1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the Wi‑Fi symbol, then confirm the selected network in Settings. On an iPhone, open Settings › Wi‑Fi and look for the checkmark beside the connected network. On Android, open Settings › Network & internet › Internet and inspect the selected network; some manufacturers use different menu names.
For certainty about a particular app or webpage, briefly turn Wi‑Fi off, test it over mobile data, then restore Wi‑Fi and compare. A cellular, LTE, 4G or 5G symbol alone does not prove that the app is currently using mobile data, because Wi‑Fi may still be carrying the traffic.

The three ways to check, from quickest to most conclusive
| Method | What it tells you | Speed | Effect on connectivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Status-bar icon | Whether the phone appears connected to Wi‑Fi or a cellular network | Fastest | None |
| Network settings | Which Wi‑Fi network is selected and connected | Fast | None |
| Toggle-and-test comparison | Which connection can actually load the same page or app | Slower | Temporarily interrupts one connection |
The status bar is a useful first clue, but Settings gives a clearer answer. The toggle test is the best diagnostic when an icon is confusing, Wi‑Fi is connected without internet access, or you need to know which path a specific app is using.

Connection, internet access and data use are different questions
A Wi‑Fi icon or a checked network proves that the phone is associated with a wireless network. It does not guarantee that the router has a working internet connection. A phone can also retain cellular service while Wi‑Fi is connected. Finally, a usage counter records data transferred over a period; it does not necessarily identify the path of every current request.

Use the quickest check for a routine glance, Settings when you need to identify the network, and a controlled toggle test when you need to know which connection actually works for a particular page or app.
How to check on an iPhone
1. Look for the Wi‑Fi symbol
When an iPhone is connected to Wi‑Fi, a Wi‑Fi icon appears in the status area. The symbol indicates a Wi‑Fi connection, but it does not by itself guarantee that the network has working internet access or that every service is using only Wi‑Fi.
If the Wi‑Fi symbol is absent, the phone may be using cellular data, may have no data connection, or may simply be in a state where the network indicator is not visible. Confirm in Settings rather than relying on the icon alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Confirm the selected network in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wi‑Fi.
- Find the network with a checkmark. That is the network currently selected by the iPhone.
If no network has a checkmark, the phone is not currently connected to Wi‑Fi. It may still show cellular service and use mobile data, provided cellular data is enabled. A selected network can still be offline, so open a known-working webpage if you also need to verify internet access.
3. Check whether cellular data is enabled
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular or Mobile Data, depending on your region and software version.
- Check the main cellular-data switch.
This page also lists apps and lets you allow or block cellular access for each one. An app with cellular access disabled must use Wi‑Fi for data services when Wi‑Fi is available; if neither connection is available, it cannot load online content. A disabled app switch can therefore explain why one app fails over cellular while another continues to work.
Review the app list when you are trying to explain unexpected data use. The list identifies apps that have transferred cellular data and provides a way to prevent future cellular transfers for an individual app.
4. Understand Connectivity Assist
Some supported iPhones can use cellular data together with Wi‑Fi when Wi‑Fi is weak, busy or not connected to the internet. Apple Support calls this feature Connectivity Assist and describes it as using cellular data to improve a connection when Wi‑Fi is slow or unusable. Apple places the control in Wi‑Fi settings. Availability depends on the current system software and device settings.
“Connectivity Assist uses cellular data to improve your connection when Wi‑Fi is slow or unusable — in places like your backyard or driveway, or at coffee shops, airports, sports venues, and everywhere in between.”
— Apple Support, “About Connectivity Assist”
Connectivity Assist supersedes Wi‑Fi Assist. If Wi‑Fi Assist was enabled before an update, Apple says Connectivity Assist is enabled by default afterward. Therefore, seeing a Wi‑Fi checkmark does not always mean that no cellular data is being consumed. If cellular usage matters, inspect the Connectivity Assist control and the app-level cellular settings, then confirm with a comparison test.
5. Run a controlled comparison
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and open the page or app you want to check.
- Note whether the page is already loaded. If possible, refresh or repeat a small action so you test a new request rather than cached content.
- Turn Wi‑Fi off from Control Center or Settings › Wi‑Fi.
- Make sure Cellular Data is on, then load the same page or perform the same action.
- Turn Wi‑Fi back on and reconnect to the original network.
If the content works after Wi‑Fi is disabled, cellular data is providing the connection for that test. If it stops until Wi‑Fi returns, the app may be blocked from cellular use, cellular data may be off, or mobile coverage may be unavailable. Restore the original switches after testing so you do not unintentionally remain on cellular data.

