How to Check Whether Your Neighborhood Is Sinking

Start with measured movement, not a guess from groundwater levels or a single crack. Check your U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and state or local agency sources for repeat satellite-radar (InSAR) maps and repeated geodetic or GPS surveys. These records can show whether the ground surface has changed over time. Groundwater data can explain conditions that may cause compaction, but a falling water level does not prove that land has moved.

Public maps are regional screening tools. They do not establish the condition of an individual house or parcel. If the evidence points to movement near your property, or you are seeing urgent physical changes, ask the relevant local authority what monitoring is available and arrange an assessment by a qualified geotechnical professional or land surveyor.

First, distinguish regional subsidence from a sudden collapse

People use “sinking” for two different processes. Land subsidence is the gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth’s surface when subsurface materials are removed, compacted or displaced. Localized collapse, including a sinkhole, affects a limited area and can develop differently from broad regional settlement. The detection method, urgency and likely causes depend on which process you are investigating.

Broad, gradual land subsidence

Regional subsidence can extend across a basin, an agricultural district or a metropolitan area. USGS identifies aquifer-system compaction after groundwater withdrawal, drainage of organic soils, underground mining, natural compaction and collapse, and thawing permafrost among possible causes. Where groundwater depletion is involved, movement is typically gradual and widespread, so people may not notice it by looking at the ground.

Localized collapse

A sinkhole is one possible localized collapse process; it is not interchangeable with regional subsidence. A broad InSAR pattern may show a slowly deforming area, while a sudden problem at one site may require an on-site investigation. Public regional data cannot by itself diagnose what is happening beneath one structure.

A practical check you can complete with public data

  1. Define the question and area. Write down the neighborhood, county or water basin you mean, and whether you want a recent rate, a long historical record or evidence of a sudden event. A map covering a whole basin may not resolve a street or parcel.
  2. Search official sources. Search the USGS and your state geological survey, water-resources department or local subsidence district for the place name plus “land subsidence,” “InSAR,” “ground deformation” or “subsidence map.” Some agencies publish interactive maps; others publish technical reports, data downloads or no current public map.
  3. Record the product’s scope. Before interpreting a color or number, note the mapped area, observation dates, units, reference frame and whether the display shows cumulative displacement or a rate. Two maps can use similar colors while covering different periods or measuring different quantities.
  4. Look for repeat observations. Prefer a time series of InSAR scenes or repeated geodetic/GPS surveys. A single image, isolated point or one elevation reading cannot establish a trend.
  5. Use groundwater records as context. Check monitored water levels or confined-aquifer pressure in the National Groundwater Conditions application or a state system. A decline can be relevant to compaction, but groundwater monitoring alone does not measure land motion.
  6. Compare independent evidence cautiously. If a radar map and benchmark survey cover the same area and period, see whether their patterns are consistent. Do not combine values mechanically: each product has its own reference frame, dates and uncertainty.
  7. Escalate a parcel-specific concern. Contact the local authority for available monitoring or assessment guidance and consult a qualified geotechnical engineer or land surveyor. Ask what reference points, survey interval and method are appropriate for your site.

Where to look for neighborhood-level information

USGS resources

USGS is the starting point for national explanations, historical context and region-specific products. It provides interactive California subsidence resources and has documented detailed studies such as those in the Houston–Galveston and Mojave regions. Those examples demonstrate what is available in particular places; they do not imply that every U.S. neighborhood has an equivalent public map or an address-level service.

State and local agencies

State geological surveys and water-resources departments often maintain the most relevant local records. In some areas, a local subsidence district or groundwater-management agency publishes monitoring results. Search the agency’s site using the place name and the terms above, then check the publication date and geographic coverage. If no current map is posted, a technical report, benchmark-survey record or public contact may still identify the appropriate data.

Why a universal address lookup does not exist

Satellite tracks, ground instruments, agency boundaries and observation periods differ. Vegetation, humidity and surface conditions can also affect radar results. Consequently, there is no evidence of one universal map that reliably answers the question for every U.S. address. Treat a regional product as a screening layer, not a property certification.

