To check a Motorola phone’s Android-update eligibility, first identify its exact model and variant. Then use Motorola Support’s software-update page for your country, select that device, and read the separate Android-upgrade and security-update schedules. Finally, check the phone itself at Settings > System updates > Check for system update to see whether an approved release is available to install now. A phone can be scheduled for a future Android version without that version having reached your handset yet.
What “eligible for an Android update” actually means
Eligibility has two different parts. An Android OS upgrade moves the phone to a newer Android generation, such as Android 15 to Android 16. A security update keeps the current Android generation patched against security problems; it is not the same as receiving a new version of Android.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Motorola publishes these commitments separately. A device may have another Android version planned while its security-patch schedule ends on a different date. Conversely, a phone may continue receiving security patches after its last planned Android upgrade. Check both entries before deciding whether support is still active.

| Schedule entry | What it answers | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Android upgrade or next OS | Whether Motorola currently plans to deliver a newer Android version for that model in the selected market | That the update is downloadable today or that every regional and carrier variant will receive it simultaneously |
| Security updates | How long Motorola currently plans to provide security patches for the device | That the phone will receive a new Android generation during that period |
| Phone’s built-in update check | Whether an update is available to your handset at this moment | That no future update is planned when nothing is offered yet |
Think of the support page as a plan and the handset check as a live availability test. You need both pieces to answer “Will my Motorola get the next Android update?” A listed future upgrade establishes planned eligibility, while the notification on your phone establishes whether Motorola has released it to your particular device.

Step 1: Find the exact Motorola model
Do not begin with a broad family name such as “Moto G” or “Edge.” Motorola lists individual devices, and closely related phones can have different Android and security-support schedules.
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone. On some software versions, you may need to scroll before this option appears.
- Record the full model name shown there. Also note any model number, storage or memory variant, and carrier branding displayed on the same screen.
The exact spelling matters when you search Motorola Support. A retail model, a carrier edition, and a regional variant can be treated differently even when their marketing names look almost identical. If the About phone screen shows a model number, keep it available when contacting support.
Take a screenshot or write down the details before leaving this screen. “moto g” followed by a number, a “Power,” “Play,” or “5G” suffix, and a generation year can all identify different support entries. If the phone was purchased through a carrier, record that carrier too; carrier approval and distribution can affect timing.
Step 2: Use Motorola’s support page for your country
Open Motorola Support’s software-update or upgrade-schedule page for the country where the phone is being used. Motorola says that the country-specific page is the place to check whether an operating-system upgrade is expected and whether security support remains. Its support agents also use that local information when answering update questions.
- Choose the correct country or region on Motorola’s support site before selecting a phone.
- Search for the exact model name from About phone, not only the product family.
- Open the device entry and look for both the Android-upgrade information and the security-update information.
- Check whether the listing refers to your sales channel or carrier. If it does not, treat the result as a plan for the listed market rather than a guarantee for every variant.
Country selection is important because release schedules, certification, carrier approval, and device availability differ by market. A result from another country can be useful for context, but it cannot by itself establish eligibility for your handset.
If the site offers a country selector, change it even when the language is the same. A phone sold in one market can have a different schedule from a similarly named phone sold across a border. Keep the selected country, model name, and any displayed channel information together when you save the result.
Step 3: Read the Android and security schedules separately
Interpreting the Android-upgrade entry
An entry such as “Next OS: Android 16” means Motorola currently lists Android 16 as the next planned operating-system upgrade for that device in that listing’s market. It does not necessarily mean the update has started rolling out to your phone. If no release date is shown, Motorola’s own wording is: “If the website doesn’t have a update release date for your phone, then we don’t know the release date yet.” An absent date is therefore an unknown date, not a date you should infer.

A planned version is not the same as a download link or an installation notice. The schedule can answer what Motorola intends to support, but only the handset’s update check can show whether the software package has reached your device. Do not substitute another model’s date for your own listing.

Interpreting the security-support entry
Look for the date or period through which security updates are scheduled. This is the support horizon for patches to the current Android software. It is separate from the date of a major Android upgrade and should be recorded independently when you assess an older phone.
For example, a device could show a future Android version while also showing that security updates are planned only through a particular month. That combination does not mean the entries conflict: the Android upgrade is a major-version plan, while the security date describes the patch-support period. Likewise, a security date extending beyond the last listed Android version does not promise another OS generation.
Do not convert either schedule into a universal Motorola rule. The official material does not establish one fixed support duration that applies to every model, edition, or market.

