How to Check Whether Your Motherboard Supports Windows 11

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app first. It tests the assembled computer—not just the motherboard—and identifies failed Windows 11 requirements. A motherboard matters mainly because it must provide UEFI firmware, Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0 support. Processor eligibility, memory, storage, graphics, and display requirements apply to the complete PC.

A motherboard model alone cannot prove that a computer is eligible. Firmware version, processor model, current settings, and other components can change the result. After PC Health Check reports a problem, verify the exact motherboard or PC model with its manufacturer before changing BIOS settings or buying hardware.

Does my motherboard support Windows 11?

It supports Windows 11 only if the board and the rest of the computer satisfy Microsoft’s requirements. For the motherboard specifically, check three things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • UEFI firmware: The system must support UEFI and Secure Boot capability. A legacy BIOS configuration cannot provide Secure Boot.
  • TPM 2.0: The computer must have a TPM 2.0 security processor, either as firmware-based TPM or as a supported hardware implementation.
  • Manufacturer support: The precise board model and BIOS revision determine whether the required options exist and how they are enabled.

Even a board that has all three capabilities can be part of an ineligible PC. Windows 11 also evaluates the processor, memory, storage, graphics, and display. Conversely, a failed PC Health Check result does not automatically mean the motherboard must be replaced; the failure may be an unsupported CPU, a disabled setting, or another component.

What Windows 11 requires from the complete PC

Microsoft’s published requirements apply to the whole computer. Use this table to separate board-related checks from requirements that must be investigated elsewhere.

Requirement What Microsoft requires Where to investigate
Processor 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, and a model on Microsoft’s supported processor list CPU model and Microsoft’s current list
Memory At least 4 GB of RAM Installed system memory
Storage A storage device of at least 64 GB System drive capacity and available space
Firmware and boot UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability Motherboard or PC firmware mode and settings
Security processor TPM version 2.0 TPM status in Windows and firmware
Graphics DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver Graphics adapter and driver
Display More than 9 inches diagonally and 720p HD resolution Connected monitor or built-in screen

Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use also require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Those setup conditions are separate from motherboard compatibility.

The numeric thresholds are minimums, not a performance recommendation. Meeting 4 GB of RAM or 64 GB of storage may satisfy the installer while leaving little room for applications, updates, or personal files. The eligibility question and the question of whether the computer will feel comfortable to use are different.

How do I check if my motherboard is compatible with Windows 11?

1. Run PC Health Check on the Windows 10 computer

  1. Install and open Microsoft’s PC Health Check app on the PC you want to upgrade.
  2. Open the Windows 11 section and select Check now.
  3. Read the eligibility result. The app reports whether the device passes and identifies requirements that fail.
  4. Select See all results to view the individual checks rather than relying only on the overall message.

Microsoft describes PC Health Check as a comprehensive eligibility check for the device. It is the fastest way to determine whether a motherboard-related setting is actually preventing an upgrade, because it evaluates the current machine rather than an isolated board specification.

Run it on the computer that will be upgraded, not on a different system with the same motherboard model. A desktop’s installed CPU, boot mode, firmware revision, and graphics card can differ from another owner’s configuration. If the PC is a laptop or prebuilt, the complete manufacturer model is more useful than a guessed motherboard name.

2. Match each failure to the responsible component

Look for separate entries for the processor, TPM, Secure Boot or firmware, memory, and storage. A failure tells you what to diagnose; it does not by itself identify a replacement part. For example, a TPM failure can mean that TPM is disabled, that the firmware is too old to expose it, or that the platform lacks a compatible implementation.

Capture the result before making changes. A screenshot or written list of failed items makes it easier to compare results after a BIOS update or setting change. Change one relevant item at a time, reboot, and run the check again; otherwise you may not know which action solved the problem or introduced a new boot issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Confirm the exact board or PC model

Record the motherboard model, system manufacturer, and BIOS or UEFI revision shown by Windows or by the firmware setup screen. If the computer is a prebuilt desktop or laptop, use the complete PC model rather than trying to identify an internal board by appearance.

Use that exact identifier in the manufacturer’s support documentation before changing firmware settings. Microsoft directs users to the equipment maker for compatibility questions, and the maker’s instructions are the authority for BIOS menus, firmware updates, and supported TPM implementations.

Model names can be deceptively similar. A board may have separate revisions with different firmware files, and a prebuilt system can use a customized BIOS even when its processor or chipset resembles a retail motherboard. Never flash a file intended for a nearby model or revision.

How do I check TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot?

Check TPM status in Windows

Press Windows+R, enter tpm.msc, and open the TPM management console. A usable TPM should report that it is ready for use and show Specification Version as 2.0. If Windows says a compatible TPM cannot be found, do not assume the board lacks one; it may be disabled in firmware.

