Use Windows DxDiag to collect your actual specifications. Treat the result as a compatibility screen: meeting the minimum line does not guarantee a particular frame rate or consistently smooth play.
1. Start with the exact game and edition
There is no single “Bethesda PC requirement.” Each game has its own specification page, and different editions of the same game can require different hardware. The original Skyrim and Skyrim Special Edition, for example, have separate requirement lists. Starfield and Fallout 4 also have their own pages.

Write down the complete product name before checking anything:
- Game: for example, Starfield, Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.
- Edition: original release, Special Edition, Anniversary Edition or another separately listed version.
- PC store and installation: Steam or another authorized PC edition can have different installation steps, even when the game requirements are similar.
Do not copy the requirements from one title to another. An older game’s 8 GB memory requirement does not tell you whether a newer release will start, and a requirement for one edition of Skyrim does not automatically apply to another.

2. Open Bethesda’s current PC requirements page
Search Bethesda Support for the exact title followed by “PC requirements,” and use the page for that edition. The pages reviewed for this guide are Bethesda’s official support pages; most do not display an original publication year, so the figures should be treated as the publisher’s listed specifications rather than dated benchmark results. Recheck the page immediately before installing because requirements and compatibility notes can change.
Copy both the minimum and recommended sections into a note. Capture every category the page lists:
- Supported Windows version and whether the installation must be 64-bit.
- Processor model examples.
- System memory (RAM).
- Graphics processor (GPU) model examples and video-memory information when provided.
- DirectX version or another graphics API requirement.
- Free disk space and whether an SSD is required.
- Internet, account or launcher requirements.
A requirement page is a specification boundary, not a promise of a frame rate. Bethesda warns that a system close to the minimum can still experience performance problems.

3. What Bethesda’s published examples show
The following figures illustrate why the exact title matters. They are the requirements Bethesda lists, not independent tests or a prediction of the frame rate you will obtain.
| Title or edition | Requirements Bethesda lists | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Starfield | Minimum: Windows 10 version 21H1; AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K; 16 GB RAM; AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti; DirectX 12; 125 GB available storage; SSD required. | Recommended: updated Windows 10/11; AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K; 16 GB RAM; AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080; DirectX 12; broadband internet; 125 GB storage; SSD required. The page’s displayed publication year is unavailable. |
| Fallout 4 | Bethesda lists minimum and recommended CPU and GPU examples, 8 GB RAM, 30 GB free disk space and a 64-bit Windows requirement. | The support instructions also state that internet access and a free Steam account are required to install. Check the current page for the exact processor and graphics models. |
| Skyrim Special Edition | Bethesda lists separate minimum and recommended CPU and GPU examples, 8 GB RAM, 12 GB free disk space and a 64-bit Windows requirement. | The edition has its own DxDiag procedure and must not be checked against the original Skyrim page. |
| Original Skyrim | Bethesda publishes a separate list with lower and otherwise different requirements from Special Edition. | Use the original-game page if that is the edition you own; do not infer its specifications from Special Edition. |
Do not rank games as “easy” or “demanding” from isolated labels in this table. Bethesda does not provide a common benchmark or expected frame rate that would make such a ranking reliable.

4. Use DxDiag to see what your PC actually has
Windows includes DxDiag, a diagnostic utility that reports the operating system, processor, memory, graphics devices and DirectX information. Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4 support instructions use it to collect compatibility details.
- Press Windows+R to open the Run box.
- Type
DxDiagand press Enter. - If Windows asks whether it should check driver signatures, choose the option to continue. Wait for the tabs to finish loading.
- On the System tab, record the operating system, processor, installed memory and DirectX version.
- Open the Display or Render tabs. Record each GPU name and the displayed graphics-memory information.
- Click Save All Information, choose a location and save the text report. This gives you a complete reference when comparing several games or asking for support.
DxDiag reports installed hardware; it does not measure game performance. A report can show that your GPU meets a model-number requirement while cooling limits, drivers, power settings or a laptop’s active GPU still cause poor results.
5. Compare the specifications category by category
Operating system
Check the exact Windows edition, version and architecture. A 64-bit requirement is not satisfied by a 32-bit installation, even if the processor itself supports 64-bit operation. For Starfield, Bethesda’s minimum line names Windows 10 version 21H1; its recommended line names updated Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not treat those statements as a universal Windows policy for every Bethesda game.
Processor
Compare the complete CPU model, not just the brand, clock speed or number of cores. A Ryzen 5 in one generation is not automatically equivalent to a Ryzen 5 in another. When Bethesda gives two alternatives, meeting either listed processor family can satisfy that part of the screen, but it does not compensate for a graphics, memory or storage shortfall.
Memory
Use the installed system RAM shown by DxDiag. Close background applications before testing, but do not count temporary free memory as installed memory. Bethesda lists 16 GB for Starfield and 8 GB for both Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition in the cited pages. Those numbers apply to the named games only.

Graphics processor
Match the discrete or integrated GPU model listed in DxDiag against Bethesda’s examples. If the page supplies video-memory guidance, compare that separately. A laptop may report an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU; the game must use the capable device rather than the low-power one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDirectX
If the page lists a DirectX version, verify the version shown by DxDiag. Starfield lists DirectX 12. Having a compatible Windows version does not guarantee that an older graphics adapter supports all required DirectX features.
Storage capacity and type
Check the free space on the drive where the game will be installed, not merely the total capacity of another disk. Leave room for updates and temporary installation files. Starfield lists 125 GB available storage and requires an SSD. Fallout 4 lists 30 GB of free disk space, while Skyrim Special Edition lists 12 GB. Bethesda does not specify a particular SSD interface or replacement model for Starfield.
Internet and account requirements
Some support pages include online prerequisites. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 compatibility instructions say internet access and a free Steam account are required to install. Starfield’s recommended list includes broadband internet. Treat these as title-specific conditions, not a blanket requirement for every Bethesda release.
6. Interpret minimum versus recommended correctly
When you meet the minimum line
Minimum means the publisher considers the configuration eligible to run under its stated conditions. It does not specify a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or absence of stutter. If your CPU, GPU or storage is only just at the minimum, expect to adjust settings and investigate performance rather than assuming a smooth experience.

