How to check whether your phone has commercial spyware

There is no symptom checklist or ordinary scanner that can prove a phone is free of sophisticated commercial spyware. For iPhone users, a genuine Apple threat notification is the strongest consumer-facing signal: Apple describes it as a high-confidence alert that an individual may have been targeted. For deeper checking, Amnesty International’s Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) can look for traces linked to known campaigns, but it is a forensic utility, not a clean-device certificate.

If the risk is credible, treat the phone as potential evidence. Verify alerts through official account pages, apply protective settings, avoid actions that could erase data, and involve a qualified responder. A negative scan can miss newer or non-public indicators, while a positive artifact may be old or require expert interpretation.

What a phone spyware check can—and cannot—tell you

Commercial spyware is generally deployed against specific people rather than randomly against every phone. Journalists, activists, human-rights defenders, political figures and people involved in sensitive investigations may face a different threat model from an ordinary consumer. That does not mean a person outside those groups can never be targeted; it means the value of a symptom-based guess is especially low.

Battery drain, an unusually warm handset, crashes, rapid data use, microphone or camera concerns, and unfamiliar account activity all have many benign explanations. They are not proof of commercial spyware, and their absence does not prove that a sophisticated compromise did not occur. Advanced spyware is designed to avoid obvious signs, and a normal phone inspection cannot rule out an attack that leaves little accessible evidence.

Apple says the vast majority of users are never targeted by mercenary spyware. Since 2021, it says it has notified users in more than 150 countries; that figure is the number of countries in which notifications were sent, not a count of victims, infections or current cases. Apple’s threat-notification guidance explains the distinction.

The practical question is therefore not “Do I notice a symptom?” but “What evidence is available, how reliable is it, and what action will preserve my safety and useful evidence?”

1. Start with your threat model

Before touching the phone, write down why you are concerned. Record dates, suspicious messages, account alerts, unexpected configuration changes, travel or meetings that preceded the concern, and who might have the capability and motive to target you. Keep the notes separate from the potentially affected device if possible.

A specific reason for individual targeting warrants specialist advice rather than repeated consumer scans. If the phone belongs to an employer, newsroom, government agency or other organization, use its authorized security contact; do not install investigative software or reset the device without approval when it may be evidence.

  • Lower-risk situation: You have only general symptoms such as battery drain or heat. Apply normal updates and account-security practices, but do not label the phone infected.
  • Credible targeted-risk situation: You received a verified platform warning, a highly tailored exploit attempt, or evidence connected to a known campaign. Preserve the device state and contact a specialist.
  • Immediate personal-safety risk: If surveillance could expose your location, sources or physical safety, use a different trusted device to seek help and plan communications.

2. If Apple sends a threat notification

An Apple threat notification is not an ordinary pop-up or a generic security advertisement. Apple says it uses internal threat intelligence and investigations to identify likely individual targeting. Its support page states: “Although our investigations can never achieve absolute certainty, Apple threat notifications are high-confidence alerts that a user has been individually targeted by a mercenary spyware attack and should be taken very seriously.”

The notification may appear on the iPhone, arrive at the email address associated with the Apple Account, and be shown in the account page. Wording and presentation can vary with device model and software version.

Verify the notice without trusting its links

  1. Open a browser on a trusted device, or type account.apple.com yourself. Do not follow a link in the message.
  2. Sign in and look at the top of the account page for the threat notification.
  3. Compare the account-page notice with the email or on-device message. A message that cannot be confirmed in the account page should be treated as suspicious.
  4. Do not open an attachment, install an app or configuration profile, reveal a password, or disclose a verification code in response to an email or phone call. Apple says it will never request those actions as part of a threat notification.
  5. Save the notice and its date. Take photographs or screenshots from a separate device if doing so will not expose sensitive information.

Do not dismiss a verified alert because the phone appears normal. Apple recommends that notified users contact Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline for assistance. Avoid factory-resetting, restoring from a backup or repeatedly rebooting before a responder advises you; those actions can remove or alter information that may help an investigation.

3. Protect an iPhone after a credible warning

Install current operating-system updates

Update iOS through the normal Software Update screen, preferably over a trusted network and with the device connected to power. Updates close known vulnerabilities and improve logging, but installing one does not prove that an earlier compromise is gone. If a specialist is already coordinating an examination, ask before changing the device state.

