Check the operating system, 32-bit or 64-bit system type, processor, installed RAM, graphics device and any stated video-memory or feature requirement, DirectX version when listed, available storage, and any online or controller condition in the notes.
Meeting every minimum item means your computer matches the publisher’s stated baseline on paper. It does not prove a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, loading time, or level of stability on your machine. Recommended requirements and game-specific performance notes are better clues, but they are still not a hands-on test of your PC.

Why “2D” does not answer the compatibility question
A game’s visual style is not a system specification. A simple-looking platformer, strategy game, visual novel, or pixel-art title can use a modern graphics API, large textures, demanding effects, high-resolution assets, extensive simulation, or a sizeable installation. Another game with similar-looking artwork may have much lower requirements. The only dependable starting point is the target game’s current official store listing or publisher support page.

Do not substitute a general rule such as “2D games run on any computer.” Requirements differ by title, platform, edition, and update. A listing can also impose conditions that are easy to miss in a headline minimum, such as a 64-bit operating system, a specific DirectX feature level, a named graphics device, free space on the installation drive, an internet connection, or controller support.

Use the process below before purchasing. It separates a paper compatibility check from a performance prediction and gives you a way to investigate borderline cases without buying first.
Step 1: Capture the game’s complete, current requirements
Open the game’s official store page and, if necessary, the publisher’s support page for the exact PC edition you intend to buy. Record the minimum and recommended tiers separately. Requirements can change after launch, so use the page that is current when you are deciding, not an old forum post or a requirement copied from another platform.
Record these fields
- Operating system: Note the named Windows version and whether the listing requires 64-bit Windows.
- Processor: Copy the model or processor family exactly. A processor generation, core configuration, or architecture condition can matter more than a broad brand label.
- Memory: Write down the required RAM for minimum and recommended play.
- Graphics device: Record every named graphics card or integrated graphics model. Also copy any stated video-memory amount, graphics feature, shader model, or feature-level condition.
- DirectX: Note the version if the page lists one. Treat it as a separate check from the graphics-card model.
- Storage: Record the required available space, not merely the download size. Space may be needed on the particular drive where the game will be installed.
- Additional conditions: Read notes for internet access, a launcher, a controller, display limitations, account requirements, or other platform-specific conditions.
Keep the two tiers in separate columns in a note or worksheet. A PC that reaches recommended RAM but misses the minimum graphics requirement has not passed the minimum check.
How to read “minimum” and “recommended”
Minimum is the publisher’s baseline for launching or operating the game under the conditions it defines. The page may attach a resolution, quality preset, or frame-rate target to that tier; if it does, preserve that qualification rather than treating minimum as a universal performance promise.
Recommended is a second target, usually intended to provide a better visual preset, resolution, or general experience. It is not a guarantee either. Some listings give no frame-rate or resolution target, while others state one explicitly. Use only the target written for that game.
For example, the Steam DiRT 4 listing (released June 9, 2017) gives a Windows minimum of a 64-bit processor and operating system, 4 GB of RAM, named graphics devices with 1 GB of VRAM and DirectX 11, and 50 GB of available storage. Its recommended tier raises the processor, RAM, and graphics targets while retaining 50 GB of storage. The listing says: “Please note for your computer to meet the minimum requirements it must match or better all elements of the listed spec.” That sentence describes that listing’s requirement policy; it is a useful way to perform the comparison, not a universal guarantee for every game.
A different example shows why the notes matter. Square Enix’s PC Steam requirements page specifies Windows 10/11 64-bit, a processor, RAM, graphics, DirectX 12, and 10 GB of storage. Its minimum notes target 60 FPS at 1280×720 on Low, while its recommended notes target 60 FPS at 1920×1080 on Highest and add a RAM note for Intel GPU use. Those figures belong to that specific game and page; they cannot be applied to 2D games generally.

Step 2: Find your Windows version, system type, processor, and RAM
Windows 10 and Windows 11 expose the core details you need without installing a diagnostic utility.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Read the Windows edition and version, processor, installed RAM, and System type. The system type identifies whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Copy the information into the same worksheet as the game’s requirements.
Compare the actual Windows edition and system type with the listing, not just the processor name. If the game requires a 64-bit operating system and your About page reports 32-bit Windows, a processor or RAM match does not fix that mismatch.
Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, although a Windows 10 PC continues to work. That support date is not itself a game’s compatibility test. Check the target game’s stated operating-system support and consider the maintenance status of the Windows installation separately. A listing that says Windows 10/11 is different from one that requires a newer release or a particular 64-bit environment.
Step 3: Check free space on the correct drive
Use Settings > System > Storage to see available disk space. If your PC has more than one drive, check the drive on which the game will actually be installed. A computer can have plenty of free space overall while the selected installation drive is short of the game’s requirement.

