There is no universal phone setting that proves full BT.2020 coverage. To check a handset, identify its exact model and region, read the manufacturer’s display specifications, then find a credible measurement for that exact device. HDR playback, a “wide color” label, an Android BT.2020 color-space entry, or a BT.2020 video file can show that the phone handles the signal; none proves that its physical panel reproduces the entire BT.2020 gamut.
What BT.2020 means on a phone
BT.2020, also called Rec. 2020, is the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) reference color space for ultra-high-definition television. The current in-force main recommendation is BT.2020-2, approved in October 2015. It defines a much wider color gamut than DCI-P3. The standard describes the colors that a production, delivery, or display chain may represent; it does not make every consumer panel capable of showing all of them.

The ITU’s status page identifies the recommendation as “BT.2020-2 (10/2015) … In force (Main).” Read the current status at the ITU BT.2020 recommendation page.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Can the software decode a video whose color coordinates are BT.2020?
- Can the operating system and display pipeline process that color space?
- Do the panel’s measured primaries physically cover the full BT.2020 gamut?
Only the last question establishes full display coverage. A handset can answer “yes” to the first two while mapping out-of-gamut colors into the smaller range its panel can produce.
What “display BT.2020 content” can mean
People use the phrase in several ways, so define the claim before testing. A phone may accept a BT.2020-tagged file, decode its transfer function, and send colors through a BT.2020-aware compositor. That is signal handling. A phone may also offer a mode marketed for a wider spectrum or creator work. That is a mode or processing claim. Neither statement necessarily means that the red, green, and blue primaries on the glass reach the BT.2020 reference coordinates.
For a viewer, successful playback can still be useful. The handset may preserve more of the source intent than an older display, even while converting colors that lie outside its native gamut. For color-critical work, however, “plays the file” and “reproduces every encoded color” are different requirements. Write down which one you need before comparing devices.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why HDR does not prove BT.2020 coverage
HDR and color gamut are separate properties. HDR describes aspects such as transfer functions, brightness range, and signal encoding. Gamut describes the range of chromaticities. A phone may decode HDR10 or another HDR format and tone-map it to a panel with a narrower gamut.
The ITU’s HDR guidance describes an ideal reference monitor capable of showing the entire BT.2020 gamut. That is a reference target, not an assumption that an HDR-capable phone reaches it. The guidance is available in ITU-R Report BT.2390-11 (2023).
A BT.2020 container also does not reveal the source gamut. Content mastered in P3 can be represented using BT.2020 coordinates, and the reverse conversion can be handled by the playback chain. The ITU discusses both full-BT.2020 material and P3-mastered material carried in BT.2020 coordinates in Report BT.2407-2017. Therefore, correct HDR playback is evidence of signal compatibility, not a measurement of the panel’s color boundary.
Peak brightness should be recorded separately. A brighter HDR highlight can improve perceived HDR impact, but brightness does not measure how far the panel’s chromaticity coordinates extend toward BT.2020. A phone can be bright and relatively narrow-gamut, or wider-gamut with less HDR brightness.
Step 1: identify the exact phone before checking specifications
Measurements and specifications apply to a particular model, generation, region, and sometimes panel revision. Start by recording the identifiers shown on the handset itself.
- Open Settings and look for About phone, Device information, or the equivalent page.
- Record the complete model number, not just the family name. Include storage or carrier variants when the manufacturer distinguishes them.
- Record the market or region in which the phone was sold. Regional variants can use different panels or firmware.
- Note the software version and the display mode that is active, such as a creator, natural, vivid, or cinema mode.
- Use the model number to open the matching product page and support documentation on the manufacturer’s site.
Do not apply a measurement from a similarly named phone, a different year, or another region. Even when two phones share a marketing name, their panel supplier, calibration, or available modes can differ.
If the phone has several screen modes, treat each mode as a separate condition. A number measured in Creator mode is not automatically a number for Vivid or Natural mode. Also note adaptive color, automatic white-balance features, and brightness controls that may change the panel while you test it.
Step 2: read the manufacturer’s claims precisely
Search the official product and support pages for explicit terms such as “BT.2020,” “Rec. 2020,” “DCI-P3,” “Display P3,” and numerical gamut figures. Copy each claim into your notes with its scope.

