How to Check Whether Your PC Parts Fit in a Mid-Tower Case

A “mid-tower” label is not a fit guarantee. To check compatibility, compare the exact case model’s published limits with the actual dimensions and clearance needs of your motherboard, graphics card, CPU cooler or radiator, power supply, drives and cables. The reliable method is model-by-model verification, including configuration limits caused by drive cages, fans and radiators.

Start with exact model numbers, not the case category

Write down the complete model name and revision of the case and every part you intend to install. Record the motherboard, graphics card, CPU cooler or liquid-cooling radiator, power supply, storage drives and any drive cages or brackets you plan to use. Manufacturers publish limits for individual models, and two cases both marketed as mid-towers can have substantially different clearances. MSI’s case-selection checklist explains the component-by-component approach, while Thermaltake’s chassis support guidance shows why the published specification for the particular case matters: MSI’s case checklist and Thermaltake’s hardware-fit guide.

Use the manufacturer’s product page or technical manual for the case rather than relying on a retailer’s abbreviated listing. Keep the specification pages open while checking each part, because a headline maximum may apply only when a fan, radiator or hard-drive cage is absent.

Measure the parts when a specification is incomplete

Use a metric ruler or calipers for a borderline fit. Measure the component in the orientation in which it will be installed, including protruding brackets, backplates, power plugs and cable connectors. A ruler can verify a dimension, but it cannot replace checking expansion-slot occupancy, connector direction, radiator thickness or the effect of a drive cage.

Will my motherboard fit in a mid-tower?

First match the motherboard’s stated form factor to the case’s explicitly supported list. Typical labels include ATX, Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX, but support is model-specific. Do not assume that every ATX board fits every mid-tower.

Check E-ATX by dimensions, not by name

E-ATX is not one tightly standardized physical size. If a case lists E-ATX support, compare the motherboard’s actual width and length with the case’s maximum board dimensions. A board can fit inside the chassis yet extend over cable-routing grommets or mounting areas, making installation or cable management impractical. Both the MSI checklist and Thermaltake guidance call for checking the real dimensions when a larger-than-ATX board is involved.

Account for mounting and headers

Confirm that the case has the correct standoff positions and that the board’s mounting holes align with them. Check whether the case provides the front-panel connectors your board can use, such as USB-C, USB 3.x or audio headers. A physical fit does not guarantee that every front I/O feature can be connected.

  • Record the motherboard’s exact width and length from its manual or product page.
  • Compare those measurements with the case’s maximum supported board dimensions.
  • For E-ATX, inspect whether the board covers cable grommets or side-routing space.
  • Verify standoff positions, expansion-slot alignment and front-panel header compatibility.

Will my graphics card fit in my case?

GPU clearance is a multi-dimensional check. Compare the card’s length with the case’s maximum GPU length, then separately verify thickness, rear-slot occupancy, power-connector space and any configuration-dependent reductions.

Length is only the first measurement

Use the graphics card manufacturer’s full length, including its shroud and any rear bracket. Compare it with the case’s stated maximum GPU length. If a front radiator, fan or drive cage sits in front of the card, use the reduced clearance for that layout rather than the case’s maximum in an empty configuration.

Check thickness and slot count

Record the card’s thickness in millimetres and how many expansion slots it occupies. Some modern cards consume three or four rear slots, even though the case may have fewer usable openings once adjacent brackets or vertical-mount hardware are installed. Make sure the case has enough horizontal slot positions and that the card will not collide with side-panel structures.

Leave room for power cables

Check where the card’s power sockets face. A card may meet the nominal length limit but still press its cable against the side panel if the connector exits toward the panel. Include the bend radius and connector height in your clearance check. Side-panel pressure can damage a connector or prevent the panel from closing.

Look for layout interactions

Front fans, a front-mounted radiator, a hard-drive cage and cable channels can all reduce GPU room. Thermaltake’s support guidance and MSI’s checklist recommend checking these dependencies rather than treating the GPU-length figure as universal. Draw the installed layout or use the case manual’s configuration diagram when several components share the same space.

  • GPU length, including the rear bracket and shroud
  • GPU thickness and occupied expansion slots
  • Power-connector position and side-panel cable clearance
  • Front-fan or radiator placement
  • Drive-cage position and whether it must be removed

How to check CPU air-cooler and radiator clearance

Air coolers

Compare the cooler’s complete height with the case’s maximum CPU-cooler height. Include the fan clips and any top protrusion, not just the heatsink tower. A cooler that is a few millimetres taller than the published limit can prevent the side panel from closing.

All-in-one liquid coolers

For an AIO, verify the radiator size, mounting location and available thickness. A case may list support for a 240 mm or 360 mm radiator, but that does not prove that every radiator thickness, fan combination or tube orientation works. Check clearance to the motherboard’s VRM heatsinks, memory modules, graphics card and top-panel frame. A front radiator can also shorten the available GPU length, while a top radiator can conflict with tall memory or motherboard heatsinks.

How to check the PSU, drives and cable space

Power-supply form factor and length

Confirm that the case accepts your PSU form factor, normally ATX for a standard desktop supply, and compare the PSU’s actual length with the case’s maximum. Include the modular connector area and cable bend space. A long supply can fit the metal enclosure but leave too little room to route cables or install a drive cage.

Drive-cage effects

Check whether installing a 3.5-inch hard-drive cage changes the allowable PSU or GPU length. Some specifications publish one limit with the cage installed and a larger limit with it removed. If you need the cage, use the smaller figure; do not plan around the cage-free number.

