Use the publisher or storefront page for the exact game and edition, then classify your result as below minimum, meeting minimum, or meeting recommended. That comparison is a compatibility screen—not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or late-game experience.
The exact title matters. Requirements vary substantially between games, even within the grand-strategy genre, and storefront listings can change. The examples below are official Steam listings accessed on October 13, 2026; recheck the live listing for the game you intend to play.

1. Identify the exact game and version first
Do not start with a generic question such as whether a “gaming PC” can run grand strategy. Find the exact title, operating system and edition you intend to use. A Windows release can have different requirements from a macOS or Linux build, and expansions or major updates can alter the practical workload even when the storefront page keeps a similar headline.
- Open the game’s current publisher or storefront page.
- Confirm the platform, operating system and architecture listed for your purchase or installation.
- Record every requirement under both Minimum and Recommended, not just the processor and graphics card.
- Note the page’s date or update information, then check again immediately before installing because requirements are volatile.
Steam’s listings for Stellaris, Civilization VI and WARNO illustrate why a genre-wide threshold is misleading: each gives its own processor, graphics, memory, operating-system, DirectX, storage and network details. Even if two games look similar, their published targets can differ. Treat the page for the title you will actually launch as the authority for this check.

Be precise about platform wording. A requirement for Windows 10 Home 64 Bit is not automatically a statement that every Windows edition, older architecture or non-Windows build is supported. If a listing separates editions, versions or operating systems, make a separate note for the one you own. Do not substitute a console requirement, a cloud-streaming requirement or a different store page for the PC listing.
2. Find your PC’s specifications in Windows
Collect your hardware information before comparing it with the game page. Use more than one Windows screen because no single panel always exposes the CPU, GPU, memory and graphics API together. Record the exact model names and units, not a broad description such as “mid-range laptop.”
Basic details: Settings
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Record the processor name, installed RAM and System type. The latter identifies whether Windows is 64-bit and may also show the processor architecture.
- Record the Windows edition and version shown on the same page.
Menu labels can differ between Windows versions. A processor name such as an Intel or AMD model is more useful than a marketing label such as “Core i5 laptop,” because requirements are usually written against specific models or model families. Copy the complete model designation when possible, including suffixes that distinguish desktop, mobile or low-power variants.

Full inventory: System Information
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
msinfo32and press Enter. - In System Summary, record the OS name, system type, processor and installed physical memory.
- Use the navigation tree if you need additional device or component details.
System Information is useful when the Settings page omits a field or when you need a record that can be saved for troubleshooting. It gives you a consistent snapshot to compare with a support request or with a second PC. Check that the installed memory value is the total physical RAM, not merely the amount currently free.
Graphics and DirectX: DirectX Diagnostic Tool
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - On the System tab, record the operating-system and DirectX information.
- Open each Display tab and record the GPU name, display memory information and driver details. A laptop may expose more than one display adapter.
- Use Save All Information if you need a text report to compare with a requirement list or send to support.
Do not confuse the monitor’s resolution with the GPU model. The model and the stated video-memory field are what you compare with the game’s graphics requirement. If several Display tabs appear, list every adapter and identify which one is integrated and which one is discrete when Windows makes that distinction. A game selecting a different adapter can produce a result that does not match your assumption.
Live memory and GPU view: Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Performance.
- Open Memory for installed and currently used RAM.
- Open each GPU entry to see the adapter name and memory information.
Task Manager is especially helpful on systems with integrated and discrete graphics. Note which adapter a game is expected to use rather than assuming the first entry is the fastest one. Its live view can also reveal whether another program is consuming a large share of memory while you are checking, but the installed total remains the value to compare with the published RAM requirement.
Storage and network checks
In File Explorer, open This PC and check the free space on the drive where the game will be installed. Compare that free space with the game’s stated storage requirement; leave practical headroom for updates and the operating system instead of treating the requirement as a target to fill exactly. Record the drive and the available amount so you do not accidentally compare the free space on one volume with an installation planned for another.