Keep the test small. Loading a short webpage or sending one brief request is less likely to consume significant cellular data than streaming video, downloading a large file or installing an update. If results change, repeat the same action after checking that the Wi‑Fi network itself has internet access.
How to check on an Android phone
1. Open the Internet panel in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet.
- Tap Internet.
- Inspect the selected Wi‑Fi network.
The selected network is the clearest built-in indication of which Wi‑Fi connection the phone has chosen. Android can automatically connect to saved networks, so check the name shown at the time you perform the test rather than assuming it is the network you expected.
The exact labels vary by manufacturer and Android version. A phone may put the same controls under Connections, Connections & sharing or another network menu. If you cannot find them, use Settings search for Wi‑Fi or mobile data. Search is often faster than looking through every category on a customized Android interface.
2. Treat the cellular indicator carefully
Android phones can show cellular signal bars and LTE, 4G or 5G text while Wi‑Fi is connected. Conversely, Android may hide a mobile-data indicator while Wi‑Fi is active. The cellular symbol therefore describes available cellular service more reliably than it identifies the connection carrying a particular request.
Seeing both a Wi‑Fi symbol and cellular bars is normal. It means the phone is connected to Wi‑Fi and can see a cellular network; it does not, by itself, reveal whether a particular app request used one connection, the other, or a device-specific fallback behavior.
3. Compare Wi‑Fi and mobile data directly
- Open the Android Internet panel and turn Wi‑Fi off.
- Turn Mobile data on if it is not already enabled.
- Open the same webpage or app and note whether it loads.
- Turn mobile data off, turn Wi‑Fi on, and reconnect to the preferred network.
- Repeat the test if the first result was affected by a temporary outage.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends switching Wi‑Fi and mobile data to see whether connectivity changes. This test establishes which connection is working at that moment, but it briefly changes service availability and can consume mobile data. Record the original switch positions, especially if you are testing someone else’s phone, and restore them when finished.
If the page loads in both states, both connections are working. If it loads only with Wi‑Fi on, investigate mobile-data availability, app permissions or account restrictions. If it loads only with Wi‑Fi off, the wireless network may be connected without internet access. These conclusions apply to the tested request; they do not prove that every app on the phone behaves identically.
4. Interpret Android usage screens correctly
Android documentation includes a network-usage screen for Google Play services on Android 7 and later. That screen reports data used by Google Play services; it is not a universal, live tally of every app’s current connection. Do not use that one screen to conclude that the entire phone is on mobile data.
Use your phone’s broader data-usage page for per-app totals, when available, and use the toggle test to identify the active path for a particular request. A total for a measured period can show that an app transferred data, but it may not separate every transfer into Wi‑Fi and cellular categories.

A phone can be associated with a Wi‑Fi network while cellular service remains available. Normally, traffic uses Wi‑Fi when it has a usable internet route. Exceptions occur when Wi‑Fi is weak, congested or connected to a network that has no internet access.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
On supported iPhones, Connectivity Assist is the documented example: cellular data can supplement Wi‑Fi in those conditions. Apple specifically describes uses such as weak service in a backyard or driveway and crowded public networks at coffee shops, airports and sports venues. This is a vendor description of the feature, not a promise of a particular speed increase or a fixed amount of cellular use.
Android behavior and controls vary by manufacturer and software version, so consult the device’s network settings rather than assuming that a cellular icon proves active use. If avoiding cellular charges is important, turn off mobile data temporarily during a short test, then restore it afterward, or use the carrier’s account controls to monitor the resulting usage.
How to tell whether a specific app is using cellular data
iPhone
Go to Settings › Cellular or Settings › Mobile Data. Review the app list and its usage figures, then check whether the switch beside the app permits cellular data. The figures are useful for identifying apps that have consumed cellular data, but Apple notes that its totals may not match the carrier’s current billing period.