Consider Lockdown Mode

Lockdown Mode is Apple’s optional extreme-protection setting for people who face highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. It reduces the attack surface by restricting or changing behavior in some apps, websites, message content, attachment handling and other features. Those restrictions can interfere with normal work, so it is not a routine “security scan” and is not necessary for most users.

On supported iPhone software, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode, read the feature list, and choose to turn it on. Apple documents supported operating systems, device coverage and trade-offs in its Lockdown Mode security guide. Enable it when the targeted risk is credible or a responder recommends it, and tell people you work with that some content or links may not function normally.

Review App Privacy Report

For people at heightened risk, Amnesty International recommends reviewing iPhone’s App Privacy Report. It can show when apps accessed sensitive sensors and which domains they contacted. This is useful context for spotting unexpected ordinary-app behavior, but it is not a forensic finding for commercial spyware; sophisticated malware may not appear in the report or may exploit services outside its visibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Use Android settings as prevention, not proof

Block installation from unknown sources

Android manufacturers use different menu names. In Settings, search for Install unknown apps or Unknown sources, then disable permission for browsers, file managers and messaging apps unless you have a specific, trusted reason to allow it. Keep Google Play Protect and system updates enabled where available. These measures reduce common installation routes; they cannot establish that a targeted spyware infection is absent.

Run Chrome Safety Check for ordinary account and browser issues

In Chrome, open Menu > Settings > Safety Check. Review warnings about saved passwords, unsafe extensions, updates and browsing protection. Amnesty lists Safety Check as a useful Android safeguard, but it does not inspect the phone for commercial spyware or perform a forensic analysis.

Do not install an unfamiliar “spyware detector” solely because an advertisement claims it can find government-grade malware. Publicly documented evidence does not support treating a generic antivirus or cleanup app as a definitive detector for commercial spyware.

5. What Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) actually does

Mobile Verification Toolkit is an open-source, command-line project developed by Amnesty International’s Security Lab for consensual forensic analysis of Android and iOS devices. It examines device records that can be obtained and compares them with indicators associated with known spyware campaigns.

MVT is not a one-button consumer app. You need a computer, the technical ability to install and run command-line software, a lawful right to examine the phone, and enough understanding to preserve and interpret the resulting data. Follow the project’s current installation and analysis documentation rather than copying commands from an old blog post.

Why iOS and Android produce different evidence

For iPhone, an encrypted computer backup can contain a useful subset of device data, which is why MVT is often more informative on iOS when the backup is available and properly created. The accessible evidence is still incomplete; a backup is not a full image of every process or memory state.

Android diagnostic data is more limited and varies by device, operating-system release and permissions. That limitation does not mean Android cannot be investigated. It means the analyst may have fewer artifacts from which to draw a conclusion. The toolkit documentation explains the supported workflows and their prerequisites.

Prepare without destroying evidence

  1. Use a separate, trusted computer and a known-good cable. Keep the computer’s operating system and security controls current.
  2. Obtain the owner’s informed consent. Do not extract another person’s phone without legal authority.
  3. Record the phone model, operating-system version, time zone, current date and visible symptoms. Photograph relevant screens using another device if that is safe.
  4. Ask a responder whether to place the phone in airplane mode, leave it powered on, or isolate it in another way. The right choice depends on the suspected threat and the evidence needed.
  5. Create an encrypted backup or other acquisition only as instructed by the MVT documentation or an experienced analyst. Store the backup securely and do not upload it to an untrusted service.
  6. Run MVT against the accessible records and preserve the complete output, logs and indicator-set version. Do not edit a report to remove inconvenient findings.

If these steps are beyond your comfort level, stop at the platform safeguards and seek assistance. An improvised extraction can change timestamps, trigger synchronization, overwrite logs or expose private material.

6. Interpret MVT and other scan results correctly

A negative result

A scan that finds no matching indicator means only that the examined data did not match the indicators available to the tool at that time. Public indicator sets are incomplete: they can lag behind a campaign, omit non-public intelligence, or lack traces that the acquisition could not collect. A negative MVT result is therefore not a certification that the phone is clean.

