How to check whether your Office LTSC 2021 installation is still receiving security updates

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Open Word or Excel, go to File > Account, and record the version and build shown under Product Information and About. Compare that number with the newest row in Microsoft’s Volume licensed versions of Office LTSC 2021 update-history table. That is the correct test for an LTSC volume-license installation. Do not use the separate retail Office 2021 table.

There is an important date qualification: Microsoft lists October 13, 2026 as Office LTSC 2021’s end of support. Since that date has passed, a matching build proves only that your installation reached the latest published release in the history; it does not mean Microsoft will continue issuing new security updates.

The two checks you must perform

“Up to date” has two different meanings for Office LTSC 2021:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Build currency: Is the installed version equal to the newest version listed for the volume-licensed LTSC 2021 channel?
  • Product support: Is Microsoft still providing security updates for the product at all?

Use the first check to find out whether a device missed an available release. Use the second to determine whether another release can be expected. Office LTSC 2021 reached its stated support end on October 13, 2026. Microsoft’s lifecycle notice says: “After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for this product.”

Consequently, an installation can be current against the historical build table and still be outside Microsoft’s supported security-update lifecycle.

Check the installed version in Word or Excel

  1. Open Word or Excel on the computer you want to verify.
  2. Select File.
  3. Select Account. In some older layouts this area is labeled Office Account.
  4. Under Product Information, locate the About section.
  5. Record the complete version and build number, including the four-part build value if it is shown.

The version displayed in this screen identifies the Click-to-Run build installed on that device. Record it exactly before comparing it with Microsoft’s history. A partial number such as “2108” is less useful than the full entry, for example “Version 2108 (Build 14334.20918).”

What to write down

Create a small verification record for each device or group of devices:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Value to record Why it matters
Office application Word, Excel, or another LTSC app Confirms which installation you inspected.
Product edition Office LTSC 2021 Prevents comparing an LTSC install with retail Office 2021 or Microsoft 365 Apps.
Version For example, 2108 Matches the version column in Microsoft’s history.
Build For example, 14334.20918 Distinguishes individual cumulative releases within a version.
Inspection date Your local date Shows when the status was checked.

Compare with the correct Microsoft update-history table

Open Microsoft’s Office LTSC 2021 update-history page and find the table headed Volume licensed versions of Office LTSC 2021. Compare your recorded version and build with the newest dated row in that table.

Microsoft’s table showed Version 2108 (Build 14334.20918), released September 16, 2026, as the newest volume-licensed LTSC 2021 entry when this article’s information was assembled. Build histories can change as Microsoft corrects or republishes release information, so treat the live table—not a copied number—as the authority for the comparison.

How to interpret the result

What you see Meaning Action
Your version and build match the newest LTSC volume-license row The installation has the latest release represented in that history. Record the check date, then evaluate the separate end-of-support status.
Your build is older than the newest LTSC row The device is behind the published release history. Use Update Options > Update Now, or ask the administrator to deploy the approved build.
Your number does not appear in the LTSC volume-license table You may be looking at the wrong edition, an unusual deployment, or an incomplete record. Confirm the edition and obtain the deployment details from IT before drawing a conclusion.
The table has a newer-looking retail Office 2021 entry That is a different licensing and update-history category. Ignore it for an LTSC volume-license comparison.

Use Update Now to request a check

If your build is behind, or you want the installation to look for an available release, use the in-app command:

  1. Open Word or Excel.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Select Update Options.
  4. Select Update Now.
  5. Allow the check or installation to finish, then close and reopen an Office app if prompted.
  6. Return to File > Account and record the version and build again.

Update Now asks Click-to-Run to check the update location configured for that installation. It is not a support-status lookup and it does not override an organization’s deployment policy. A successful message means the configured source did not offer a newer applicable build at that moment; it does not establish that Microsoft will publish future LTSC 2021 security fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why Update Now may not change the build

Microsoft documents the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN) as the default source for Click-to-Run updates. An organization can instead point clients to an internal shared folder, and administrators can control rollout centrally, including through Configuration Manager. If the device uses an internal source, clicking Update Now checks that source rather than downloading directly from Microsoft’s CDN.