The iPhone counter may cover a different period unless you reset it at the start of your cycle. Resetting a counter can help you track a new period, but it does not retroactively change the carrier’s billing record.
An app’s permission answers whether it is allowed to use cellular data; it does not prove that the app is transferring data right now. Combine the permission check with a fresh, small action while Wi‑Fi is off if you need to test a particular request.
Android
Open the phone’s network or data-usage settings and look for an app-by-app breakdown. Menu names differ, but Settings search for data usage, mobile data or app data usage usually finds it. A usage total shows that an app transferred data over the measured period; it does not by itself identify whether every transfer happened on cellular or Wi‑Fi unless the screen separates those categories.
For a cleaner diagnosis, choose one app, note its current state, disable Wi‑Fi, perform one brief action, and then restore Wi‑Fi. Avoid background activity during the comparison where practical, because automatic syncing can make a total change even when you are not actively using the app.
A reliable troubleshooting workflow
- Check the status bar. Look for the Wi‑Fi symbol, but do not treat cellular bars or 5G text as proof of active mobile-data use.
- Confirm the network in Settings. On iPhone, use Settings › Wi‑Fi and the checkmark. On Android, use Network & internet › Internet or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- Verify that the Wi‑Fi network has internet access. A checkmark or connected label can remain present when the router or upstream service is offline. Try a known-working webpage.
- Check cellular-data permissions. On iPhone, review the main switch and the individual app switch. On Android, inspect mobile-data settings and any data-saving restrictions shown by the device.
- Perform the toggle test. Disable Wi‑Fi, test the same action over cellular, then reverse the settings.
- Restore your normal configuration. Re-enable Wi‑Fi and reconnect to the intended network; leave cellular data in its original state.
This order prevents a common mistake: changing several settings before establishing what the phone was doing. It also separates a network-selection problem from an internet-access problem and from an app-permission problem.
What common results mean
Wi‑Fi icon is present, but the page will not load
The phone is associated with Wi‑Fi, but the network may lack internet access, require a sign-in page, or be blocking the destination. Test another site, open the network settings, and compare with cellular data. A working cellular test points to the Wi‑Fi network or its internet service rather than the phone’s mobile connection.
There is no Wi‑Fi icon, but mobile data also does not work
Confirm that mobile data is enabled, check signal coverage, and verify that the app is allowed to use cellular data. A carrier outage, exhausted allowance or account restriction can also prevent access; the phone’s icon alone cannot diagnose those conditions. Try a second app or webpage to determine whether the problem is app-specific.

Both Wi‑Fi and cellular symbols appear
This is normal. The phone can be connected to a Wi‑Fi network while cellular service is available. Use the selected-network screen and the toggle test to determine which connection is carrying the test traffic. On supported iPhones, Connectivity Assist can use both under weak or unusable Wi‑Fi conditions.
The Android menu does not match these steps
Manufacturers customize Settings. Search for Wi‑Fi, Internet, Connections or mobile data, then open the result that shows the current network. The names and placement can change with the phone model and Android version. The setting you need is the one that identifies the selected Wi‑Fi network and provides Wi‑Fi and mobile-data switches.
The test works once, then gives a different result
Connectivity can change while you test. Wi‑Fi may recover, cellular coverage may fluctuate, or the app may display cached content. Repeat the same small action, confirm the network state immediately before each attempt, and avoid comparing a cached page with a newly downloaded one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Checking data totals without confusing them with the active connection
A connection check answers “Which network is carrying this request now?” A usage counter answers “How much data did this app or phone transfer during a defined period?” They are related but not interchangeable.
- Use the status bar or Internet settings for the current connection.
- Use the app-level cellular settings to identify and restrict cellular consumption.
- Use the carrier’s account information for the most accurate current billing-period total on iPhone, because Apple’s on-device figures may use a different period.
- Remember that a Google Play services usage screen on Android covers Google Play services, not every app.
- Do not infer a current connection from a historical total. An app can have cellular usage recorded from yesterday and be using Wi‑Fi now.
Practical precautions during the test
- Use a small webpage or brief app action rather than streaming video, downloading a large file or updating software.
- Record which switches were on before you begin so you can restore them accurately.
- Do not assume that turning Wi‑Fi off disconnects every service immediately; an app may cache content that was already downloaded.
- If the result changes between tests, repeat it after checking signal strength and Wi‑Fi internet access.
- Reconnect to the intended Wi‑Fi network before handing the phone back or ending the check.
- Check the app’s cellular permission if one app behaves differently from the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 5G or LTE icon mean my phone is using mobile data?
No. It generally indicates that cellular service is available. Wi‑Fi may still be connected and carrying the request, and Android can hide or show indicators differently. Confirm the selected Wi‑Fi network and use a toggle test when certainty matters.