On some systems, Windows exposes a firmware TPM rather than a removable module. The wording and location of the option vary by manufacturer, so use the documentation for the exact model. Names can include a firmware security device or a platform-security setting; do not enable an option solely because its label sounds similar without confirming the maker’s instructions.

TPM is a security processor used for cryptographic operations and platform-integrity measurements. Microsoft notes that TPM 2.0 requires UEFI firmware. A computer running a legacy BIOS mode with a TPM 2.0 component will not work as expected for Windows 11 until the boot configuration is addressed.

Check whether Windows is booted in UEFI mode

Press Windows+R, enter msinfo32, and inspect BIOS Mode in System Information. It should show UEFI. A Legacy value indicates that the current installation is using legacy boot mode, which prevents Secure Boot from functioning as required.

Check Secure Boot state

In the same System Information window, read Secure Boot State. If it is On, the setting is active. If it is Off, the firmware may support it but have it disabled. If the field is unavailable or the system is in legacy mode, consult the board or PC maker before attempting a conversion or firmware change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secure Boot can only be enabled with UEFI. Do not treat a TPM result as a substitute for this check: TPM and Secure Boot are separate requirements. A machine can have TPM 2.0 enabled and still fail because it is booting in legacy mode or because its firmware has no Secure Boot capability.

Can I enable TPM 2.0 in BIOS?

Often, but not universally. Microsoft says a BIOS update may enable TPM 2.0 on some devices; that is not guaranteed for every motherboard. Depending on the platform, the option may be presented as a firmware security device rather than as a socketed TPM module.

  1. Back up important files and record your current firmware settings.
  2. Find the exact board or PC model and read the manufacturer’s TPM and Windows 11 instructions.
  3. Install a BIOS or UEFI update only when the manufacturer lists it for that exact model and revision.
  4. Enter firmware setup using the maker’s documented key or procedure.
  5. Enable the TPM 2.0-compatible option, save changes, and reboot.
  6. Run tpm.msc again, confirm the specification version, and rerun PC Health Check.

Firmware updates carry interruption and configuration risks. Use reliable power, do not turn off the computer while an update is running, and follow any recovery instructions supplied by the maker. If drive encryption or other security software is active, make sure you have the required recovery information before altering firmware security settings.

Do not buy a generic TPM module based only on a connector or a picture. Headers, firmware support, pinouts, and approved modules differ between boards, and a module cannot correct an unrelated processor, boot-mode, graphics, or display failure.

What UEFI and Secure Boot mean for a motherboard

UEFI is the modern firmware environment that replaces legacy BIOS booting. Windows 11 requires UEFI with Secure Boot capability; the requirement is about capability as well as the current configuration.

A system can therefore fail in two different ways:

  • Capability problem: The motherboard or PC firmware does not provide the required UEFI/Secure Boot support.
  • Configuration problem: The firmware supports it, but the installation is booting in legacy mode or Secure Boot is disabled.

The second case may be recoverable, but changing boot mode on an existing Windows installation can affect startup. Follow the manufacturer’s migration instructions and ensure you have a current backup before making changes. If the documentation does not clearly describe the procedure, ask the PC maker or a qualified technician rather than guessing at firmware settings.

Do not assume that a menu item proves the current installation is ready. Confirm both the firmware’s capability and Windows’ reported state. Secure Boot may also be unavailable until the system is configured to use UEFI-compatible boot files, so a simple toggle is not always the complete fix.

Why the processor check is separate from the motherboard check

A modern-looking board does not make every processor compatible with Windows 11. Microsoft requires an approved processor model in addition to the clock-speed and core-count minimums. A CPU can exceed the basic speed and core thresholds and still fail because its model is not on the supported list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the complete processor model, not merely the family name or rated frequency. Microsoft’s processor lists cover supported generations through the latest processors available when each list was published, and Microsoft warns that the lists may not reflect the newest offerings between updates. For a borderline or newly released CPU, consult the PC or motherboard manufacturer as well as Microsoft’s current list.

Processor support is also tied to the platform. A replacement CPU may require a particular socket, chipset support, or BIOS revision. Therefore, do not order a processor solely because it appears on Microsoft’s list; verify that the exact board firmware supports it and that the system maker approves the combination.

What PC Health Check does not verify

PC Health Check is a strong first test, but Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications page says the app does not check the graphics card or display requirements. A green result therefore does not prove that every display-related condition is satisfied.

Check these items separately:

  • Identify the installed graphics adapter and confirm support for DirectX 12 or later.
  • Verify that its driver meets the WDDM 2.0 requirement.
  • Confirm that the connected screen is larger than 9 inches diagonally and has at least 720p resolution.

For a laptop, use the built-in panel’s specifications. For a desktop, check the monitor currently intended for use with Windows 11. If a computer has multiple graphics adapters or screens, evaluate the configuration you will actually use. A display connected through a different adapter can have different driver requirements from the one used during testing.