How the main measurement methods differ

The useful comparison is not a simple ranking. Ask what physical quantity is measured, how much area is covered, whether repeat history exists, what limits apply and whether the result speaks to a specific site.

Method What it measures and why it helps Coverage and repeat history Important limits
InSAR Repeat-pass satellite radar compares observations from different dates to map land-surface uplift or subsidence. Broad regional coverage; useful for patterns and rates when a time series is available. Dense vegetation and high humidity can scatter radar signals and reduce accuracy. A regional product is not automatically a parcel-level diagnosis.
Geodetic or GPS benchmark survey Repeated measurements at established benchmark locations track changes in surface elevation. Point-based coverage; repeat surveys provide a direct elevation trend at the benchmarks. Reliable, stable reference points and repeat measurements are required. One reading does not establish movement.
Borehole extensometer Measures aquifer-system expansion or compaction at an instrumented location and can provide precise local observations. Very local coverage with a potentially detailed time series. It describes one monitored location, and installation can be a substantial undertaking.
Groundwater monitoring well Measures water level or confined-aquifer pressure, helping explain conditions associated with compaction. Point-based hydrologic history where a monitored well exists. It measures water conditions, not land motion. A falling level alone cannot demonstrate subsidence.

Why InSAR is often the first screening tool

USGS describes interferometric synthetic aperture radar as the tool of choice for detecting and mapping land-surface deformation. The method compares radar observations acquired on different dates, allowing a map to show broad areas of relative movement. It is especially useful when you need to see whether a neighborhood is part of a larger pattern rather than trying to infer movement from one building.

When ground surveys add value

Repeated geodetic or GPS surveys provide elevation changes at known benchmarks. They can validate or refine a regional radar pattern, but only when the benchmarks and reference network remain stable and the surveys are repeated. An apparent difference can reflect a changed reference point or method rather than actual neighborhood movement, so read the agency’s survey notes.

What an extensometer can and cannot tell you

An extensometer records compaction or expansion in the subsurface at its borehole. That precision is valuable for understanding an aquifer system, but the instrument does not automatically represent conditions several blocks away. Its result must be interpreted with the site’s geology, groundwater history and other measurements.

How to read an InSAR or subsidence map without overclaiming

Check the date range

Find the first and last observation dates. A value may be cumulative displacement across that interval or an annualized rate derived from it. A recent rate and a multi-decade total answer different questions. Do not describe a multi-year total as what the ground moved this year.

Check units and sign conventions

Read the legend for millimetres, centimetres or another unit, and determine whether a positive value means uplift or subsidence in that product. Colors are not standardized between agencies. A red zone on one map may represent a different direction or scale on another.

Check the reference frame

InSAR and survey products report movement relative to a reference system. Identify the stated reference frame and any fixed or assumed-stable area. Relative motion can be real and useful, but it is not the same as an absolute elevation tied to sea level unless the product says so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check spatial resolution and coverage

A pixel or measurement point may cover an area larger than your lot. Look at the map scale, data spacing and any masked or low-confidence regions. Do not treat a color change at the edge of a pixel as proof that one house is moving.

Account for radar conditions

Dense vegetation and high humidity can scatter radar signals and reduce accuracy. If an agency flags gaps, noise or limited coherence, do not fill those gaps with assumptions. Look for a longer time series, a ground survey or professional advice.

Use groundwater data as a clue, not a verdict

Groundwater withdrawal can reduce pore pressure and contribute to aquifer-system compaction, making water-level records useful context. The National Groundwater Conditions application can place monitored levels in historical context. However, a well records water level or pressure; it does not record the elevation of the land surface. A falling water level can occur without a demonstrated surface change, and a subsidence map requires direct deformation measurements.

