What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To check whether your PC can run an open-world action RPG, compare the exact game edition’s current minimum and recommended requirements with your own Windows version, 32- or 64-bit architecture, processor, RAM, graphics card and VRAM, DirectX version, and free storage. Then read the publisher’s target for resolution, frame rate, and graphics quality. Meeting “minimum” is a screening result, not a promise of smooth play; the recommended tier is usually the better match for the advertised experience.
This guide shows where to find each specification, how to compare it without guessing, and what to do when one component falls short. Because no specific game or PC was supplied, it cannot issue a yes-or-no verdict for an individual system.

What “can run” actually means
Game requirements describe a range of expected configurations, not a universal performance guarantee. A minimum tier generally identifies a system on which the game is intended to start and operate at a lower preset or output target. A recommended tier is closer to the developer’s preferred experience, but it still cannot account for every scene, driver, background process, thermal condition, or display setting.

- High-refresh or high-resolution play: You need more capability than a normal recommended tier if you are targeting 1440p, 4K, or a monitor above 60 Hz.
A PC can pass a minimum requirement and still be unsuitable for your preferred target. Conversely, a machine that exceeds the recommended processor but has an older graphics card may remain graphics-limited. Treat each requirement as a separate check.
Start with the exact, current requirement listing
Open the official store or publisher page for the exact game and edition you plan to install. A PC version may have different requirements from a console release, an enhanced edition, an expansion, or an early-access build. Use the newest listing available, because requirements and installation sizes can change through patches.
Copy the values into a worksheet before comparing:
- Supported Windows edition and version
- 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, if specified
- Minimum and recommended CPU
- Minimum and recommended RAM
- Graphics card model or class and required VRAM, if listed
- DirectX version
- Free storage capacity and any SSD or hard-drive requirement
- Resolution, frame-rate, and quality-preset notes attached to each tier
Do not compare only the processor and graphics card. An operating-system mismatch, insufficient RAM, an unsupported DirectX level, or a full drive can prevent installation or launch even when the headline components look adequate.

Check Windows edition, version, CPU, RAM, and architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Record Windows specifications, including the edition and version.
- Record Device specifications, including the processor name, installed RAM, and System type.
The System type entry distinguishes 32-bit from 64-bit Windows. If a game lists 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit installation does not satisfy that requirement, even if the processor itself is physically capable of 64-bit operation. Record the complete processor model rather than a marketing label such as “gaming laptop.”
Microsoft’s device-information guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so in 2026 you should also check whether the game publisher still lists your Windows 10 release as supported. Do not assume that an older Windows installation receives ordinary free support updates.

Check free storage on every relevant drive
- In Settings, open System > Storage.
- Read the available space on the drive where you intend to install the game.
- If the PC has more than one drive, open Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives and inspect those volumes as well.
Compare free space, not the drive’s total capacity. Leave room for the launcher, temporary installation files, updates, shader caches, and save data; a drive that barely clears the published number can run out of space during an update. If the requirement names an SSD, verify that the installation location is actually an SSD rather than assuming every internal drive has the same performance.
Check DirectX with DxDiag
- Search Windows for DxDiag and open the diagnostic tool.
- On the System tab, read the DirectX Version entry.
- Use the display information in DxDiag to help identify the installed graphics adapter and its memory details.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the latest DirectX version available for that Windows release, according to Microsoft. That does not mean every graphics card supports every feature required by a game. Compare the version in DxDiag with the game listing, then check the GPU model and feature support separately.

Identify the real graphics card and VRAM
Record the exact GPU model shown in DxDiag’s display information or in the computer maker’s documentation. Laptops can advertise a product family while shipping different graphics chips, and some systems have both integrated and discrete adapters. Do not infer the GPU from the laptop’s processor name or from a generic label such as “Intel graphics.”
Write down dedicated video memory (VRAM) when the requirement specifies it. Integrated graphics may report shared system memory rather than dedicated VRAM; that is not automatically equivalent to the amount of dedicated memory listed by a game. If the listing gives only a graphics-card class and no VRAM figure, compare the actual model against the publisher’s class and look for the game’s own performance notes rather than inventing a memory threshold.
Build a like-for-like comparison
Use one row for each requirement. “Meets” means your value is equal to or better than the listed target in the way the publisher intends; it does not mean that a faster part in one row cancels a shortfall in another.