A positive result

A matching artifact is a lead, not automatically proof of a current infection. It may be an old remnant, a shared server or domain, a benign item that resembles an indicator, or evidence that needs to be correlated with dates and other records. Do not confront a suspected operator, wipe the phone or publish the finding before a qualified responder reviews the original data.

Privacy Guides explains the limits of indicator-of-compromise scans and why meaningful triage often requires non-public indicators, specialist research and threat intelligence. Its technical overview is at Device Integrity.

7. Choose the right checking method

Approach What it examines What a result can support Skill and limits
Apple threat notification Apple’s internal threat intelligence and investigation of an individual account or device A genuine, account-verified alert is a high-confidence indication of targeted risk Only Apple can explain the underlying evidence; no alert does not prove absence
Settings and account hygiene Attack-surface controls and common browser, account or installation issues Reduces exposure and may catch ordinary misconfiguration Not a forensic spyware verdict; menus and coverage vary by platform
MVT forensic analysis Accessible iOS or Android records compared with known campaign indicators Can surface traces that merit investigation Command-line work, lawful consent and expert interpretation are required; coverage is incomplete
Specialist triage Device data, context, current intelligence and possible non-public indicators The strongest route to a contextual assessment and safe response plan Availability depends on risk, region and the responder’s capacity

8. When and where to get specialist help

Contact a specialist when Apple verifies a threat notification, MVT produces a concerning artifact, the suspected targeting could endanger a person or source, or the phone is managed by an organization with its own incident-response process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Apple-notified users: Apple directs recipients to Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline.
  • Journalists, activists and civil-society organizations: Amnesty International Security Lab provides high-risk digital-security resources and support information at its Digital Security Resource Hub.
  • Managed devices: Use the employer, newsroom or agency security liaison authorized to handle the device and its data.

When you contact a responder, describe the situation as a concern requiring assessment unless a qualified investigation has confirmed compromise. Provide the timeline, device model and software version, the original notification or scan output, and any steps already taken. Do not send a complete phone backup or private conversations through an unverified channel.

9. Common mistakes that make an investigation harder

  • Diagnosing from symptoms: Heat, battery loss and crashes are nonspecific and can lead you toward the wrong remedy.
  • Clicking the warning: Verify Apple notices by typing the account address yourself; phishing messages imitate official language.
  • Assuming “no alert” means “no spyware”: Apple’s notifications are high-confidence alerts, not continuous certification for every user.
  • Installing several detection apps: Untrusted tools can collect sensitive data, create new attack surface or overwrite useful traces.
  • Resetting immediately: A factory reset may remove evidence and may not address an attacker who still controls an account or has another access path.
  • Overstating a scan hit: An indicator match needs context, timing and specialist review.
  • Using retail hardware as a detector: A security key can strengthen account sign-in, and a cable or adapter can connect a phone to a computer, but neither inspects the phone for spyware.

10. A practical decision path

  1. Write down the concern and threat model. Separate ordinary symptoms from evidence of individual targeting.
  2. Check the platform channel. If an Apple message exists, verify it at account.apple.com without using message links.
  3. Preserve the device if risk is credible. Avoid resets, casual “cleanup” tools and unnecessary communication from the phone.
  4. Apply proportionate safeguards. Update software; consider iPhone Lockdown Mode for credible targeted risk; disable Android unknown-source installation and review Chrome Safety Check for basic hygiene.
  5. Escalate before forensic work when consequences are serious. A responder can tell you whether an MVT acquisition is appropriate and how to preserve it.
  6. Interpret evidence conservatively. A negative scan lowers concern only within its limited scope; a positive artifact establishes a lead that requires confirmation.
  7. Plan recovery with the responder. Account resets, device replacement, communications changes and evidence preservation should be coordinated so that remediation does not destroy the information needed to understand the incident.

What “checked” should mean

For most people, a sensible check consists of current software, secure account practices and platform safeguards—not a promise that a consumer app can certify the handset. For someone with credible evidence of targeted surveillance, “checked” should mean that the alert or device data was verified, the phone’s state was preserved, and a qualified specialist assessed the available evidence and advised on remediation.
