Use the game’s current PC requirements—not its console-generation label—as the test. Find the requirements for the exact PC edition, record your computer’s CPU, graphics card, memory, Windows version, DirectX feature support and free storage, then compare each item against the performance tier you want. A game described as “new-generation” on a console does not, by itself, establish whether your PC can run its Windows version.
What “new console generation” tells you—and what it does not
Console generations describe the hardware platform for which a console game was designed or released. They do not translate into one universal PC specification. A PC version may use different graphics settings, resolutions, frame-rate targets, quality presets, asset-streaming behavior and hardware features from the console edition. Two games released for the same console generation can therefore have very different PC requirements.

The reliable question is not “Is my computer as powerful as the latest console?” It is “Does my computer meet the published requirements for this particular PC release at the performance level I want?” That requires the exact game, edition and store listing, plus the actual components installed in your computer.
- A console-generation badge is not a compatibility verdict for Windows.
- Matching one requirement, such as RAM, does not compensate for a weaker graphics card or unsupported feature level.
- Minimum specifications are a baseline, not a promise of a smooth experience.
- Requirements can change after launch, so check the current listing before buying or installing.
Find the correct PC requirements first
Start with the publisher’s page or the store page for the exact PC edition you intend to use. Do not use a console product page, a different edition, a sequel’s listing or an old screenshot of requirements. Steam advises checking a game’s System Requirements section and comparing hardware as well as operating-system compatibility. Xbox similarly directs players to the individual game listing because requirements vary by title.

Confirm the edition and platform
Check whether the listing is for a standard edition, complete edition, remaster, early-access build or a version supplied through a subscription. A complete edition may include higher-resolution textures or additional content that changes storage and graphics requirements. Also confirm that the listing is for Windows PC rather than a console, cloud-streaming or handheld version.
Copy every listed requirement
Record the operating system, processor, graphics card, graphics memory when stated, system RAM, storage capacity and storage type. Note any required graphics API or hardware feature, such as a particular DirectX level, shader model, ray-tracing capability or upscaling support. If the publisher gives several tiers, copy the resolution, frame rate and graphics preset attached to each tier rather than treating “minimum” and “recommended” as vague labels.
Look for notes beneath the table
Publishers sometimes specify that a requirement assumes an SSD, a particular Windows build, an internet connection, a one-time shader compilation step or a performance feature enabled. Those conditions are part of the requirement. A GPU that meets the model name but lacks the stated feature can still fail the test.

Use the computer you will actually play on. A model name such as a laptop family or prebuilt series is not enough because the same chassis can ship with different processors and graphics adapters.
Check the processor, memory and Windows edition
- Open Settings and select System, then About.
- Under Device specifications, record the processor model and installed RAM.
- Under Windows specifications, record the edition, version and system type. A 64-bit requirement needs a 64-bit Windows installation.
- For a second view, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and inspect the CPU and Memory pages.
Write down the full processor model, including its generation or series number. “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” alone is too broad for a meaningful comparison. Also note whether the computer has 8 GB, 16 GB or more memory and how much is currently available; the published requirement is usually total installed memory, while background programs consume part of it during play.

Identify every graphics adapter
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and record each adapter’s complete model name.
- Alternatively, open Task Manager, choose Performance, and select each listed GPU to see its model and dedicated memory.
Laptops often show both integrated and dedicated graphics. The game may launch on the weaker integrated adapter unless Windows or the graphics-driver control panel assigns it to the dedicated GPU. Record the adapter that will actually render the game, not merely the most powerful chip listed somewhere in the system.
Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool for DirectX information
Microsoft’s documented method is to search Windows for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select the System tab and read DirectX Version under System Information. The tool’s Display tabs also show the adapter name, driver details and feature information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSave or photograph the information if you are comparing a machine remotely. If the tool reports more than one display tab, inspect each adapter and match it to the GPU you intend to use.
Measure free storage and the drive type
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Record the free space on the drive where the game will be installed.
- To identify the drive type, open Task Manager, choose Performance, select the relevant disk and note whether Windows identifies it as an SSD or HDD.
Compare free capacity, not the disk’s total advertised size. Installation can require temporary working space in addition to the final installed size, and updates can temporarily need more room.
Compare requirements one component at a time
Create a side-by-side comparison instead of relying on an overall impression. Use the exact model and feature named by the publisher.