If the listing specifies an internet connection or online services, verify that your connection and account setup satisfy that condition. A network requirement is separate from graphics performance. A PC can meet CPU and GPU targets and still fail to provide an online feature if the required connection or service is unavailable. Conversely, a network issue does not prove that the graphics hardware is inadequate.
3. Compare every requirement field
Create a two-column note: the game’s requirement on one side and your measured PC value on the other. Compare like with like rather than converting everything into a vague “powerful enough” score. Keep separate rows for minimum and recommended values so a pass in one tier is not mistaken for a pass in the other.
| Comparison axis | What to record from the game page | Where to check on your PC |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system and architecture | Supported Windows edition, version and 64-bit requirement | Settings > System > About or msinfo32 |
| Processor | Minimum and recommended CPU model examples | Settings > System > About or msinfo32 |
| Installed memory | RAM amount for each tier | Settings > System > About, msinfo32 or Task Manager > Performance > Memory |
| Graphics processor | GPU model examples and any stated video-memory requirement | dxdiag Display tab or Task Manager > Performance > GPU |
| DirectX | Required DirectX version | dxdiag System tab |
| Storage | Required free disk space | File Explorer > This PC |
| Network | Internet or online-service requirement, if listed | Your connection and the game’s online-service conditions |
When a page names an example CPU or GPU, compare the actual model, not only the manufacturer or product family. A newer-sounding name is not automatically equivalent, and an integrated GPU should not be treated as interchangeable with a separately listed graphics card without evidence from the game’s own guidance. “Intel,” “AMD,” or “NVIDIA” alone is not enough information to mark a row as passed.
Check units and qualifiers exactly. A requirement may refer to installed RAM, graphics memory, a particular Windows architecture, a DirectX version or free storage. Do not replace one with a related but different value: system RAM is not the same as GPU memory, and a supported operating system is not the same as a processor that happens to be fast enough.
4. Understand minimum versus recommended
Minimum and recommended are separate targets. Minimum describes the publisher’s lower compatibility tier; recommended is a higher target with different hardware expectations. Neither label is a universal benchmark for every grand strategy game.
| Steam listing example (Windows) | Minimum memory | Recommended memory | Other published differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stellaris | 4 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM | Separate processor and graphics examples; the listing also specifies operating system, DirectX, network, storage and sound requirements. |
| Civilization VI | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM | Separate processor and graphics specifications, plus DirectX and storage requirements. |
| WARNO | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM | Separate processor and graphics examples, plus operating-system, DirectX, network and storage requirements. |
For Stellaris, the accessed Windows listing gives Windows 10 Home 64 Bit and lists an Intel Core i3-530 or AMD FX-6350 among its minimum processor examples, with 4 GB RAM and named graphics examples. Its recommended tier uses different processor and graphics examples while still listing 4 GB RAM. The exact graphics models and all other fields belong to the live listing, so verify them before relying on this example.
Civilization VI and WARNO both show why memory alone cannot answer the question: each raises RAM from 4 GB minimum to 8 GB recommended while also changing processor and graphics specifications. A PC that passes one field can still miss another. Likewise, Stellaris demonstrates that a recommended tier can change CPU and GPU expectations without changing the listed RAM amount.

Use the tiers as labels for your result, not as promises about how the game will look or feel. “Meets minimum” means the values you recorded meet the lower published rows; it does not mean the system reaches the recommended rows. If the page gives different requirements by operating system, compare only with the rows for your actual platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Classify your result honestly
Below minimum in one or more fields
Treat the shortfall as unresolved compatibility risk. Identify the specific field—such as 32-bit Windows, insufficient RAM, an older CPU, an unsupported GPU, missing DirectX support or inadequate free space—rather than assuming a generic upgrade will solve everything. Check the current game guidance for that field and confirm that any proposed hardware is compatible with your motherboard, power supply, case and operating system before buying it.
Write down the first failing row and any other rows that fail. If the problem is storage, freeing space is a different remedy from replacing a graphics adapter. If the problem is the operating system or architecture, adding RAM does not address it. If the page lists a model-specific processor or GPU example and your model is unclear, seek the game’s current guidance instead of declaring an equivalence from a product name alone.
Meets minimum but not recommended
This means your recorded values meet the listed lower tier, subject to the game’s exact wording. It does not establish a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or smoothness. Grand strategy workloads can vary with map size, simulation speed, the number of units or characters, artificial-intelligence activity and the late-game state; a requirements page generally does not promise performance for those conditions.
Report this result precisely: for example, “passes the listed minimum CPU, RAM, GPU, DirectX and storage rows, but not the recommended GPU row.” That is more useful than saying the PC is simply “good enough.” It tells you what to investigate if the initial experience is disappointing.
Meets recommended
You match the publisher’s higher listed target for the fields you checked. That is the strongest result available from a requirements comparison, but it remains a published target rather than a measured performance guarantee. Drivers, background software, thermals, storage condition, display resolution and game updates can still affect the outcome.
Make sure you actually checked every row before using this label. A PC can meet the recommended CPU and GPU examples while missing free storage, the required Windows architecture or an online-service condition. Mark the result as “meets recommended for the checked fields” when a listing leaves a field unspecified.