| Wording you find | What it can establish | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| “HDR10,” “HDR,” or similar HDR support | The device or software supports a stated HDR signal or format. | Full BT.2020 gamut coverage or even a particular percentage. |
| “Wide color” or “cinema-standard color” | A broad color capability, usually relative to a conventional display. | The target gamut, percentage, metric, or test conditions. |
| “DCI-P3 100%” | Coverage of the P3 target if the manufacturer specifies coverage and conditions. | Any BT.2020 percentage. P3 and BT.2020 are different gamuts. |
| “BT.2020 mode” or “BT.2020 processing” | A display mode or processing path can accept or transform BT.2020 signals. | That the physical panel reaches every BT.2020 primary. |
| A measured “BT.2020 coverage” figure | A useful answer when the exact model, metric, mode, and test method are identified. | Results for a different model, panel revision, region, or display mode. |
| “10-bit display” | More gradation levels than an 8-bit pipeline under the stated implementation. | Gamut size, HDR brightness, or full BT.2020 coverage. |
Check whether a percentage means coverage or volume. Coverage asks how much of the target gamut’s area is reached; volume compares three-dimensional color volume and can produce a different number. A percentage is meaningful only when the target gamut, metric, active mode, and test conditions are known.
Do not combine a manufacturer’s P3 coverage statement with a reviewer’s BT.2020 volume figure as though they were one scale. Keep the gamut name, metric, source, mode, and conditions beside every number. If any of those are missing, label the result incomplete rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
Step 3: treat Android and app color-space labels as signal-path clues
Android exposes named color spaces in its graphics API. The reference lists DISPLAY_BT2020 as a display color-space identifier based on Rec. ITU-R BT.2020-1 with a D65 white point, and it lists DCI-P3 separately. See the Android ColorSpace.Named reference.
This identifier describes software color-space handling. It is not an in-situ measurement of the handset’s panel primaries, chromaticity coordinates, or gamut percentage. A system or application can use the identifier while the display compositor converts colors into the panel’s smaller native gamut.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchUse Android menus, developer information, or application metadata to determine whether a BT.2020 signal is being recognized, but do not use those labels as proof of physical coverage. A player showing “BT.2020” may be reporting the file’s metadata, the decoder’s working space, or the output surface’s declared space.
The same caution applies if an app exposes a color-space selector. A selector tells you what the software requests or accepts. It does not tell you whether the panel’s measured red, green, and blue boundaries coincide with the reference space.
Step 4: interpret iPhone wide-color and HDR statements the same way
Apple’s support documentation says supported Super Retina and Super Retina XDR iPhone displays provide a cinema-standard wide color gamut and HDR capabilities. Those statements are relevant when checking whether a particular iPhone supports wide color or HDR playback, but the cited documentation does not claim complete BT.2020 coverage. Read the wording in context at Apple’s iPhone display support page.
As with Android, a manufacturer’s wide-color or HDR description tells you about supported functionality, not automatically about the panel’s measured BT.2020 boundary. Require a model-specific measurement before making the stronger claim.

Step 5: find an instrumented measurement for the exact handset
When the specification does not state BT.2020 coverage, look for an independent test that measures the exact model number. A useful test should identify:
- the complete phone model and market variant;
- the active display mode and relevant software settings;
- the target gamut, explicitly BT.2020 or Rec. 2020 rather than only P3;
- whether the result is gamut coverage or gamut volume;
- the measurement equipment, pattern source, and test procedure;
- brightness, white-point, and other conditions that can affect the result.
A P3 chart, a screenshot, or an online color-test image cannot establish panel primaries. Screenshots are digital files and may be transformed by the operating system, browser, or publishing pipeline. Visual inspection is also unreliable: two panels can look similarly saturated while differing substantially outside the colors visible in ordinary content.
For a meaningful comparison, the test must measure the emitted light from the phone, not merely inspect the file being displayed. It should state whether the phone was allowed to warm up or stabilize, which brightness setting was used, and whether adaptive features were disabled. Those details do not turn a result into a universal property of every handset, but they make the result reproducible and keep comparisons honest.