Storage mounts and power leads

Confirm that the chassis has the 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch mounts you need and that their locations do not block radiator, fan or cable paths. Allow room for SATA data and power plugs. Verify that the case’s cable-routing channels can accommodate the number and stiffness of your PSU leads.

Other compatibility checks people miss

After the major dimensions match, check the remaining physical and electrical interfaces:

  • Storage brackets: Ensure the required trays or cages are included and compatible with your drive sizes.
  • Front-panel headers: Match the case’s USB, audio and power-switch connectors to headers on the motherboard.
  • Vertical GPU hardware: If you intend to mount the card vertically, confirm that the case supports it and that a suitable riser and side-panel clearance are available.
  • Side-panel and cable clearance: Check the space behind the motherboard tray and beside GPU power connectors, not only the central chamber.

Once you have a compatibility list, revisit the exact product pages. Published limits can depend on a fan, radiator or drive-cage arrangement, as the MSI and Thermaltake guidance emphasizes.

Worked examples: two mid-towers, different limits

Manufacturer specifications show why “mid-tower” is too broad to answer a fit question. The following values are for the named models and the stated configurations, not for every case in their category.

Case model Motherboard support Maximum CPU-cooler height Maximum GPU length Maximum PSU length
Antec FLUX E-ATX boards up to 330 mm wide 180 mm 408 mm 235 mm with an HDD installed
Antec P20C E-ATX, ATX, Micro-ATX and ITX 170 mm 375 mm 205 mm with an HDD; 410 mm without an HDD

The FLUX and P20C are both identified by Antec as mid-towers, yet their published GPU and cooler limits differ. The P20C’s PSU limit changes by 205 mm depending on whether an HDD is installed, while the cage-free figure is 410 mm. The FLUX specification instead gives 235 mm with an HDD. Those differences are why you must compare your parts with the exact case configuration.

A repeatable compatibility-check procedure

  1. List every exact model. Write the full case model and revision, motherboard, GPU, cooler or radiator, PSU, drives, fans and planned cages.
  2. Open primary specifications. Use the case manufacturer’s product page and manual, then the component manufacturers’ pages for dimensions and installation requirements.
  3. Check the motherboard first. Match the supported form factor and, for E-ATX, compare actual width and length. Note any covered grommets or mounting restrictions.
  4. Check the GPU in four dimensions. Compare length, thickness, slot count and connector-side clearance. Apply reductions caused by front fans, radiators or cages.
  5. Check CPU cooling. For an air cooler, compare total height. For an AIO, confirm radiator size, thickness, mounting location, fan arrangement and nearby-part clearance.
  6. Check the PSU. Match form factor, compare length and allow space for modular plugs and cable bends. Apply the case’s HDD-cage condition to the length limit.
  7. Check storage and expansion. Confirm drive mounts, rear slots, card spacing and any special brackets or risers.
  8. Check front I/O and headers. Make sure the motherboard has headers for the case’s USB, audio and other front-panel connectors.
  9. Resolve shared-space conflicts. Sketch the front-to-back layout. A radiator, fan or cage that fits independently may reduce another component’s clearance.
  10. Recheck before buying or assembling. Confirm that the figures still apply to your chosen fan, radiator and drive layout. If a measurement is close, verify it with a ruler and consult the manufacturer’s manual rather than assuming tolerance.

What to do when a component is borderline

The specification is missing a dimension

Look for the component’s installation drawing or manual, which may list dimensions omitted from a marketing page. If the case gives only a maximum and the part page gives only a product-box size, do not treat the box size as the installed clearance. Seek the bare component dimensions and account for brackets, plugs and cables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The GPU fits on paper but the side panel will not close

Measure from the card’s power connector to the side panel with the cable attached. Try a different cable-routing path or a connector with the manufacturer-approved orientation; never force a sharp bend at the plug. If the case specification assumes a different side panel or front layout, use that configuration’s clearance or choose a shorter or thinner card.

The radiator and GPU compete for the same space

Check whether moving the radiator from the front to the top changes both clearances. Recalculate GPU length after every layout change. A case’s radiator-size claim describes a mounting position, not simultaneous clearance for every other component.

The PSU length changes when a cage is installed

Decide whether the cage is required for your drives. Use the cage-installed limit if it remains, and verify cable room as well as metal-to-metal length. If the supply exceeds that limit, removing the cage is a configuration change, not a measurement workaround; make sure your storage plan still works.

The E-ATX board technically fits but blocks routing holes

Compare the board’s edge with the case’s grommets and tray openings. Plan cable routing before assembly. If the board covers essential pass-throughs or leaves no practical route for the 24-pin and EPS cables, a nominal fit may still be unsuitable for your build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare two mid-tower cases intelligently

When choosing between cases, compare the limits that affect your specific parts rather than external height or volume. Put the values in a worksheet with one row per constraint:

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Motherboard Which form factors are explicitly supported? What are the maximum width and length for E-ATX?
Graphics card What are the maximum length, thickness and slot count? Does a front radiator, fan or cage reduce length?
CPU cooling What is the maximum air-cooler height? Which radiator sizes and mounting locations are supported, and at what thickness?
PSU Which form factor and maximum length are allowed? Does an HDD cage change the number?
Storage How many 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch mounts are available, and where are they located?
Expansion and I/O How many usable rear slots are there, and do the front-panel connectors match the motherboard headers?
Cable clearance Is there enough room behind the tray and beside GPU connectors to close the panels without stressing cables?

Use the smaller or more restrictive value whenever your intended configuration activates it. For example, a case with a large cage-free GPU limit is not the better choice if you need the cage and your card exceeds the cage-installed limit.