6. Use a repeatable comparison worksheet
For each game, make a small record so that you can see the first failing field immediately:
- Write the game name, edition, platform and the date you checked its requirements.
- Copy the minimum and recommended values exactly, including model examples and units.
- Enter your own OS architecture, Windows version, CPU, RAM, GPU, stated video memory, DirectX version and free storage.
- Mark each row passes minimum, passes recommended or does not meet the listed value.
- Record network conditions separately if online play is involved.
- Keep the page’s caveats beside the numbers; do not detach a value from its operating-system, edition or platform qualification.
Add a notes column for uncertainty. For example, note that the page names example GPU models but does not state an equivalence for yours, or that a laptop has both integrated and discrete adapters. An unresolved note should remain unresolved; do not turn it into a pass simply to complete the table.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This method also works when comparing two PCs. Use the same axes for both systems, then report which tier each one reaches. Do not reduce the result to a single synthetic score when the game page supplies model-specific requirements. If PC A meets recommended graphics but PC B has more RAM, the answer still depends on every other row and on the target game’s own tiers.
7. Troubleshoot a disappointing result
The game will not launch
- Recheck the operating system, 64-bit status, CPU, GPU and DirectX fields against the current listing.
- Confirm that the installation drive has the required free space.
- On a laptop, use
dxdiagand Task Manager to determine whether the game is selecting an integrated adapter when a discrete adapter is available. - Save the
dxdiagreport and the game’s exact requirement page for support; model names are more useful than a description such as “old laptop.” - Check the network or online-service row if the failure affects an online feature rather than the initial launch.
The game starts but runs poorly
- Determine whether the PC only meets minimum or also reaches recommended; do not treat those outcomes as equivalent.
- Check which GPU is active and whether the display resolution is demanding for that adapter.
- Compare RAM, CPU and GPU separately. A graphics upgrade cannot correct a processor or memory shortfall by itself.
- Test the game’s own settings methodically and observe whether the problem is present immediately or appears as the simulation grows more complex. The published requirements do not guarantee a particular late-game frame rate.
- Record whether the issue is visual performance, simulation responsiveness, loading, connectivity or launch failure. Those symptoms point back to different rows in the comparison.
One field is unclear
Use msinfo32 for a fuller system record, dxdiag for graphics and DirectX, and Task Manager for live memory and GPU identification. If the game lists only example models, consult the publisher’s current guidance rather than guessing an equivalence from a product name.
If the requirement page and your report use different labels, preserve both names in your worksheet. That makes it possible to ask support a focused question about one CPU, GPU, memory value or operating-system qualification instead of presenting an unsupported overall verdict.
8. Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a genre average: There is no single grand-strategy specification. Stellaris, Civilization VI and WARNO publish different combinations of CPU, GPU and RAM targets.
- Checking only the GPU: CPU, RAM, Windows architecture, DirectX, storage and network conditions can each be the failing field.
- Reading minimum as recommended: The tiers are separate, even when one title happens to list the same RAM amount in both.
- Comparing product families: A model number and variant are more informative than “Core i5,” “Ryzen” or “gaming graphics.”
- Assuming a match guarantees smooth play: The listings do not promise frame rate, resolution, preset or late-game behavior.
- Ignoring multiple adapters: A laptop may report integrated and discrete GPUs; identify the adapter the game uses.
- Relying on an old screenshot: Requirements can change, so return to the current publisher or storefront page before installing.
9. What this check can—and cannot—tell you
A careful comparison can tell you whether your PC appears to satisfy the game’s published compatibility tiers and which component needs investigation. It cannot certify a frame rate, visual preset, loading time or smoothness because the cited listings do not make those promises. Requirements are also changeable: the Steam examples used here were accessed on October 13, 2026, and should be rechecked for the current version.
The practical answer to “Can my PC run this game?” is therefore conditional: name the exact game, collect the complete PC specification, compare every listed field, and report the highest tier you actually meet. If any single required field falls short, resolve that specific mismatch before treating the system as ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the requirements for one grand strategy game to judge another?
No. Requirements are title-specific. Use the current listing for the exact game, platform and edition you plan to install.
Does meeting minimum guarantee 60 frames per second?
No. Minimum and recommended listings are compatibility targets, not frame-rate, resolution or graphics-setting guarantees.
Which Windows tools show my GPU and DirectX version?
Run dxdiag and inspect the System and Display tabs. Task Manager’s Performance view can provide a second GPU and memory check.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I do if only one component is below the requirement?
Investigate that specific shortfall and verify compatibility before considering an upgrade. Do not assume a generic RAM or graphics-card purchase will fix a CPU, operating-system or DirectX mismatch.
Where do I find my processor, RAM and Windows architecture?
Open Settings > System > About, or run msinfo32 for a fuller System Summary. Record the exact processor model, installed memory, Windows version and system type.
How do I check whether I have enough storage?
Open File Explorer, choose This PC and check free space on the drive where the game will be installed. Compare that amount with the listing and leave room for updates and the operating system.
What if my laptop lists two graphics adapters?
Use dxdiag Display tabs and Task Manager > Performance > GPU to identify both. Determine which adapter the game is using; do not assume the first listed adapter is the fastest.
Is meeting the recommended tier a guarantee that the game will run smoothly late in a campaign?
No. It is the publisher’s higher listed target, not a measured promise. Simulation complexity, display resolution, drivers, background software, thermals and updates can still affect performance.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check the exact game’s current listing, record your CPU, RAM, GPU, Windows architecture, DirectX, storage and any network requirement, then compare every field against minimum and recommended rows. Report the tier you actually meet, and treat any match as compatibility guidance—not a guaranteed frame rate or late-game experience.
