How to Check Whether Your PC Will Keep Receiving Windows Security Updates

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

The reliable way to answer this is to check three things in order: the Windows release and edition installed, that release’s Microsoft servicing status, and—if you are on Windows 10 and considering Windows 11—your hardware eligibility and upgrade offer. A PC can be fast enough for everyday work yet run a Windows release that is no longer receiving regular security fixes.

Use PC Health Check for Windows 11 hardware eligibility, then check Windows Update for the actual upgrade offer. If the computer stays on Windows 10, determine whether it is enrolled in Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU). If it is neither on a supported Windows release nor covered by applicable ESU, it should not be treated as receiving Microsoft’s normal free security updates.

What determines whether security updates continue?

Windows support is tied to the installed release and edition, not simply to the words “Windows 10” or “Windows 11” and not to the age, speed, or apparent condition of the computer. Microsoft can support one release while another release of the same Windows version is at the end of servicing.

  • Release: the specific feature version installed, such as a Windows 11 23H2 build.
  • Edition: Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Enterprise N, IoT Enterprise, or another edition. Servicing dates can differ between editions.
  • Support route: standard servicing, an upgrade to a supported release, or a time-limited program such as Windows 10 Consumer ESU.
  • Upgrade eligibility: whether the hardware satisfies Windows 11’s requirements and whether Microsoft has made the upgrade available to that device.

Microsoft’s own Windows 10 notice says, “Windows 10 has reached the end of support on October 14, 2025.” That date applies to general Windows 10 support; a device can continue to boot and run applications after it, but continued operation is not evidence that security fixes are still arriving.

Step 1: Identify the exact Windows release and edition

Use Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose System, then About. On Windows 10, the same information is under Settings > System > About.
  3. Record the Windows edition, version, and OS build shown on the page.

You can also press Windows key + R, enter winver, and select OK to display the Windows version dialog. Record the edition and version exactly; do not stop at “Windows 11.”

Why the details matter

Windows 11 servicing dates are release- and edition-specific. For example, Microsoft’s October 2025 servicing documentation lists different end dates for Windows 11 23H2 Home/Pro and for Enterprise, Education, Enterprise N, and IoT Enterprise editions. Those dates cannot be generalized to every Windows 11 PC. Use the release and edition you recorded when consulting Microsoft’s lifecycle information and servicing notices.

Microsoft’s October 14, 2025 Windows 11 servicing notice illustrates why the edition must be checked. It is a release-specific notice, not a promise that every Windows 11 installation has the same support horizon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Check whether the installed release is still supported

Compare the recorded release and edition with Microsoft’s current lifecycle and servicing information. A supported release should continue to receive the security updates assigned to that release through Windows Update, subject to normal rollout and device-management policies.

For Windows 10, general support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after the end-of-support date it no longer provides the normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for general Windows 10. The computer does not automatically stop working; the security-support status is what changes.

For Windows 11, do not treat “Windows 11” as a single perpetual support period. Check the actual feature release and edition, and update to a supported release when Microsoft offers it or when your organization’s administrator schedules it.

Step 3: Test Windows 11 hardware eligibility with PC Health Check

If the PC is running Windows 10 and you want to know whether the existing hardware can move to Windows 11, use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. It evaluates the whole device and explains a failure instead of making you guess which component is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search Windows for PC Health Check.
  2. Open the app.
  3. Under the Windows 11 eligibility check, select Check now.
  4. Read the result and expand the explanation if the device is not eligible.

If the app is not installed, use Microsoft’s download link on that support page. For a work- or school-managed computer, ask the IT administrator before installing or changing anything; organizational policy can control both eligibility reporting and upgrade timing.

Hardware requirements PC Health Check evaluates

Microsoft’s current Windows 11 system requirements specify these minimums:

Component Minimum requirement What the result means
Processor Approved processor running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores The speed and core count alone are not enough; the processor must also be on Microsoft’s approved list.
Memory 4 GB RAM This is a minimum, not a guarantee of comfortable performance for every workload.
Storage 64 GB or larger The requirement concerns capacity; Windows, applications, updates, and personal files need additional working space.
Firmware UEFI with Secure Boot capability Legacy firmware settings or unsupported boot configurations can prevent eligibility.
Security chip TPM 2.0 The device must provide the required TPM version and have it available to Windows.
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver The installed graphics hardware and driver must meet both parts of the requirement.
Display More than 9 inches, with 720p HD resolution or higher Specific features and applications can require more than this baseline.

These are minimum eligibility requirements, not a promise that the PC will receive the upgrade immediately or that every Windows 11 feature will work. Microsoft can set higher requirements for particular features, applications, or additional hardware.

Do not assume one component upgrade solves eligibility

Adding or enabling a TPM, replacing a processor, or changing another individual component does not by itself establish Windows 11 eligibility. PC Health Check evaluates the complete configuration, including the approved processor, firmware mode, Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics support, and display requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Check Windows Update for an actual upgrade offer

Eligibility and availability are separate checks. A compatible PC might not display an upgrade offer immediately because Microsoft stages the rollout or places a temporary compatibility safeguard hold on the device.

  1. On a consumer PC that is not managed by an organization, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Read the Windows 11 upgrade message, if one appears, and follow the on-screen instructions only after backing up important files.