| Requirement area | What to record from the game listing | What to record from your PC | How to judge the match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows edition, architecture and minimum version | Installed edition, version and 64-bit or 32-bit status | Your installation must be supported; a newer version is not automatically compatible if a driver or feature is missing. |
| CPU | Exact processor model or class | Full processor model and generation | Compare the model’s real performance class, not just the “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” label. |
| GPU | Graphics-card model, graphics memory and feature requirements | Active adapter model, dedicated memory and supported features | The rendering adapter must meet both the model-level and feature-level requirement. |
| System RAM | Minimum or recommended installed memory | Total installed memory and available headroom | Meeting the number is necessary, but other running programs can still cause stutter or paging. |
| Storage | Required free capacity and, when stated, SSD or HDD type | Free space on the target drive and its type | Allow the stated capacity plus practical room for installation and updates. |
| Performance target | Resolution, frame rate and graphics preset attached to the tier | The target you are willing to use | Compare against the tier that reflects your expectations, not merely the lowest tier. |
When the listing names two alternative processors or graphics cards, either named option can satisfy that row, subject to the other requirements. When it lists an architecture or feature rather than a model, verify that feature directly; do not infer it from a similar product name.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Understand minimum, recommended and performance-target language
Minimum does not mean “smooth at any setting”
A minimum configuration generally describes the lowest tested or supported baseline for launching and playing under specified conditions. It may assume a low resolution, low preset and a particular frame rate. Steam cautions that systems at or near minimum requirements can encounter performance or launch issues. Treat a near-minimum match as a reason to lower expectations, close background software and check current patches—not as a guarantee.
Recommended is not a universal 4K standard
“Recommended” has meaning only alongside the resolution, frame rate and preset supplied by that publisher. One game may call 1080p at 60 frames per second on medium settings recommended; another may define recommended around 1440p or a different frame-rate target. Never convert a recommended label into an assumed 4K or ultra-quality promise.
Use the target you actually want
If you want a locked 60 fps at 1440p, compare your PC with a tier that specifies that outcome, if one exists. If the listing gives only minimum and recommended tiers, decide whether you are comfortable with the lower tier’s resolution and settings. A PC can technically run a game while failing to deliver the responsiveness or image quality you expect.
A concrete example: Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition
The official PC requirements for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition illustrate why the performance target must stay attached to the hardware numbers. The figures below are for that PC release and were listed on the PlayStation page checked in 2026; they are not a conversion rule for every new-generation game.

| Tier | Published performance target | Graphics card | Processor | Memory | Operating system and storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Average 720p, 30 fps, very low settings | GeForce GTX 1650 4 GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 4 GB | Core i3-8100 or Ryzen 3 1300X | 16 GB RAM | Windows 10 64-bit version 1909 or higher; 150 GB SSD space |
| Recommended | Average 1080p, 60 fps, medium settings | GeForce RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 5700 | Core i5-8600 or Ryzen 5 3600 | 16 GB RAM | Windows 10 64-bit version 1909 or higher |
Suppose your PC has 16 GB of RAM but a graphics card below the minimum row. The memory match does not make the system a minimum-spec machine. Conversely, matching the recommended GPU does not establish that the processor, Windows version or 150 GB SSD requirement is satisfied. Every applicable row must be checked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse DirectX’s installed version with GPU feature support
The DirectX version shown by dxdiag is useful, but it is not a complete graphics-compatibility test. Steam explains that a computer can have a suitable DirectX runtime installed while its graphics card lacks the hardware support for a required shader level. The runtime is software installed in Windows; feature support is a capability of the adapter and its driver.
When a listing specifies a shader model, DirectX feature level, ray tracing or another hardware function, check the GPU’s supported feature information and the publisher’s notes. Do not conclude that “DirectX 12” in dxdiag means every DirectX 12 game feature is available. If the requirement is unclear, treat the missing feature information as unresolved rather than assuming compatibility.
An exact pre-purchase and pre-installation workflow
- Name the game precisely. Write down the title, PC edition, store and current version or release page.
- Open the current PC requirements. Capture every OS, CPU, GPU, memory, storage, API and feature note.
- Record your Windows configuration. Use Settings > System > About and note the edition, version, architecture, processor and installed RAM.
- Record the rendering adapter. Use Device Manager > Display adapters, then confirm the active GPU and memory in Task Manager > Performance > GPU.
- Check DirectX and feature details. Run
dxdiag, read the System tab’s DirectX version and inspect the Display tab for adapter and feature information. - Check the destination drive. In File Explorer > This PC, verify free capacity; in Task Manager, check whether the drive is an SSD when the game requires one.
- Compare every row. Mark each item as meets, below, or not established. Do not let a strong match on one component hide a shortfall on another.
- Select the realistic performance tier. Use the publisher’s stated resolution, frame rate and preset to decide whether the expected experience is acceptable.
- Recheck immediately before purchase or installation. Requirements and compatibility notes can be updated, especially after patches or a new edition.
How to interpret an uncertain or borderline result
One item is below minimum
A shortfall in a required feature, operating-system architecture or graphics adapter is a hard warning. Do not assume that extra RAM or a faster processor will compensate for it. For a model-level shortfall, look for an official update to the requirements, a documented lower setting or a supported upgrade path rather than relying on an informal “it should run” claim.
Your model is not listed
Use the publisher’s alternatives only as reference points. A newer-sounding model is not automatically faster, and laptop versions can perform differently from desktop versions with similar names. Compare independent specifications and the exact feature support, while recognizing that a model not listed by the publisher remains an uncertainty.
Best Value
The store and publisher disagree
Prefer the most recent official page for the exact edition, and check whether one page describes a launch build while the other reflects a later patch. If the conflict cannot be resolved, use the stricter requirement for a buying decision and look for a developer update rather than treating the lower figure as authoritative.
The PC meets minimum but performance is poor
Confirm that the game is using the dedicated GPU, update the graphics driver through the GPU manufacturer’s supported channel, close intensive background applications, and verify that the display resolution and preset match the minimum tier. Check free storage and allow shader compilation or other first-launch processing to finish. If the game still fails to launch or remains unstable, consult the publisher’s support notes; the minimum row is not a universal trouble-free guarantee.
What a compatibility verdict can and cannot say
A careful verdict has three parts: whether the PC satisfies the listed prerequisites, which published performance tier it most closely matches, and what remains unknown. “Meets minimum” means the recorded components are at least at that row under its stated conditions. It does not promise a fixed frame rate in every scene, flawless drivers, or future compatibility after updates.