Treat the number as a condition at installation time, not as a permanent guarantee: updates, save data, shader caches, and other software can consume space later. Do not replace an “available storage” requirement with the game’s compressed download size unless the listing explicitly does so.
If the store page gives no separate installation-drive instruction, the practical check is still to leave the stated amount available on the destination drive and verify that the launcher can select that drive. Storage capacity alone does not say anything about frame rate; it answers whether the installation has room.
Step 4: Verify DirectX when the game lists it
Only perform this comparison when the game’s requirements name a DirectX version or feature. Microsoft Support’s documented path is:

- Search Windows for
dxdiag. - Open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- On the System tab, read DirectX Version under System Information.
Microsoft states: “In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select the System tab, then check the DirectX version under System Information.” Microsoft also says Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include the latest DirectX version available for those operating systems. That does not erase a game’s separate graphics requirement. A game can require a particular DirectX version plus a graphics device or feature level capable of using it.

Write down both results: the DirectX version reported by Windows and any graphics feature condition printed on the game page. Do not infer that a newer-looking processor or a successful dxdiag launch automatically satisfies every DirectX feature requirement.
Step 5: Identify the graphics device actually used for games
The processor line in Settings does not identify the graphics hardware. A PC may have integrated graphics built into the processor, a separate graphics card, or both. Laptops commonly expose an integrated device and a discrete device, and the game may be assigned to one of them.
What to compare
- Match the graphics-device model against the model or model family listed by the game.
- Check any required VRAM or shared-memory figure stated by the listing.
- Check named graphics APIs, feature levels, shader models, or other conditions separately from the model name.
- On a laptop with two graphics devices, identify which device the game uses if Windows or the system’s graphics settings expose that information.
Do not assume that “integrated graphics” is one performance level. Integrated devices vary substantially, and a laptop variant can differ from a desktop part with a similar name. Conversely, do not assume that a discrete GPU automatically meets a requirement if its model, memory, or feature support falls short.
If the listing names several acceptable devices, compare your exact model to that list. If it gives only a broad family or leaves an integrated-GPU question unresolved, treat the result as a close call and seek model-level evidence before buying rather than declaring a pass from the processor name alone.

Use a row-by-row comparison. The first failed minimum item is enough to classify the PC as not meeting the publisher’s stated baseline, even if every other row is stronger.

When a page gives minimum and recommended values, create two comparison columns rather than blending them. A “minimum pass” means every minimum row is met or exceeded. A “recommended pass” means every recommended row is met or exceeded. If the listing says a particular target resolution, preset, and frame rate, attach those words to the result.

What a successful paper check tells you—and what it cannot
What it establishes
If your PC meets or exceeds every listed minimum item, it meets the publisher’s stated baseline on paper. If it also meets the recommended tier, it matches the publisher’s higher hardware target on paper. If the page specifies a performance target, you can report that you meet the hardware tier associated with that target, provided all its conditions are satisfied.
What it does not establish
- It does not prove a particular FPS on your exact machine.
- It does not guarantee a specific resolution, preset, frame-time consistency, or absence of stutter.
- It does not account for every background workload, driver state, thermal condition, laptop power mode, or game update.
- It does not prove that a game will launch when a requirement is ambiguous or when your hardware is an unlisted variant.
Requirements are publisher guidance, not an individualized benchmark. Recommended specifications are generally a better indication of the intended experience than minimum specifications, but they remain game-specific guidance. Do not turn a requirement table into a promise that your PC will deliver the same result as another computer with a similarly named part.