On newer Windows 11 interfaces, the equivalent page is Settings > Windows Update. A missing offer is not proof that the hardware failed; it can indicate staged deployment, a safeguard hold, policy control, or an assessment that has not refreshed.

After a hardware change, allow the assessment to refresh

If you changed hardware and PC Health Check or Windows Update still shows the old result, Microsoft says the eligibility assessment can take up to 24 hours to refresh. Its guidance also warns that changing a device to supported hardware does not necessarily mean Windows 11 will be offered immediately.

Restart the PC, connect it to the internet, and check the eligibility result again after the refresh interval. If the result remains inconsistent, follow Microsoft’s hardware-change eligibility guidance. Do not force an installation solely because one component now meets a requirement.

What your Windows 10 result means after support ended

If the PC is eligible and Windows Update offers Windows 11

The standard path is to back up important files and use the Windows Update offer. Keep the PC connected to power during the upgrade, and ensure there is enough free storage for the installation and rollback files. The offer still depends on Microsoft’s rollout and any compatibility safeguards.

If the PC is eligible but no offer appears

Wait for staged rollout or resolution of a safeguard hold, and recheck Windows Update. If you recently changed hardware, allow up to 24 hours for Microsoft’s assessment to refresh. A positive PC Health Check result means the hardware meets the stated requirements; it does not override deployment timing or organizational policy.

If the PC is not eligible

Read the reason shown by PC Health Check. Windows 11 requires the complete set of minimums, so a failure involving the processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, firmware, graphics driver, memory, storage, or display must be considered in context. Microsoft’s requirements page does not establish that adding a single module makes an otherwise unsupported PC eligible.

Windows 10 Consumer ESU: the temporary security-update route

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program provides a time-limited option for eligible consumer devices that remain on Windows 10. Microsoft currently says enrolled consumer devices can receive security updates through October 12, 2027.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ESU is not a restoration of full Windows 10 support. It is a security-update program for the covered period; it does not turn Windows 10 into a normally supported release or extend every form of Microsoft assistance. Verify the current enrollment terms and eligibility on Microsoft’s ESU page before relying on the program.

Three support-transition choices

Route Security fixes How long it lasts Current PC retained? What is required
Upgrade the current PC to Windows 11 Yes, once the PC is on a supported Windows 11 release Depends on the installed Windows 11 release and edition Yes All Windows 11 requirements, an available offer, and no blocking compatibility hold
Enroll in Windows 10 Consumer ESU Yes, for the enrolled device during the ESU period Currently stated through October 12, 2027 Yes Applicable consumer eligibility and enrollment; ESU is not full standard support
Move to a Windows 11-capable PC Yes, when the new PC runs a supported Windows release Depends on the new release and edition No A replacement device and migration or backup of personal data

Common results and how to troubleshoot them

“My computer still works, so it must still be supported.”

Not necessarily. Windows can continue to start, run programs, and connect to the internet after a release reaches end of support. Check the release and edition and verify that current security updates are still assigned to them.

PC Health Check says eligible, but Windows Update says no

That combination can be normal. PC Health Check answers the hardware question; Windows Update also considers rollout timing, safeguard holds, update policy, and the device’s current servicing state. Check again later, and allow up to 24 hours after a hardware change for the eligibility assessment to refresh.

Windows Update offers Windows 11, but the PC is managed

Do not bypass organizational controls. Microsoft’s consumer instructions are intended for devices that are not managed by an IT administrator. Contact the organization’s IT team, which may defer or approve the upgrade through its own servicing policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result names TPM or Secure Boot

Record the exact failure shown by PC Health Check and compare it with Microsoft’s requirements. Firmware settings can affect whether an otherwise present capability is visible, but changing firmware or hardware can affect boot configuration and data access. Back up first and use the device manufacturer’s documentation or your organization’s support process.

The result changed after replacing hardware

Restart, connect to the internet, and wait for the assessment to refresh. Microsoft explicitly cautions that supported hardware does not guarantee an immediate Windows 11 offer. Recheck after the stated interval instead of interpreting a temporary mismatch as a final decision.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down the exact Windows edition, feature version, and OS build.
  2. Check that release and edition against Microsoft’s current servicing information.
  3. If it is Windows 10, run PC Health Check and review every eligibility reason.
  4. Check Windows Update for the upgrade offer, remembering that eligibility and availability are different.
  5. If hardware was changed, allow up to 24 hours for the assessment to refresh.
  6. Back up important files before upgrading or replacing the operating system.
  7. If Windows 10 remains in use, verify whether Consumer ESU applies and confirm its current enrollment terms.
  8. If neither a supported upgrade nor applicable ESU is available, plan migration to a Windows 11-capable PC rather than assuming the unsupported installation will continue receiving regular fixes.

How to verify the result after you act

After an upgrade, return to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and confirm that the device is operating on the intended Windows release. Recheck Settings > System > About so the edition and version match your plan. If you enrolled in ESU, retain the enrollment confirmation and verify that Windows Update recognizes the covered device.

Support status can change as releases age, so repeat the release-and-edition check before a major upgrade, after a long period without updates, or when Windows displays messages such as “You’re not receiving security updates” or “Your device has reached the end of service.”