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads

- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
When you meet the recommended line
Recommended hardware gives you more headroom, but it is still not a benchmark promise. Resolution, refresh rate, graphics settings, driver versions, background workloads, thermal throttling and game updates all affect the result. A recommended comparison is a stronger starting point than minimum, not a guarantee of a particular number of frames per second.
When one category falls short
Record the specific mismatch. “The PC fails” is too vague to guide a fix:
- Storage shortfall: free space or drive type is insufficient.
- Operating-system shortfall: the installed Windows version or architecture is unsupported.
- Graphics shortfall: the adapter or required feature level is below the listed target.
- Memory or CPU shortfall: installed RAM or processor capability is below the stated line.
Only consider an upgrade after identifying that exact shortfall and confirming that your motherboard, power supply, case, cooling and operating system support the replacement.
7. Check which GPU a laptop game is using
A laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics can appear to meet a requirement while launching the game on the weaker adapter. Bethesda includes GPU-selection checks in its Starfield troubleshooting guidance.

- Start the game and check its video or graphics settings for the selected adapter.
- In Windows graphics settings, assign the game executable to the high-performance GPU when that option is available.
- Connect the laptop to AC power and use the manufacturer’s performance mode if one is provided.
- Restart the game after changing the adapter so the selection is applied.
These steps address a dual-GPU configuration; they do not replace checking the title’s own requirements.

8. If the PC meets the list but the game runs badly
Use the troubleshooting page for that specific game. For Starfield, Bethesda suggests checking the following areas:
- Confirm that the installation is on an SSD, as the requirement specifies.
- Install current graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer.
- Disable or test without overlays that inject themselves into the game.
- Verify or repair the game files through the store client.
- Confirm that the game is using the intended GPU, especially on a laptop.
- Check Windows and system power settings so the processor and GPU are not being restricted.
Those are Starfield-specific support steps. Do not present them as a universal cure for every Bethesda game, and do not assume that a driver update can repair a genuine hardware shortfall.
9. Decide whether an upgrade is appropriate
If storage is the only problem
An internal SSD may solve a capacity or drive-type mismatch for a title that requires one. Before buying anything, identify the supported drive interface, physical size, available slot and operating-system installation method in your PC or motherboard documentation. Bethesda does not name a required interface, capacity to purchase, brand or model for Starfield; the published requirement is 125 GB available space on an SSD.

If the GPU is below target
Check the power-supply wattage and connectors, case clearance, cooling and motherboard compatibility before selecting a replacement. A faster GPU that cannot receive adequate power or airflow is not a practical fix. On a laptop, the GPU is usually not replaceable, so verify the model before treating an upgrade as an option.
If RAM or the CPU is below target
Confirm the motherboard’s supported memory type, maximum capacity and available slots. CPU replacement can require a compatible socket, firmware update and stronger cooling. Upgrade only the component that the comparison identifies as the limiting requirement; there is no single upgrade that is right for every Bethesda game.
10. Common checking mistakes
- Using a generic Bethesda checklist: requirements are title- and edition-specific.
- Comparing only the GPU: Windows, CPU, RAM, DirectX and storage can independently block installation or performance.
- Confusing total disk capacity with free space: the requirement concerns available space on the installation drive.
- Ignoring an SSD condition: for Starfield, an SSD is an explicit requirement, not an optional optimization.
- Reading “minimum” as a frame-rate promise: Bethesda does not attach a guaranteed performance level to that label.
- Checking the wrong laptop GPU: the game may select integrated graphics even when a discrete adapter is installed.
- Relying on an obsolete launcher article: Bethesda states that the old Bethesda.net launcher ceased use on May 11, 2022; it is not a current compatibility checker.
11. A repeatable pre-install checklist
- Write down the exact Bethesda game and edition.
- Open that title’s current Bethesda Support PC-requirements page.
- Run
DxDiagwith Windows+R and save the report with Save All Information. - Compare Windows version and architecture.
- Compare the complete CPU model.
- Compare installed RAM.
- Compare every GPU and the video-memory information supplied by the page.
- Verify DirectX and any other graphics requirement.
- Check free space on the intended installation drive and confirm whether an SSD is required.
- Check internet, account and store prerequisites.
- Classify each result as minimum, recommended or shortfall; do not average the categories.
- If the game performs poorly despite a match, follow that game’s troubleshooting page, beginning with storage, drivers, files, GPU selection and power settings where Bethesda recommends them.
12. The practical conclusion
The reliable way to answer “Can my PC run this Bethesda game?” is a title-specific comparison, not a general guess based on the age of the computer. Bethesda’s official page supplies the target; DxDiag supplies your actual configuration. Check every listed category, keep minimum and recommended results separate, and treat any mismatch as a particular component problem. If all categories match but performance is poor, use the game’s own troubleshooting guidance—especially the SSD, driver, overlay, file-verification, GPU-selection and power checks Bethesda documents for Starfield.
Because the requirement pages can change and most displayed publication years are unavailable, revisit the current Bethesda page before each installation rather than relying on an old screenshot or a requirement copied from another edition.