A build that remains unchanged can therefore have several explanations:

  • The installed build already matches the newest release available from the configured source.
  • The organization has staged the release but has not approved it for this device or deployment ring.
  • The client is configured for an internal share that has not been populated with the newer build.
  • Network, permissions, policy, or Click-to-Run service problems prevented the check.
  • The product has reached end of support, so no later LTSC 2021 security build exists to install.

When the computer is managed by an organization

On a personally administered computer, you can normally run the version check and Update Now yourself. On an organization-managed computer, the visible Office controls may not reflect the complete policy. Ask the administrator or desktop-management team to confirm four details:

  1. Edition and channel: Confirm that the installation is volume-licensed Office LTSC 2021, not retail Office 2021 or Microsoft 365 Apps.
  2. Update source: Confirm whether the client uses the Office CDN or an internal shared folder.
  3. Deployment policy: Ask which build has been approved and whether updates are staged by department, device group, or maintenance window.
  4. Lifecycle plan: Ask how the organization is handling the October 13, 2026 end of support.

Give IT the exact version, build, device name, inspection date, and any message shown after Update Now. Those details let an administrator distinguish a missing deployment from an unsupported product.

Evidence that helps an administrator

  • A screenshot or transcription of the About version and build.
  • The date and time when Update Now was selected.
  • The result shown by Office, including any error text.
  • Whether other Office applications on the same computer show the same build.
  • The network or VPN state if the organization uses an internal update share.

Do not delete Office folders or change registry settings merely to force an update. Those actions can break the managed deployment and remove information IT needs to diagnose the source or policy.

How Click-to-Run builds relate to security updates

Office LTSC 2021 uses Click-to-Run. Microsoft describes its security and quality releases as cumulative builds: a newer build includes the earlier security and quality fixes for that release channel. You do not need to install every historical build one by one when the current applicable build is deployed.

That cumulative model makes the version-history comparison useful. If your build equals the newest row for the correct LTSC table, it contains the fixes represented by that row. If it is older, the device may be missing fixes included in later cumulative releases—subject to the product’s support lifecycle and the organization’s deployment policy.

CDN delivery versus an internal share

Update arrangement How the client obtains a build Who controls availability
Office CDN Click-to-Run checks Microsoft’s hosted content by default. Microsoft publishes the release; local policy can still control timing.
Internal shared folder The client checks the organization’s configured share. Administrators must obtain new builds and copy them to the share.
Central management, including Configuration Manager The management system deploys or schedules the approved package. The organization controls approval, rings, maintenance windows, and targeting.

This distinction explains why two computers with the same edition can show different builds on the same day. Their configured source or deployment assignment may differ.

End of support: what October 13, 2026 changes

Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement sets Office LTSC 2021’s end of support at October 13, 2026. After that date, Microsoft says it will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for the product.

The date changes how you should report the result of a version check:

  • Before the date: A build behind the newest table entry indicated that an available cumulative release had not yet been applied, while a matching build indicated currency against the published history.
  • On or after the date: A matching build still indicates the latest release listed in the history, but it does not indicate continuing security coverage. The product itself is out of support.

Do not describe a post-October 13, 2026 installation as “secure because it is fully patched.” The defensible statement is narrower: “The installation matches the latest build listed for volume-licensed Office LTSC 2021, and that product reached end of support on October 13, 2026.”

What end of support does not do

End of support does not automatically uninstall Office, disable Word or Excel, or change the build already installed. Existing documents and applications may continue to work. The change is Microsoft’s support commitment: new security fixes, bug fixes, and technical support are no longer promised for LTSC 2021 after the stated date.

Organizations should treat continued operation as a risk-management decision rather than proof that the software remains supported. Document the exception, identify exposed devices, and assign an owner and target date for migration.

