid and activity. If the manufacturer warns against that exposure, or its published test conditions do not cover it, treat the device as unsuitable for that use. A phone that is fine beside a towel is not thereby cleared for a swim.

Think through the actual day rather than only the headline activity. A phone might be near splashes, handled with sunscreen on your hands, taken near the shoreline, or intentionally put in the water. The cited manufacturer guidance does not treat those situations as equivalent to a still device in a controlled fresh-water test. Samsung specifically includes sunscreen, oils and salt water among exposures to avoid, and warns about high water pressure and exceeding the stated limits. Apple advises against swimming or bathing with an iPhone and against deliberate submersion. If your plan involves swimming, leave the phone somewhere dry rather than trying to infer permission from an IP label.

Keeping the phone beside you on a dry towel is different from exposing it to the sea, but beach conditions can make accidental contact possible. If you cannot keep it reliably dry, consider whether you need to bring it at all. A rating is not a substitute for deciding how much exposure you are willing to risk, especially when a manufacturer has not described the relevant conditions as supported.

How to account for age, drops and repairs

The official rating is not a live inspection of your handset. Apple says splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent and may decrease with normal wear. Google says resistance may diminish or be lost through normal wear, repair, disassembly or damage, and that a drop may affect it. Samsung also notes that resistance can weaken over time. Apple Support, Google Pixel specifications and Samsung UK Support

Before the trip, check for visible cracks or other damage and consider whether the phone has taken a hard fall or been opened or repaired. A clean exterior does not prove that internal seals are unchanged. If there is a history of damage or repair, the manufacturer’s original rating alone cannot establish the phone’s current resistance. Do not try to resolve that uncertainty by putting the phone in water as a test.

There is no reliable age cutoff in the cited guidance that would let you calculate a current protection level from how many months or years you have owned the phone. The practical point is simpler: resistance may decline through ordinary wear, and the maker cannot infer the state of a particular handset from its model name. Past drops, cracks, repair or disassembly add reasons not to rely on the original rating. A phone that looks intact may still have a changed condition; absence of visible damage is not confirmation that its original resistance remains.

If you remember a drop or repair but cannot tell whether it affected the phone, take the conservative route. Do not perform a DIY immersion check to find out. The original rating describes the model under specified conditions, while your decision concerns the condition of your individual device now. Keep it dry if you cannot confidently rule out a change in condition.

Choose between keeping it dry and using a pouch

The safest practical option is to keep the phone away from water. If you want it close at hand, a phone pouch can add a barrier, but the sources cited here do not test or endorse a particular pouch. A pouch is an accessory precaution, not proof that swimming or submersion is safe.

Choice Exposure and convenience Important limit
Keep the phone away from water Minimizes intentional exposure; less convenient if you need the device nearby. Does not change the phone’s rating, but avoids relying on it for a beach activity the maker may not support.
Carry it in a suitable protective pouch Keeps the phone close while adding a physical barrier, if the pouch fits and is used as directed. No pouch model is validated by the phone-maker sources cited here. Fit, seal and stated limits matter; a pouch is not a guarantee that contents will stay dry or that swimming is safe.

Before using a pouch, check that its dimensions suit your phone, inspect how its seal closes, and read the pouch maker’s instructions and stated limits. Do not assume that a pouch with a water-related label can handle every depth, duration or activity. The phone’s own condition and the manufacturer’s model-specific warnings still matter.

Think of the two choices as a tradeoff between avoiding exposure and convenience, not between “unsafe” and “guaranteed safe.” Leaving the device in a dry place reduces the need to trust either the phone’s seals or an accessory seal. A pouch may make it more practical to keep the phone nearby, but its protection depends on its fit, seal and use according to the maker’s directions. No particular pouch has been independently tested or validated by the phone-maker sources cited here, so do not treat a product label or a generic “waterproof phone pouch” search result as an endorsement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you shop for a pouch, match its dimensions to the phone, review how the closure seals, and read the maker’s instructions and stated limits. Do not assume that the pouch permits swimming, that it can handle every depth or duration, or that its contents will remain dry in every circumstance. A pouch may reduce exposure; it does not change the phone’s own rating, restore any weakened resistance, or override warnings for the phone model.