How do I check the exact Wi‑Fi network on an iPhone?
Open Settings › Wi‑Fi. The network with the checkmark is the one currently selected. The Wi‑Fi icon in the status area is a quick confirmation, but Settings is clearer when several networks are nearby.
How do I check the exact Wi‑Fi network on Android?
Open Settings › Network & internet › Internet and inspect the selected network. If your phone uses another layout, search Settings for Wi‑Fi or Internet; manufacturers commonly rename or relocate these controls.
How can I test one app without using much mobile data?
Use a short webpage load or one brief in-app action. Turn Wi‑Fi off, keep mobile data on, perform the action, then turn Wi‑Fi back on and reconnect. Avoid video, downloads and updates, and restore every switch to its original position.

Why does my iPhone’s cellular total differ from my bill?
Apple says the figures in Settings › Cellular or Mobile Data may not match the carrier’s current billing period. For the most accurate current-period amount, check with the carrier. You can reset the phone’s counter at the start of a tracking period, but that does not alter carrier records.

Does Google Play services data usage show all Android mobile data?
No. Google’s documented screen for Android 7 and later reports usage by Google Play services. It is not a universal tally of every app or a definitive indicator of the connection carrying a request.
What should I do after the comparison?
Turn Wi‑Fi back on, reconnect to the intended network, and return mobile-data and app permissions to their original settings. This prevents an accidental switch to cellular data or an app from remaining blocked after troubleshooting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to tell whether my phone is on Wi‑Fi?
Look for the Wi‑Fi symbol, then confirm the selected network in Settings. On iPhone, the checked network appears under Settings › Wi‑Fi; on Android, inspect the selected network under Network & internet › Internet or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
Does a 5G, LTE or 4G symbol prove that an app is using mobile data?
No. The symbol mainly shows that cellular service is available. Wi‑Fi may still be carrying the request, and Android may hide a mobile-data indicator while Wi‑Fi is active.
How can I prove which connection loaded a page?
Load the same small page with Wi‑Fi on, turn Wi‑Fi off while leaving mobile data on, and repeat the action. Then restore Wi‑Fi and your original settings. The test briefly changes connectivity and can consume cellular data.
Can iPhone use cellular data while Wi‑Fi is connected?
Yes, on supported devices with Connectivity Assist. Apple says it can supplement weak, busy or internet-less Wi‑Fi. Check its control in Wi‑Fi settings if cellular usage matters.
Why does my Android phone have different menu names?
Manufacturers and Android versions customize Settings. Search for Wi‑Fi, Internet, Connections or mobile data to find the current network and connection switches.

Open Settings › Cellular or Mobile Data. The app list shows usage and lets you allow or block cellular access. For the most accurate current billing-period total, Apple advises contacting your carrier.
Does the Google Play services usage screen cover every Android app?
No. On Android 7 and later, that documented screen reports Google Play services usage only, not a universal tally of all apps.
What should I do when Wi‑Fi is connected but nothing loads?
The network may lack internet access or require sign-in. Try another known-working page, compare with cellular data, and reconnect to Wi‑Fi after the test.
The Bottom Line
For a quick answer, confirm the Wi‑Fi connection in Settings: the checked network on iPhone or the selected network in Android’s Internet panel. For a definitive practical check, turn Wi‑Fi off, test the same app or page over mobile data, then restore your original settings. Keep in mind that cellular indicators show available service, not necessarily the path an app is using, and supported iPhones may supplement weak Wi‑Fi with cellular data through Connectivity Assist.