When your model is not listed
Recheck the exact official requirement page and search its notes for an explanation of supported integrated graphics, memory, or feature levels. If the page does not settle the question, look for reliable, model-specific gameplay evidence for the exact GPU and laptop variant. Evidence for a different game is not a substitute: one title’s requirements cannot certify another title.
When store and publisher pages disagree
Compare the platform and edition first. A console, macOS, Linux, or different PC build may have different requirements. Then use the current official publisher information and the store page for the edition you will install, noting the date and any revision. If the conflict remains, treat it as unresolved rather than choosing the lower number simply because it is more convenient.
When the graphics device is integrated
Identify the precise integrated-GPU model and any memory or feature condition. “Integrated” alone is not enough to pass or fail. For a laptop with integrated and discrete devices, check which one the game is configured to use and compare that device to the listing.
When only a recommended item is missing
Your PC may still meet the minimum tier, but you should not describe it as meeting recommended requirements. Use the game’s own minimum performance note, if present, to set expectations and avoid promising a quality preset or frame rate the page does not guarantee.
A practical pre-purchase worksheet
Copy this checklist into a note and fill it from the official page and your PC:
- Game and edition: record the exact PC edition and the date you checked.
- Minimum tier: write the OS and 32/64-bit condition, CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM or feature requirement, DirectX, storage, and additional notes.
- Recommended tier: record the same fields separately.
- PC About page: copy Windows version, system type, processor, and installed RAM.
- Storage page: record free space on the intended installation drive.
dxdiag: record DirectX Version when the game lists DirectX.- Graphics device: identify the exact integrated or discrete device used for the game and compare its model, memory, and features.
- Result: mark each minimum row as pass, fail, or unclear; repeat for recommended.
- Unclear rows: resolve them with the current official notes or exact-model evidence before buying.
A result marked “unclear” is not a pass. It means the available requirement information does not establish compatibility for that component.
Worked examples of interpreting requirements
Example: all minimum rows pass, recommended graphics does not
Suppose the game lists 4 GB RAM and a lower graphics target as minimum, but 8 GB RAM and a stronger GPU as recommended. Your PC has 8 GB RAM but the lower, accepted minimum GPU. The correct conclusion is that it meets the listed minimum tier and misses the recommended GPU tier. You cannot claim recommended-level performance without a game-specific statement supporting that conclusion.
Example: CPU and RAM pass, 64-bit OS fails
A PC may have the listed processor and more than enough RAM while running 32-bit Windows. If the game requires a 64-bit operating system, the minimum comparison fails at the OS row. The other matches do not cancel that requirement.

Example: storage fails on the selected drive
A computer with two drives may show enough free space in total, but the game launcher is pointed at a drive with less than the listed requirement. Move the installation destination or free space on that drive; do not treat unrelated free space as satisfying the installation condition.
Example: DirectX version is present but the GPU feature is not established
dxdiag may show the required DirectX version while the game’s page also requires a particular graphics feature or named device. The DirectX row alone is not sufficient. The graphics feature row remains unresolved until the actual device is checked.
Common mistakes that produce false confidence
- Using another game’s requirements: Similar art styles do not make requirements interchangeable.
- Checking only CPU and RAM: Graphics, operating system, DirectX, and storage can independently block compatibility.
- Reading only the headline minimum: Notes may contain the 64-bit, VRAM, online, controller, or performance condition that changes the result.
- Confusing download size with required space: Use the stated available-storage figure.
- Assuming a newer DirectX version solves every issue: Graphics hardware features still need to satisfy the page.
- Treating minimum as a frame-rate promise: A minimum tier is a publisher baseline, not a personalized benchmark.
- Ignoring laptop graphics switching: The device used by the game may not be the device you first identify.
- Relying on an old listing: Updates and edition changes can alter requirements.
When a hardware upgrade is the next question
Do not buy a generic graphics card, RAM kit, or storage drive merely because a game is labeled 2D. First identify the specific failed requirement and verify that a proposed change fits the entire PC: operating-system support, power, physical space, memory compatibility, and the game’s exact graphics condition all matter. Without the PC model and the target game’s current requirement page, recommending a particular component would be guesswork.
If the shortfall is an unsupported operating system or 32-bit installation, adding RAM does not address it. If the shortfall is storage, more capacity on the wrong drive may not help the installation path. If the shortfall is an unlisted integrated GPU, the correct next step is to resolve the model-level compatibility question rather than assume that any upgrade will produce a known result.
Final decision rule
Buy with the strongest confidence when the game’s current official page, your Windows About and Storage pages, dxdiag where relevant, and your exact graphics-device information agree on every minimum requirement. Treat the recommended tier as a separate, higher target. If any row is unclear, resolve that row before purchasing; if a row fails, the PC does not meet the publisher’s stated minimum on paper. Even a complete match remains a compatibility check, not a guarantee of a particular FPS, resolution, graphics setting, or stability on your individual machine.