If you need a professional answer, use an appropriate display-measurement setup capable of measuring phone-sized emissive displays. Follow a documented procedure, allow the panel to stabilize, disable adaptive changes that would alter the result, and record the exact mode and settings. The result should be reported as a measurement under those conditions, not as a permanent property of every unit sold under the same family name.
Ordinary accessories marketed as color tools cannot determine gamut coverage unless they are part of a documented measurement setup. There is no generic cable, app, or screen protector that can prove a panel reaches BT.2020. If no suitable measurement is available, the correct conclusion is “unverified,” not a guessed percentage.
How to state the result without overstating it
Use language that matches the evidence. These conclusions are not interchangeable:
| Evidence available | Accurate conclusion |
|---|---|
| The phone decodes HDR video, but no gamut measurement is available. | “This model supports HDR playback; full BT.2020 coverage is unverified.” |
| The software or player identifies a BT.2020 color space. | “The playback path handles BT.2020-encoded content.” |
| The manufacturer publishes P3 coverage only. | “The stated P3 result does not determine BT.2020 coverage.” |
| An instrumented test reports a BT.2020 percentage for the exact model and mode. | “The panel measured X% BT.2020 coverage under the cited test conditions.” |
| A qualified measurement demonstrates the full target gamut. | “Full BT.2020 coverage was verified for this model, mode, and test setup.” |
Avoid saying that a phone “supports BT.2020” without specifying whether you mean decoding, processing, a display mode, or measured physical coverage. The shorter phrase hides the distinction the reader actually needs.
Worked example: what Sony’s Xperia 5 wording really tells you
Sony’s Xperia 5 support article describes Creator mode, a wide spectrum associated with BT.2020 processing, and DCI-P3 100% with a D65 white point. It also includes the explicit caveat: “The Xperia 5 doesn’t fully cover the BT.2020 color space.” The article was last modified January 19, 2026, and is available at Sony Support’s Xperia 5 page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is the model of wording to look for. The phone can provide a BT.2020-related processing path and a full P3 result, yet Sony still says the physical display does not fully cover BT.2020. Do not convert the P3 100% figure into a BT.2020 percentage; the two targets are not interchangeable.
How to compare two phones for BT.2020 capability
Build the comparison around the same evidence for both models. A specification-only comparison can be organized like this:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Measured gamut | Is BT.2020 coverage or volume measured for each exact model? | This is the direct evidence of the panel’s color boundary. |
| Claim type | Does each statement refer to decoding, an OS color space, a display mode, or a panel measurement? | These describe different parts of the signal chain. |
| Target and metric | Are both results BT.2020, and are both coverage or both volume? | P3 figures and unlike metrics cannot be ranked directly. |
| Test conditions | Were mode, brightness, white point, and procedure reported? | Settings and methodology can change the measured result. |
| Identity | Do the measurements match the same region, generation, and panel revision? | A result from another variant may not apply. |
| HDR brightness | Is peak brightness reported separately? | Brightness affects HDR impact but does not measure gamut coverage. |
If one phone has a measured BT.2020 result and the other has only “HDR” or “wide color,” the honest comparison is “measured versus unverified,” not a guessed ranking.
When both phones have measurements, compare like with like: same target gamut, same metric, and reasonably comparable test conditions. If one result is coverage and the other is volume, present both figures with their labels rather than declaring a winner from unlike numbers.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming HDR equals a wide gamut
Problem: HDR playback is treated as proof that the panel reaches BT.2020.
Correction: Record HDR capability separately from gamut evidence. Look for a BT.2020 measurement or a clearly qualified manufacturer claim.