Choosing a supported path after LTSC 2021

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance points organizations toward Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC 2024. The suitable path depends on licensing, connectivity, device purpose, and how much feature change the environment can accept.

Consideration Microsoft 365 Apps Office LTSC 2024
Commercial model Subscription-based service. On-premises volume-license release.
Feature cadence Continuously updated, with new features released as frequently as monthly according to Microsoft’s guidance. Feature set is fixed at the release baseline rather than continuously adding features.
Deployment orientation Cloud-oriented management and service model. On-premises deployment for organizations that need a fixed release.
Typical fit Organizations able to manage regular feature and security changes. Regulated, manufacturing, process-control, specialist, or otherwise constrained systems that cannot accept frequent feature updates or reliable internet connectivity.
Timing detail Ongoing service updates. Initial feature set dates to September 2024.

These are decision axes, not an automatic recommendation. Confirm application compatibility, add-in support, identity requirements, network design, licensing rights, and the organization’s retention or regulatory obligations with the administrator or licensing provider.

Questions to answer before migration

  • Can the devices connect to required Microsoft services, or must they remain isolated?
  • Can users and line-of-business applications tolerate feature changes during the support lifecycle?
  • Does the organization need subscription licensing or a fixed on-premises volume-license release?
  • Which Office add-ins, macros, templates, and integrations require validation?
  • What deployment tool will stage, test, and roll back the replacement?
  • What is the support end date for the selected replacement and who will monitor it?

A practical verification worksheet

Use this sequence when auditing one computer or a fleet:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify: Open Word or Excel and capture the edition, version, and full build under File > Account.
  2. Classify: Confirm that the installation is volume-licensed Office LTSC 2021.
  3. Compare: Use only the Volume licensed versions of Office LTSC 2021 table and compare the full version/build with its newest dated row.
  4. Request: If behind, run File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
  5. Recheck: Close and reopen an Office app if requested, then capture the build again.
  6. Escalate: If no change occurs, ask IT which source, policy, and deployment schedule apply.
  7. Assess lifecycle: Mark the device as outside Microsoft support from October 13, 2026, regardless of whether its build matches the final listed row.
  8. Plan: Record the chosen migration path, owner, compatibility testing, and target date.

Common mistakes that produce a false “up to date” conclusion

Comparing with retail Office 2021

Microsoft publishes separate tables for retail Office 2021 and volume-licensed Office LTSC 2021. The retail table may show a different or newer-looking value, but it is not the comparison for an LTSC volume-license installation.

Checking only the version year

“Office 2021” does not identify the precise build. Record the version and complete build number shown in the About section.

Treating Update Now as a lifecycle test

Update Now checks the configured content location. It does not tell you whether Microsoft still supports the product. Always perform the version comparison and lifecycle check separately.

Assuming a successful click means a new update was installed

The command can complete without changing the build because the source has no newer approved package, the device is already current, or the product has reached the end of its update lifecycle. Reopen the Account page and verify the number.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Calling the final build permanently current

The newest row in a release-history table is time-sensitive. Use the live Microsoft table when auditing a device, and retain the date of your check in the record.

How to report the result

A concise, accurate report should include both build status and lifecycle status. For example:

“Word reports Office LTSC 2021 Version 2108, Build 14334.20918. This matches the newest entry currently listed in Microsoft’s volume-licensed Office LTSC 2021 history (the listed release date is September 16, 2026). Office LTSC 2021 reached end of support on October 13, 2026, so Microsoft no longer promises new security updates for this product. Migration planning is required.”

If the device is behind, replace the first sentence with the actual recorded build and state whether Update Now was run. If the computer is managed, name the configured source and deployment owner once IT confirms them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for an October 2026 check

Use File > Account > Product Information > About to capture the full build, compare it with Microsoft’s Volume licensed versions of Office LTSC 2021 table, and use Update Options > Update Now only to check the source configured for that installation. Then apply the lifecycle test: Office LTSC 2021 ended support on October 13, 2026. A matching final build is a historical currency result, not an assurance of ongoing security updates.