The support page tells you what Motorola plans; the handset tells you what is installed now.
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Android version.
- Write down the Android version and, if displayed, the Android security-update date and build number.
This screen is a status report, not an eligibility forecast. A phone showing an older Android version may still be waiting for a scheduled upgrade, while a phone showing the latest version listed for its model may have reached the end of its OS-upgrade path.
Compare the version shown here with the “Next OS” entry on Motorola’s local page. If the phone already has the listed version, the next question is whether another version is listed. If it is still on an earlier version, the difference may reflect a staged rollout, a carrier channel, or an update that has not yet been released in that market.
Step 5: Check whether an update is available now
- Connect the phone to a reliable Wi-Fi network and make sure its battery has enough charge for the installation.
- Open Settings.
- Tap System updates.
- Tap Check for system update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update appears.
On some Motorola software versions, the path includes an additional level: Settings > System > Advanced > System updates. Menu labels can vary by device and Android version, so use the closest equivalent shown on your phone.

The built-in check answers a narrower question than the support schedule: it reports whether Motorola has made a release available to your handset at that time. A “no update available” result does not cancel a future plan on the support page.

Run the check again after confirming that the local support page matches your exact model. If the schedule lists a future upgrade but the phone reports nothing, record the date and result rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. The key comparison is between the current plan for your model and the current availability for your handset.
Four outcomes and what each one means
| What you see | Most accurate conclusion | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Model listed, future Android version listed, no update on phone | The upgrade is planned but is not available to this handset yet. | Confirm region and channel, then check periodically. |
| Model listed, no release date shown | Motorola has not published a date it currently knows. | Do not estimate from another model; monitor the same local listing. |
| Security date listed, no newer Android version listed | Security support may continue without another major OS upgrade. | Record the security horizon separately from OS eligibility. |
| Exact model missing from the correct local page | Motorola indicates that unlisted devices will no longer receive OS or security updates on that page. | Verify the variant and contact Motorola Support if the channel or region is uncertain. |
How to judge rollout dates and delays
Motorola describes published schedules as current plans, not unconditional promises. The company reserves the right to change release timing. A date can move because of product testing, carrier or partner certification, regional distribution, or other software-release conditions.
Rollouts can also be staged. Two phones in the same country may not receive the notification on the same day, and a carrier-distributed variant can follow a different schedule from an unlocked model. Therefore, a delay by itself does not demonstrate that the phone is ineligible.
- Scheduled, but not offered: The model appears on the local page with a planned upgrade, yet Check for system update finds nothing. Continue checking periodically; the plan and the actual rollout are different states.
- Offered on another phone first: This can reflect staged distribution, carrier approval, or a regional difference rather than a contradiction.
- No release date shown: Treat the date as not yet known, using Motorola’s wording, rather than estimating one from another model.
- Date changes on the page: Use the current local listing instead of an old screenshot or forum post. Motorola’s schedule is subject to change.
A delay is especially difficult to interpret when the model name is shared across several channels. Before concluding that Motorola skipped your phone, compare the model number, country, carrier, and installed Android version with the listing.
What to do when your model is missing
First confirm that you opened the support page for the phone’s actual country and selected the exact model. Check the model number and carrier channel again; a family-level search can return an incomplete or different device entry.
Motorola’s support information says availability varies by region and that devices not listed will no longer receive OS or security updates. A missing model is therefore a strong indication that support has ended on that particular local page. If you suspect that the phone is a regional or carrier variant, contact Motorola Support before making a device-specific conclusion and provide the model number, country, and carrier.
Do not substitute an entry for a similarly named phone from another country. The absence of a listing in one market cannot be repaired by assuming that another market’s schedule applies.
When contacting support, state the exact text from About phone, the model number, the country where the phone is used, and whether it was purchased through a carrier. Ask support to confirm both OS-upgrade eligibility and the security-update end date; asking only about “software updates” can leave the distinction unclear.