Turning a P3 number into a BT.2020 number
Problem: “100% DCI-P3” is presented as “100% BT.2020.”
Correction: Keep the target gamut in the statement. A P3 percentage says nothing precise about the percentage of BT.2020 reached.

Reading an API name as a panel test
Problem: The presence of DISPLAY_BT2020 is used as a hardware specification.
Correction: Treat the API entry as evidence that software can identify or process that color space, then seek a physical measurement.
Generalizing from a family name
Problem: A review of one regional variant is applied to every phone with the same marketing name.
Correction: Match the exact model number, region, panel revision, firmware, and display mode.

Problem: A BT.2020-tagged video plays correctly, so the panel is declared full-gamut.
Correction: Remember that a BT.2020 container can carry P3-mastered content and that the playback pipeline can map colors. Use instrumented measurements for the panel boundary.
Ignoring the active display mode
Problem: A measurement made in a creator or cinema mode is quoted as if it applies to every mode.
Correction: Name the mode in the result. If you switch modes, treat that as a separate display condition.

A quick decision checklist
- Have you recorded the complete model number and regional variant?
- Did you locate an official specification for that exact handset?
- Does the specification identify BT.2020, or does it mention only HDR, wide color, or P3?
- For every percentage, do you know the target gamut and whether it is coverage or volume?
- Does an Android or app label describe software handling rather than measured hardware?
- Does an independent test identify the exact model, mode, method, and conditions?
- Are you reporting “HDR support,” “BT.2020 signal handling,” and “full BT.2020 coverage” as separate outcomes?
- If no measurement exists, have you marked coverage as unverified instead of inferring it from playback?
Bottom line
To check whether your phone can display BT.2020 content, first identify the exact handset and region, then separate three levels of evidence: signal decoding, software color-space processing, and measured panel coverage. Official HDR or wide-color language and Android’s named BT.2020 space can confirm useful capabilities, but they do not prove full gamut reproduction. A model-specific BT.2020 measurement, with its mode and test conditions stated, is the evidence required for a definitive claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does HDR mean my phone has a BT.2020 display?
No. HDR support concerns the signal and brightness behavior, while BT.2020 coverage concerns chromaticity gamut. An HDR phone can tone-map BT.2020 colors into a narrower panel gamut.
Is 100% DCI-P3 the same as 100% BT.2020?
No. DCI-P3 and BT.2020 are different target gamuts. A P3 percentage cannot be converted into a precise BT.2020 percentage.
What does Android’s DISPLAY_BT2020 label prove?
It identifies a software color space based on Rec. ITU-R BT.2020-1 with a D65 white point. It does not measure the phone’s physical primaries or prove full panel coverage.
Can a BT.2020 video file test my screen?
It can show that the playback path recognizes or decodes the signal, but it cannot establish the panel’s gamut boundary. The file may contain P3-mastered content carried in BT.2020 coordinates, and the phone may map colors.
What specification should I look for?
Prefer a measured BT.2020 or Rec. 2020 coverage or volume result for the exact model, region, active mode, and stated test conditions. Generic HDR, 10-bit, or wide-color claims are not sufficient.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a BT.2020 display mode prove full coverage?
No. A mode can provide BT.2020 processing or signal handling while the physical panel covers only part of the reference gamut. Sony’s Xperia 5 documentation explicitly makes this distinction.
Can I verify BT.2020 coverage by eye or with a screenshot?
No. Visual inspection and screenshots do not measure panel primaries. Use a credible instrumented test that reports its target gamut, metric, equipment, mode, and conditions.
What if no exact-model measurement exists?
Report the capability conservatively: the phone may support HDR or BT.2020-encoded playback, but full BT.2020 coverage is unverified. Do not substitute a result from another region, generation, or similarly named model.
The Bottom Line
Check the exact model, separate HDR and software handling from physical gamut, and require a model-specific BT.2020 measurement before claiming full Rec. 2020 coverage.