Troubleshoot the exact failed requirement before buying parts

PC Health Check result Next investigation What not to assume
TPM is missing or not detected Check firmware documentation, TPM status, and BIOS updates for the exact model. That the motherboard definitely needs a plug-in module.
TPM version is below 2.0 Confirm whether a supported firmware update or compatible TPM implementation exists. That any TPM module will work.
Secure Boot or firmware fails Check BIOS Mode, UEFI capability, Secure Boot support, and the maker’s conversion instructions. That enabling one switch will repair a legacy-only board.
Processor fails Compare the exact CPU model with Microsoft’s current supported list and the maker’s platform documentation. That a higher clock speed or more cores make an unsupported model eligible.
Memory or storage fails Check installed RAM and the capacity of the Windows system drive. That a motherboard upgrade is the appropriate fix.
Graphics or display is unsuitable Check the adapter, driver, monitor size, and resolution independently. That a passing PC Health Check result covered these items.

Only after identifying the failed requirement should you consider a CPU, TPM, motherboard, or complete-PC purchase. A replacement board may solve a firmware limitation while leaving an unsupported processor in place; a CPU upgrade may require a different socket or BIOS revision; and neither fixes an inadequate display.

There is no universal “Windows 11 motherboard” category or one-size-fits-all module. Compatibility depends on the exact model, firmware revision, installed processor, and current configuration. Manufacturer documentation is more reliable than a retailer’s generic socket or chipset description.

What to do after fixing a requirement

After enabling a supported feature or installing an approved firmware update, reboot Windows and run PC Health Check again. Confirm that the previously failed item now passes, then review the remaining results and separately verify graphics and display requirements.

If the device is eligible, wait for Windows Update to indicate that Windows 11 is ready. Eligibility does not necessarily make the upgrade appear immediately. On a work or school computer managed by an organization, follow the IT administrator’s deployment process instead of changing firmware or starting an upgrade independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows Update still does not offer the upgrade, recheck the detailed results rather than repeatedly changing BIOS options. Microsoft’s requirements and supported processor lists can be updated, and the current list should be consulted when a device is near the boundary of eligibility.

A practical motherboard-compatibility checklist

  • Run PC Health Check and open See all results.
  • Write down the exact motherboard or PC model and BIOS/UEFI revision.
  • Confirm TPM 2.0 status in tpm.msc.
  • Confirm UEFI boot mode and Secure Boot state in System Information.
  • Check the exact processor model against Microsoft’s supported list.
  • Verify memory and system-drive capacity.
  • Check graphics, driver, monitor size, and resolution separately because PC Health Check omits them.
  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions before updating firmware or purchasing a TPM module.
  • Back up important data before changing firmware or boot configuration.
  • Rerun the checks after every change and fix the specific failure that remains.

This process answers the useful question—whether this particular computer can run Windows 11—rather than the narrower and potentially misleading question of whether a motherboard model appears modern enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a TPM 2.0 chip prove that my motherboard supports Windows 11?

No. TPM 2.0 is only one requirement. The computer also needs UEFI with Secure Boot capability, a supported processor, sufficient memory and storage, and compliant graphics and display hardware. Use PC Health Check and inspect every result.

What if tpm.msc says no compatible TPM is found?

The TPM may be disabled in firmware, or the BIOS may need an update. Check the exact motherboard or PC model’s documentation. Do not assume that a plug-in module is required or that a generic module will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Windows 11 with Legacy BIOS if TPM 2.0 is installed?

Microsoft requires UEFI with Secure Boot capability. A TPM 2.0 device does not replace that requirement, and Microsoft notes that TPM 2.0 with legacy BIOS will not work as expected. Check the maker’s instructions before changing boot mode.

Why does PC Health Check pass while my graphics card is still a concern?

Microsoft says the app does not check graphics-card or display requirements. Verify DirectX 12 or later, a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a display larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution separately.

Is a faster CPU automatically compatible with Windows 11?

No. In addition to 1 GHz and two or more cores, Microsoft requires a model on its supported processor list. Confirm the exact CPU model and check both Microsoft’s current list and the motherboard maker’s platform documentation.

Should I replace my motherboard when one requirement fails?

Not automatically. First identify the exact failed requirement. A BIOS update or enabled firmware TPM may solve a setting issue; a motherboard replacement will not fix an unsupported display or necessarily solve an unsupported CPU. Verify the complete platform before buying parts.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Check the complete computer with Microsoft PC Health Check, then investigate the exact failed item. For the motherboard, confirm UEFI/Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0 support, and the correct firmware for the precise model. Verify the CPU, RAM, storage, graphics, and display separately, and consult the manufacturer before changing BIOS settings or purchasing hardware.
