The current Dortania NVIDIA GPU Buyers Guide, last updated December 8, 2025, says that no NVIDIA GPUs are currently supported in macOS. Its unsupported list includes every RTX 20xx (Turing), RTX 30xx (Ampere), and RTX 40xx (Lovelace) card.
You should still check the exact model and the macOS release you intend to install. That confirms whether you have an RTX card or an older GTX card being described loosely, and it prevents a model-name or architecture mistake. If your goal is accelerated macOS graphics, plan around a supported GPU family rather than an RTX card.

The compatibility result for RTX cards
For a Hackintosh, the important question is not whether a card is fast, works in Windows, or has an official NVIDIA driver for another operating system. The question is whether macOS has a supported graphics-driver path for that exact GPU generation.

Dortania’s current NVIDIA guide states that there are no currently supported NVIDIA GPUs in macOS. It specifically lists the following RTX generations as unsupported in every macOS version:

- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
| Marketing family | GPU architecture | macOS status in the current guide |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 20xx | Turing | Unsupported |
| RTX 30xx | Ampere | Unsupported |
| RTX 40xx | Lovelace | Unsupported |
The source for all three rows is the Dortania NVIDIA GPU Buyers Guide (last updated December 8, 2025). Because the guide gives no supported macOS release for these RTX generations, changing from one macOS release to another does not turn an RTX 2060, 3060, 3080, 4090, or another card in those families into a supported Hackintosh GPU.
What “compatible” should mean in a Hackintosh
A card can produce a picture and still fail the practical test that matters for a Hackintosh: supported macOS graphics acceleration. When you assess a GPU, separate these questions:
- Will the computer display an image? This is only a basic output question.
- Does the target macOS release support the GPU generation? This is the compatibility question answered by the GPU guide.
- Is the support native or dependent on a legacy driver? Older NVIDIA families may have a narrow macOS ceiling and a separate Web Driver requirement.
A Windows driver, CUDA feature, ray-tracing capability, or strong gaming performance does not establish macOS support. The current guide’s status is the deciding evidence for an RTX card.

Use this process before you build or reinstall a Hackintosh. It is designed to catch the two common errors: identifying a card only by a broad marketing label and checking it against the wrong macOS release.
1. Record the complete model name
Read the model printed on the card, its box, or the system’s hardware inventory utility. Record the full designation, including the number and suffix. “RTX 30 series” is less precise than “RTX 3060,” and a generic label such as “GTX 600 series” is not enough for an older card.
Also record the GPU core or architecture when your inventory utility reports it. The exact die can matter because two cards sold under similar names may belong to different architectures or have different support conditions.
2. Write down the macOS release you intend to run
Compatibility is always relative to a macOS release. Put the intended version beside the card name before opening a buyers guide. A card that reaches one older release may have no path to a newer one, and a legacy driver requirement can limit the usable installation even further.

- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
3. Check the generation-specific section of the NVIDIA guide
Open the NVIDIA GPUs | GPU Buyers Guide and find the section for the architecture you recorded. Compare both the exact family and the macOS release. Do not stop at a search result or at the “RTX” label; use the generation-specific entry.
4. Apply the RTX result
If the card is an RTX 20xx/Turing, RTX 30xx/Ampere, or RTX 40xx/Lovelace model, the current guide marks it unsupported. There is no supported macOS release listed for those families. Treat that as a stop condition for a build whose objective is accelerated macOS graphics.
5. Recheck if the label says GTX or gives an ambiguous series
If the card turns out to be a GTX-family model, do not apply the RTX result and do not assume all GTX cards behave alike. Continue to the legacy sections of the guide, where architecture, GPU core, operating-system ceiling, and driver requirements are all significant.
Why the model name alone can mislead you
Older NVIDIA cards contain several architecture-specific exceptions. Dortania calls out GTX 660 core variants and the architecture distinctions among the GTX 745, GTX 750, and GTX 750 Ti. Those names do not identify one uniform compatibility class.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe same guide also identifies a Pascal GTX 1060 variant exception. The word “variant” matters: the exception is not permission to treat every GTX 1060 board as interchangeable. Record the exact GPU core and compare that entry with the guide’s wording.
This is why a compatibility check should preserve three fields rather than only a retail name:
- Exact board/model: the full designation printed on the hardware or reported by the inventory utility.
- Architecture and core: the generation and, where available, the specific die.
- Target macOS release: the version you will actually install.
Legacy NVIDIA ceilings: what they do and do not tell you
Older GTX support does not create an RTX exception. It is a separate, model-specific path documented in the legacy portions of the guide.

| NVIDIA family | Highest macOS ceiling stated by the guide | Driver condition or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Kepler | Big Sur | Monterey no longer supports it. |
| Maxwell | High Sierra 10.13.6 | Requires NVIDIA Web Drivers. |
| Pascal | High Sierra 10.13.6 | Requires NVIDIA Web Drivers; a Pascal GTX 1060 variant is called out as an exception, so the exact variant must be checked. |
These ceilings and requirements come from the Dortania NVIDIA GPU Buyers Guide. They are not estimates of how long a card might continue to work. They describe the documented macOS boundary for the listed families.