For a meaningful comparison, align the groundwater record with the deformation product’s location and dates. Note whether the well is in the same aquifer system and whether the map measures a rate or cumulative displacement. If those details do not match, report the records as separate observations rather than claiming one caused the other.

What national and historical figures do—and do not—tell you

USGS reports more than 17,000 square miles in 45 U.S. states of land subsidence in its national overview and fact sheet. This is a historical national extent, not a risk estimate for your neighborhood.

USGS also reports that more than 80 percent of known U.S. land subsidence is attributed to groundwater use. That figure describes the known national pattern; it does not establish the cause at an individual site without local evidence.

A frequently cited California example is roughly 9 metres of subsidence from 1925 to 1977 at an approximate maximum-subsidence location in the San Joaquin Valley. The dates and place are essential: the example is not a current measurement for every part of the valley or a prediction for another neighborhood.

When a public map is not enough

For a specific parcel

Ask the state geological or water agency and any local subsidence district what records cover the parcel. Then ask a qualified geotechnical engineer or land surveyor to select an appropriate method. Depending on the setting, that may involve tying a survey to stable benchmarks, reviewing nearby InSAR time series or evaluating whether an extensometer or other instrumented observation exists.

For urgent or rapidly changing conditions

If you observe an urgent physical change, contact the relevant local authority promptly and seek professional assessment. Public regional maps are not emergency thresholds, and the reviewed measurement sources do not establish a universal homeowner symptom checklist. Do not wait for a map update to resolve an immediate safety concern.

Why consumer gadgets are insufficient

A consumer bubble level, laser level, smartphone GPS or generic home-inspection kit is not substantiated as a way to determine neighborhood subsidence. Such devices may show a local reading under uncontrolled conditions, but they do not create a repeatable, referenced time series for regional ground movement.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using groundwater decline as proof. Correct it by pairing hydrologic records with InSAR or repeated elevation measurements.
  • Comparing colors from unrelated maps. Correct it by reading each legend, unit, date range and reference frame before comparing values.
  • Assuming a regional average applies to one house. Correct it by checking spatial resolution and obtaining a parcel-specific survey when needed.
  • Relying on a single observation. Correct it by finding repeat radar scenes or repeated benchmark surveys; a one-time reading cannot establish a trend.
  • Ignoring data quality notes. Correct it by reviewing warnings about vegetation, humidity, gaps, noise and unstable reference points.
  • Assuming California coverage exists everywhere. Correct it by searching the agencies responsible for your own state, basin or district; availability varies by location.
  • Treating a historical headline as a current forecast. Correct it by preserving the place, dates and measurement type attached to every quoted figure.

A decision framework for your next step

What you find What it supports Next action
Repeat InSAR shows a coherent neighborhood-scale pattern over a stated period. Evidence of relative surface deformation in the mapped area. Read the quality notes and compare with any benchmark surveys; seek professional interpretation for a parcel decision.
Repeated benchmark elevations change consistently. Evidence of elevation change at those benchmark locations. Confirm the reference network and survey dates, then ask whether nearby points are included.
Groundwater levels decline but no deformation record is available. A condition that may be associated with compaction, not proof of movement. Look for a local InSAR product, survey record or agency assessment.
No public map or time series covers the neighborhood. An evidence gap, not evidence that the ground is stable. Contact the state or local agency and arrange qualified geotechnical or surveying advice if the concern is site-specific.
A map shows a sudden, isolated anomaly. A result requiring quality and site review; it may not represent a broad trend. Check observation dates, radar conditions and nearby reference points, and contact local officials if conditions appear urgent.

The bottom line

To check whether your neighborhood is sinking, find an official repeat-measurement record—preferably an InSAR time series or repeated geodetic/GPS survey—and read its dates, units, reference frame and limitations. Use groundwater levels to understand possible causes, never as a substitute for a movement measurement. Because regional maps cannot certify an individual property, a parcel-specific or urgent concern belongs with the responsible local agency and a qualified geotechnical professional or land surveyor.