Warranty: check the terms before relying on coverage

Water resistance and warranty coverage are separate questions. Apple states that liquid damage is not covered under warranty, while noting that consumer-law rights may apply. Google’s Pixel support guidance says water damage is not covered by warranty. Check the terms that apply to your exact device and region, and do not treat a published resistance rating as an assurance that any water-related damage will be repaired at no cost. Apple Support and Google Pixel Help

Before relying on coverage, read the terms that apply to your specific model and location, rather than assuming that water resistance and warranty protection mean the same thing. Apple’s article says liquid damage is not covered under warranty and notes that consumer-law rights may apply. Google’s Pixel support guidance says water damage is not covered by warranty. Those statements are useful warnings, but they do not replace checking the terms for your device and region or considering applicable local consumer rights.

In practice, the right moment to check is before the beach trip, not after an incident. If the decision to bring the phone depends on expected repair coverage, confirm the relevant terms first. A model’s stated resistance does not guarantee that a water-related repair will be free, and warranty language does not make an unsupported exposure safe.

A quick decision before you leave

  • You have not confirmed the exact model: look it up before making a water-related decision.
  • The maker’s page gives a rating but also limits or warnings: use the full conditions and warnings, not just the rating label.
  • The plan involves seawater, swimming or deliberate submersion: do not infer permission from a controlled fresh-water test; follow the model’s guidance and choose to keep the phone dry if the use is not supported.
  • The phone has been dropped, damaged, repaired or disassembled: do not assume its original factory resistance remains.
  • You need it near water: consider a properly fitting pouch used exactly as its maker directs, while recognizing that it is not a guarantee.
  • You are counting on warranty coverage: read the applicable terms and any relevant local consumer protections first.

Make the decision in this order: identify the exact handset, read its official model entry, note the full test conditions, check your phone’s history, compare those facts with the planned exposure, and then decide how to carry it. Stop if any of those checks leave a material uncertainty. Do not let a familiar brand name, a high-looking number, or a pouch’s marketing language stand in for the model-specific guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my phone waterproof if it has an IP68 rating?

No. An IP rating describes specified resistance, not waterproofing in every environment. Limits vary by phone model. Google says an IP rating does not mean a Pixel is waterproof, and Samsung’s IPX8 example is a still, fresh-water test with stated depth and duration. Check your exact model’s manufacturer page and warnings.

Can I take my phone in the sea?

Do not assume that you can. Samsung warns against exposure to salt water and sunscreen, and Apple advises against swimming with or intentionally submerging an iPhone. A controlled fresh-water test does not establish protection against seawater or beach conditions. Keep the phone dry if its maker does not support the planned exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does IP68 mean for my phone?

The letters and digits alone do not tell you one universal depth or duration that applies to every model. Read the manufacturer’s entry for your exact phone. Apple lists different IP68 maximum depths for different iPhones, and Samsung says Galaxy ratings vary by model.

Does a phone’s water resistance last forever?

No. Apple says resistance may decrease through normal wear, and Samsung also says it can weaken over time. Google says resistance may diminish or be lost through wear, repair, disassembly or damage, and that a drop may affect it. An original rating does not confirm your handset’s current condition.

Will a waterproof phone pouch make swimming safe?

No pouch is a guarantee. Check the pouch’s dimensions, seal, instructions and stated limits, and do not assume it permits swimming or submersion. The phone-maker sources cited here do not validate a particular pouch.

Does a phone warranty cover water damage?

Do not assume so. Apple says liquid damage is not covered under warranty, while noting possible consumer-law rights. Google says Pixel water damage is not covered by warranty. Check the exact device terms and applicable rights in your region.

The Bottom Line

Before bringing your phone to the beach, verify the exact model on its manufacturer’s official page, read its complete rating and exposure warnings, and consider the phone’s age, drops and repairs. A rating is not a promise of safety in seawater or a guarantee of warranty coverage. If the planned use is not explicitly supported—or you are unsure—keep the phone dry; a pouch is only an added precaution, not a guarantee.