When a game lists two tiers, keep your notes separate. A PC may satisfy the minimum CPU and RAM while missing the recommended GPU, producing a mixed result rather than a simple pass or fail.
How to read minimum and recommended targets
If your PC meets or exceeds recommended
This is the closest match to the publisher’s intended target. You can reasonably begin with the stated recommended preset, resolution, and frame rate, then adjust after observing actual performance. It still is not a guarantee for every area of an open world. Dense towns, weather effects, long-distance views, and traversal can stress a system differently from an early tutorial scene.
If your PC meets minimum but not recommended
Expect to use the minimum tier’s lower target. Reduce resolution or quality settings as the listing directs, and do not promise a locked frame rate unless the publisher explicitly states one. Performance evidence specific to that game and your hardware is more useful than a genre-wide assumption.
If your PC falls below a requirement
First identify the exact shortfall. A lack of storage can often be addressed by freeing space or adding compatible storage. A processor or graphics shortfall is not fixed by installing an SSD. An operating-system or DirectX mismatch may require a supported Windows installation or hardware that can provide the required feature level.
Example: reading the Hogwarts Legacy listing
The current Steam Support listing for the representative open-world action RPG Hogwarts Legacy shows why the performance note matters. These figures apply to that game’s PC listing and should not be generalized to every action RPG.

| DirectX | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Available storage | 85 GB | 85 GB |
| Storage type note | SSD preferred; HDD supported | SSD |
The table illustrates the difference between “runs” and “matches my target.” A machine that meets the minimum figures is being assessed against 720p, 30 fps, and low settings—not the recommended 1080p, 60 fps, and high-settings experience.
A practical check you can complete before buying
- Write down your target. Choose the resolution, frame rate, and quality preset you actually want.
- Open the current PC requirement page. Confirm that it is for the exact edition and platform.
- Record Windows details. Use Settings > System > About for edition, version, CPU, RAM, and architecture.
- Record storage. Use Settings > System > Storage, including other drives under Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives.
- Record DirectX. Open DxDiag and read the System tab.
- Record GPU and VRAM. Use DxDiag display information or the manufacturer’s documentation; verify whether the adapter is integrated or discrete.
- Compare every row. Mark each category against both minimum and recommended columns.
- Resolve the limiting row. Fix storage or software issues first; investigate hardware upgrades only when a specific component is below the target.
- Recheck after changes. A new drive, memory module, graphics card, or Windows installation can change the values you must compare.
What to do when results are mixed
Storage is the only shortfall
Free space on the intended drive, remove unused applications, or add a compatible internal drive if the computer supports one. Confirm the drive’s form factor and interface before purchasing. An SSD addresses a storage-capacity or explicit SSD requirement; it does not raise CPU or GPU performance.
RAM is below the listing
Close background applications only as a temporary diagnostic. If the game’s published requirement is higher than installed memory, check the PC maker’s limits, available slots, and supported memory type before considering an upgrade. Do not treat free disk space or virtual memory as a substitute for required physical RAM.
The GPU is below the target
Compare the exact model and VRAM, not just the brand or series name. A graphics upgrade must fit the case, power supply, motherboard interface, cooling system, and operating-system drivers. If the PC is a laptop, the graphics adapter is commonly not replaceable; lowering the target may be more practical than attempting a component change.
The CPU is below the target
Check whether the processor mismatch is against minimum or recommended requirements. A faster SSD cannot compensate for insufficient CPU capability. Desktop upgrades may require a compatible socket, firmware support, cooler, and power delivery; laptop processors are generally not user-upgradable.

Windows or DirectX does not match
Verify that the listed requirement is an operating-system version rather than a general family name. Install supported updates only when the PC hardware and edition qualify. If DxDiag reports an older DirectX version or the GPU lacks a required feature level, an operating-system change alone may not solve the problem.
Why automated “Can I Run It?” results need checking
Automatic detectors can save time, but they may read the wrong GPU, overlook a laptop’s integrated adapter, use an outdated requirement database, or report only a minimum pass. Use the official listing and your manually verified specifications as the final comparison. A detector also cannot know whether your real target is 30 fps at 720p or 60 fps at 1080p.
Validate performance after installation
Once the game is installed, start with the preset associated with the tier you meet. Play a representative save or area rather than judging only the opening scene. Watch for sustained frame-rate drops, stutter during traversal, texture pop-in caused by memory pressure, and system temperatures. Change one major setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment helps.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Lower output resolution when the GPU is saturated.
- Lower shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, or view distance when those settings dominate graphics load.
- Reduce background applications when system RAM is nearly full.
- Keep the game on the required drive type when the listing specifies an SSD.
- Update drivers or the game only through supported channels, then retest the same scene.
These observations are your system’s evidence, not a replacement for the publisher’s requirements. They help you choose a practical preset after the initial compatibility check.
Common mistakes that produce a false “yes”
- Using a genre average: Open-world games vary substantially; one action RPG’s requirement cannot stand in for another’s.
- Checking only CPU and GPU: RAM, DirectX, architecture, Windows version, and storage can each be decisive.
- Confusing total and free storage: Installation needs available space on the target volume.
- Reading a laptop family name as the GPU: Confirm the installed adapter and VRAM.
- Treating minimum as recommended: The two tiers can represent different resolutions, frame rates, and presets.
- Assuming an SSD fixes every slowdown: It cannot compensate for a CPU or GPU below the requirement.
- Ignoring edition and date: Use the current PC listing for the version you will install.
The decision in one sentence
Your PC is a plausible match when every listed category meets the game’s target tier and your intended resolution, frame rate, and quality preset align with that tier. If one category is below the requirement, identify that mismatch before spending money or promising performance; a published requirement is a screening target, not an individually tested guarantee.