Worked example: reading a Motorola device listing
Motorola’s India support listing for the moto g96 5G provides a useful example of how to read the fields. The listing shows the phone launching on Android 15, identifies Android 16 as the next operating system, and schedules security updates to stop in June 2028. Those facts describe that India listing for that device; they are not a universal policy for every Motorola phone.
| Displayed item | Meaning in this example |
|---|---|
| Launch Android 15 | The Android generation supplied when the listed device launched |
| Next OS: Android 16 | Motorola’s listed next major Android upgrade for that India device entry |
| Security updates stop in June 2028 | The scheduled end of security support shown for that listing |
The listing itself cautions that launch dates and support cycles can vary by channel and region. An owner of the same marketing model elsewhere should repeat the lookup on the local Motorola page. The example demonstrates the comparison to make: read the next-OS field, read the security end date, then check the phone’s installed version and live update status.
Common cases and the right conclusion
The support page lists a future Android version, but the phone is still on the old version
That combination normally means the upgrade is planned but has not reached your handset. Verify the country, model, and channel, then use the phone’s system-update check. Do not treat the absence of an immediate download as proof that the plan was withdrawn.

Security maintenance and OS upgrades are independent. A current security patch does not imply that another Android generation is due, and a planned OS upgrade does not tell you how long security patches will continue. Read the two schedule entries separately.
The phone is listed, but no release date appears
Motorola says it does not know the release date yet when its website has no date. Keep the model on your watch list and avoid treating estimates from another model or country as a commitment.
The update appears on the phone and you want to return to the previous Android version
Motorola Support states: “You can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update.” Review the release notes and back up important data before accepting a major update, because installing it should be treated as a one-way software change.
A similarly named model appears, but your exact model does not
Do not assume that the nearby entry applies. Compare the complete name and model number in About phone with the support listing. If the difference could be a regional or carrier variant, ask Motorola Support to verify it rather than relying on a schedule for a different device.

- Country or region selected on Motorola Support matches where the phone is used.
- Exact model name and, where available, model number copied from Settings > About phone.
- Carrier or distribution channel noted.
- Android-upgrade entry checked separately from the security-update entry.
- Current Android version recorded under About phone > Android version.
- System updates > Check for system update run on the handset.
- Any date treated as Motorola’s current plan, with regional, carrier, testing, and rollout differences allowed for.
- Missing listings verified against the correct local page before contacting support about a variant.
This process gives you the strongest available answer: the local Motorola listing establishes the current plan, while the phone’s settings establish what is installed and what can be downloaded now.
Best Value
What this check does—and does not—cost
There is no paid tool or accessory required. The eligibility check uses Motorola’s support pages and the settings already on the phone. A replacement device becomes a separate decision only after you have confirmed that the current model has reached the end of its OS or security support; buying anything is not part of determining eligibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if my Motorola phone will get the next Android update?
Find the exact model under Settings > About phone, open Motorola Support’s software-update page for the country where the phone is used, and read the model’s Android-upgrade entry. Then compare it with the installed version under About phone > Android version. A listed next OS shows Motorola’s current plan; it does not guarantee that the update is downloadable today.
Is my Motorola phone eligible if Motorola lists it but gives no release date?
It is listed for the planned upgrade, but the timing is not known. Motorola says that when its website has no release date, it does not know the release date yet. Do not infer a date from another model or country, and check the local listing again later.
How do I check for software updates on my Motorola?
Open Settings > System updates > Check for system update. Some devices place System updates under Settings > System > Advanced. Follow the on-screen prompts if an update appears. Menu wording can vary by Android version.
Will my Motorola still get security updates after its last Android upgrade?
Possibly. Motorola treats security updates as a separate support commitment from major Android upgrades. Read the security-update date on the country-specific device listing instead of assuming that the last OS version is the security end date.
Why does another Motorola phone have the update when mine does not?
Rollouts can differ by region, carrier, partner certification, testing, distribution channel, and staged release timing. Confirm the exact model, country, and carrier before concluding that your phone is ineligible. A delay alone does not prove that support was withdrawn.
What if my Motorola model is not on the support page?
Verify the correct country page, exact model, model number, and carrier channel first. Motorola says availability varies by region and that devices not listed will no longer receive OS or security updates on that page. If the phone may be a regional or carrier variant, contact Motorola Support with those details.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does a security patch prove that a new Android version is coming?
No. A security patch fixes issues in the current Android version and is separate from an Android OS upgrade. Check the Android-upgrade schedule and security schedule independently.
Can I downgrade after installing a Motorola Android update?
Motorola Support states: “You can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update.” Treat installation as a one-way software change and review the update information before proceeding.
The Bottom Line
Use Motorola’s country-specific support page with the exact model and variant, read the Android-upgrade and security schedules separately, then run Settings > System updates > Check for system update. The support page shows Motorola’s current plan; the phone shows what is installed and available now.