For example, a Kepler card that is acceptable for a Big Sur plan should not be carried forward to a Monterey plan. A Maxwell or Pascal card should not be treated as a modern macOS option merely because it can run newer software in another operating system; the documented macOS ceiling is High Sierra 10.13.6 and the path depends on NVIDIA Web Drivers.
Can you use an RTX 3060, 3070, or 3080 with macOS?
No supported path is listed for those cards. RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 are Ampere cards in the RTX 30xx family, which the current guide marks unsupported. The same check applies to other RTX 30xx models; the specific number does not create an exception within the family.
The conclusion is the same for RTX 20xx Turing cards and RTX 40xx Lovelace cards. A higher-end model, a factory-overclocked board, or a card that performs well in Windows remains in the same unsupported macOS generation.
What to do if your existing Hackintosh has an RTX card
If the system currently displays an image
Do not use a visible desktop as proof that the RTX card is supported. Compare the exact model and architecture with the current guide. The documented result for RTX 20xx, 30xx, and 40xx remains unsupported, regardless of whether another part of the setup produces a display.
If you are planning a new installation
Choose the GPU and macOS release together. If the plan starts with an RTX card and a recent macOS release, change the GPU plan rather than searching for a macOS version that might make that RTX generation compatible; the current guide lists no supported release for it.
If the inventory utility reports only a broad label
Power down and inspect the card’s physical markings, then reconcile them with the hardware inventory information. A broad “GTX 600 series” result cannot distinguish the GTX 660 core variants that the guide treats differently, and a similarly broad label can hide the GTX 745/750/750 Ti architecture distinction.

If you are dual-booting
Evaluate the macOS side independently. Features or drivers available when the machine is running Windows do not change the macOS compatibility entry. Keep the macOS release, exact GPU core, and the relevant guide section in your build notes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a replacement GPU family
If the objective is accelerated graphics in macOS, Dortania’s GPUs | Anti-Hackintosh Buyers Guide points readers toward AMD families rather than current NVIDIA RTX hardware. The families named there are:
| AMD family named in the guide | How to use that information |
|---|---|
| Polaris 10/20 | Includes the RX 4xx and RX 5xx families; verify the exact card and target macOS release. |
| Vega | Check the specific model against the target release before purchase. |
| Navi 10 | Confirm the exact board and macOS version in the current compatibility documentation. |
This is family-level guidance, not a blanket approval for every board carrying one of those names. Board variants, exact models, and the macOS release still need to be checked. A card described as part of the RX 5xx family should therefore be treated as a candidate for verification, not as an automatic guarantee.
A practical decision checklist
- Copy the complete model name from the card or a hardware inventory utility.
- Identify the architecture and GPU core when that information is available.
- Choose the exact macOS release for the Hackintosh installation.
- Open the current NVIDIA GPU Buyers Guide and locate the matching generation.
- Reject RTX 20xx, RTX 30xx, and RTX 40xx for accelerated macOS graphics because the guide lists all three families as unsupported.
- For a GTX card, read the legacy entry in full, including the operating-system ceiling, core distinctions, and Web Driver requirement.
- For a replacement, compare an exact AMD model from the Polaris 10/20, Vega, or Navi 10 families with the target macOS release using the Anti-Hackintosh guide.
- Save the model, core, macOS version, and guide result in your build notes so a later hardware swap does not invalidate the check.
Common compatibility mistakes
“RTX” is treated as a support label
RTX is a product-family name, not a macOS compatibility guarantee. The 20xx, 30xx, and 40xx generations span Turing, Ampere, and Lovelace, yet the current guide lists each as unsupported.
A series number is used without the core
This mistake mainly affects older GTX hardware. The guide’s GTX 660, GTX 745, GTX 750, GTX 750 Ti, and Pascal GTX 1060 notes show why the core and architecture must be recorded.
The macOS ceiling is ignored
A legacy card can be suitable for one installation plan and unsuitable for another. Kepler’s Big Sur ceiling and the High Sierra 10.13.6 ceiling for Maxwell and Pascal must be compared with the release you actually intend to run.
Web Drivers are treated as optional details
For Maxwell and Pascal, the guide states that NVIDIA Web Drivers are required. That dependency belongs in the initial compatibility decision, not as a troubleshooting step after buying the card.
A replacement family is treated as a specific-card endorsement
The AMD recommendations identify Polaris 10/20, Vega, and Navi 10 families. They do not remove the need to verify the exact model, board variant, and target macOS release.
Final answer
To check an NVIDIA card, identify its exact model and core, write down the macOS release, and compare both with the current Dortania GPU guide. For every RTX 20xx, 30xx, and 40xx card, that comparison ends with the same result: the guide lists no supported macOS release. If you need accelerated Hackintosh graphics, start a replacement search among the AMD families named in the Anti-Hackintosh guide and verify the exact card before committing to the build.
